South Korea's economic development and ascendance in the global market have earned it a reputation as a technological leader. The government has sought to cultivate a favorable international image, despite facing labor shortages resulting from economic growth in the 1980s and a decline in the working population. This resulted in the implementation of immigration policies such as the Industrial Technical Training Program (ittp) for low-skilled workers, which was subsequently replaced by the Employment Permit System (eps) in 2004. The increasing number of foreign residents in South Korea presents a challenge to the country's cultural integration and social cohesion. Despite efforts to become a multicultural society, the understanding of multiculturalism in South Korea emphasizes assimilation over integration, perpetuating narratives of exclusion among the foreign population. This paper evaluates the multiculturalism policies of the South Korean government in light of the experiences of Filipino workers in Korea. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RACE , *EMIGRATION & immigration , *MULTICULTURALISM , *ETHNICITY , *ECONOMIC development , *RETURN migration , *CULTURAL pluralism - Abstract
Noting an overreliance on North American and European-based understandings of race and ethnicity, many sociologists have called for research in new spaces. But the same conceptual and regional limitations apply to several other studies. One example of this is multiculturalism. Scholars tend to associate multiculturalism with international migration and ethnic pluralism. As such, they typically study multiculturalism in the most ethnically diverse (and often most affluent) countries – that is, in Europe and North America. But international migration does not always result in ethnic pluralism. For example, diasporic return migration often leads to the convergence of internally diverse co-ethnic populations in ethnically homogeneous nation-states. The diasporic 'returnees', who were born outside of their perceived homelands, come through targeted migration policies, face various levels of discrimination, and yet contribute significantly to the economic development and cultural diversity of the countries to which they relocate. As such, this article argues that the multiculturalization of monoethnic nationhood is substantially driven by diasporic return migration. In exploring diasporic multiculturalism, the article draws from data collected in Yerevan, Armenia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SOCIAL groups , *TWENTIETH century , *COMMUNITARIANISM , *MULTICULTURALISM , *HOMOGENEITY - Abstract
The paper examines contemporary theories that focus on the theme of social diversity in relation to the national issue. In general, the central questioning of these theories turns against assumptions of homogeneity that marked the socio-political arrangements of modernity, which tend to generate inequalities and oppressions to certain social groups. To analyze the implications of such criticism, the article makes a comparison between concepts and directions of two theoretical lineages: communitarianism and multiculturalism. Although these theories successfully assume the challenge of pointing, since the last quarter of the twentieth century, to the particularities of sociocultural groups and to inequalities generated by traditional national arrangements, they tend to incur in some problems if they do not focus on the constituent character of public debates.

MULTICULTURAL education , *BILINGUAL teachers , *BILINGUAL education , *SCHOOL dropouts , *MULTICULTURALISM , *ACADEMIC motivation - Abstract
The objective of this study is to understand the validity of the notion of multiculturalism, and its transformative possibilities for society, through the implementation of Bilingual Intercultural Education in the ColtaGuamote District during the 2022-2023 school year. The strategy followed consists of describing multiculturalism as a process of reconstruction of the epistemological bases of society, where bilingual education must be a tool. From this, the role of the Ministry as a regulatory entity of Intercultural Bilingual Education (EIB) in the Sierra region is observed and it is described if such process shows transformative capabilities in culture. The interviews and ethnographic field diaries showed that: a) Pedagogical aspects intervened in the impossibility of achieving cultural impact objectives, since the training programs, during the period 2022-2023, had little impact on bilingual intercultural education; from the fact that this component was not considered in the educational offer, much less did it could have an impact on the community notion of multiculturalism. b) Technical aspects intervened in this gap, such as the preponderance of the virtual modality, based on the pandemic experience, which distanced objectives that were required such as integration into traditional and ancestral community life. c) Attitudinal aspects were found among bilingual intercultural teachers in reference to the low bureaucratic motivation and the persistent perception of cultural failure, associated with the dropout of students and teachers. It is concluded that the training of the Ministry of Education during this period was ineffective, for technical-pedagogical, technological and attitudinal reasons. It is recommended to recover a more radical and constitutional notion of multiculturalism that prevents bureaucratic and personal variables from destroying the public effort in this regard.. Sociologists have long studied the educational incorporation of immigrants and refugees, but most scholarship focuses on questions of access, achievement, attainment, and acculturation. We extend this literature by examining the incorporation of immigrants and refugees in the cultural content of schooling, drawing on a unique dataset spanning 509 textbooks from 80 countries, representing all regions of the world from 1963 to 2011. Our descriptive and multilevel regression analyses reveal a mixed picture. On one hand, textbook discussions of immigrants and refugees have expanded over time and are especially pervasive in textbooks that invoke post-national conceptions of citizenship and in countries that host large foreign-born populations. But we also document stagnating discussions of immigrants and refugees in recent decades, a casting of these groups as part of the historical past more than contemporary civics and society, and a tendency toward their curricular omission in countries with a recent history of war. The study's primary objective is to analyse cultural integration into the professional courses 'International Business' and 'Business English'. A survey was conducted using a specially designed questionnaire, which included two groups of students of 42 people each from the International Business College, Qingdao Huanghai University, and School of Business Administration, Moscow State University named after Lomonosov. For all items of the questionnaire, a higher assessment by Chinese students of various parameters of cultural integration was found. The importance of cultural integration was equally appreciated by the students of both countries, as well as the importance of knowledge and the development of interest in national culture. Chinese students demonstrated a higher assessment of the material support of the cultural integration process and significantly higher assessments of elements of the culture of other countries integrated into the learning environment and the learning process. The present findings can be used for further research and the introduction of the created programme into the educational process to expand intercultural communication between universities in different countries.

The 2021 national strike was undoubtedly one of the most important events in Colombia's recent history. Never before had the social protest reached such intensity and breadth as was expressed on April 28, and it continued for at least four months in different cities. Many social sectors with dissimilar agendas demonstrated in the streets throughout the country and faced the repressive and excessive response of the police that left several dead, mutilated, or missing. In this context, the Indigenous movement, one of the main groups participating in the protest, took on public intervention actions in which spirituality had a central place, among them, the call for a "social and communal minga for the care of life." This act, which staged a ritual to constitute a community and popular guard, is an example of how religion is expressed outside the areas socially assigned to it, and allows us to think about the close relationship between spirituality and politics beyond the normative frameworks of liberal secularism. From this perspective, I am interested in exploring the way in which these spiritualities mobilize powers and relationships (with humans and non-humans) as part of a political proposal that problematizes established social orders, subverts dominant frameworks of intelligibility about cultural difference and religious diversity, and challenges our political imagination about what democracy should be.

- Abstract
This paper seeks to understand the extent to which the local curriculum impacts on the appreciation of cultural diversity, aiming to elucidate the relationship between the local curriculum and cultural diversity in the Mozambican school environment. Therefore, bibliographical research was carried out, highlighting Sengulane (2022), Nivagara (2018), Santos (2018), Zanin and Lemke (2017), Ibraimo and Cabral (2015), Santiago (2012), Dias (2010) and Capece (2005). A product of this research was the understanding that the teacher must be able to enhance, through the local curriculum, the cultural diversity of students, in favor of raising the quality of teaching and learning, and the need for educators to create, in fact, the practice of diversity in teaching and not contenting itself with valuing it discursively. - Abstract
The purpose of this article is to address some of the most significant aspects of multiculturalism in Chile, taking into account the limitations and possibilities of Indigenous tourism, as well as its relationship with the Mapuche people. In the first part we review the relationships or points of contact between neoliberalism and multicultural policies. In the second part, we examine the problem of the representation of difference in the framework of Indigenous policy that has been institutionalised during the post-dictatorship and in relation to policies for the promotion of Indigenous tourism. Finally, in the last section, we analyse the development of Indigenous tourism seen from a regional perspective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

37. Multiculturalism and the Fetishization of Ethnic Difference in Mauritius.

ETHNIC differences ,MULTICULTURALISM ,ACADEMIC discourse ,MATERIAL culture - Abstract
Mauritius is often celebrated as a success story in lay and academic discourse. One version of this discourse highlights Mauritius's success in managing its diversity as a multicultural society. But there are a number of reasons to question this assumption. For instance, some writers have claimed that Mauritius's policy of multiculturalism encourages the promotion of ethnic difference and marginalizes certain minorities (Couacaud 2016, Eisenlohr 2006, Vaughan 2001). In this paper, however, I propose to go further and argue that Mauritius's policy of multiculturalism not only promotes ethnic difference and marginalizes certain minorities. It has also led to what one could describe as the "fetishization of ethnic difference." I propose to demonstrate this by discussing how material religious practices act as signs of ethnic difference in everyday life, using ethnographic observations and visual documentation methods for these purposes. Examples cited in the paper include the material culture of temple architecture, religious street-processions, garden shrines, homes, workplaces, and vehicles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TRAINING manuals , *FIRST aid training , *POST-traumatic stress disorder , *CONTENT analysis , *WORD frequency , *DATA mining , *MACHINE learning - Abstract
Background: Psychological First Aid (PFA) is practiced worldwide. This practice in English is guided through a small collection of training manuals. Despite ubiquitous practice and formal training materials, little is known about what topics are covered and in what depth in these influential manuals. As such, we analyzed the topic structure of these training manuals. Objective: To model the PFA manuals' topics with the goal of identifying a set of topics with recurrent themes and evaluating the extent to which each manual demonstrated those themes. Method: This machine learning study employed an unsupervised topic modelling design using Latent Dirichlet Allocation. The variables are (1) the distribution of a word across documents and (2) the distribution of a word across topics. The level of measurement for all variables is continuous. The unit of analysis is words. Preprocessing and data analysis were carried out using the Orange Data Mining Toolbox (Demšar et al., 2013). This programme is a Python GUI. Results: Results indicated a ten-topic structure to the universe of the English PFA training manuals. These topics were: (1) Refugees, (2) Orientation Activities, (3) Community-Based Applications, (4) PTSD & Other Psychological Issues, (5) Training Materials, (6) Specific Helper Instructions, (7) PFA Scholarship, (8) MHPSS, (9) General Curriculum, and (10) Australian Specific Delivery. The depth of discourse on each topic varied widely between manuals. Conclusions: The Academics of the PFA topic shows a strong representation of the corpus and suggests current training manuals have stayed true to its evidence-supported practice. The topic of Community-Based Applications strongly represents the corpus and suggests that training models incorporate community-based applications. The scientific foundation and practical implementation of the training guides are essential elements. Limitations and implications were also discussed. Little is known about what topics are covered and in what depth in the influential PFA English manuals. We conducted a topic modelling study using Latent Dirichlet Allocation, aiming to discover a set of topics with recurring themes and analyze the degree to which each manual exhibited those topics. Results indicated a 10-topic structure to the universe of the English PFA training manuals. The training manuals' scientific basis and practical application are key components, while notable gaps presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
