Abstract

The digital twins concept brings a new perspective into the system design and maintenance practice. As any industrial process can be accurately simulated, its digital replica can be utilized to design a control system structure, evaluate its efficacy and investigate the properties of the real system and possible issues. Based on such an analysis, ideas for improvement may be formulated. This article reports the formulation of a digital twin system developed for a Thermal System (TS) maintaining proper thermal conditions for the operation of the Silicon Tracking Detectors (STDs) utilized for high-energy physics experiments. A thermal system digital twin is built for a full-scale target installation, which is right now during the construction phase. 2. Sensing-Based Self-Reconfigurable Decision-Making Mechanism for Autonomous Modular Robotic System.

Abstract

Nowadays, robotic technology finds its way quickly across industries affecting business and people lives. In addition, the rapid growth in communication technologies leads to a new generation of robotics called as Modular Robotic System (MRS). Basically, MRS is autonomous kinematic machine with variable morphology, structure, and functionality. The detectors represent the eyes of the MRS that collect data about different environments and states, while the controller forms the brain of the MRS that must analyze the collected data and take decision about the suitable reconfiguration morphology. However, the huge number of data sensed by the detectors provides two main challenges for MRS; first, it overloads the limited storage of the MRS and, second, it complicates the self-reconfiguration decision required to change its shape according to the monitored environment. In this paper, we propose a sensing-based processing mechanism for data storage and decision making in modular robotic systems. Our mechanism consists of two phases: data storage reduction and self-reconfiguration. The first phase uses aggregation process in order to eliminate redundant data collected thus, reduce the amount of data need to be stored in MRS. The second phase uses the fuzzy logic model and allows MRS to be self-reconfigurable by taking the right decision about the desired shape. The efficiency of our mechanism is demonstrated based on real data simulation while important results have been obtained in terms of data storage and self-reconfiguration decision. 4. Etudes expérimentales du transport de l'isopin et de son influence dans les collisions d'ions lourds aux énergies de Fermi

Abstract

The study of fragmentation reactions produced in heavy-ion collisions has permitted major advances in the understanding of the dynamics and thermodynamics of nuclear matter and is still one of the most promising tools to constrain its equation of state. This fundamental feature in nuclear physics is also a crucial ingredient in the understanding of various astrophysical objects or phenomena : dynamics of supernovae explosion and structure of the remanent neutron star, or interpretation of signals coming from neutron star merger. Up to now, a crucial ingredient was missing in most fragmentation experiments : the isotopic composition of reaction products, it was only accessible for the lightest fragments with existing multi-detectors such as INDRA in GANIL. In this context, the FAZIA collaboration has developed a new generation detector able to measure the charge and mass of fragments up to Z=25 over a broad angular and energy range. Results of first experiments with FAZIA in stand alone mode have been published by the collaboration on the isotopic distribution of measured fragments. Now, twelve FAZIA modules are mounted in GANIL to replace the forward part of INDRA. This INDRA-FAZIA coupling is one of the most powerful detector to constrain the nuclear equation of state asymmetry term. The identification quality and large angular coverage also allow to investigate nuclear collision dynamics, clusterization process at low density, and light nuclei structure and decay modes. The first INDRA-FAZIA experiment at GANIL was performed in 2019. The main goal is to study the isospin tranport properties of nuclear matter by measuring the evolution of the N/Z equilibration between projectile and target of different initial isospin contents as a function of the collision centrality. In this contribution, I will present the context and first results of this experiment., L’étude des réactions de fragmentation produites lors des collisions d’ions lourds a permis des avancées majeures dans la compréhension de la dynamique et de la thermodynamique de la matière nucléaire et reste l’un des outils les plus prometteurs pour contraindre son équation d’état. Cette caractérisation fondamentale de la physique nucléaire est également un ingrédient crucial pour la compréhension de divers objets ou phénomènes astrophysiques : dynamique de l’explosion des supernovae et structure des étoiles à neutrons, ou interprétation des signaux provenant de la fusion d’étoiles à neutrons. Jusqu’à présent, un ingrédient crucial manquait dans la plupart des expériences de fragmentation : la composition isotopique des produits de réaction. Elle n’était accessible que pour les fragments les plus légers avec les multi-détecteurs existants comme INDRA au GANIL. Dans ce contexte, la collaboration FAZIA a développé un détecteur de nouvelle génération capable de mesurer la charge et la masse de fragments jusqu’à Z=25 sur une large gamme angulaire et énergétique. Les résultats des premières expériences avec FAZIA en mode autonome ont été publiés par la collaboration sur la distribution isotopique des fragments mesurés. Aujourd’hui, douze modules FAZIA sont montés au GANIL pour remplacer la partie avant d’INDRA. Ce couplage INDRA-FAZIA est l’un des multi-détecteurs les plus puissants pour contraindre le terme d’asymétrie de l’équation d’état nucléaire. La qualité de l’identification et la grande couverture angulaire permettent également d’étudier la dynamique des collisions nucléaires, le processus d’agrégation à faible densité, ainsi que la structure et les modes de désintégration des noyaux légers. La première expérience INDRA-FAZIA au GANIL a été réalisée en 2019. L’objectif principal est d’étudier les propriétés de transfert d’isospin de la matière nucléaire en mesurant l’évolution de l’équilibre N/Z entre le projectile et la cible de différents contenus initiaux en isospin en fonction de la centralité de la collision. Dans cette contribution, je présenterai le contexte et les premiers résultats de cette expérience.

Abstract

International audience; Profiting from previous works done with the INDRA multidetector on the description of the light response L of the CsI( Tl ) crystals to different impinging nuclei, we propose an improved ΔE−L identification-calibration procedure for Silicon–Caesium Iodide (Si–CsI) telescopes, namely an Advanced Mass Estimate ( AME ) method. AME is compared to the usual, simple visual analysis of the corresponding two-dimensional map of ΔE−E type, by using INDRA experimental data from nuclear reactions induced by heavy ions in the Fermi energy regime. We show that the capability of such telescopes to identify both the atomic Z and the mass A numbers of light and heavy reaction products, can be quantitatively improved thanks to the proposed approach. This conclusion opens new possibilities to use INDRA for studying these reactions especially with radioactive beams. Indeed, the determination of the mass for charged reaction products becomes of paramount importance to shed light on the role of the isospin degree of freedom in the nuclear equation of state [ 1,2 ].

7. Quantitative Bulk and Trace Element X-Ray Mapping Using Multiple Detectors.

Abstract

X-ray mapping using energy dispersive spectroscopy or wavelength dispersive spectroscopy is a very popular characterisation tool for determining the elemental distribution in materials. Furthermore, quantitative X-ray mapping has become a very powerful technique enabling reliable quantitative results that can be an order of magnitude better than traditional analysis. Quantitative X-ray mapping is also far superior to regions of interest X-ray maps where low levels of an element or elemental overlaps are present. The one major drawback with X-ray mapping is the time required to obtain a high resolution X-ray map with good statistics at low levels of concentration. The use of multi-detectors, and just developed dual turret detectors for X-ray mapping, allows improvement in performance at low levels without compromising quantification quality and precision of traces, even in the presence of overlaps. However, for quantitative X-ray mapping to work properly, the characteristics of each detector must be accurately determined so that the final quantification of the individual detectors can be summed. To accomplish this effectively, the full spectrum at each pixel for each energy dispersive detector should be saved. As a final check for consistency between detectors, a technique was developed that involves assigning a different red-green-blue colour for each detector for the same element. By doing this, when we combine the three maps of the same element, we should obtain a grey scale map that indicates total correlation between the three detectors at the most critical final stage of quantification. To reduce contrast noise and further improve the quality of quantitative X-ray mapping images, a filter referred to as a “speckle filter” has been developed that allows the eye to see a more correct elemental concentration relationship. Abstract

Main features of fragments produced in 58Ni+40Ca and 58Ni+48Ca systems at 25 AMeV, collected by Chimera multidetector at INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (Italy), are analysed in order to study properties of moderately excited systems (Ex=2-5 AMeV) formed in central collisions. By means of correlations between specific global variables, sensitive to the centrality of the collision, a stringent selection of Fusion-Evaporation residues, Multifragmentation sources and their decay products has been performed. The influence of the isospin contents of the systems on the reaction mechanism is carefully investigated and relevant observables such as isospin asymmetry N/Z or charge and mass of fragments, are discussed in order to probe the fragmentation path, characterised by short living ( ∼ 100fm/c) low density states of nuclear matter out of equilibrium. Preliminary comparisons with predictions of the BLOB model, in a semi-classical mean field framework, are presented, investigating cluster production emerging from the occurrence of low-density instabilities in central collisions.

Abstract

International audience; The possible existence of cluster structures in 16C has been investigated by inspecting their breakup (induced on CH2 targets) in 10Be+6He events. The excitation energy of the projectile nucleus prior to decay is obtained via an invariant mass analysis of identified fragments. The experiment has been carried out at the FRIBs facility of INFN-LNS, by using a fragmentation cocktail beam at intermediate energies (≈ 55 MeV/nucleon) and the CHIMERA 4π multi-detector. A non-vanishing yield in the 10Be+6He correlations is reported at an excitation energy of about 20.5 MeV in 16C, in analogy with previous works. To improve these results, we recently performed a new experiment by coupling CHIMERA and FARCOS at forward angles. Preliminary details of the new experiment are reported in the text.

Abstract

International audience; Nuclear reactions between medium-mass nuclei at low energy are characterized by the competition between binary and evaporation process in the compound nucleus de-excitation. A study of the influence of the neutron richness of the entrance channel on the decay paths of the compound nuclei formed in the (78) Kr +(40) Ca and (86) Kr +(48) Ca at 10 MeV/A is presented. The experiment has been performed at Laboratori Nazionali del Sud by using the CHIMERA 4π multidetector for charged particles. The Kinematical characteristics of the two reactions support the conclusion of a production via long lived system. Besides the results relative to the n-poor system are compared to those obtained at GANIL, performed at 5.5 AMeV, in order to study the energy influence.

Abstract

CORRELATION experiment has been performed at INFN-LNS of Catania, using the 4pi multi-detector CHIMERA, with the aim of exploring correlations between two and multi light particle produced in 12C+24Mg collisions at 35 AMeV. Particular attention has been paid to the decay mechanisms of Hoyle state, an excited resonant state of 12C produced via the triple- alfa process and characterized by a pronounced molecular like structure with three-alfa particles. The study of the Hoyle state is essential for nucleosynthesis, but it also represents a clearly isolated state that can be studied as a three-alfa cluster system.

Abstract

Objectives: To compare unenhanced low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) and ultrasound (US) in patients with suspected acute appendicitis. Methods: A total of 104 patients underwent US and LDCT examinations within an hour. Results: Thirty-nine of the 104 patients had surgically confirmed acute appendicitis. Sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy for US vs. LDCT were 82.5% vs. 92.5%, 83% vs. 89%, and 82.7% vs. 90.4%, respectively. The area under the curve (Az) was 0.85 for US and 0.92 for LDCT. 13. Global trends for kp? Expanding the frontier of ester side chain topography in acrylates and methacrylates

Abstract

The Arrhenius parameters of the propagation rate coefficient for two linear methacrylates, two branched methacrylates, and two branched acrylates are determined via the pulsed laser polymerization-size exclusion chromatography (PLP-SEC) method. The Mark-Houwink-Kuhn-Sakurada parameters of these polymers are additionally determined via multidetector SEC of narrowly distributed polymer samples obtained through fractionation, allowing for a correct SEC calibration in the PLP-SEC experiment. The data obtained for stearyl methacrylate (SMA, A = 3.45 (-1.17 to +4.46) × 106 L·mol-1·s-1; Ea = 21.49 (-1.59 to +1.90) kJ·mol-1) and behenyl methacrylate (BeMA, A = 2.51 (-0.80 to +3.06) × 106 L·mol-1·s -1; Ea = 20.52 (-1.43 to +1.85) kJ·mol -1) underpin the trend of increasing kp with increasing ester side chain length. Propylheptyl methacrylate (PHMA, A = 2.83 (-0.82 to 3.15) × 106 L·mol-1·s-1; Ea = 21.72 (-1.20 to +1.64) kJ·mol-1) and heptadecanyl methacrylate (C17MA, A = 2.04 (-0.66 to +1.71) × 10 6 L·mol-1·s-1; Ea = 20.72 (-1.42 to +1.38) kJ·mol-1) can be described as a family of branched methacrylates jointly with isodecyl methacrylate and ethylhexyl methacrylate (both published previously), resulting in joint Arrhenius parameters of A = 2.39 (-0.51 to +0.84) × 106 L·mol -1·s-1 and Ea = 21.16 (-0.78 to +0.76) kJ·mol-1. In addition, the corresponding branched acrylates are studied applying high-frequency PLP at a 500 Hz laser repetition rate, resulting in Arrhenius parameters of A = 1.05 (-0.42 to +2.81) × 10 7 L·mol-1·s-1 and Ea = 16.41 (-1.99 to +2.42) kJ·mol-1 for propylheptyl acrylate (PHA) and A = 8.15 (-2.83 to +10.3) × 106 L·mol -1·s-1 and Ea = 14.66 (-1.49 to +1.66) kJ·mol-1 for heptadecanyl acrylate (C17A). © 2012 American Chemical Society.

14. A perfect couple: PLP/SEC/ESI-MS for the accurate determination of propagation rate coefficients in free radical polymerization

Abstract

Pulsed laser polymerization (PLP) in conjunction with online size exclusion chromatography electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (SEC/ESI-MS) has successfully been applied for the determination of accurate propagation rate coefficients, kp, in free radical polymerization. SEC/ESI-MS is used in this context to precisely determine the molecular weight distribution of the polymer produced by the PLP-experiment. The novel approach allows for a highly accurate internal calibration of the size exclusion system to be obtained from first principles, as the molecular weight of the polymer is determined with ppm accuracy by the mass spectrometer and allows corrections for SEC band broadening effects to be made. Molecular weight measurements can furthermore be performed regardless of the monomer class, as long as the macromolecule is amenable to electrospray ionization. The proposed approach successfully eliminates work-steps and problems incurred in the analysis of new and poorly characterized monomers, where universal calibration or multi-detector SEC had to be applied until now and provides an alternative also to PLP/MALDI-MS. Applicability of the method is demonstrated tor the homologous series of methyl-, ethyl- and butyl methacrylate. The experimentally determined kp values were 5-10% higher than the currently available benchmark data. The experimental k p is in agreement with the results of kinetic simulations, assuming a short chain length dependency of kp, in accordance with the empirical model of Smith, Heuts and Russell.
