Abstract

International audience; Current models for multi-agent organizations offer effective abstractions to build distributed systems, but lack a systematic way to address exceptions. This demonstration presents an exception handling mechanism in the context of the JaCaMo framework, based on the notions of responsibility and feedback. The mechanism is seamlessly integrated within organizational concepts, such as goals and norms.

Abstract

International audience; Agent organizations offer powerful abstractions to build distributed systems. Current models, however, lack of a systematic way to address exceptions as part of their design. Thus, exception handling is usually approached by ad-hoc solutions, that hamper code modularization and decoupling. We present an extension of the organizational model and infrastructure adopted in JaCaMo, that explicitly encompasses the notion of exception as a first-class element in the design of an organization. Relying on such a model, we propose an exception handling mechanism that is seamlessly integrated with organizational concepts, such as responsibilities, goals and norms.

In this article we give a high-level overview of various aspects relevant to multi-agent decision making. Classical decision theory makes the start. Then, we introduce multi-agent decision making, focussing on game theory, complex decision making, and on intelligent agents. Afterwards, we discuss methods for reaching agreements interactively, e.g. by negotiation, bargaining, and argumentation, followed by approaches to coordinate and to control agents' decision making. Abstract

This paper addresses the notion of context in multiagent systems from an organisational point of view. Setting out from the RICA metamodel that shapes the agents' space of interaction on the basis of hierarchical organisational and communicative abstractions, we propose Interaction State Machines as a new formalism for the specification and enactment of multiagent interaction protocols. By means of examples from the FIPA interaction protocol library, we show how this formalism allows for a successive refinement of interaction protocols, and how this process is guided by the organisational model underlying a multiagent application. Abstract

Organizations change with the dynamics of the world. To enable organizations to change, certain structures and capabilities are needed. As all processes, a change process has an organization of its own. In this paper it is shown how within a formal organization modeling approach also organizational change processes can be modeled. A generic organization model (covering both organization structure and behavior) for organizational change is presented and formally evaluated for a case study. This model takes into account different phases in a change process considered in Organization Theory literature, such as unfreezing, movement and refreezing. Moreover, at the level of individuals, the internal beliefs and their changes are incorporated in the model. Abstract

The background for this paper is a development that the Danish hospitals are undertaking which requires the establishment of a common emergency department. It is uncertain exactly what and how many resources the department needs and so resources are assigned dynamically as seen necessary by the staff. Such dynamic adjustments pose a challenge in predicting what consequences these adjustments may lead to. We propose an approach to deal with this challenge that applies simulation with intelligent agents and logics for organizational reasoning. We present some of the expected obstacles with this approach and potential ways to overcome them.
