There is a striking absence of information on women managers in Latin America despite the fact that, in the past decade, studies of women managers in non-English speaking countries have proliferated. This study offers a preliminary analysis of Mexican women managers. Our exploratory study locates women managers within the context of gender relations and managerial ideology in Mexico and analyzes several factors that enable a select group of senior-level Mexican women to hold influential positions. The findings suggest that women have a nontraditional Mexican management style and successfully manage the work-family interface. Temporal discontinuities and delay caused by packet loss or communication latency often occur in multimodal telepresence systems. It is known that such artifacts can influence the feeling of presence [1]. However, it is largely unknown how the packet loss and communication latency affect the temporal perception of multisensory events. In this article, we simulated random packet dropouts and communication latency in the visual modality and investigated the effects on the temporal discrimination of visual-haptic collisions. Our results demonstrated that the synchronous perception of crossmodal events was very sensitive to the packet loss rate. The packet loss caused the impression of time delay and influenced the perception of the subsequent events. The perceived time of the visual event increased linearly, and the temporal discrimination deteriorated, with increasing packet loss rate. The perceived time was also influenced by the communication delay, which caused time to be slightly overestimated.

Physiological and cognitive models of vision agree that the pre-attentive processing of visual stimuli is organized in a parallel and segregated fashion. However, several incompatible models have been proposed for the subsequent processing stages. They differ in their assumptions about architecture (serial, parallel, or coactive/integrative), stopping-rules (self-terminating, or exhaustive), spatial specificity of saliency signal coding (signal pooling across locations, or spatially distinct processing), and dependency of target detection on the prior allocation of attention (pre-attentive, or post-selective). We review how studies employing the redundant-signals paradigm in visual pop-out search contribute to discerning between the different assumptions. We find strong support for the notion of a saliency map, into which feature contrast signals are pooled, and especially the dimension weighting account (1) receives further support: Instead of a priming mechanism that could increase weights for several dimensions independently, evidence favors a weighting mechanism that effectively limits the total weight available for allocation to the various dimensions through competitive interactions, whereby increasing the weight for one dimension goes along with decreasing the weights for other dimensions.

Spatial information processing with respect to an egocentric reference frame has been shown to recruit a fronto-parietal network along the dorsal stream. The present study investigates how brain lesions in the relevant areas affect the ability to navigate through computer-simulated tunnels shown from a first person perspective. Our results suggest that parietal, but not frontal, patients are impaired in this task. They confused the direction of tunnel turns more frequently and made less accurate judgments about the location of the end position. Errors in map drawing suggest that the impairment may be linked to deficits in updating cognitive heading in the absence of corresponding perceptual information from the virtual environment.

The present study investigated the usability of whole and partial report of briefly displayed letter arrays as a diagnostic tool for the assessment of attentional functions. The tool is based on Bundesen's (1990, 1998, 2002; Bundesen et al., 2005) theory of visual attention (TVA), which assumes four separable attentional components: processing speed, working memory storage capacity, spatial distribution of attention, and top-down control. A number of studies (Duncan et al., 1999; Habekost & Bundesen, 2003; Peers et al., 2005) have already demonstrated the clinical relevance of these parameters. The present study was designed to examine whether (a) a shortened procedure bears sufficient accuracy and reliability, (b) whether the procedures reveal attentional constructs with clinical relevance, and (c) whether the mathematically independent parameters are also empirically independent. In a sample of 35 young healthy subjects, we found high intraparameter correlations between full- and short-length tests and sufficient internal consistencies as measured via a bootstrapping method. The clinical relevance of the TVA parameters was demonstrated by significant correlations with established clinical tests measuring similar constructs. The empirical independence of the four TVA parameters is suggested by nonsignificant or, in the case of processing speed and working memory storage capacity, only modest correlations between the parameter values.

Four pop-out search experiments investigated whether dimension-based visual attention is top-down modulable. Observers searched for singleton feature targets defined, variably across trials, by a color or an orientation difference to nontargets. Observers were precued to the most probable target-defining dimension (e.g., by the word color) or feature (red) on a given trial. Results revealed expedited reaction times (RTs) for valid-dimension targets relative to neutral-cue conditions, and slowed RTs for invalid-dimension targets. Cue information as to precise target feature yielded some extra effect only for color targets. The dimensional cuing significantly reduced, but did not abolish, the dimension-specific influence of the previous target on detection of the current target (same-dimension RT < different-dimension RT). These findings confirm that top-down dimensional set modulates stimulus-driven dimension processes in the detection of pop-out signals. ((c) 2003 APA, all rights reserved)

The aim of this study was to measure the energetic consequences of hypoxia in different types of skeletal muscle within a single tilapia species (n = 5). To that aim, 81.0 MHz (31)P-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra were collected, alternately, from three surface coils placed adjacent to the tissues of interest (dorsal white muscle, ventral white muscle, and lateral red muscle) during a graded hypoxia load over 6 h followed by a 5-h recovery period. The fish were contained in a flow cell, enabling us full control of the oxygen content of the bathing medium. The intracellular pH and the concentrations of ATP, phosphocreatine (PCr), and P(i) were determined from the NMR spectra. For normoxia, biochemical differences for [gamma-ATP], [PCr], and [sugar phosphates] (SP) were observed between all three locations, especially between the red and white muscle. During hypoxia stress, loss of phosphorylated compounds (PCr+P(i)+SP) was observed at all locations but was the most severe in red muscle. When the aerobic (respirometry) and anaerobic ((31)P-NMR) ATP production via an energy balance are compared, flexible metabolic depression is demonstrated during anaerobioses. It is concluded that control of the aerobic and anaerobic component of metabolism during metabolic depression is independent of each other.

Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis in the common marmoset, a nonhuman primate species (Callithrix jacchus), is a new model for multiple sclerosis. Given the close immunological relationship between marmosets and humans, it is an attractive model for investigating immunopathological pathways relevant to multiple sclerosis and to evaluate new treatments for the disease. Unlike in the originally documented model, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis induced without the use of Bordetella pertussis led to a chronic disease of moderate severity. The clinical course of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis in the present model was mainly chronic and progressive, but periods of incomplete remission did occur. At the chronic stage of the disease, actively demyelinating lesions were found together with inactive demyelinated and remyelinated (shadow) plaques. Before immunization and during clinically active experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, T1- and T2-weighted magnetic resonance brain images were obtained. Correlation of the data from the magnetic resonance images and the neuropathology analysis revealed that the hyperintense regions in T2-weighted images represented both active and inactive remyelinating lesions. Quantification showed that the number of lesions in T2-weighted magnetic resonance images equalled those found by pathological examination, and thus T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging can be used to discern the total lesion load. Extravasation of gadolinium-diethylenetriamine-penta-acetic acid (triple dose) was found only in lesions, which by histopathology were shown to be engaged in the process of active demyelination.

Objectives: To investigate the influence of mesothelial cell (MC) seeding on patency and neointimal formation of small diameter ePTFE grafts in a canine model., Materials and Methods: MC were isolated from the omentum, cultured, seeded on fibronectin-coated ePTFE grafts (4 cm, 4 mm ID), and implanted in the carotid artery of five Beagle dogs. Each dog also received a non-seeded control graft. Patency was assessed by palpation immediately after implantation, and non-invasively by magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) after 1 week and just prior to sacrifice (4 weeks). Intimal thickness was quantified on histological sections by use of computer-aided morphometry., Results: All grafts were patent after implantation. After 1 week, MRA showed the loss of lumen diameter in two seeded grafts. After 4 weeks, two seeded grafts were occluded, one seeded graft was severely stenosed, and all others were without angiographic lumen reduction. Histology and morphometry confirmed that two seeded grafts were occluded, and demonstrated that the other three seeded grafts showed significantly more intima formation (0.22-1.34 mm) than the control grafts (< 0.08 mm; p < 0.01)., Conclusions: The MC seeding process decreases patency and increases neointimal formation of small diameter ePTFE grafts in dogs and does not seem to be useful for reduction of graft thrombogenicity.

The reason(s) for the atherogenic properties of Lp(a) lipoprotein is still unclear, and several mechanisms have been studied. Alterations in gene expression in endothelial cells (ECs) could be important with respect to risk for coronary heart disease (CHD). We have tested the effects of Lp(a) lipoprotein or the apolipoprotein of Lp(a) lipoprotein (apo(a)) on cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) with respect to: (1) the level of endothelin-1 (ET-1) mRNA; (2) release of ET-1 into the culture medium; (3) plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) secretion into the culture medium and; (4) total gene expression in HUVECs, examined by a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based technique, differential display-reverse transcription-PCR (DD-RT-PCR). Lp(a) lipoprotein reduced the level of ET-1 mRNA as well as the release of ET-1. The reduction of ET-1 in the medium was even more pronounced when HUVECs were incubated with apo(a), but we found no effect of apo(a) on ET-1 mRNA level. Neither Lp(a) lipoprotein nor apo(a) had a significant influence on PAI-1 secretion. DD-RT-PCR revealed 11 fragments that could represent differences between cells exposed or not exposed to Lp(a) lipoprotein. Following subcloning and sequencing, 18 sequences that differed between exposed and unexposed cultures were obtained. Four of the subcloned fragments have up to now been used as a probe for northern blot analyses, and one fragment was confirmed to be regulated by Lp(a) lipoprotein. In conclusion, Lp(a) lipoprotein is shown to control ET-1 mRNA levels and the function of at least one more gene, the nature of which is unknown.

The kinetic properties of the cytoplasmic and the mitochondrial iso-enzymes of creatine kinase from striated muscle were studied in vitro and in vivo. The creatine kinase (CK) iso-enzyme family has a multi-faceted role in cellular energy metabolism and is characterized by a complex pattern of tissue-specific expression and subcellular distribution. In mammalian tissues, there is always co-expression of at least two different CK isoforms. As a result, previous studies into the role of CK in energy metabolism have not been able to directly differentiate between the individual CK species. Here, we describe experiments which were directed at achieving this goal. First, we studied the kinetic properties of the muscle-specific cytoplasmic and mitochondrial CK isoforms in purified form under in vitro conditions, using a combination of P-31 NMR and spectrophotometry. Secondly, P-31 NMR measurements of the flux through the CK reaction were carried out on intact skeletal and heart muscle from wild-type mice and from transgenic mice, homozygous for a complete deficiency of the muscle-type cytoplasmic CK isoform. Skeletal muscle and heart were compared because they differ strongly in the relative abundance of the CK isoforms. The present data indicate that the kinetic properties of cytoplasmic and mitochondrial CK are substantially different, both in vitro and in vivo. This finding particularly has implications for the interpretation of in vivo studies with P-31 NMR.

Proton magnetic resonance imaging enables non-invasive monitoring of lesion formation in multiple sclerosis and has an important role in assessing the potential effects of therapy. T2-weighted and short tau inversion recovery magnetic resonance imaging were used to assess the effect of a neurotrophic adrenocorticotrophic hormone analogue [H-Met(O(2))-Glu-His-Phe-D-Lys-Phe-OH] on the volume of lesions in the brains of rats suffering from chronic experimental allergic encephalomyelitis, an animal equivalent of multiple sclerosis. Lesion volume was monitored during a five-month period. Magnetic resonance imaging indicated that treatment with the adrenocorticotrophic hormone analogue significantly reduced the lesion volume by 84 and 85% 10 and 20 weeks after lesion induction, respectively. Furthermore, peptide treatment significantly reduced chronic experimental allergic encephalomyelitis-related neurological symptoms during the chronic phase of the disease (week 3 until week 20 after lesion induction). Both functional and morphological recovery were considerably advanced by peptide treatment. Twenty weeks after lesion induction rats with chronic experimental allergic encephalomyelitis were killed for histological analysis, to correlate magnetic resonance imaging findings with morphological changes. The regions of abnormally high signal intensities on T2-weighted magnetic resonance images coincided with areas of demyelination and concomitant widespread inflammatory infiltration, oedema formation and enlarged ventricles. The improved neurological status and the 84% reduction in the lesion volume in the cerebrum of rats chronic experimental allergic encephalomyelitis point to the potential value of trophic peptides in the development of strategies for limiting the damage caused by central demyelinating lesions in syndromes such as multiple sclerosis.

This article describes the use of non-invasive magnetic resonance (MR) methods for the characterization and monitoring of the pathophysiology of experimental brain injury in laboratory animals as a function of time and treatment. The impact of MR in brain research is primarily due to its non-invasive nature, thereby enabling repeated measurements in long-term studies, and due to the type of information that it provides. MR imaging (MRI) enables the measurement of the morphology/anatomy as well as the functional status of tissues under in vivo conditions. Compared to other in vivo imaging modalities, MRI has a high spatial resolution and allows for a remarkable soft tissue differentiation. MR spectroscopy (MRS) provides information on the biochemical/metabolic status of tissues. MR methods which have proven valuable in animal studies, can be readily translated to the clinical situation where MR-based diagnosis and treatment planning play a rapidly increasing role. After a short introduction into the principles of MR, we will illustrate the remarkable versatility of MR in research on brain injury from recent animal studies. Examples will be mainly drawn from experiments on early injury in focai cerebral ischemia and from research on mechanical brain trauma and excitotoxic lesions. The article ends with a brief description of the perspectives of MR in neuropsychiatry.

In vivo 1H-NMR imaging was employed to study dynamic changes in the status of tissue water as a function of time after mechanical brain injury induced by partial unilateral transection of the fimbria fornix (FF) in the rat brain and was correlated with histology. Changes in the brain tissue were reproducibly found in distinct regions which were exclusively located in the lesioned hemisphere. The most pronounced changes concerned the lateral ventricle. Ventricular enlargement became evident posterior to the site of transection after a few hours and was maximal after 2-4 days. At later time points the posterior ventricular expansion was reduced. The lateral ventricle anterior to the site of transection was significantly enlarged from day 1 and continued to expand for up to 7 months. Tissue response at the site of transection, mainly involving the hippocampal formation and the thalamus, was first manifested after 24 h, while signs of progressive tissue degeneration were apparent in the long term.

This study was designed to assess whether contrast-enhanced dynamic 1H magnetic resonance imaging (DMRI) can be used to detect the effects of the loop diuretic furosemide and the vasoactive peptide angiotensin II on tubular water reabsorption in the rat kidney. A bolus of gadolinium-DTPA-dimeglumine (Gd-DTPA) (0.025 or 0.1 mmol/kg) was used as a contrast agent. The signal intensity in the magnetic resonance images relative to the precontrast signal intensity (RSI) was assessed as a function of time in the cortex and medulla. In the cortex, no differences were observed between high and low bolus injection, and between different treatment groups and controls. In the medulla, RSI patterns were different between high and low bolus, with the high bolus showing lower RSI values, because of T2 shortening at high Gd-DTPA concentrations. No difference was observed between controls and angiotensin II-infused animals. This is in line with the finding that angiotensin II did not alter medullary water reabsorption, as evidenced by unchanged urine flow and osmolality compared with controls. Medullary RSI patterns during furosemide infusion differed markedly from controls, in a manner suggesting that a lower concentration of Gd-DTPA was present compared with controls. This agrees with the well-known inhibiting effect of furosemide on medullary water reabsorption. It was concluded that, with the method used, small concentration differences of Gd-DTPA in the cortex resulting from small changes of plus or minus 20% in tubular water reabsorption, previously found to be present by direct micropuncture measurements, cannot be detected in rats. However, large changes in renal concentrating ability do result in different RSI patterns in the medulla.

The changing ethnic, racial, and gender workforce characteristics require innovations in management philosophy and practice. Valuing employees' differences is believed to be a competitive advantage in many modern corporations. This article offers recommendations to health care managers for rethinking and improving the management of their heterogeneous workforces. A conceptual framework and evaluative criteria are developed in an attempt to better understand the factors that influence effective diversity management. The experiences of health services institutions in the Southwest (already a multicultural region) are studied to illustrate various approaches to diversity management. Leader philosophy and support, organizational policies and programs, workforce composition, structural integration, and organizational type constitute the main elements in this study. As the nation debates restructuring the health industry, it should also take the opportunity to integrate a management philosophy that values diversity and its practice.

Mechanical lesions of the fimbria fornix (FF) have been widely used as a model to investigate the recovery of damaged brain tissue. 1H-NMR imaging was employed to non-invasively measure changes in the brain after unilateral FF transection. Rats were subjected to NMR imaging at various times after the lesions were made. The experimental protocol included (multislice) T2-weighted and diffusion-weighted imaging thereby allowing the construction of two-dimensional maps of the relaxation time T2 (transverse or spine-spin relaxation time) and the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) of water. FF transection induced considerable changes in the status of the brain tissue at a number of different locations which were exclusively present in the affected hemisphere. At 1 day post-lesion the region of the lateral ventricle and hippocampus started to display pronounced changes in that T2- and diffusion-weighted images showed a hyperintensity and a hypointensity, respectively. These effects were maximal around day 2 to 4 whereafter a slow recovery towards the control situation was observed. Immediately after transection the FF lesion itself could be visualized. These early images pointed to an aspecific disruption of the tissue due to the mechanical intervention. Interestingly, however, from day 2 post-lesion a number of changes became evident in this region which seemed to be localized to specific structures, including the ventricle and hippocampus. After one month the presumably ventricle effect dominated and was predominantly localized to the anterior side of the FF lesion.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

A connectionist model of visual search is presented, in which search is determined by patterns of grouping between distractors and between the target and the distractors. Grouping is based on conjunctive relations between simple form elements (corners, line-end terminators), and uses principles of similarity and spatial proximity. In its normal, 'unlesioned' state, the model simulates the search data generated by human subjects when they search for simple form conjunctions amongst either homogeneous or heterogeneous distractors (Humphreys & Muller, in press). In this paper, the performance of the model is examined after the model is subject to various types of 'lesion'. 'Lesioning' is produced either by increasing the internal noise on the activation functions governing the interactions between processing units, or by eliminating processing units from different loci in the model. Increasing the internal noise within the model, or lesioning units within 'high-level' processing stages, can generate the selective effects on search found in a detailed single case study of an agnosic patient (Humphreys, Riddoch, Quinlan, Price & Donnelly, this volume): Namely, there is selective disruption of search for a form conjunction amongst homogeneous distractors relative to search for the same target amongst heterogeneous distractors. This selective effect can be attributed to the 'lesion' disrupting grouping between distractors, which normally facilitates search with homogeneous distractors. The simulations demonstrate that (1) search processes can be disrupted by adding internal noise to search functions, (2) that there can be selective effects on grouping processes, and (3) that these selective effects can be associated with different types of lesion to different stages in the model. The implications of the simulations for understanding visual processing impairments in agnosia are discussed.

Noninvasive NMR methodology has been developed to enable monitoring of 13C-labeled xenobiotics in the rat in vivo. 2,2-Dichloro-1-(2-chlorophenyl)-1-(4-chlorophenyl)-[3-13C]-propane can be detected in the liver of intact rats by in vivo 13C surface coil NMR spectroscopy after ip administration of the compound. The experiments were performed at 1.9 and 9.4 Tesla. The intrahepatic changes of the signal intensity of the labeled compound were followed as a function of time. In the days following administration, the concentration decreased and dropped to values below the detection limit after 12 days. The study demonstrates the feasibility of studies on pharmacokinetics of 13C-labeled compounds in the rat using noninvasive, in vivo surface coil NMR spectroscopy in animals. The sensitivity allows the detection of a single dose of the drug of 200 mg/kg, but can be improved.

A spatial cueing paradigm was used to (a) investigate the effects of attentional orienting on spatial and temporal parameters of saccadic eye movements and (b) examine hypotheses regarding the hierarchical programming of saccade direction and amplitude. On a given trial, the subjects were presented with one of three peripheral cues: a "valid" cue provided correct information, a "neutral" cue no information and an "invalid" cue incorrect information about the location of the subsequent target (the cue was valid on about 50% of the trials). 100 or 500 msec after the cue onset (stimulus onset asynchrony, SOA), the eye movement target was presented at one of six possible locations (from -11.25 degrees to +11.25 degrees, at 3.75 degrees spacing). The results showed a significant effect of cueing on saccade latencies at the 100 msec, but no effect at the 500 msec SOA. The cueing benefits were restricted to the cued location; no other locations within the cued or uncued hemi-field were facilitated. The invalid trial latencies showed: (a) no advantage for targets on the same side as the cue relative to the opposite side, (b) no advantage for targets more proximal to the cue and (c) no advantage for targets sharing the same eccentricity as the cue. In a second experiment, subjects responded to the target by giving a simple manual response [simple reaction time (RT)] while keeping the eyes stationary. The results showed a significant cueing effect on simple RTs both at the 100 msec and, in contrast to saccadic eye movements, the 500 msec SOA. There were specific benefits for targets at the cued location relative to other targets within the same and opposite hemi-fields. Further, in contrast to saccades, there was a general advantage for targets within the same ("cued") hemi-field over targets in the opposite hemi-field. These findings suggest that, for saccadic eye movements (overt orienting), direction and amplitude are programmed holistically; whereas in covert orienting (with eyes stationary), motor parameters (e.g. for directed hand movements) are programmed in a more hierarchical fashion.

This study demonstrates that the xenobiotic product, 1-(o-chlorophenyl)-1-(p-chlorophenyl)-2,2-dichloro-3-13C-propane can be monitored in the liver of an intact animal by in vivo 13C surface coil NMR spectroscopy after intraperitoneal administration. The carbon-13 label could be detected after a single dose of only 200 mg/kg of the product. The intrahepatic changes of the signal intensity of the labeled product were monitored as a function of time. No signals corresponding to metabolites could be detected.

This paper analyzes retrenchment in health care organizations in terms of prescriptions in the literature and the actual responses of health care executives to retrenchment. Case studies of five organizations indicate that the range of coping strategies is much more limited than the range of possibilities suggested in the literature. Constraints within the culture of the organization are suggested as an explanation for this disparity.

Retrenchment is a problem confronting many public, private, and voluntary healthcare organizations. With budgetary restrictions in the public sector and the shift toward prospective payment systems and diagnosis-related reimbursement by third-party payors, healthcare executives must address several dilemmas and choices. Yet, retrenchment should not necessarily be viewed as a problem with limited alternatives. It may represent a time for capitalizing on opportunities and for creating innovation within healthcare institutions. Indeed, innovation may represent the only means for survival. This article evaluates the management strategies that transform retrenchment from a problem into an opportunity.

By means of in vivo 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) we measured energy stores and intracellular pH at 10-min intervals in the myotome of unanesthetized carp and goldfish before, during, and after a period of anoxia (1 h for carp and 4 h for goldfish). The fish were mounted in a modified bioprobe, and their gills were irrigated with a constant flow of aerated or anoxic water. Anoxia caused a steep decline of phosphocreatine and intracellular pH in carp muscle. After the phosphocreatine stores had been exhausted by greater than 85%, [ATP] fell, whereas IMP and phosphodiesters accumulated. In goldfish muscle, initial changes followed the same pattern, but after 20 min a steady state of high-energy phosphates was reached and the development of acidosis was dampened. The resistance of goldfish to anoxia is due to metabolic suppression and a switch from lactate to ethanol and CO2 as the anaerobic end products. In both species, recovery was complete within 3 h. The fast pH recovery seems to be mainly caused by H+ and lactic acid efflux.

A method is presented to determine albumin and immunoglobulin G (IgG) in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) with an automatic discrete analyser. Concentrations of albumin and IgG in serum and CSF are compared with values obtained by radial immunodiffusion (RID). Ratios of albumin in CSF over albumin in serum and the so-called IgG index are calculated. Ratios obtained with the discrete analyser and with the RID are compared and discussed with respect to clinical diagnosis.

In the 21st line of the fifth paragraph of the article "Genetic damage produced by radiation," by H. J. Muller, in the issue of 17 June, page 837, the word not was inadvertently omitted.
