Search

Conversion between binary and decimal floating-point representations is ubiquitous. Floating-point radix conversion means converting both the exponent and the mantissa. We develop an atomic operation for FP radix conversion with simple straight-line algorithm, suitable for hardware design. Exponent conversion is performed with a small multiplication and a lookup table. It yields the correct result without error. Mantissa conversion uses a few multiplications and a small lookup table that is shared amongst all types of conversions. The accuracy changes by adjusting the computing precision.

Data of the 1996 outburst of the single-known accreting millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658, taken with the Wide Field Cameras (WFCs) on BeppoSAX, are revisited with more complete data coverage and more comprehensive analysis techniques than in a previous report. An additional type-I X-ray burst was identified which occurred at a time when the persistent emission is below the detection limit, roughly 30 days after outburst maximum. This burst is three times longer than the first two bursts, and 50% brighter. It is the brightest burst within the ~1700 type-I bursts detected so far with the WFCs. A spectral analysis of the data reveals a distance to SAX J1808.4-3658 of ~2.5 kpc. This is an update from a previously reported value of 4 kpc. We present the evidence that we have for the presence of oscillations at the pulsar frequency during part of the newly found burst. Such an oscillation would lend support to the idea that the frequency of millisecond burst oscillations in other objects is very close to the neutron star rotation frequency., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

GRB 991014 is one of the shortest gamma-ray bursts detected so far with the Wide Field Cameras aboard BeppoSAX, both in gamma-rays and X-rays. The duration is 9.6 sec in 2-28 keV and 3.2 sec in 40 to 700 keV (as measured between the times when 5 and 95% of the burst photons have been accumulated). We refine the InterPlanetary Network annulus of the burst, present the detection of the X-ray afterglow of GRB 991014 within this refined annulus, and discuss X-ray and gamma-ray observations of the prompt and afterglow emission. Except for the briefness of the prompt event, no other unusual aspects were found in the prompt and afterglow observations as compared to such measurements in previous gamma-ray bursts., Comment: accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal

We report on the long term monitoring of the GINGA transient source GS 1826-238 performed with the BeppoSAX Wide Fiels Camera (WFC) instrument, during four different observing campaigns covering October 1996 - September 1999. WFC detection of type-I bursting activity from the source ruled out its proposed black hole candidacy and clearly suggested the compact object related to GS 1826-238 to be a weakly magnetized neutron star. The analysis of the arrival times of the observed 78 bursts lead to the discovery of a recurrence of ~5.75 hours with a spread of 38 minutes (FWHM) along more than 3 years monitoring data (Ubertini et al., 1999). We performed a more detailed analysis of the whole available data, and evidence of shortening of the recurrence time, together with a drastic narrowing in the spread (down to a few minutes) was observed on a one year time scale. During more than 3 years (August 1996-October 1999) monitoring of a 40x40 degree sky region around the Galactic Centre by the Wide Field Cameras on board BeppoSAX, a total of 8 type-I bursts have been detected from a sky position consistent with that of 4U 1812-12, a likely neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary. We present the results of a detailed study of the bursts of 4U 1812-12, about 15 years after the last reported observations of X-ray bursts from this source (Murakami et al. 1983). Clear evidence for photospheric radius expansion due to Eddington-limited burst luminosity is present in most of the observed events, allowing an accurate estimate of the source distance (~4 kpc) and its burst parameters., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in A&A main journal

We discuss observations of the prompt X and gamma-ray emission and X-ray afterglow from GRB981226. This event has the weakest gamma-ray peak flux detected with the Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor. It shows an isolated X-ray precursor and the highest X-ray to gamma-ray fluence ratio measured thus far with the Wide Field Cameras. The event was followed up with the Narrow Field Instruments, and the X-ray afterglow was detected up to 10 keV. The afterglow flux is observed to rise from a level below the sensitivity of the MECS/LECS telescopes up to a peak flux of (5 +/-1) * 10^(-13) erg cm-2 s-1, in the 2-10 keV energy band. This rise is followed by a decline according to a power law with index of 1.31 (+0.44,-0.39). We report the X/gamma-ray spectrum of GRB971214 and of its afterglow. The afterglow was measured few hours after the main event and for an elapsed time of more than two days. The measure of this GRB and afterglow is relevant due to its extreme, cosmological distance (z=3.42). The prompt event shows a hard photon spectrum, consistent with a broken power law with photon indices Gamma_X~0.1 below ~20 keV and Gamma_g~1.3 above 60 keV. The afterglow spectrum, measured with the MECS and LECS BeppoSAX telescopes, is consistent with a power law with spectral photon index Gamma=1.6. Within the statistical accuracy of our measure no spectral evolution is detected during the observation of the afterglow. When integrated during the time span covered by BeppoSAX observations, the power in the afterglow emission, even with very conservative assumptions, is at least comparable with the power in the main event. The IR-to-X rays broad band spectrum is also presented, collecting data from the literature and adding them to the BeppoSAX measure. It shows that the predictions from synchrotron emission models is qualitatively confirmed. The BeppoSAX measurement of the X and gamma ray spectrum of this GRB/afterglow is discussed in the framework of current theoretical models., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. SAX J1819.3-2525 is a nearby X-ray transient which exhibited a fast and large X-ray outburst on Sep. 15, 1999 (Smith et al. 1999). The Wide Field Cameras and the Narrow Field Instruments (NFI) on board BeppoSAX observed SAX J1819.3-2525 at various stages of its activity before that, in the spring and fall of 1999. The fluxes range between 0.012 and 0.3 Crab units (2-10 keV). The NFI observation is unique because it is the longest semi-continuous observation of SAX J1819.3-2525 so far, and it offers a study of the spectrum at a relatively high resolution of 8% full width at half maximum at 6 keV. We discuss the observations with emphasis on the X-ray spectrum. A strong Fe-K emission line was detected in SAX J1819.3-2525 with an equivalent width between 0.3 and 1 keV. The line energy is up to 6.85 +/- 0.02 keV and suggests the presence of highly ionized iron. We identify this as fluorescent emission from a photo-ionized plasma. The continuum spectrum is typical for a low-mass X-ray binary in which emission from an accretion disk corona plays an important role. There is no sign of an eclipse or periodic signal due to the binary orbit in this exposure, despite the fact that the twin jets seen at radio wavelengths suggest a high inclination angle., Comment: 8 pages, accepted for publication in A&A Main Journal

We present some statistical considerations on the BeppoSAX hunt for subsecond GRBs at the Scientific Operation Center. Archive analysis of a BATSE/SAX sub-sample of bursts indicates that the GRB Monitor is sensitive to short (< 2 sec) events, that are in fact about 22% of the total. The non-detection of corresponding prompt X-ray counterparts to short bursts in the Wide Field Cameras, in about 3 years of operations, is discussed: with present data no implications on the X-to-gamma-ray spectra of short vs long GRBs may be inferred. We investigated the spectral evolution in the 2--700 keV energy band of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) detected by the Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor (GRBM) and localized with the Wide Field Cameras (WFCs) aboard the BeppoSAX satellite before May 1998. Most of them have been followed-up with the Narrow Field Instruments aboard the same satellite. In the light of these results we discuss open issues on the GRB phenomenon. We find that the optically thin synchrotron shock model (SSM) provides an acceptable representation of most of the time-resolved GRB spectra extending down to 2 keV, except in the initial phases of several bursts and during the whole duration of the quite strong GRB970111, where a low-energy photon depletion with respect to the thin SSM spectrum is observed. We find that the X-ray afterglow starts at about 50% of the GRB duration, and that its fluence, as computed from the WFC light curve, is consistent with the decay law found from the afterglow NFI observations. We also investigate the hydrodynamical evolution of the GRB in our sample and their associated afterglow, when it was detected. We find that the photon index of the latest spectrum of the GRB prompt emission is correlated with the index of the afterglow fading law, when available, as expected on the basis of an external shock of a relativistic fireball., Comment: 35 pages, 1 LaTeX file, 20 postscript figures, 1 postscript table, accepted for pubblication in Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series. We present BeppoSAX follow-up observations of GRB980425 obtained with the Narrow Field Instruments (NFI) in April, May, and November 1998. The first NFI observation has detected within the 8' radius error box of the GRB an X-ray source positionally consistent with the supernova 1998bw, which exploded within a day of GRB980425, and a fainter X-ray source, not consistent with the position of the supernova. The former source is detected in the following NFI pointings and exhibits a decline of a factor of two in six months. If it is associated with SN 1998bw, this is the first detection of X-ray emission from a Type I supernova above 2 keV. The latter source exhibits only marginally significant variability. The X-ray spectra and variability of the supernova are compared with thermal and non-thermal models of supernova high energy emission. Based on the BeppoSAX data, it is not possible to firmly establish which of the two detected sources is the GRB X-ray counterpart, although probability considerations favor the supernova., Comment: 16 pages, Latex, 6 PostScript figures and 1 GIF figure, 2 tables, submitted to The Astrophysical Journal

Four or five new outbursts were detected of the bright X-ray transient GRS 1747-312 in the globular cluster Terzan 6 between 1996 and 1999, through monitoring campaigns with the Wide Field Cameras (WFCs) on BeppoSAX and the Proportional Counter Array (PCA) on RossiXTE. This is the first time that the source is seen to exhibit recurrent outbursts after the discovery in September 1990 with ART-P on Granat. Three target-of-opportunity observations in 1998 and 1999, with the narrow-field instruments on BeppoSAX and the PCA, revealed one sharp drop in the flux which we identify as an eclipse of the compact X-ray source by the companion star. A detailed analysis of WFC data identifies further eclipses and we measure the orbital period at 12.360+/-0.009 hr. This is consistent with an identification as a low-mass X-ray binary, as suggested already by the association with a globular cluster. The eclipse duration is 0.72+/-0.06 hr. This implies that the inclination angle is larger than 74 deg. The 0.1-200 keV unabsorbed peak luminosity is 7X10^36 erg/s. The results of a BeppoSAX TOO observation of the BL Lac object Mkn421 during a high intensity state are reported and compared with monitoring X-ray data collected with the BeppoSAX Wide Field Cameras (WFC) and the RXTE All Sky Monitor(ASM). The 0.1-100 keV spectrum of Mkn421 shows continuous convex curvature that can be interpreted as the high-energy end of the synchrotron emission. The source shows significant short-term temporal and spectral variability, which can be interpreted in terms of synchrotron cooling. The comparison of our results with those of previous observations when the source was a factor 3-5 fainter shows evidence for strong spectral variability, with the maximum of the synchrotron power shifting to higher energy during high states. For the first time X-ray bursts have been detected from a sky position consistent with the one of GRS 1741.9-2853, a GRANAT transient source located only ~10' from the Galactic Centre. A total of 3 bursts have been observed by the Wide Field Cameras telescopes on board BeppoSAX during a monitoring observation of the Sgr A region in August-September 1996. The characteristics of the events are consistent with type-I bursts, thus identifying the source as a likely low-mass X-ray binary containing a neutron star. Evidence of photospheric radius expansion due to super-Eddington luminosity is present in one of the observed bursts, thus leading to an estimate og the source distance (~8 kpc)., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. We present BeppoSAX GRBM and WFC light curves of GRB980425 and NFI follow-up data taken in 1998 April, May, and November. The first NFI observation has detected within the 8' radius error box of the GRB an X-ray source positionally consistent with the supernova SN 1998bw, exploded within a day of GRB980425, and a fainter X-ray source, not consistent with the position of the supernova. The former source is detected in the following NFI pointings and exhibits a decline of a factor of two in six months. If it is associated with SN 1998bw, this is the first detection of hard X-ray emission from a Type I supernova. The latter source exhibits only marginally significant variability. For the second time in 27 years a bright transient X-ray source has been detected coincident with the globular cluster NGC 6440. It was found to be active in August, 1998, with the Wide Field Camera and the narrow field instruments on the BeppoSAX spacecraft, and with the All-Sky Monitor and the Proportional Counter Array on the RossiXTE spacecraft. Four X-ray bursts were detected, at least one of which shows the characteristics of a thermonuclear flash on a neutron star, in analogy with some ~20 optically identified low-mass X-ray binaries. The broad-band spectrum is hard as is common among low-mass X-ray binaries of lower luminosity (>~10^37 erg/s) and can be explained by a Comptonized model. During the burst the >30 keV emission brightened, consistent with part of the burst emission being Compton up scattered within ~10^11 cm., Comment: 10 pages, accepted for publication in A&A

The transient X-ray source GS 1826-238 was monitored during five different observing periods between August 1996 and October 1998 with the BeppoSAX Wide Field Camera instrument in the framework of a deep observation of the Galactic Center region. A first detection of X-ray bursts from this source occurred, ruling out its previously suggested black hole candidacy and strongly suggesting the compact object to be a weakly magnetized neutron star. During the 2.5 years of monitoring, corresponding to ~2.0 Ms observing time, 70 bursts were detected from the source. We here report a quasi-periodicity of 5.76 h in the burst occurrence time which is present during all observations. This is the first example of quasi-periodic bursting over a period of years. It is in line with the history of a rather constant flux since the turn on in 1988 and points to a very stable accretion., Comment: 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

The observed event showed evidence of photospheric radius expansion due to super-Eddington burst luminosity. Following a series of deep observations of the Galactic Bulge region performed with the Wide Field Cameras on board BeppoSAX, it has been possible to study throughout a long time period a number of persistent X-ray sources. We report on the behaviour of GRS 1758-258, an X-ray binary suggested as a black hole candidate on the basis of its timing and spectral characteristics. We report evidence of type-I X-ray bursting activity from the transient 1RXS J170930.2-263927 when it was in outburst early 1997. This identifies the source as a probable low-mass X-ray binary containing a neutron star. The error boxes of the detected bursts and of the persistent emission, as obtained with the Wide Field Cameras on board the BeppoSAX satellite, rule out an association with the proposed radio counterpart (Hjellming & Rupen 1997)., Comment: ApJ Letters, accepted Oct 13, 1998

GRB970402 is the fourth gamma-ray burst detected by BeppoSAX simultaneously in the Gamma Ray Burst Monitor (GRBM) and one of the two Wide Field Cameras (WFCs). A rapid pointing of the BeppoSAX Narrow Field Instruments (NFIs) 8 hours after the GRB led to the identification of an unknown weak X-ray source: 1SAX J1450.1-6920. Its position was approximately at the center of the 3 arcmin error circle derived from the WFC image. Both the Medium Energy (MECS, 2-10 keV) and Low Energy (LECS, 0.1-10 keV) concentrators detected the source. A follow-up observation performed 1.5 days later and lasting 54 ks showed that the source had faded almost to, but not below the detectability threshold. The flux decrease between the two observations was a factor ~= 2.5. 1SAX J1450.1-6920 was the second X-ray afterglow associated with a GRB. The BeppoSAX satellite has recently opened a new way towards the solution of the long standing gamma-ray bursts' (GRBs) enigma, providing accurate coordinates few hours after the event thus allowing for multiwavelength follow-up observational campaigns. The BeppoSAX Narrow Field Instruments observed the region of sky containing GRB970111 16 hours after the burst. In contrast to other GRBs observed by BeppoSAX no bright afterglow was unambiguously observed. A faint source (1SAXJ1528.1+1937) is detected in a position consistent with the BeppoSAX Wide Field Camera position, but unconsistent with the IPN annulus. Whether 1SAXJ1528.1+1937 is associated with GRB970111 or not, the X-ray intensity of the afterglow is significantly lower than expected, based on the properties of the other BeppoSAX GRB afterglows. Given that GRB970111 is one of the brightest GRBs observed, this implies that there is no obvious relation between the GRB gamma-ray peak flux and the intensity of the X-ray afterglow., Comment: 5 pages, LaTeX A&A style, 3 postscript figures; A&A Letters accepted

We report the discovery with BeppoSAX-WFC of two new X-ray sources that were only seen during bursts: SAX J1753.5-2349 and SAX J1806.5-2215. For both sources, no steady emission was detected above an upper limit of 5 mCrab (2 to 8 keV) for 3 10**5 s around the burst events. The single burst detected from SAX J1753.5-2349 shows spectral softening and a black body color temperature of 2.0 keV. Following the analogy with bursts in other sources the burst very likely originates in a thermonuclear flash on a neutron star. We report the discovery of a fairly bright transient during observations with the Wide Field Cameras on board the BeppoSAX satellite in September 1996. It was detected at a peak intensity of 0.1 Crab (2 to 10 keV) and lasted between 6 and 40 days above a detection threshold of 2 mCrab. Two very bright type I X-ray bursts were detected from this transient in the same observations. These almost certainly identify this X-ray transient as a low-mass X-ray binary with a neutron star as compact component. The double-peaked time history of both bursts at high energies suggests a peak luminosity close to the Eddington limit. In about one year, five gamma-ray bursts were simultaneously observed with the Wide Field Cameras and Gamma Ray Burst Monitor aboard the BeppoSAX satellite. From some of them X-ray afterglow emission has been clearly detected with the same satellite. In order to understand how GRB emission is related to the X-ray afterglow, we are performing a systematic study of the spectral properties of these events. Two type I X-ray bursts were detected from a position consistent with the transient X-ray source in NGC 6652 with the Wide Field Camera of the BeppoSAX satellite, strongly suggesting that this transient is a neutron star. Our detection brings to ten the number of X-ray sources in globular clusters in which a type I X-ray burst has been seen, out of twelve known bright sources. The statistical evidence that the fraction of low-mass X-ray binaries which contain a black hole accretor is smaller in globular clusters than in the galactic disk is suggestive, but as yet not compelling., Comment: Published in A&A, 1998, vol. 329, L37; 5 pages, 3 figures

We report high-energy spectral data of the prompt emission of GRB970228 and its X-ray afterglow. We establish that the nature of the X-ray afterglow emission is non-thermal and similar to the later portion of GRB970228. Our data can be used to discriminate different emission models of GRB afterglows. While cooling of excited compact objects can be ruled out, fireball models are constrained in the physics of the radiation emission processes and their evolution., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

In this paper we present the observations performed by the BeppoSAX Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor (GRBM) and Wide Field Cameras (WFC) of GB960720. We derive a precise localization (3 arcmin radius) and fast broad band (2-700 keV) spectral evolution of the event. A search in the catalogues at all wavelengths in the error box yields a unique outstanding source: the bright radio quasar 4C 49.29. Although the probability of finding such a source by chance is very low (0.0002), the absence of similar counterparts in other small error boxes suggests a chance occurrence. We also find that the duration-energy relationship for bursts previously observed above 25keV (Fenimore et al. 1995) extends down to 1.5 keV. This result suggests that the same radiation mechanism is operating from X-rays to gamma-rays and is in agreement with radiative cooling by synchotron emission. A fast evolution of the spectrum is found, in which the ratio of X- to gamma-ray intensities varies over three orders of magnitude. Furthermore, the spectrum in the initial phase of the event betrays the presence of an optically thick source rapidly evolving in a thin configuration.No other class of sources in the universe shows such a fast and extreme evolution. Here we report the discovery in the X-ray band of the first afterglow of a gamma-ray burst. It was detected and quickly positioned by the Beppo-SAX satellite on 1997 February 28 (GRB970228). The X-ray afterglow source was detected with the X-ray telescopes aboard the same satellite about eight hours after the burst and faded away in a few days with a power law decay function. The energetic content of the X-ray afterglow results to be a significant fraction of gamma-ray burst energetics.
