Purpose: This paper updates the authors’ original 2005 study of Google Scholar’s integration into ARL libraries web sites. Had more ARL libraries added Google Scholar? Design/methodology/approach: The library homepages of the 113 ARL academic institutions were examined for paths or links to Google Scholar. The coding scheme focused on noting if Google Scholar appeared on the library homepage, in the OPAC, and on various database lists and subject guides. Findings: The 2007 data indicate continued acceptance of Google Scholar and integration of this resource on the web pages of ARL libraries. The mean number of paths to Google Scholar more than doubled from 2005 to 2007. Partnering institutions were more likely to include paths to Google Scholar and the number of partnering institutions dramatically increased. Practical implications: This study is useful for those making decisions about integration of Google Scholar into library collections and services, particularly the web site. Orginality/value: This paper illustrates future directions for integrating new categories of resources into the academic library web site.

The Coalition of Open Access Policy Institutions (COAPI, https://sparcopen.org/coapi ) is committed to sharing information and resources to assist in the development and implementation of institutional Open Access (OA) policies. The COAPI Toolkit includes a diverse collection of resources that COAPI members have developed in the course of their OA policy initiatives. These resources are openly accessible and published here under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licenses, unless otherwise noted on the resources themselves.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to report on the 32nd International Association of Technological University Libraries (IATUL) Conference held in Warsaw from 29 May to 2 June 2011.Design/methodology/approach – This report uses a journalistic approach based on the author's attendance at the conference.Findings – The findings, comprising recaps of sessions, will hopefully attract other librarians to consider attending future IATUL conferences, or to take some of the suggestions mentioned about “openness” in general and apply them in their own libraries.Originality/value – This report reflects originality in that all information reported is solely the opinion and reflection of the author.

Passing a university Open Access policy creates a sense of accomplishment. Often, the passage of a policy and/or resolution in any university follows a time period of outreach, education, and very hard work on the part of everyone involved in that policymaking. However, an implementation team must quickly be formed, and the real work begun in order for momentum to continue and success to be realized. New groups must be created, traditional silos broken down, and work tied to deadlines in order for the policy to “go into effect” as an active part of researchers’ workflows and mindsets. At Rutgers University, an open access resolution was passed by the University Senate in October, 2012, and was codified in the official Rutgers University Policy Library in October, 2014. All of the work that the authors coordinated to get to the point of passing the policy was only the beginning of making open access a reality at Rutgers. Since the date that the policy has passed, the authors have been leading an implementation effort (using an established timeline) which includes a new web portal for scholarship, as well as developing materials and presentations for various open access policy-focused education and outreach efforts. An added challenge to the Rutgers implementation is that the policy is inclusive of graduate students. This gives Rutgers, the first and only university in the world at this point to include its graduate students (doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars) alongside faculty under its university-wide open access policy, an added opportunity and responsibility to create programs and workflows for this important group of early career researchers. Many institutions have voted to pass open access policies. It has often been stated that a “faculty champion” needs to be identified in order for any policy to move successfully through various university stakeholder groups. Librarians have been warned not to make open access a “library issue.” At the same time, academic librarians already possess demonstrated expertise in repository development, have established liaison relationships with departmental faculty, and are most likely to have deep knowledge of scholarly communication and publishing trends. Librarians can leverage this expertise and experience by taking on open access leadership roles in the wider institution. Academic librarians can become true change agents in the transformation of institutional scholarly communication practices. Researchers are extremely interested in increasing the impact of their individual scholarly work, and may turn to academic librarians for advice and assistance. Academic librarians may find new roles as consultants to authors in methods of self-archiving and citation analysis. Librarians can be proactive in this new role by disseminating current information on all citation analysis tools and metrics, as well as by offering strategies to increase Web visibility of scholarship to interested faculty. Potential authors of journal articles, especially those faculty seeking greater research impact, such as those seeking promotion and tenure, will find practical suggestions from librarians invaluable. Citation analysis tools continue to improve in their coverage of social and behavioral science fields, and emerging metrics allow more flexibility in demonstrating impact of published journal articles.

At Rutgers University Libraries, the Outpost Services Team was created by the New Brunswick Libraries’ Information Services Steering Group to study the demand for services at locations outside of the physical library buildings. Upon the recommendation of the group, the team planned an exploratory pilot study to investigate the need for library services at campus centers - places where students and faculty members regularly gather for eating, socializing and using other available services. A part of the main information desk of Rutgers University’s Busch Campus Center was used to set up the outpost. Traditional reference desk type of service was offered using networked digital resources. Reference statistics and feedback surveys were collected that provided data for evaluation. The pilot study was a unique endeavor to reach out to less frequent users of libraries, learn about the expectations of students and faculty, and communicate to them about how they can benefit from using library resources and services. This article presents the details of planning the pilot study, a summary of findings and conclusions.

The author reflects on the importance of the continued improvement of the relationship between librarians and publishers. She cites open access publishing as a possible catalyst for publishers to reconsider their relationships with authors and librarians. She mentions the benefit of the participation of publishers and librarians in the 30th anniversary meeting of the Society for Scholarly Publishing in May 2008. She points out the increasing collaboration in the use of library advisory boards and librarian focus groups by publishers.
