This paper presents a newly established sample of 103 unique galaxies or galaxy groups at $0.4\lesssim z\lesssim 0.7$ from the Cosmic Ultraviolet Baryon Survey (CUBS) for studying the warm-hot circumgalactic medium (CGM) probed by both O VI and Ne VIII absorption. The galaxies and associated neighbors are identified at $< 1$ physical Mpc from the sightlines toward 15 CUBS QSOs at $z_{\rm QSO}\gtrsim 0.8$. A total of 30 galaxies or galaxy groups exhibit associated O VI $\lambda\lambda$ 1031, 1037 doublet absorption within a line-of-sight velocity interval of $\pm250$ km/s, while the rest show no trace of O VI to a detection limit of $\log N_{\rm OVI}/{\rm cm^{-2}}\approx13.7$. Meanwhile, only five galaxies or galaxy groups exhibit the Ne VIII $\lambda\lambda$ 770,780 doublet absorption, down to a limiting column density of $\log N_{\rm NeVIII}/{\rm cm^{-2}}\approx14.0$. These O VI- and Ne VIII-bearing halos reside in different galaxy environments with stellar masses ranging from $\log M_{\rm star}/M_\odot \approx 8$ to $\approx11.5$. The warm-hot CGM around galaxies of different stellar masses and star formation rates exhibits different spatial profiles and kinematics. In particular, star-forming galaxies with $\log M_{\rm star}/M_\odot\approx9-11$ show a significant concentration of metal-enriched warm-hot CGM within the virial radius, while massive quiescent galaxies exhibit flatter radial profiles of both column densities and covering fractions. In addition, the velocity dispersion of O VI absorption is broad with $\sigma_v > 40$ km/s for galaxies of $\log M_{\rm star}/M_\odot>9$ within the virial radius, suggesting a more dynamic warm-hot halo around these galaxies. Finally, the warm-hot CGM probed by O VI and Ne VIII is suggested to be the dominant phase in sub-$L^*$ galaxies with $\log M_{\rm star}/M_\odot\approx9-10$ based on their high ionization fractions in the CGM., Comment: Submitted to ApJ after addressing the referee's comments; 28 pages, 16 figures

We present an analysis of 10 ks snapshot Chandra observations of 12 shocked post-starburst galaxies, which provide a window into the unresolved question of active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity in post-starburst galaxies and its role in the transition of galaxies from actively star forming to quiescence. While 7/12 galaxies have statistically significant detections (with 2 more marginal detections), the brightest only obtained 10 photons. Given the wide variety of hardness ratios in this sample, we chose to pursue a forward modeling approach to constrain the intrinsic luminosity and obscuration of these galaxies rather than stacking. We constrain intrinsic luminosity of obscured power-laws based on the total number of counts and spectral shape, itself mostly set by the obscuration, with hardness ratios consistent with the data. We also tested thermal models. While all the galaxies have power-law models consistent with their observations, a third of the galaxies are better fit as an obscured power-law and another third are better fit as thermal emission. If these post-starburst galaxies, early in their transition, contain AGN, then these are mostly confined to a lower obscuration ($n_H \leq10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$) and lower luminosity ($L_{2-10~ \rm keV}\leq10^{42}$erg s$^{-1}$). Two galaxies, however, are clearly best fit as significantly obscured AGN. At least half of this sample show evidence of at least low luminosity AGN activity, though none could radiatively drive out the remaining molecular gas reservoirs. Galaxy protoclusters, which will eventually grow into the massive clusters we see in the local universe, are usually traced by locating overdensities of galaxies. Large spectroscopic surveys of distant galaxies now exist, but their sensitivity depends mainly on a galaxy's star formation activity and dust content rather than its mass. Tracers of massive protoclusters that do not rely on their galaxy constituents are therefore needed. Here we report observations of Lyman-$\alpha$ absorption in the spectra of a dense grid of background galaxies, which we use to locate a substantial number of candidate protoclusters at redshifts 2.2-2.8 via their intergalactic gas. We find that the structures producing the most absorption, most of which were previously unknown, contain surprisingly few galaxies compared to the dark matter content of their analogs in cosmological simulations. Nearly all are expected to be protoclusters, and we infer that half of their expected galaxy members are missing from our survey because they are unusually dim at rest-frame ultraviolet wavelengths. We attribute this to an unexpectedly strong and early influence of the protocluster environment on the evolution of these galaxies that reduced their star formation or increased their dust content., Comment: Published in Nature. We present a detailed study of two partial Lyman limit systems (pLLSs) of neutral hydrogen column density $N_\mathrm{H\,I}\approx(1-3)\times10^{16}\,\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$ discovered at $z=0.5$ in the Cosmic Ultraviolet Baryon Survey (CUBS). Available far-ultraviolet spectra from the Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph and optical echelle spectra from MIKE on the Magellan Telescopes enable a comprehensive ionization analysis of diffuse circumgalactic gas based on resolved kinematics and abundance ratios of atomic species spanning five different ionization stages. These data provide unambiguous evidence of kinematically aligned multi-phase gas that masquerades as a single-phase structure and can only be resolved by simultaneous accounting of the full range of observed ionic species. Both systems are resolved into multiple components with inferred $\alpha$-element abundance varying from $[\alpha/\text{H}]\approx\!{-0.8}$ to near solar and densities spanning over two decades from $\log n_\mathrm{H}\mathrm{cm}^{-3}\approx\!-2.2$ to $<-4.3$. Available deep galaxy survey data from the CUBS program taken with VLT/MUSE, Magellan/LDSS3-C and Magellan/IMACS reveal that the $z=0.47$ system is located 55 kpc from a star-forming galaxy with prominent Balmer absorption of stellar mass $M_\star\approx2\times10^{10}M_\odot$, while the $z=0.54$ system resides in an over-dense environment of 11 galaxies within 750 kpc in projected distance, with the most massive being a luminous red galaxy of $M_\star\approx2\times10^{11}M_\odot$ at 375 kpc. The study of these two pLLSs adds to an emerging picture of the complex, multiphase circumgalactic gas that varies in chemical abundances and density on small spatial scales in diverse galaxy environments. (Abridged) We present a systematic investigation of physical conditions and elemental abundances in four optically thick Lyman-limit systems (LLSs) at $z=0.36-0.6$ discovered within the Cosmic Ultraviolet Baryon Survey (CUBS). CUBS LLSs exhibit multi-component kinematic structure and a complex mix of multiphase gas, with associated metal transitions from multiple ionization states that span several hundred km/s in line-of-sight velocity. Specifically, higher column density components (log N(HI)>16) in all four absorbers comprise dynamically cool gas with $\langle T \rangle =(2\pm1) \times10^4\,$K and modest non-thermal broadening of $5\pm3\,$ km/s. The high quality of the QSO absorption spectra allows us to infer the physical conditions of the gas, using a detailed ionization modeling that takes into account the resolved component structures of HI and metal transitions. The range of inferred gas densities indicates that these absorbers consist of spatially compact clouds with a median line-of-sight thickness of $160^{+140}_{-50}$ pc. While obtaining robust metallicity constraints for the low-density, highly ionized phase remains challenging due to the uncertain N(HI), we demonstrate that the cool-phase gas in LLSs has a median metallicity of $\mathrm{[\alpha/H]_{1/2}}=-0.7^{+0.1}_{-0.2}$, with a 16-84 percentile range of $\mathrm{[\alpha/H]}=(-1.3,-0.1)$. Furthermore, the wide range of inferred elemental abundance ratios ($\mathrm{[C/\alpha]}$, $\mathrm{[N/\alpha]}$, and $\mathrm{[Fe/\alpha]}$) indicate a diversity of chemical enrichment histories. Combining the absorption data with deep galaxy survey data characterizing the galaxy environment of these absorbers, we discuss the physical connection between star-forming regions in galaxies and diffuse gas associated with optically thick absorption systems in the $z<1$ circumgalactic medium., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS after a minor revision. 18 pages, 11 figures, and a nine-page Appendix with four additional figures

We report the serendipitous detection of an H$_{2}$-bearing damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorber at z = 0.576 in the spectrum of the QSO J0111-0316 in the Cosmic Ultraviolet Baryon Survey. Spectroscopic observations from HST-COS in the far-ultraviolet reveal a damped absorber with log[N(HI)/cm^-2] = 20.1 +/- 0.2 and log[N(H$_{2}$)/cm^-2] = 18.97 (-0.06, +0.05). The diffuse molecular gas is found in two velocity components separated by dv = 60 km/s, with >99.9% of the total H$_{2}$ column density concentrated in one component. At a metallicity of $\approx$ 50% of solar, there is evidence for Fe enhancement and dust depletion, with a dust-to-gas ratio $\kappa_{\text{O}} \approx$ 0.4. A galaxy redshift survey conducted with IMACS and LDSS-3C on Magellan reveals an overdensity of nine galaxies at projected distance d <= 600 proper kpc (pkpc) and line-of-sight velocity offset dv$_{g}$ <= 300 km/s from the absorber. The closest is a massive, early-type galaxy at d = 41 pkpc which contains $\approx$ 70% of the total stellar mass identified at d <= 310 pkpc of the H$_{2}$ absorber. The close proximity of the H$_{2}$-bearing gas to the quiescent galaxy and the Fe-enhanced chemical abundance pattern of the absorber suggest a physical connection, in contrast to a picture in which DLAs are primarily associated with gas-rich dwarfs. This case study illustrates that deep galaxy redshift surveys are needed to gain insight into the diverse environments that host dense and potentially star-forming gas., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures. We present initial results from the Cosmic Ultraviolet Baryon Survey (CUBS). CUBS is designed to map diffuse baryonic structures at redshift z<~1 using absorption-line spectroscopy of 15 UV-bright QSOs with matching deep galaxy survey data. CUBS QSOs are selected based on their NUV brightness to avoid biases against the presence of intervening Lyman Limit Systems (LLSs) at zabs<1. We report five new LLSs of log N(HI)/cm^-2 >~ 17.2 over a total redshift survey pathlength of dz=9.3, and a number density of n(z)=0.43 (-0.18, +0.26). Considering all absorbers with log N(HI)/cm^-2 > 16.5 leads to n(z)=1.08 (-0.25, +0.31) at z<1. All LLSs exhibit a multi-component structure and associated metal transitions from multiple ionization states such as CII, CIII, MgII, SiII, SiIII, and OVI absorption. Differential chemical enrichment levels as well as ionization states are directly observed across individual components in three LLSs. We present deep galaxy survey data obtained using the VLT-MUSE integral field spectrograph and the Magellan Telescopes, reaching sensitivities necessary for detecting galaxies fainter than 0.1L* at d<~300 physical kpc (pkpc) in all five fields. A diverse range of galaxy properties is seen around these LLSs, from a low-mass dwarf galaxy pair, a co-rotating gaseous halo/disk, a star-forming galaxy, a massive quiescent galaxy, to a galaxy group. The closest galaxies have projected distances ranging from d=15 to 72 pkpc and intrinsic luminosities from ~0.01L* to ~3L*. We introduce LATIS, the Ly$\alpha$ Tomography IMACS Survey, a spectroscopic survey at Magellan designed to map the z=2.2-2.8 intergalactic medium (IGM) in three dimensions by observing the Ly$\alpha$ forest in the spectra of galaxies and QSOs. Within an area of 1.7 deg${}^2$, we will observe approximately half of $\gtrsim L^*$ galaxies at z=2.2-3.2 for typically 12 hours, providing a dense network of sightlines piercing the IGM with an average transverse separation of 2.5 $h^{-1}$ comoving Mpc (1 physical Mpc). At these scales, the opacity of the IGM is expected to be closely related to the dark matter density, and LATIS will therefore map the density field in the $z \sim 2.5$ universe at $\sim$Mpc resolution over the largest volume to date. Ultimately LATIS will produce approximately 3800 spectra of z=2.2-3.2 galaxies that probe the IGM within a volume of $4 \times 10^6 h^{-3}$ Mpc${}^3$, large enough to contain a representative sample of structures from protoclusters to large voids. Observations are already complete over one-third of the survey area. In this paper, we describe the survey design and execution. We present the largest IGM tomographic maps at comparable resolution yet made. We show that the recovered matter overdensities are broadly consistent with cosmological expectations based on realistic mock surveys, that they correspond to galaxy overdensities, and that we can recover structures identified using other tracers. LATIS is conducted in Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey fields, including COSMOS. Coupling the LATIS tomographic maps with the rich data sets collected in these fields will enable novel studies of environment-dependent galaxy evolution and the galaxy-IGM connection at cosmic noon., Comment: accepted to ApJ; Fig. 26 contains animated rendering of the IGM maps

We constrain the evolution of the brightest cluster galaxy plus intracluster light (BCG+ICL) using an ensemble of 42 galaxy groups and clusters that span redshifts of z = 0.05-1.75 and masses of $M_{500,c}=2\times10^{13}-10^{15}$ M$_\odot$ Specifically, we measure the relationship between the BCG+ICL stellar mass $M_\star$ and $M_{500,c}$ at projected radii 10 < r < 100 kpc for three different epochs. At intermediate redshift (z = 0.40), where we have the best data, we find $M_\star\propto M_{500,c}^{0.48\pm0.06}$. Fixing the exponent of this power law for all redshifts, we constrain the normalization of this relation to be $2.08\pm0.21$ times higher at z = 0.40 than at high redshift (z = 1.55). We find no change in the relation from intermediate to low redshift (z = 0.10). In other words, for fixed $M_{500,c}$, $M_\star$ at 10 < r < 100 kpc increases from z = 1.55 to z = 0.40 and not significantly thereafter. Theoretical models predict that the physical mass growth of the cluster from z = 1.5 to z = 0 within $r_{500,c}$ is a factor of 1.4, excluding evolution due to definition of $r_{500,c}$. We find that $M_\star$ within the central 100 kpc increases by a factor of 3.8 over the same period. Thus, the growth of $M_\star$ in this central region is more than a factor of two greater than the physical mass growth of the cluster as a whole. Furthermore, the concentration of the BCG+ICL stellar mass, defined by the ratio of stellar mass within 10 kpc to the total stellar mass within 100 kpc, decreases with increasing $M_{500,c}$ at all redshift. We interpret this result as evidence for inside-out growth of the BCG+ICL over the past ten Gyrs, with stellar mass assembly occuring at larger radii at later times., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS, 9 pages, 6 figures

The relationship between galaxies and the state/chemical enrichment of the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) expected to dominate the baryon budget at low-z provides sensitive constraints on structure formation and galaxy evolution models. We present a deep redshift survey in the field of 1ES1553+113, a blazar with a unique combination of UV+X-ray spectra for surveys of the circum-/intergalactic medium (CGM/IGM). Nicastro et al. 2018 reported the detection of two O VII WHIM absorbers at $z=0.4339$ and $0.3551$ in its spectrum, suggesting that the WHIM is metal-rich and sufficient to close the missing baryons problem. Our survey indicates that the blazar is a member of a $z=0.433$ group and that the higher-$z$ O VII candidate arises from its intragroup medium. The resulting bias precludes its use in baryon censuses. The $z=0.3551$ candidate occurs in an isolated environment 630 kpc from the nearest galaxy (with stellar mass $\log M_*/M_\odot \approx 9.7$) which we show is unexpected for the WHIM. Finally, we characterize the galactic environments of broad H I Ly$\alpha$ absorbers (Doppler widths of $b=40-80$ \kms; $T\lesssim4\times10^5$ K) which provide metallicity independent WHIM probes. On average, broad Ly$\alpha$, absorbers are ${\approx}2\times$ closer to the nearest luminous ($L>0.25 L_*$) galaxy (700 kpc) than narrow ($b<30$ \kms; $T\lesssim4\times10^5$ K) ones (1300 kpc) but ${\approx}2\times$ further than O\,VI absorbers (350 kpc). In the local universe, a large fraction of the baryon content is believed to exist as diffuse gas in filaments. While this gas is directly observable in X-ray emission around clusters of galaxies, it is primarily studied through its UV absorption. Recently, X-ray observations of large-scale filaments connecting to the cosmic web around the nearby ($z=0.05584$) cluster Abell 133 were reported. One of these filaments is intersected by the sightline to quasar [VV98] J010250.2$-$220929, allowing for a first-ever census of cold, cool, and warm gas in a filament of the cosmic web where hot gas has been seen in X-ray emission. Here, we present UV observations with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph and optical observations with the Magellan Echellette spectrograph of [VV98] J010250.2$-$220929. We find no evidence of cold, cool, or warm gas associated with the filament. In particular, we set a $2\sigma$ upper limit on Ly$\alpha$ absorption of $\log(N_{HI} / \textrm{cm}^{-2}) < 13.7$, assuming a Doppler parameter of $b=20\,\textrm{km}\,\textrm{s}^{-1}$. As this sightline is ${\sim}1100\,\textrm{pkpc}$ ($0.7R_\textrm{vir}$) from the center of Abell 133, we suggest that all gas in the filament is hot at this location, or that any warm, cool, or cold components are small and clumpy. Despite significant progress both observationally and theoretically, the origin of high-ionization nebular HeII emission in galaxies dominated by stellar photoionization remains unclear. Accretion-powered radiation from high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) is still one of the leading proposed explanations for the missing $\mathrm{He^+}$-ionizing photons, but this scenario has yet to be conclusively tested. In this paper, we present nebular line predictions from a grid of photoionization models with input SEDs containing the joint contribution of both stellar atmospheres and a multi-color disk model for HMXBs. This grid demonstrates that HMXBs are inefficient producers of the photons necessary to power HeII, and can only boost this line substantially in galaxies with HMXB populations large enough to power X-ray luminosities of $10^{42}$ erg/s per unit star formation rate (SFR). To test this, we assemble a sample of eleven low-redshift star-forming galaxies with high-quality constraints on both X-ray emission from Chandra and HeII emission from deep optical spectra, including new observations with the MMT. These data reveal that the HMXB populations of these nearby systems are insufficient to account for the observed HeII strengths, with typical X-ray luminosities or upper limits thereon of only $10^{40}$-$10^{41}$ erg/s per SFR. This indicates that HMXBs are not the dominant source of $\mathrm{He^+}$ ionization in these metal-poor star-forming galaxies. We suggest that the solution may instead reside in revisions to stellar wind predictions, softer X-ray sources, or very hot products of binary evolution at low metallicity., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, published in MNRAS

Quasars at early redshifts ($z > 6$) with companion galaxies offer unique insights into the growth and evolution of the first supermassive black holes. Here, we report on a 150 ks Chandra observation of PSO J308.0416$-$21.2339, a $z=6.23$ quasar with a merging companion galaxy identified in [C II] and rest-frame UV emission. With $72.3^{+9.6}_{-8.6}$ net counts, we find that PSO J308.0416$-$21.2339 is powerful ($L_X = 2.31^{+1.14}_{-0.76} \times 10^{45}\ \textrm{erg}\,\textrm{s}^{-1}\,\textrm{cm}^{-2}$ in rest-frame $2.0-10.0$ keV) yet soft (spectral power-law index $\Gamma=2.39^{+0.37}_{-0.36}$ and optical-to-X-ray slope $\alpha_{\rm OX} = -1.41 \pm 0.11$). In addition, we detect three hard-energy photons $2.''0$ to the west of the main quasar, cospatial with the brightest UV emission of the merging companion. As no soft-energy photons are detected in the same area, this is potentially indicative of a highly-obscured source. With conservative assumptions, and accounting for both background fluctuations and the extended wings of the quasar's emission, these photons only have a probability $P=0.021$ of happening by chance. If confirmed by deeper observations, this system is the first high redshift quasar and companion individually detected in X-rays and is likely a dual AGN., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, published in the Astrophysical Journal. A key obstacle to developing a satisfying theory of galaxy evolution is the difficulty in extending analytic descriptions of early structure formation into full nonlinearity, the regime in which galaxy growth occurs. Extant techniques, though powerful, are based on approximate numerical methods whose Monte Carlo-like nature hinders intuition building. Here, we develop a new solution to this problem and its empirical validation. We first derive closed-form analytic expectations for the evolution of fixed percentiles in the real-space cosmic density distribution, {\it averaged over representative volumes observers can track cross-sectionally\}. Using the Lagrangian forms of the fluid equations, we show that percentiles in $\delta$---the density relative to the median---should grow as $\delta(t)\propto\delta_{0}^{\alpha}\,t^{\beta}$, where $\alpha\equiv2$ and $\beta\equiv2$ for Newtonian gravity at epochs after the overdensities transitioned to nonlinear growth. We then use 9.5 sq. deg. of Carnegie-Spitzer-IMACS Redshift Survey data to map {\it galaxy\} environmental densities over $0.2

This paper reports the discovery of spatially-extended line-emitting nebula, reaching to ~100 physical kpc (pkpc) from a damped Ly{\alpha} absorber (DLA) at z_DLA=0.313 along the sightline toward QSO PKS1127-145 (z_QSO=1.188). This DLA was known to be associated with a galaxy group of dynamical mass M_group ~3e12 M_sun, but its physical origin remained ambiguous. New wide-field integral field observations revealed a giant nebula detected in [OII], H{\beta}, [OIII], H{\alpha}, and [NII] emission, with the line-emitting gas following closely the motions of group galaxies. One of the denser streams passes directly in front of the QSO with kinematics consistent with the absorption profiles recorded in the QSO echelle spectra. The emission morphology, kinematics, and line ratios of the nebula suggest that shocks and turbulent mixing layers, produced as a result of stripped gaseous streams moving at supersonic speed across the ambient hot medium, contribute significantly to the ionization of the gas. While the DLA may not be associated with any specific detected member of the group, both the kinematic and dust properties are consistent with the DLA originating in streams of gas stripped from sub-L* group members at <~25 pkpc from the QSO sightline. This study demonstrates that gas stripping in low-mass galaxy groups is effective in releasing metal-enriched gas from star-forming regions, producing absorption systems in QSO spectra, and that combining absorption and emission-line observations provides an exciting new opportunity for studying gas and galaxy co-evolution., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in ApJL

As an evolutionary phase of galaxies, active galactic nuclei (AGN) over a large range of redshift have been utilized for understanding cosmic evolution. In particular, the population and evolution of AGNs have been investigated through the study of the cosmic X-ray background in various fields. As one of the deep fields observed by Chandra with a total of 2.8 Msec exposures, Abell 133 is a special region to investigate AGNs, providing a testbed for probing the environmental effect on AGN trigger, since cluster environments can be different from field environments. The achieved flux limit of data at 50% completeness level of 6.95x10^(-16), 1.43x10^(-16), and 1.57x10^(-15) ergs cm^(-2) in 0.5-8, 0.5-2, and 2-8 keV. Using the wavdetect and no-source binomial probability (i.e., p<0.007), we analyze the combined \textit{Chandra} image, detecting 1617 (in 0.5-8 keV), 1324 (in 0.5-2 keV), and 1028 (in 2-8 keV), X-ray point sources in the Abell 133 region. Here, we present the X-ray point source catalogue with the source fluxes, which can be combined with multiwavelength data for future works. We find that the number count distribution of the X-ray point sources is well reproduced with a broken power-law model while the best-fit model parameters are sensitive to the fitting range of the number count distribution. Finally, we find an excess of the number density (decrease of AGN fraction) at the central region of the cluster, which reflects the effect of dense environments on AGN trigger, as similarly found in studies of other galaxy clusters., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 11 pages, 12 figures

We report the discovery of six spatially extended (10-100 kpc) line-emitting nebulae in the z=0.57 galaxy group hosting PKS0405-123, one of the most luminous quasars at z<1. The discovery is enabled by the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) and provides tantalizing evidence connecting large-scale gas streams with nuclear activity on scales of <10 proper kpc (pkpc). One of the nebulae exhibits a narrow, filamentary morphology extending over 50 pkpc toward the quasar with narrow internal velocity dispersion (50 km/s) and is not associated with any detected galaxies, consistent with a cool intragroup medium (IGrM) filament. Two of the nebulae are 10 pkpc North and South of the quasar with tidal arm like morphologies. These two nebulae, along with a continuum emitting arm extending 60 pkpc from the quasar are signatures of interactions which are expected to redistribute angular momentum in the host interstellar medium (ISM) to facilitate star formation and quasar fueling in the nucleus. The three remaining nebulae are among the largest and most luminous [O III] emitting `blobs' known (1400-2400 pkpc^2) and correspond both kinematically and morphologically with interacting galaxy pairs in the quasar host group, consistent with arising from stripped ISM rather than large-scale quasar outflows. The presence of these large- and small-scale nebulae in the vicinity of a luminous quasar bears significantly on the effect of large-scale environment on galaxy and black hole fueling, providing a natural explanation for the previously known correlation between quasar luminosity and cool circumgalactic medium (CGM)., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables. The Shocked POststarburst Galaxy Survey (SPOGS) aims to identify galaxies in the transitional phase between actively star-forming and quiescence with nebular lines that are excited from shocks rather than star formation processes. We explored the ultraviolet (UV) properties of objects with near-ultraviolet (NUV) and far-ultraviolet (FUV) photometry from archival GALEX data; 444 objects were detected in both bands, 365 in only NUV, and 24 in only FUV, for a total of 833 observed objects. We compared SPOGs to samples of Star-forming galaxies (SFs), Quiescent galaxies (Qs), classical E+A post-starburst galaxies, active galactic nuclei (AGN) host galaxies, and interacting galaxies. We found that SPOGs have a larger range in their FUV-NUV and NUV-r colors compared to most of the other samples, although all of our comparison samples occupied color space inside of the SPOGs region. Based on their UV colors, SPOGs are a heterogeneous group, possibly made up of a mixture of SFs, Qs, and/or AGN. Using Gaussian mixture models, we are able to recreate the distribution of FUV-NUV colors of SPOGs and E+A galaxies with different combinations of SFs, Qs, and AGN. We find that the UV colors of SPOGs require a >60% contribution from SFs, with either Qs or AGN representing the remaining contribution, while UV colors of E+A galaxies required a significantly lower fraction of SFs, supporting the idea that SPOGs are at an earlier point in their transition from quiescent to star-forming than E+A galaxies.

With Hubble Space Telescope imaging, we investigate the progenitor population and formation mechanisms of the intracluster light (ICL) for 23 galaxy groups and clusters ranging from 3$\times10^{13}<$M$_{500,c}$ [M$_\odot$]$<9\times10^{14}$ at 0.29$<$z$<$0.89. The color gradients of the BCG+ICL become bluer with increasing radius out to 53-100 kpc for all but one system, suggesting that violent relaxation after major mergers with the BCG cannot be the dominant source of ICL. For clusters the BCG+ICL luminosity at r$<$100 kpc (0.08-0.13 r$_{500,c}$) is 1.2-3.5$\times 10^{12}$L$_\odot$; for the groups, BCG+ICL luminosities within 100 kpc (0.17-0.23 r$_{500,c}$) range between 0.7-1.3$\times 10^{12}$ L$_\odot$. The BCG+ICL stellar mass in the inner 100 kpc increases with total cluster mass as M$_\bigstar\propto$M$_{500,c}$$^{0.37\pm0.05}$. This steep slope implies that the BCG+ICL is a higher fraction of the total mass in groups than in clusters. The BCG+ICL luminosities and stellar masses are too large for the ICL stars to come from the dissolution of dwarf galaxies alone, implying instead that the ICL grows from the stripping of more massive galaxies. Using the colors of cluster members from the CLASH sample, we place conservative lower limits on the luminosities of galaxies from which the ICL could originate. We find that at 10 kpc the ICL has a color similar to massive, passive cluster galaxies ($>10^{11.6}$ M$_\odot$), while by 100 kpc this colour is equivalent to that of a 10$^{10}$ M$_\odot$ galaxy. Additionally, we find 75% of the total BCG+ICL luminosity is consistent in color of galaxies with L$>$0.2 L$_*$ (log(M$_\bigstar$[M$_\odot$])$>$10.4), assuming conservatively that these galaxies are completely disrupted. We conclude that tidal stripping of massive galaxies is the likely source of the intracluster light from 10-100 kpc (0.008-0.23 r$_{500,c}$) for galaxy groups and clusters., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Supernova driven winds are often invoked to remove chemically enriched gas from dwarf galaxies to match their low observed metallicities. In such shallow potential wells, outflows may produce massive amounts of enriched halo gas (circum-galactic medium or CGM) and pollute the intergalactic medium (IGM). Here, we present a survey of the CGM and IGM around 18 star-forming field dwarfs with stellar masses of $\log\,M_*/M_\odot\approx8-9$ at $z\approx0.2$. Eight of these have CGM probed by quasar absorption spectra at projected distances, $d$, less than the host virial radius, $R_{\rm h}$. Ten are probed in the surrounding IGM at $d/R_{\rm h}=1-3$. The absorption measurements include neutral hydrogen, the dominant silicon ions for diffuse cool gas ($T\sim10^4$ K; Si II, Si III, and Si IV), moderately ionized carbon (C IV), and highly ionized oxygen (O VI). Metal absorption from the CGM of the dwarfs is less common and $\approx4\times$ weaker compared to massive star-forming galaxies though O VI absorption is still common. None of the dwarfs probed at $d/R_{\rm h}=1-3$ have definitive metal-line detections. Combining the available silicon ions, we estimate that the cool CGM of the dwarfs accounts for only $2-6\%$ of the expected silicon budget from the yields of supernovae associated with past star-formation. The highly ionized O VI accounts for $\approx8\%$ of the oxygen budget. As O VI traces an ion with expected equilibrium ion fractions of $\lesssim 0.2$, the highly ionized CGM may represent a significant metal reservoir even for dwarfs not expected to maintain gravitationally shock heated hot halos., Comment: Accepted to ApJL, 10 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables. Gas metallicity is a key quantity used to determine the physical conditions of gaseous clouds in a wide range of astronomical environments, including interstellar and intergalactic space. In particular, considerable effort in circumgalactic medium (CGM) studies focuses on metallicity measurements, because gas metallicity serves as a critical discriminator for whether the observed heavy ions in the CGM originate in chemically-enriched outflows or in more chemically-pristine gas accreted from the intergalactic medium. However, because the gas is ionized, a necessary first step in determining CGM metallicity is to constrain the ionization state of the gas which, in addition to gas density, depends on the ultraviolet background radiation field (UVB). While it is generally acknowledged that both the intensity and spectral slope of the UVB are uncertain, the impact of an uncertain spectral slope has not been properly addressed in the literature. This Letter shows that adopting a different spectral slope can result in an order of magnitude difference in the inferred CGM metallicity. Specifically, a harder UVB spectrum leads to a higher estimated gas metallicity for a given set of observed ionic column densities . Therefore, such systematic uncertainties must be folded into the error budget for metallicity estimates of ionized gas. An initial study shows that empirical diagnostics are available for discriminating between hard and soft ionizing spectra. We perform a comprehensive study of X-ray cavities using a large sample of X-ray targets selected from the Chandra archive. The sample is selected to cover a large dynamic range including galaxy clusters, groups, and individual galaxies. Using $\beta$-modeling and unsharp masking techniques, we investigate the presence of X-ray cavities for 133 targets that have sufficient X-ray photons for analysis. We detect 148 X-ray cavities from 69 targets and measure their properties, including cavity size, angle, and distance from the center of the diffuse X-ray gas. We confirm the strong correlation between cavity size and distance from the X-ray center similar to previous studies (i.e., Birzan et al. 2004; Diehl et al. 2008; Dong et al. 2010). We find that the detection rates of X-ray cavities are similar among galaxy clusters, groups and individual galaxies, suggesting that the formation mechanism of X-ray cavities is independent of environment., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures, Accepted to ApJS

We present coarse but robust star formation histories (SFHs) derived from spectro-photometric data of the Carnegie-Spitzer-IMACS Survey, for 22,494 galaxies at 0.3

We present a compilation of UBV RIz light curves of 51 type II supernovae discovered during the course of four different surveys during 1986 to 2003: the Cerro Tololo Supernova Survey, the Calan/Tololo Supernova Program (C&T), the Supernova Optical and Infrared Survey (SOIRS), and the Carnegie Type II Supernova Survey (CATS). The photometry is based on template-subtracted images to eliminate any potential host galaxy light contamination, and calibrated from foreground stars. This work presents these photometric data, studies the color evolution using different bands, and explores the relation between the magnitude at maximum brightness and the brightness decline parameter (s) from maximum light through the end of the recombination phase. This parameter is found to be shallower for redder bands and appears to have the best correlation in the B band. We present an analysis of galaxies in groups and clusters at $0.810^{10.3}M_\odot$, we find $f_{\rm convert}\sim 0.4$ in the groups and $\sim 0.6$ in the clusters, similar to comparable measurements at $z=0$. This means the time between first accretion into a more massive halo and final star formation quenching is $t_p\sim 2$ Gyr. This is substantially longer than the estimated time required for a galaxy's star formation rate to become zero once it starts to decline, suggesting there is a long delay time during which little differential evolution occurs. In contrast with local observations we find evidence that this delay timescale may depend on stellar mass, with $t_p$ approaching $t_{\rm Hubble}$ for $M_{\rm star}\sim 10^{9.5}M_\odot$. The result suggests that the delay time must not only be much shorter than it is today, but may also depend on stellar mass in a way that is not consistent with a simple evolution in proportion to the dynamical time. Instead, we find the data are well-matched by a model in which the decline in star formation is due to "overconsumption", the exhaustion of a gas reservoir through star formation and expulsion via modest outflows in the absence of cosmological accretion. Previous observations of quasar host halos at z=2 have uncovered large quantities of cool gas that exceed what is found around inactive galaxies of both lower and higher masses. To better understand the source of this excess cool gas, we compiled an exhaustive sample of 195 quasars at z=1 with constraints on chemically enriched, cool gas traced by MgII absorption in background quasar spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. This quasar sample spans a broad range of luminosities from Lbol=10^44.4 to 10^46.8 erg/s and allows an investigation of whether halo gas properties are connected with quasar properties. We find a strong correlation between luminosity and cool gas covering fraction. In particular, low-luminosity quasars exhibit a mean gas covering fraction comparable to inactive galaxies of similar masses, but more luminous quasars exhibit excess cool gas approaching what is reported previously at z=2. Moreover, 30-40% of the MgII absorption occurs at radial velocities of |v|>300 km/s from the quasar, inconsistent with gas bound to a typical quasar host halo. The large velocity offsets and observed luminosity dependence of the cool gas near quasars can be explained if the gas arises from: (1) neighboring halos correlated through large-scale structure at Mpc scales, (2) feedback from luminous quasars, or (3) debris from the mergers thought to trigger luminous quasars. The first of these scenarios is in tension with the lack of correlation between quasar luminosity and clustering while the latter two make distinct predictions that can be tested with additional observations., Comment: 15 pages with 6 figures. We present a study of extended galaxy halo gas through HI and OVI absorption over two decades in projected distance at $z\approx0.2$. The study is based on a sample of $95$ galaxies from a highly complete ($ > 80\%$) survey of faint galaxies ($L > 0.1L_*$) with archival quasar absorption spectra and $53$ galaxies from the literature. A clear anti-correlation is found between HI (OVI) column density and virial radius normalized projected distance, $d/R_{\rm h}$. Strong HI (OVI) absorption systems with column densities greater than $10^{14.0}$ ($10^{13.5}$) cm$^{-2}$ are found for $48$ of $54$ ($36$ of $42$) galaxies at $d < \,R_{\rm h}$ indicating a mean covering fraction of $\langle\kappa_{\rm HI}\rangle=0.89$ ($\langle\kappa_{\rm OVI}\rangle=0.86$). OVI absorbers are found at $d\approx R_{\rm h}$, beyond the extent observed for lower ionization species. At $d/R_{\rm h}=1-3$ strong HI (OVI) absorption systems are found for only $7$ of $43$ ($5$ of $34$) galaxies ($\langle\kappa_{\rm HI}\rangle=0.16$ and $\langle\kappa_{\rm OVI}\rangle=0.15$). Beyond $d=3\,R_{\rm h}$, the HI and OVI covering fractions decrease to levels consistent with coincidental systems. The high completeness of the galaxy survey enables an investigation of environmental dependence of extended gas properties. Galaxies with nearby neighbors exhibit a modest increase in OVI covering fraction at $d>R_{\rm h}$ compared to isolated galaxies ($\kappa_{\rm OVI}\approx0.13$ versus $0.04$) but no excess HI absorption. These findings suggest that environmental effects play a role in distributing heavy elements beyond the enriched gaseous halos of individual galaxies. Finally, we find that differential HI and OVI absorption between early- and late-type galaxies continues from $d < R_{\rm h}$ to $d\approx3\,R_{\rm h}$., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures. Since z~1, the stellar mass density locked in low mass groups and clusters has grown by a factor of ~8. Here we make the first statistical measurements of the stellar mass content of low mass X-ray groups at 0.5

We present the data release of the Gemini-South GMOS spectroscopy in the fields of 11 galaxy groups at $0.850$ per cent complete for galaxies within the virial radius, and with stellar mass $M_{\rm star}>10^{10.3}M_\odot$. Including galaxies with photometric redshifts we have an effective sample size of $\sim 400$ galaxies within the virial radii of these groups. We present group velocity dispersions, dynamical and stellar masses. Combining with the GCLASS sample of more massive clusters at the same redshift we find the total stellar mass is strongly correlated with the dynamical mass, with $\log{M_{200}}=1.20\left(\log{M_{\rm star}}-12\right)+14.07$. This stellar fraction of $~\sim 1$ per cent is lower than predicted by some halo occupation distribution models, though the weak dependence on halo mass is in good agreement. Most groups have an easily identifiable most massive galaxy (MMG) near the centre of the galaxy distribution, and we present the spectroscopic properties and surface brightness fits to these galaxies. The total stellar mass distribution in the groups, excluding the MMG, compares well with an NFW profile with concentration $4$, for galaxies beyond $\sim 0.2R_{200}$. We use Chandra data to study the incidence and properties of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in 16 intermediate redshift ($0.5 < z < 1.1$) X-ray-selected galaxy groups in the Chandra Deep Field-South. We measure an AGN fraction of $f(L_{X,H} > 10^{42}; M_R<-20) = 8.0_{-2.3}^{+3.0}\%$ at $\bar{z} \sim 0.74$, approximately a factor of two higher than the AGN fraction found for rich clusters at comparable redshift. This extends the trend found at low redshift for groups to have higher AGN fractions than clusters. Our estimate of the AGN fraction is also more than a factor of 3 higher than that of low redshift X-ray-selected groups. Using optical spectra from various surveys, we also constrain the properties of emission-line selected AGN in these groups. Contrary to the large population of X-ray AGN ($N(L_{X,H} > 10^{41}$ erg/s) = 25), we find only 4 emission-line AGN, 3 of which are also X-ray bright. Furthermore, most of the X-ray AGN in our groups are optically-dull (i.e. lack strong emission-lines) similar to those found in low redshift X-ray groups and clusters of galaxies. This contrasts with the AGN population found in low redshift optically-selected groups which are dominated by emission-line AGN. The differences between the optically and X-ray-selected AGN populations in groups are consistent with a scenario where most AGN in the densest environments are currently in a low accretion state., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present an analysis of the diffuse X-ray emission in 19 compact groups of galaxies (CGs) observed with Chandra. The hottest, most X-ray luminous CGs agree well with the galaxy cluster X-ray scaling relations in $L_X-T$ and $L_X-\sigma$, even in CGs where the hot gas is associated with only the brightest galaxy. Using Spitzer photometry, we compute stellar masses and classify HCGs 19, 22, 40, and 42 and RSCGs 32, 44, and 86 as fossil groups using a new definition for fossil systems that includes a broader range of masses. We find that CGs with total stellar and HI masses $\gtrsim10^{11.3}$ M$_\odot$ are often X-ray luminous, while lower-mass CGs only sometimes exhibit faint, localized X-ray emission. Additionally, we compare the diffuse X-ray luminosity against both the total UV and 24 $\mu$m star formation rates of each CG and optical colors of the most massive galaxy in each of the CGs. The most X-ray luminous CGs have the lowest star formation rates, likely because there is no cold gas available for star formation, either because the majority of the baryons in these CGs are in stars or the X-ray halo, or due to gas stripping from the galaxies in CGs with hot halos. Finally, the optical colors that trace recent star formation histories of the most massive group galaxies do not correlate with the X-ray luminosities of the CGs, indicating that perhaps the current state of the X-ray halos is independent of the recent history of stellar mass assembly in the most massive galaxies., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We describe the Carnegie-Spitzer-IMACS (CSI) Survey, a wide-field, near-IR selected spectrophotometric redshift survey with IMACS on Magellan-Baade. CSI uses a flux-limited sample of galaxies in Spitzer IRAC 3.6micron imaging of SWIRE fields to efficiently trace the stellar mass of average galaxies to z~1.5. This paper provides an overview of the survey selection, observations, and processing of the photometry and spectrophotometry. We also describe the analysis of the data: new methods of fitting synthetic SEDs are used to derive redshifts, stellar masses, emission line luminosities, and coarse information on recent star-formation. Our unique methodology for analyzing low-dispersion spectra taken with multilayer prisms in IMACS, combined with panchromatic photometry from the ultraviolet to the IR, has yielded high quality redshifts for 43,347 galaxies in our first 5.3 sq. degs of the SWIRE XMM-LSS field. A new approach to assessing data quality is also described, and three different approaches are used to estimate our redshift errors, with robust agreement. Over the full range of 3.6micron fluxes of our selection, we find typical redshift uncertainties of sigma_z/(1+z) < 0.015. In comparisons with previously published spectroscopic redshifts we find scatters of sigma_z/(1+z) = 0.011 for galaxies at 0.7< z< 0.9, and sigma_z/(1+z) = 0.014 for galaxies at 0.9< z< 1.2. For galaxies brighter and fainter than i=23 mag, we find sigma_z/(1+z) = 0.008 and sigma_z/(1+z) = 0.022, respectively. Notably, our low-dispersion spectroscopy and analysis yields comparable redshift uncertainties and success rates for both red and blue galaxies, largely eliminating color-based systematics that can seriously bias observed dependencies of galaxy evolution on environment., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal; 27 pages and 25 figures. X-ray measurements suggest the abundance of Calcium in the intracluster medium is higher than can be explained using favored models for core-collapse and Type Ia supernovae alone. We investigate whether the Calcium conundrum in the intracluster medium can be alleviated by including a contribution from the recently discovered subclass of supernovae known as Calcium-rich gap transients. Although the Calcium-rich gap transients make up only a small fraction of all supernovae events, we find that their high Calcium yields are sufficient to reproduce the X-ray measurements found for nearby rich clusters. We find the $\chi^{2}$ goodness-of-fit metric improves from 84 to 2 by including this new class. Moreover, Calcium-rich supernovae preferentially occur in the outskirts of galaxies making it easier for the nucleosynthesis products of these events to be incorporated in the intracluster medium via ram-pressure stripping. The discovery of a Calcium-rich gap transients in clusters and groups far from any individual galaxy suggests supernovae associated with intracluster stars may play an important role in enriching the intracluster medium. Calcium-rich gap transients may also help explain anomalous Calcium abundances in many other astrophysical systems including individual stars in the Milky Way, the halos of nearby galaxies and the circumgalactic medium. Our work highlights the importance of considering the diversity of supernovae types and corresponding yields when modeling the abundance of the intracluster medium and other gas reservoirs.

We present new analysis from the GEEC2 spectroscopic survey of galaxy groups at $0.8

We report the discovery of a transparent sightline at projected distances of {\rho} < 20 kpc to an interacting pair of mature galaxies at z = 0.12. The sightline of the UV-bright quasar PG1522+101 at z = 1.328 passes at {\rho} = 11.5 kpc from the higher-mass galaxy (M_* = 10^10.6 M_Sun) and {\rho} = 20.4 kpc from the lower-mass one (M_* = 10^10.0 M_Sun). The two galaxies are separated by 9 kpc in projected distance and 30 km/s in line-of-sight velocity. Deep optical images reveal tidal features indicative of close interactions. Despite the small projected distances, the quasar sightline shows little absorption associated with the galaxy pair with a total HI column density it no greater than log N(HI) = 13.65. This limiting HI column density is already two orders-of-magnitude less than what is expected from previous halo gas studies. In addition, we detect no heavy-element absorption features associated with the galaxy pair with 3-{\sigma} limits of log N(MgII) < 12.2 and log N(OVI) < 13.7. The probability of seeing such little absorption in a sightline passing at a small projected distance from two non-interacting galaxies is 0.2%. The absence of strong absorbers near the close galaxy pair suggests that the cool gas reservoirs of the galaxies have been significantly depleted by the galaxy interaction. We present new absorption-line analysis and new galaxy survey data obtained for the field around PKS0405-123 at z=0.57. Combining previously known OVI absorbers with new identifications in the higher S/N UV spectra obtained with COS, we have established a sample of 7 OVI absorbers and 12 individual components at z=0.0918-0.495 along the sightline toward PKS0405-123. We complement the available UV absorption spectra with galaxy survey data that reach 100% completeness at projected distances rho<200 kpc of the quasar sightline for galaxies as faint as 0.1L* (0.2L*) out to redshifts of z=0.35 (z=0.5). The high level of completeness achieved at faint magnitudes by our survey reveals that OVI absorbers are closely associated with gas-rich environments containing at least one low-mass, emission-line galaxy. An intriguing exception is a strong OVI system at z=0.183 that does not have a galaxy found at rho<4 Mpc, and our survey rules out the presence of any galaxies of L>0.04L* at rho<250 kpc and any galaxies of L>0.3L* at rho<1 Mpc. We further examine the galactic environments of OVI absorbers and those "Lya-only" absorbers with HI column density log N(HI)>13.6 and no detectable OVI absorption features. The Lya-only absorbers serve as a control sample in seeking the discriminating galactic features that result in the observed OVI absorbing gas at large galactic radii. We find a clear distinction in the radial profiles of mean galaxy surface brightness around different absorbers. Specifically, OVI absorbers are found to reside in regions of higher mean surface brightness at rho<500 kpc (+5 mag Mpc^-2 relative to the background), while only a mild increase in galaxy surface brightness is seen at small rho around Lya-only absorbers (+2 mag Mpc^-2). We examine galaxy groups from the present epoch to z = 1 to explore the impact of group dynamics on galaxy evolution. We use group catalagues from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the Group Environment and Evolution Collaboration (GEEC) and the high redshift GEEC2 sample to study how the observed member properties depend on galaxy stellar mass, group dynamical mass and dynamical state of the host group. We find a strong correlation between the fraction of non-star-forming (quiescent) galaxies and galaxy stellar mass, but do not detect a significant difference in the quiescent fraction with group dynamical mass, within our sample halo mass range of 10^13-10^14.5 M_sun, or with dynamical sate. However, at a redshift of approximately 0.4 we do see some evidence that the quiescent fraction in low mass galaxies (log(M_star/M_sun) < 10.5) is lower in groups with substructure. Additionally, our results show that the fraction of groups with non-Gaussian velocity distributions increases with redshift to roughly z = 0.4, while the amount of detected substructure remains constant to z = 1. Based on these results, we conclude that for massive galaxies (log(M_star/M_sun_ > 10.5), evolution is most strongly correlated to the stellar mass of a galaxy with little or no additional effect related to either the group dynamical mass or dynamical state. For low mass galaxies, we do see some evidence of a correlation between the quiescent fraction and the amount of detected substructure, highlighting the need to probe further down the stellar mass function to elucidate the role of the environment in galaxy evolution., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, MNRAS accepted

A robust prediction of $\Lambda{\rm CDM}$ cosmology is the halo circular velocity function (CVF), a dynamical cousin of the halo mass function. The correspondence between theoretical and observed CVFs is uncertain, however: cluster galaxies are reported to exhibit a power-law CVF consistent with $N$-body simulations, but that of the field is distinctly Schechter-like, flattened relative to $\Lambda{\rm CDM}$ expectations at circular velocities $v_c \lesssim 200\, {\rm km\, s^{-1}}$. Groups offer a powerful probe of the role environment plays in this discrepancy as they bridge the field and clusters. Here, we construct the CVF for a large, mass- and multiplicity-complete sample of group galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Using independent photometric $v_c$ estimators, we find no transition from a field- to $\Lambda{\rm CDM}$-shaped CVF above $v_c = 50\, {\rm km\, s^{-1}}$ as a function of group halo mass. All groups with $12.4 \lesssim \log M_{\rm halo} / M_{\odot} \lesssim 15.1$ (Local Group analogs to rich clusters) display similar Schechter-like CVFs marginally suppressed at low-$v_c$ compared to that of the field. Conversely, some agreement with $N$-body results emerges for samples saturated with late-type galaxies, with isolated late-types displaying a CVF similar in shape to $\Lambda{\rm CDM}$ predictions. We conclude that the flattening of the low-$v_c$ slope in groups is due to their depressed late-type fractions -- environment affecting the CVF only to the extent that it correlates with this quantity -- and that previous cluster analyses may suffer from interloper contamination. We present deep GMOS-S spectroscopy for 11 galaxy groups at 0.866%) for eight of the eleven groups. Using an optical-NIR colour-colour diagram, the galaxies in the sample were separated with a dust insensitive method into three categories: passive (red), star-forming (blue), and intermediate (green). The strongest environmental dependence is observed in the fraction of passive galaxies, which make up only ~20 per cent of the field in the mass range 10^{10.3}

Isolated compact groups of galaxies (CGs) present a range of dynamical states, group velocity dispersions, and galaxy morphologies with which to study galaxy evolution, particularly the properties of gas both within the galaxies and in the intragroup medium. As part of a large, multiwavelength examination of CGs, we present an archival study of diffuse X-ray emission in a subset of nine Hickson compact groups observed with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We find that seven of the groups in our sample exhibit detectable diffuse emission. However, unlike large-scale emission in galaxy clusters, the diffuse features in the majority of the detected groups are linked to the individual galaxies, in the form of both plumes and halos likely as a result of star formation or AGN activity, as well as in emission from tidal features. Unlike previous studies from earlier X-ray missions, HCGs 31, 42, 59, and 92 are found to be consistent with the Lx-T relationship from clusters within the errors, while HCGs 16 and 31 are consistent with the cluster Lx-sigma relation, though this is likely coincidental given that the hot gas in these two systems is largely due to star formation. We find that Lx increases with decreasing group HI to dynamical-mass ratio with tentative evidence for a dependance in X-ray luminosity on HI morphology whereby systems with intragroup HI indicative of strong interactions are considerably more X-ray luminous than passively evolving groups. We also find a gap in the Lx of groups as a function of the total group specific star formation rate. Our findings suggest that the hot gas in these groups is not in hydrostatic equilibrium and these systems are not low-mass analogs of rich groups or clusters, with the possible exception of HCG 62., Comment: 41 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

(Abridged) We report the discovery of an X-ray group of galaxies located at a high redshift of z=1.61 in the Chandra Deep Field South. The group is first identified as an extended X-ray source. We use a wealth of deep multi-wavelength data to identify the optical counterpart -- our red sequence finder detects a significant over-density of galaxies at z~1.6 and the brightest group galaxy is spectroscopically confirmed at z=1.61. We measure an X-ray luminosity of L_{0.1-2.4 keV}= 1.8\pm0.6 \times 10^{43} erg/s, which then translates into a group mass of 3.2\pm0.8 \times 10^{13} M_sun. This is the lowest mass group ever confirmed at z>1.5. The deep optical-nearIR images from CANDELS reveal that the group exhibits a surprisingly prominent red sequence. A detailed analysis of the spectral energy distributions of the group member candidates confirms that most of them are indeed passive galaxies. Furthermore, their structural parameters measured from the near-IR CANDELS images show that they are morphologically early-type. The newly identified group at z=1.61 is dominated by quiescent early-type galaxies and the group appears similar to those in the local Universe. One possible difference is the high fraction of AGN (38^{+23}_{-20}%), which might indicate a role for AGN in quenching. But, a statistical sample of high-z groups is needed to draw a general picture of groups at this redshift. We present a detailed analysis of the galaxy and group distributions around three reported X-ray absorption line systems in the spectrum of the quasar H2356-309. Previous studies associated these absorbers with known large-scale galaxy structures (i.e., walls and filaments) along the line of sight. Such absorption lines typically trace 10^{5-7} K gas, and may be evidence of the elusive warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) thought to harbor the bulk of the low-redshift "missing baryons;" alternatively, they may be linked to individual galaxies or groups in the filaments. Here we combine existing galaxy survey data with new, multi-object Magellan spectroscopy to investigate the detailed galaxy distribution near each absorber. All of these three absorption systems are within the projected virial radii of nearby galaxies and/or groups, and could therefore arise in these virialized structures rather than (or in addition to) the WHIM. However, we find no additional galaxies near a fourth "void" absorber recently found in the spectrum, suggesting that this system may indeed trace gas unassociated with any individual halo. Though the number of known systems is still small, spatial coincidences suggest that some X-ray absorbers lie in galaxy and/or group environments, though others could still trace the large-scale filamentary WHIM gas predicted by simulations., Comment: 6 pages emulateapj, 3 figures; minor revisions following referee report. Understanding the interaction between galaxies and their surroundings is central to building a coherent picture of galaxy evolution. Here we use GALEX imaging of a statistically representative sample of 23 galaxy groups at z=0.06 to explore how local and global group environment affect the UV properties and dust-corrected star formation rates of their member galaxies. The data provide star formation rates out to beyond 2R_200 in all groups, down to a completeness limit and limiting galaxy stellar mass of 0.06 M_sun/yr and 10^8 M_sun, respectively. At fixed galaxy stellar mass, we find that the fraction of star-forming group members is suppressed relative to the field out to an average radius of R ~ 1.5 Mpc ~ 2R_200, mirroring results for massive clusters. For the first time we also report a similar suppression of the specific star formation rate within such galaxies, on average by 40% relative to the field, thus directly revealing the impact of the group environment in quenching star formation within infalling galaxies. At fixed galaxy density and stellar mass, this suppression is stronger in more massive groups, implying that both local and global group environment play a role in quenching. The results favor an average quenching timescale of at least ~2 Gyr and strongly suggest that a combination of tidal interactions and starvation is responsible. We present the global group properties of two samples of galaxy groups containing 39 high quality X-ray selected systems and 38 optically (spectroscopically) selected systems in coincident spatial regions at 0.12

The presence of substructure in galaxy groups and clusters is believed to be a sign of recent galaxy accretion and can be used not only to probe the assembly history of these structures, but also the evolution of their member galaxies. Using the Dressler-Shectman (DS) Test, we study substructure in a sample of intermediate redshift (z ~ 0.4) galaxy groups from the Group Environment and Evolution Collaboration (GEEC) group catalog. We find that 4 of the 15 rich GEEC groups, with an average velocity dispersion of ~525 km s-1, are identified as having significant substructure. The identified regions of localized substructure lie on the group outskirts and in some cases appear to be infalling. In a comparison of galaxy properties for the members of groups with and without substructure, we find that the groups with substructure have a significantly higher fraction of blue and star-forming galaxies and a parent colour distribution that resembles that of the field population rather than the overall group population. In addition, we observe correlations between the detection of substructure and other dynamical measures, such as velocity distributions and velocity dispersion profiles. Based on this analysis, we conclude that some galaxy groups contain significant substructure and that these groups have properties and galaxy populations that differ from groups with no detected substructure. These results indicate that the substructure galaxies, which lie preferentially on the group outskirts and could be infalling, do not exhibit signs of environmental effects, since little or no star-formation quenching is observed in these systems., Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, MNRAS accepted

The role of environmentally induced gas stripping in driving galaxy evolution in groups remains poorly understood. Here we present extensive Chandra and Very Large Array mosaic observations of the hot and cold interstellar medium within the members of the nearby, X-ray bright NGC 2563 group, a prime target for studies of the role of gas stripping and interactions in relatively small host halos. Our observations cover nearly all group members within a projected radius of 1.15 Mpc (~1.4 R_vir) of the group center, down to a limiting X-ray luminosity and HI mass of 3e39 erg/s and 2e8 M_sun, respectively. The X-ray data are consistent with efficient ram pressure stripping of the hot gas halos of early-type galaxies near the group core, but no X-ray tails are seen and the limited statistics preclude strong conclusions. The HI results suggest moderate HI mass loss from the group members when compared to similar field galaxies. Six of the 20 HI-detected group members show HI evidence of ongoing interactions with other galaxies or with the intragroup medium. Suggestive evidence is further seen for galaxies with close neighbors in position-velocity space to show relatively low HI content, consistent with tidal removal of HI. The results thus indicate removal of both hot and cold gas from the group members via a combination of ram pressure stripping and tidal interactions. We also find that 16 of the 20 HI detections occur on one side of the group, reflecting an unusual morphological segregation whose origin remains unclear., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures. We present the first measurement of the evolution of the galaxy group stellar mass function (GrSMF) to redshift z>~1 and low masses (M*>10^12 Msun). Our results are based on early data from the Carnegie-Spitzer-IMACS (CSI) Survey, utilizing low-resolution spectra and broadband optical/near-IR photometry to measure redshifts for a 3.6um selected sample of 37,000 galaxies over a 5.3 deg^2 area to z~1.2. Employing a standard friends-of-friends algorithm for all galaxies more massive than log(M*/Msun)=10.5, we find a total of ~4000 groups. Correcting for spectroscopic incompleteness (including slit collisions), we build cumulative stellar mass functions for these groups in redshift bins at z>0.35, comparing to the z=0 and z>0 mass functions from various group and cluster samples. Our derived mass functions match up well with z>0.35 X-ray selected clusters, and strong evolution is evident at all masses over the past 8 Gyr. Given the already low level of star formation activity in galaxies at these masses, we therefore attribute most of the observed growth in the GrSMF to group-group and group-galaxy mergers, in accordance with qualitative notions of hierarchical structure formation. Given the factor 3-10 increase in the number density of groups and clusters with M*>10^12 Msun since z=1 and the strong anticorrelation between star formation activity and environmental density, this late-time growth in group-sized halos may therefore be an important contributor to the structural and star-formation evolution of massive galaxies over the past 8 Gyr., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, submitted to ApJL. We describe the Carnegie-Spitzer-IMACS (CSI) Survey, a wide-field, near-IR selected spectrophotometric redshift survey with the Inamori Magellan Areal Camera and Spectrograph (IMACS) on Magellan-Baade. By defining a flux-limited sample of galaxies in Spitzer 3.6micron imaging of SWIRE fields, the CSI Survey efficiently traces the stellar mass of average galaxies to z~1.5. This first paper provides an overview of the survey selection, observations, processing of the photometry and spectrophotometry. We also describe the processing of the data: new methods of fitting synthetic templates of spectral energy distributions are used to derive redshifts, stellar masses, emission line luminosities, and coarse information on recent star-formation. Our unique methodology for analyzing low-dispersion spectra taken with multilayer prisms in IMACS, combined with panchromatic photometry from the ultraviolet to the IR, has yielded 37,000 high quality redshifts in our first 5.3 sq.degs of the SWIRE XMM-LSS field. We use three different approaches to estimate our redshift errors and find robust agreement. Over the full range of 3.6micron fluxes of our selection, we find typical uncertainties of sigma_z/(1+z) < 0.015. In comparisons with previously published VVDS redshifts, for example, we find a scatter of sigma_z/(1+z) = 0.012 for galaxies at 0.8< z< 1.2. For galaxies brighter and fainter than i=23 mag, we find sigma_z/(1+z) = 0.009 and sigma_z/(1+z) = 0.025, respectively. Notably, our low-dispersion spectroscopy and analysis yields comparable redshift uncertainties and success rates for both red and blue galaxies, largely eliminating color-based systematics that can seriously bias observed dependencies of galaxy evolution on environment., Comment: Submitted to the Astrophysical Journal; 19 pages and 14 figures
