The idea of having a "Compare" Forum focusing on the above title was first discussed with one of the Editors of "Compare" during a PhD defence in Oslo in 2011. The PhD dissertation itself was linked to a larger project in which researchers from the North (Norway) and the South (South Africa) had been collaborating in educational research for over 10 years. Despite the fact that North-South collaboration is not a new issue on the agenda (King 1985) it is still a timely topic to explore, particularly given the recent growth and moves towards North-South-South collaboration or even "South-South Cooperation in Education and Development" (Chisholm and Steiner-Khamsi 2009). Thus, any discussion of research collaboration, whether North-South or South-South, is seen as an ideal topic for comparative education, particularly when exploring why there should be collaboration at all and if so what are some of the challenges. Ultimately, this Forum allows researchers from very different backgrounds (geographically and academically) the opportunity to explore some of the issues of collaboration between researchers/academics in the North and the South. The four contributions to this Forum have taken different perspectives towards the issue, albeit there are some commonalities. All would see North-South or South-South collaboration as something useful, but also challenging. Ultimately all of the contributors see the need for collaboration in order to promote real North-South dialogue and understanding. This "Compare" forum is comprised of the following articles: (1) Introduction (Halla B. In this paper we explore the perceived desirable characteristics of South African Life Orientation teachers for teaching sexuality and HIV/AIDS. We also investigate the extent to which these characteristics can be understood as parts of a role script for teaching HIV/AIDS and sexuality. Data were collected from teachers who taught Grade Eight and Grade Nine students in South African public high schools. The teachers particularly emphasised the importance of personality and life experience as important characteristics for teaching sexuality and HIV/AIDS. In addition, they felt that it was challenging to create an open dialogue in the classroom and at the same time maintain classroom discipline. The teachers did not perceive that teaching about sexuality and HIV/AIDS was a role that a teacher could step in and out of. On the other hand, they were accustomed to playing different roles with respect to the students, such as parent, friend, counsellor and social worker. (Contains 2 notes.)

Early coital debut is a risk factor for HIV. In this paper we investigate the predictors of young adolescents' transition to first intercourse using a social cognition theoretical framework. The analyses reported here were based on a longitudinal study of 2360 students in the schools allocated to the control arm of a cluster-randomized controlled trial to investigate the effect of a school-based HIV prevention programme among Grade 8 students in Cape Town. Structural equation modelling was performed with Mplus version 3.11. Of the 1440 students who were virgins at baseline, 1144 remained virgins 15 months later and 296 (20.6%) reported having had their first sexual intercourse. Transition to first sexual intercourse was more likely among males than females, among older students and among students with a lower socio-economic status. Transition to first sexual intercourse was significantly associated with intentions to have sexual intercourse, poor self-efficacy to negotiate delayed sex and intimate partner violence. The model predicted 35% of the variance in intentions and 16% of the variance in transition. These findings indicate some of the factors that influence young adolescent's transition to first intercourse and that need to be addressed when designing effective interventions. Background: In Kenya, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is recommended for adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) at high risk of HIV. Health providers play a critical role in the uptake and effective use of sexual and reproductive health services; however, few published studies have explored providers' attitudes toward and experiences delivering PrEP to AGYW.Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional qualitative study, interviewing 113 providers at 36 public, private, and nongovernmental health facilities in Kenya, South Africa, and Zimbabwe that were offering PrEP during the research period or were likely to offer PrEP in the future. Data were coded in NVivo 11, and an applied thematic analysis was conducted.Results: Most providers preferred that adolescent girls wait until age 18 to have sex but acknowledged that many girls younger than 18 could benefit from oral PrEP. Their primary concern was whether adolescent girls would be able to take PrEP daily, especially if they do not tell their parents or partners they are using it. Providers reported that it was more challenging to deliver PrEP and other HIV services to girls younger than 18. Those with experience providing PrEP pointed to stigma and lack of PrEP awareness in communities as two primary barriers to PrEP uptake and use.Conclusions: Providers were generally accepting of oral PrEP as an HIV prevention option for AGYW; however, many had negative attitudes about adolescent girls being sexually active and concerns about whether they could take PrEP daily. Introduction: HIV self‐testing (HIVST) has the potential to increase uptake of HIV testing among untested populations in sub‐Saharan Africa and is on the brink of scale‐up. However, it is unclear to what extent HIVST would be supported by stakeholders, what policy frameworks are in place and how variations between contexts might influence country‐preparedness for scale‐up. This qualitative study assessed the perceptions of HIVST among stakeholders in three sub‐Saharan countries. Methods: Fifty‐four key informant interviews were conducted in Kenya (n=16), Malawi (n=26) and South Africa (n=12) with government policy makers, academics, activists, donors, procurement specialists, laboratory practitioners and health providers. A thematic analysis was conducted in each country and a common coding framework allowed for inter‐country analysis to identify common and divergent themes across contexts. Results: Respondents welcomed the idea of an accurate, easy‐to‐use, rapid HIV self‐test which could increase testing across all populations. High‐risk groups, such as men, Men who have sex with men (MSM), couples and young people in particular, could be targeted through a range of health facility and community‐based distribution points. HIVST is already endorsed in Kenya, and political support for scale‐up exists in South Africa and Malawi. However, several caveats remain. Further research, policy and ensuing guidelines should consider how to regulate, market and distribute HIVST, ensure quality assurance of tests and human rights, and critically, link testing to appropriate support and treatment services. Low literacy levels in some target groups would also need context‐specific consideration before scale up. World Health Organization (WHO) policy and regulatory frameworks are needed to guide the process in those areas which are new or specific to self‐testing. Conclusions: Stakeholders in three HIV endemic sub‐Saharan countries felt that HIVST will be an important complement to existing community and facility‐based testing approaches if accompanied by the same essential components of any HIV testing service, including access to accurate information and linkages to care. While there is an increasingly positive global policy environment regarding HIVST, several implementation and social challenges limit scale‐up. The article focuses on issues of North-South and South-South research collaborations in higher education and development. It outlines some of the complexities of the North-South-South collaboration by probing various understandings of the term internationalization. It notes that the nature of internationalization and North-South-South collaboration depends a great deal on the individual academics' role in such partnerships.
