Abstract

Independence complexes of circle graphs are purely combinatorial objects. However, when constructed from some diagram of a link $L$, they reveal topological properties of $L$, more specifically, of its Khovanov homology. We analyze the homotopy type of independence complexes of circle graphs, with a focus on those arising when the graph is bipartite. Abstract

For a reduced alternating diagram of a knot with a prime determinant $p,$ the Kauffman-Harary conjecture states that every non-trivial Fox $p$-coloring of the knot assigns different colors to its arcs. In this paper, we prove a generalization of the conjecture stated nineteen years ago by Asaeda, Przytycki, and Sikora: for every pair of distinct arcs in the reduced alternating diagram of a prime link with determinant $\delta,$ there exists a Fox $\delta$-coloring that distinguishes them., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

In this note, we show that if there is a knot in $S^3$ having $\mathbb{Z}_m$ torsion in its Khovanov homology, then there are infinitely many hyperbolic knots and infinitely many prime satellite knots having $\mathbb{Z}_m$ torsion in their Khovanov homology. As an application, we give the first known examples of hyperbolic knots and links with odd (and other non-$\mathbb{Z}_2$ torsion) in their Khovanov homology., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures. 8. Algebraic concordance order of almost classical knots

Abstract

Torsion in the concordance group $\mathscr{C}$ of knots in $S^3$ can be studied with the algebraic concordance group $\mathscr{G}^{\mathbb{F}}$. Here $\mathbb{F}$ is a field of characteristic $\chi(\mathbb{F}) \ne 2$. The group $\mathscr{G}^{\mathbb{F}}$ was defined by J. Levine, who also obtained an algebraic classification when $\mathbb{F}=\mathbb{Q}$. While the concordance group $\mathscr{C}$ is abelian, it embeds into the non-abelian virtual knot concordance group $\mathscr{VC}$. It is unknown if $\mathscr{VC}$ admits non-classical finite torsion. Here we define the virtual algebraic concordance group $\mathscr{VG}^{\mathbb{F}}$ for almost classical knots . This is an analogue of $\mathscr{G}^{\mathbb{F}}$ for homologically trivial knots in thickened surfaces $\Sigma \times [0,1]$, where $\Sigma$ is closed and oriented. The main result is an algebraic classification of $\mathscr{VG}^{\mathbb{F}}$. A consequence of the classification is that $\mathscr{G}^{\mathbb{Q}}$ embeds into $\mathscr{VG}^{\mathbb{Q}}$ and $\mathscr{VG}^{\mathbb{Q}}$ contains many nontrivial finite-order elements that are not algebraically concordant to any classical Seifert matrix. The Gram determinant of type $A$ was introduced by Lickorish in his work on invariants of 3 - manifolds. We generalize the theory of the Gram determinant of type $A$ by evaluating, in the annulus, a bilinear form of non-intersecting connections in the disc. The main result provides a closed formula for this Gram determinant. Abstract

Based on the presentation of the Kauffman bracket skein module of the torus given by the third author in previous work, Charles D. Frohman and R\u{a}zvan Gelca established a complete description of the multiplicative operation leading to a famous product-to-sum formula. In this paper, we study the multiplicative structure of the Kauffman bracket skein algebra of the thickened four-holed sphere. We present an algorithm to compute the product of any two elements of the algebra, and give an explicit formula for some families of curves. We surmise that the algorithm has quasi-polynomial growth with respect to the number of crossings of a pair of curves. Abstract

In the Khovanov homology of links, presence of $\mathbb{Z}_2$-torsion is a very common phenomenon. Finite number of examples of knots with $\mathbb{Z}_n$-torsion for $n>2$ were also known, none for $n>8$. In this paper, we prove that there are infinite families of links whose Khovanov homology contains $\mathbb{Z}_n$-torsion for $2 < n < 9$ and $\mathbb{Z}_{2^s}$-torsion for $s < 24$. We also introduce $4$-braid links with $\mathbb{Z}_3$-torsion which are counterexamples to the PS braid conjecture. Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate structural alterations and healing responses in the trabecular meshwork region with optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) following after gonioscopy assisted transluminal trabeculotomy (GATT) and microincisional trabeculectomy (MIT). Methods: 73 eyes of 67 patients (M:F = 45:22) with ≥6 months of follow-up after MIT (n = 41) or GATT (n = 32) with or without combined cataract surgery were included for this prospective study. The angle as seen on AS-OCT at 1, 3, 6 months after surgery were evaluated for structural alterations like peripheral anterior synechiae (PAS), hyphema, and hyperreflective scarring responses. The scarring was graded according to the linear extent measured from the centre of the trabecular meshwork (TM) gutter to the sclera/cornea as mild (<250μ), moderate (250–500μ), and severe(˃500μ), while the pattern of scarring was graded as open saucer/gutter, closed gutter, and trench pattern. The association of the need for medication or surgical outcome and clinical variables and AS-OCT parameters including the pattern and severity of scarring were analysed using multivariate regression. Results: All eyes achieved significant reduction of IOP and number of medications with a final IOP of 15±3.2mm Hg at a mean follow-up of 8±32. months. While mild scarring was seen more common in MIT, severe scarring was seen in >65% of GATT eyes compared to 31% of MIT eye, p<0.001. An open saucer was equally seen in MIT and GATT while the trench pattern was more commonly seen in GATT eyes (>50%). Severe scarring in a trench pattern seemed to predict the need for medications for IOP control, though they independently did not seem to influence the final IOP or surgical outcome. Conclusion: A severe form of scarring in a trench pattern on AS-OCT predicted the need for glaucoma medications after MIGS surgery. Regular monitoring of the scarring responses by AS-OCT and clinical examination are necessary to identify those at need for medications after MIGS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The intraocular pressure (IOP), glaucoma medications, and angle evaluation by ASOCT at 1 week, and 1 month were compared between the two groups.Results: Thirty-two eyes of 32 consecutive patients, aged 40± 20.1 years (20 exfoliation glaucoma, 9 juvenile open-angle, and 3 developmental glaucoma), that developed IOP spikes between immediate (n=20) or early (n=12) IOP spikes after GATT, were included. Immediate postoperative spikes were seen in 20 eyes due to retained viscoelastic (n=8), hyphema (n=8) in uncontrolled hypertension, and peripheral anterior synechiae (PAS) (n=6) of which only one eye required medication at 2 months. Causes of immediate IOP spikes on ASOCT included an inverted/reattached trabecular shelf, iris strands in eyes with abnormal iris in developmental glaucoma, and PAS in 1– 2 quadrants. Causes of early IOP spikes included PAS > 3 quadrants (n=8), and hyperreflective fibrotic tissue over TM (n=4) with 50% requiring medications at 2 months. Abstract

Introduction: The worldwide higher prevalence of obesity is currently one of the most important reasons for the occurrence of several health disorders, along with an increased risk of mortality and morbidity. However, the magnitude of the effect of sub-maximal aerobic exercise on cardiac autonomic and electrical function among Indian obese individuals has yet to be established. Aim: To evaluate the effect of exercise on ECG components and their correlation with Body Mass Index (BMI) among young asymptomatic obese and non-obese individuals, in order to assess the risk for developing Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD) in the future. Materials and Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted at the Autonomic Research Laboratory of the Physiology Department at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, between January 2017 to December 2017. Two hundred healthy medicos were divided into two groups: Obese (BMI =25 kg/m²; n=88) and non-obese (BMI =18.5 to =23 kg/m²; n=112). Resting Blood Pressure (BP) was manually recorded, followed by the recording of long lead-II ECG in the supine posture both at rest and ten minutes after submaximal (50% VO2max) aerobic exercise on a treadmill using the modified Bruce protocol and following the Astrand-Rhyming nomogram. The HR, QT interval, and RR interval were recorded from the lead-II ECG. The measured QT interval was corrected using Bazett's formula (QTC=QT/vRR). The results were analysed using both unpaired and paired t-tests and the Pearson correlation coefficient in Graphpad-Quickcalc software. Results: Significant prolongation of the QTc interval both at rest (p-value: 0.019) and after exercise (p-value: 0.044), along with delayed Heart Rate Recovery (HRR) (p-value: 0.001), were observed among the obese compared to the non-obese population. Additionally, a significantly positive linear correlation was observed between BMI and ECG components at rest (BMIRHR: r:+0.293; p: 0.005 and BMI-QTc Interval: r:+0.226; p-value: 0.034) and during the recovery state (BMI-HRR: r:+0.42; p-value: 0.00004 and BMI-QTc Interval: r:+0.365; p-value: 0.0004), only among the obese. Conclusion: At rest, obese individuals had an elevated QTc, which could be due to alterations in cardiac autonomic function, along with a significant positive correlation between BMI and RHR, indicating lower aerobic fitness in this population. Prolongation of the QTc interval, delayed decrease in HR, and a significant positive correlation with BMI after exercise in obese individuals indicated myocardial repolarisation instability, autonomic dysfunction, and an increased risk of out-of-hospital sudden cardiac events in these individuals.
