Abstract

Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Psyllidae: Hemiptera) and Aphis gossypii Glover (Aphididae; Hemiptera) are destructive sap-feeding pests of citrus and cotton, respectively. This study assessed the toxicity potential of indigenous flora of Soon valley and surrounding salt range (Punjab, Pakistan) against D. citri and A. gossypii. Among acetone extracts of 40 plant species, the extracts of Mentha longifolia (L.) Huds., Melilotus officinalis (L.) Pall., Nerium indicum Mill., Datura alba L. and Salvia officinalis L. showed highest psyllid mortality (i.e. 93, 91, 89, 88 and 81%, respectively). Bioassay with most effective extracts further revealed that the most toxic extracts were S. officinalis, N. indicum and M. longifolia with LC50 values of 18.59, 20.27 and 20.73%, respectively. Similar trend of toxicity was observed in case of their LT50 values. These results suggest the putative effectiveness and further biochemical characterization of these plant extracts for the management of D. citri and A. gossypii and other sap-feeding insect pests.

6. Utilization of high-density fuel and beryllium elements for the neutron flux enhancement in typical MTR type research reactors

Abstract

Pakistan Research Reactor-1 (PARR-1) is a typical MTR type swimming pool reactor utilizing low enriched uranium (LEU), i.e. 19.99% enriched in 235 U, silicide dispersion fuel of density 3.28 gU/cm 3 . This simulation study was conducted by employing the standard reactor physics simulation codes WIMS-D/4, CITATION, and a burnup analysis code FCAP along with a reactor thermal hydraulic simulation code PARET. The present study shows that by directly substituting LEU silicide dispersion fuel of density 4.8 gU/cm 3 in place of fuel currently in use in PARR-1 and by loading beryllium elements at the unused 9 × 6 position of PARR-1 grid plate, a smaller equilibrium core can be designed that can provide 82% higher neutron fluxes at the central flux trap position at 14% lower cost than the existing core. Fuel cycle length of this core is also two days larger than the existing core and this core can be operated safely at the existing power of 10 MW with the existing coolant flow rate of 1000 m 3 /h. A possible use of LEU U–Mo monolithic fuel of density 15.3 gU/cm 3 with some adjustment in fuel to moderator ratio and use of Be reflector would provide 89% higher neutron flux in PARR-1 at 29% lower cost. Fuel cycle length of this core will be five days shorter than the existing core and it will require 48% more coolant flow rate for its safe operation at 10 MW.

Abstract

Anonychia totalis is a rare disease characterized by complete absence of finger and toe nails. Possible associations include anomalies of bones, teeth, skull, hair, skin and sweat glands besides hearing and intelligence impairments. We report here a 60-year-old woman with low back pain and tenderness at the lumbosacral spine who was found to have complete absence of all nails, abnormal teeth, dry skin and left ectropion. She was educated about the disease and managed for the backache on rehabilitation guidelines. Gene mapping of her whole family was planned, but she was lost to follow up. This case provides evidence of the presence of this condition in Pakistani population. There is a need for further investigation and pooling of cases to build clinical data about phenotypes and the inheritance patterns of this disorder in our population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

8. FREQUENCY OF TINEA PEDIS IN MILITARY RECRUITS AT DERA ISMAIL KHAN, PAKISTAN.

Abstract

Background: Tinea pedis is the most common fungal infection especially prevalent in certain groups. The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of tinea pedis and its predisposing factors in the military recruits. Material & Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Combined Military Hospital, D.I.Khan, from March 2012 to September 2012. A random sample of 350 individuals was selected out of individuals who were undergoing initial military training. Clinical examination, microscopic examination of scrapings from suspected lesions to see fungal hyphae and subsequent culture was done for species identification. Findings were recorded on a performa. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 10.0. Results: The mean age of subjects was 18.57±1.02 (16-23) years. On clinical examination tinea pedis was suspected in 34 (9.71%) out of 350 subjects. A total of 10 (2.8%) individuals were found to have positive fungal hyphae while 14 (4%) were culture positive for trichophyton. Out of 14 positive cultures, 8 yielded growth of Trichophyton mentagrophytes, 5 Trichophyton interdigitale and one yielded Trichophyton rubrum. Predisposing factors were occlusive footwear for >8 hours/ day in (96%), history of excessive sweating in (7.7%), history of fungal infection of feet during last 6 months in (3.4%) and fungal infection of nails during the last 6 months in (2.8%). Conclusion: The prevalence of tinea pedis in Pakistani military recruits is low. Occlusive footwear for more than 8 hours a day is the major risk factor . Excessive sweating and history of previous fungal infection are also risk factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
