3. Toward machine-learning-assisted PW-class high-repetition-rate experiments with solid targets.

Abstract

We present progress in utilizing a machine learning (ML) assisted optimization framework to study the trends in a parameter space defined by spectrally shaped, high-intensity, petawatt-class (8 J, 45 fs) laser pulses interacting with solid targets and give the first simulation-based overview of predicted trends. A neural network (NN) incorporating uncertainty quantification is trained to predict the number of hot electrons generated by the laser–target interaction as a function of pulse shaping parameters. The predictions of this NN serve as the basis function for a Bayesian optimization framework to navigate this space. For post-experimental evaluation, we compare two separate neural network (NN) models. One is based solely on data from experiments, and the other is trained only on ensemble particle-in-cell simulations. Reviewing the predicted and observed trends across the experiment-capable laser parameter search space, we find that both ML models predict a maximal increase in hot electron generation at a level of approximately 12%–18%; however, no statistically significant enhancement was observed in experiments. On direct comparison of the NN models, the average discrepancy is 8.5%, with a maximum of 30%. Since shot-to-shot fluctuations in experiments affect the observations, we evaluate the behavior of our optimization framework by performing virtual experiments that vary the number of repeated observations and the noise levels. 4. Living with chronic pain following a pain management programme

Abstract

Chronic pain is pain that has lasted for longer than six months (B.H. Smith, Elliott, & Hannaford, 2004) and has a wide ranging impact on individuals’ lives, affecting physical, social and psychological functioning (B. H. Smith et al., 2001). Despite the impact of chronic pain and the significantly increased use of healthcare (Von Korff, Wagner, Dworkin, & Saunders, 1991), the effectiveness of treatments for chronic pain are limited to a minority of individuals, whether of a medical or psychological orientation (Turk, 2005). One approach to chronic pain is through pain management programmes, which aim to increase individuals’ quality of life, psychological functioning and levels of activity (British Pain Society, 2007). Although previous reviews of the effectiveness of pain management programmes have concluded that such programmes are effective (Eccleston, Williams, & Morley, 2012; Flor, Fydrich, & Turk, 1992; Scascighini, Toma, Dober-Spielmann, & Sprott, 2008), these reviews have focussed on the short-term (less than 12 months) outcomes. Considering that such programmes do not ameliorate pain and that individuals will often experience pain for the rest of their lives there is a need for review of the long-term outcomes of these programmes. Paper one of this thesis is a review of the quantitative literature concerning long-term (greater than 12 months) psychological and quality of life outcomes of pain management programmes. Whilst quantitative research concerning chronic pain has focussed upon the shortterm effectiveness of psychological treatments, qualitative research has focused upon the experience of chronic pain prior to interventions (Hellström, 2001; J. A. Smith & Osborn, 2007; Toye et al., 2013). In particular, this research has highlighted themes relating to a changing understanding of individuals’ bodies and a threat to their identity (Hellström, 2001; Osborn & Smith, 2006; J. A. Smith & Osborn, 2007; Toye et al., 2013). As there is now greater certainty of the effectiveness of psychological approaches to chronic pain (Eccleston, Williams, & Morley, 2012) there is currently a shift away from studies of the effectiveness of interventions to a greater focus upon the mechanisms of change (McCracken & Marin, 2014; Morley, Williams, & Eccleston, 2013). Qualitative research of living with chronic pain following pain management programmes would inform both clinicians’ and researchers’ understanding of the experience of living with chronic pain after an intervention and therefore contribute to the development of this area of research. It would also help to contextualise psychological models of chronic pain (Hayes, Strosahl, & Wilson, 2004; Vlaeyen & Linton, 2000) within a phenomenological understanding (J. A. Smith, Flowers, & Larkin, 2009). The second paper of this thesis aims to provide a phenomenological account of the experiences of participants who have completed a pain management programme 12-36 months prior to participating in the research.

Abstract

For more than half a century, researchers around the world have been engaged in attempts to achieve fusion ignition as a proof of principle of various fusion concepts. Following the Lawson criterion, an ignited plasma is one where the fusion heating power is high enough to overcome all the physical processes that cool the fusion plasma, creating a positive thermodynamic feedback loop with rapidly increasing temperature. In inertially confined fusion, ignition is a state where the fusion plasma can begin "burn propagation" into surrounding cold fuel, enabling the possibility of high energy gain. While "scientific breakeven" (i.e., unity target gain) has not yet been achieved (here target gain is 0.72, 1.37 MJ of fusion for 1.92 MJ of laser energy), this Letter reports the first controlled fusion experiment, using laser indirect drive, on the National Ignition Facility to produce capsule gain (here 5.8) and reach ignition by nine different formulations of the Lawson criterion.

Abstract

The effects of modification on the physical and dielectric properties have been examined by a study of the tensile and dielectric properties of an adduct of cis-1,4-polybutadiene and p-toluene sulphenyl chloride. A series of polymers with a range of degree of modification were prepared for this study and the relationships between physical properties, the extent of modification and the molecular structure are discussed. Carboxyl groups have been added to polydienes using difunctional sulphenyl chlorides. Carboxy-sulphehyl chlorides and chloro-carbonyl sulphenyl chlorides were both used to prepare polymers which could react with metal salts to form ionomers. Chlorocarbonyl sulphenyl chlorides were also used as grafting agents and a number of graft copolymers of polydienes and polyethers were prepared. The surfactant properties of some of these grafts were investigated. The final part of this thesis reports a study of the kinetics of the addition of 4-chloro-benzenesulphenyl chloride to a number of polydienes and to a small molecular analogue trans-4-octene. The significance of the results with respect to the mechanism of addition of sulphenyl chlorides to olefins is discussed.

35. Geomorphological and geophysical analyses of the Hebron Fault, SW Namibia: implications for stable continental region seismic hazard.

Abstract

This study explores the geomorphological expression and geological context of a normal fault scarp in a stable continental region (SCR) which we interpret as having failed in large (M w >7) earthquakes. Records of such large normal faulting events in an SCR (or even in more rapidly deforming regions) are extremely rare, and so understanding this feature is of international interest. The scarp is exceptionally well-preserved due to the extensive calcrete/silcrete cementation. In areas where this cementation is reduced or absent the scarp is more diffuse, as expected for a feature formed by one or more paleoearthquakes. The exceptional preservation aids comparison with data sets based on scarps which have formed more recently. Our analysis is based on a high-resolution digital elevation model of the Hebron Fault scarp in southern Namibia using pan-sharpened Worldview-3 satellite stereophotos (0.31 m resolution). We make scarp height measurements at 160 locations providing improved estimates of the average displacement (5.9 m), maximum displacement (10.1 m), and the minimum fault length (45 km). No consistent evidence of lateral displacements in water courses or alluvial fan margins were found implying predominantly normal displacement. A newly described section in the northwest has en-echelon scarps consistent with a component of strike-slip motion that may be explained by its difference in strike from the central section. Most channels crossing the fault show a single knick-point. The displacement varies smoothly as it crosses a number of different generations of alluvial fan surfaces. No evidence of a multiscarp or a composite scarp were observed. We have therefore found no evidence for a mutiple-event origin for the scarp, although, this lack of evidence does not conclusively demonstrate a single-event origin. Published regressions, based on the limited data available for SCRs, suggest that the mean expected average displacement (⁠|$\bar{D}_{\rm av}$|⁠) for a faults of this length is 1.2–3.1 m implying that the scarp is likely to have formed in 2–5 events with an expected Mw = ∼7.1 though displacements in individual events may exceed these average values. Comparison with the regional geology and aeromagnetic data sets suggests that the fault reactivates a Mesoproterozoic ductile structure, the Nam Shear Zone, and that the location, orientation and segmentation of the scarp is controlled by the alignment of pre-existing structurally weak zones with the present-day stress regime. The fault has undergone repeated brittle reactivation, accumulating ∼110 m of vertical offset since the deposition of the Ediacaran-to-Cambrian Nama Group. This is less than expected from global compilations of total displacement and fault length data, suggesting that the fault rapidly attained its current length by recruiting an existing weak zone and is expected to accumulate displacement at a relatively constant length in the future. Abstract

The burden of large and rare copy number genetic variants (CNVs) as well as certain specific CNVs increase the risk of developing schizophrenia. Several cognitive measures are purported schizophrenia endophenotypes and may represent an intermediate point between genetics and the illness. This paper investigates the influence of CNVs on cognition. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature exploring the effect of CNV burden on general intelligence. We included ten primary studies with a total of 18,847 participants and found no evidence of association. In a new psychosis family study, we investigated the effects of CNVs on specific cognitive abilities. We examined the burden of large and rare CNVs (>200 kb, <1% MAF) as well as known schizophrenia-associated CNVs in patients with psychotic disorders, their unaffected relatives and controls (N = 3428) from the Psychosis Endophenotypes International Consortium (PEIC). The carriers of specific schizophrenia-associated CNVs showed poorer performance than non-carriers in immediate (P = 0.0036) and delayed (P = 0.0115) verbal recall. We found suggestive evidence that carriers of schizophrenia-associated CNVs had poorer block design performance (P = 0.0307). We do not find any association between CNV burden and cognition. Our findings show that the known high-risk CNVs are not only associated with schizophrenia and other neurodevelopmental disorders, but are also a contributing factor to impairment in cognitive domains such as memory and perceptual reasoning, and act as intermediate biomarkers of disease risk.

Abstract

This article focuses on Bretherton's treatment of Pentecostalism and Black Power and how they conceive and challenge notions of democracy, citizenship and capitalism. Recognising the 'tensional' relationship between democracy and Christianity, I explore his treatment of Pentecostalism and capitalism. I am sympathetic to Bretherton's analysis of the socio-political transformation Pentecostalism offers, but point to regressive influences associated with the 'prosperity gospel'.
