The novel total left anterior descending devascularization (TLD) approach in a canine ischemic heart failure model limits collateral flow in the ischemic zone and provides excellent early survival and repeatable development of chronic ischemic heart failure in the canine heart. This work provides a consistent large animal model for investigating heart failure mechanisms and testing novel therapeutics.

The design and development of functional materials with real-life applications are highly demanding. Understanding and controlling inter- and intra-molecular interactions provide opportunities to design new materials. A judicious manipulation of the molecular structure significantly alters such interactions and can boost selected properties and functions of the material. There is burgeoning evidence of the beneficial effects of non-covalent interactions (NCIs), showing that manipulating NCIs may generate functional materials with a wide variety of physical properties leading to applications in catalysis, drug delivery, crystal engineering

Currently approved COVID-19 vaccines prevent symptomatic infection, hospitalization, and death of the disease. However, the emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants raises concerns of reduced vaccine effectiveness and increased risk of infection. Repeated homologous booster in elderly individuals and immunocompromised patients is considered to solve severe form of disease caused by new SARS-CoV-2 variants but cannot protect completely against breakthrough infection. In our previous study we assessed the immunogenicity of an adenovirus-based vaccine expressing SARS-CoV-2-S1 (Ad5.S1) in mice, resulting in that a single immunization with Ad5.S1, via subcutaneously injection or intranasal delivery, induced robust humoral and cellular immune responses [1]. As a follow up study, here we showed that vaccinated mice had high titers of anti-S1 antibodies at one year after vaccination compared to PBS immunized mice. Furthermore, one booster dose of non-adjuvanted recombinant S1Beta (rS1Beta) subunit vaccine was effective in stimulating strong long-lived S1-specific immune responses and inducing significantly high neutralizing antibodies against the Wuhan, Beta, and Delta strain with 3.6- to 19.5-fold change increases. Importantly, the booster dose elicits cross-reactive antibody responses resulting in ACE2 binding inhibition against spike of SARS-CoV-2 variants (Wuhan, Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Zeta, Kappa, New York, India) as early as two-week post-boost injection, persisting over 28 weeks after a booster vaccination. Interestingly, levels of neutralizing antibodies were correlated with not only level of S1-binding IgG but also level of ACE2 inhibition in the before- and after-booster serum samples. Our findings show that S1 recombinant protein subunit vaccine candidate as a booster has potential to offer cross-neutralization against broad variants, and has important implications for vaccine control of new emerging breakthrough SARS-CoV-2 variants in elderly individuals primed with adenovirus-based vaccine like AZD1222 and Ad26.COV2.S.

Objectives The aim of this study is to gain experienced nursing perspective on current and future complication reporting and grading in Urology, establish the CAMUS CCI and quality control the use of the Clavien-Dindo Classification (CDC) in nursing staff. Subjects and Methods The 12-part REDCap-based Delphi survey was developed in conjunction with expert nurse, urologist and methodologist input. Certified local and international inpatient and outpatient nurses specialised in urology, perioperative nurses and urology-specific advanced practice nurses/nurse practitioners will be included. A minimum sample size of 250 participants is targeted. The survey assesses participant demographics, nursing experience and opinion on complication reporting and the proposed CAMUS reporting recommendations; grading of intervention events using the existing CDC and the proposed CAMUS Classification; and rating various clinical scenarios. Consensus will be defined as ≥75% agreement. If consensus is not reached, subsequent Delphi rounds will be performed under Steering Committee guidance. Results Twenty participants completed the pilot survey. Median survey completion time was 58 min (IQR 40-67). The survey revealed that 85% of nursing participants believe nurses should be involved in future complication reporting and grading but currently have poor confidence and inadequate relevant background education. Overall, 100% of participants recognise the universal demand for reporting consensus and 75% hold a preference towards the CAMUS System. Limitations include variability in nursing experience, complexity of supplemental grades and survey duration. Conclusion The integration of experienced nursing opinion and participation in complication reporting and grading systems in a modern and evolving hospital infrastructure may facilitate the assimilation of otherwise overlooked safety data. Incorporation of focused teaching into routine nursing education will be essential to ensure quality control and stimulate awareness of complication-related burden. This, in turn, has the potential to improve patient counselling and quality of care.

Two new organo-europium complexes (OEuCs) [Eu(tfac)3(TB-Im)] (Eu1) [Eu(hfac)3(TB-Im)] (Eu2) incorporating fluorinated (hexafluoroacetylacetone; Hhfaa) or hemi-fluorinated (trifluoroacetylacetone; Htfac) β-diketones together with the large bite angle N^N ligand (2-(4-thiazolyl)benzimidazole; TB-Im) have been synthesized and characterized. The structure of the complexes has been established by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) analysis and shows that the coordination sphere is composed of a EuO6N2 core (octacoordinated). Continuous shape measures (CShMs) revealed that the geometry around Eu(III) is trigonal dodecahedral with approximate D2d-symmetry. Efficient red emission is observed for both the complexes in solution with a fairly large photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY (QLEu) = 39.00–47.00%). Furthermore, by utilizing the experimental photoluminescence (PL) data and theoretical modelling employing density functional theory (DFT) in conjunction with LUMPAC, energy transfer (ET) and back energy transfer rates were calculated, and an ET mechanism for the sensitized PL is proposed and discussed in detail. Finally, the complexes were used as an emitting layer (EML) to fabricate 20 organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) by varying the doping concentration. Interestingly, both the complex-based OLEDs at 4 wt% doping concentration display white electroluminescence (EL) with the brightness (B) = 100.5–364.1 cd m−2 at very low turn-on voltage (Vturn-on) = 3.9–4.6 V. The overall electroluminescence performance of Eu1 and Eu2 is higher than that of the reported europium based single component white-OLEDs.

Global warming is occurring at an alarming rate, with climate change creating severe water-related hazards that are at the top of the natural disasters list. The highest human losses have been recorded in the past 50 years based on world meteorological organization calculations. Thus, everyone needs to play their part in environmental sustainability (ES). This will require a change in behavior; therefore, the current study considered pro-environmental behavior (PEB) crucial to ES among university employees. The moderating effect of green organizational culture (GOC) on the relationship between PEB and ES was also investigated. As it is typical of a Thai public university to expend a considerable amount of natural resources in the process of conducting its routine academic and operational activities, it is a setting worthy of investigation. The higher education sector is rarely explored in the areas of resource use and conservation; for this reason, this study was specifically targeted at the human factor in this specialized setting. A survey was performed on the faculty members of Thai public universities to verify the model. It was found that PEB influenced ES, and GOC moderated the relationship between PEB and ES. The results encompassed six dimensions of PEB and the moderating effect of GOC in the context of higher educational institutions. The findings have provided new insights into PEB intervention and modification in the context of higher education institutions whose management may use the results to strengthen employees' PEB by offering information, knowledge, and training.

The poultry industry is one of the significant hubs of the livestock industry and the world's largest food industry. In the last 50 years, it has become common to observe poultry antibiotic feeding to treat disease and growth. Antibiotics inhibit the growth of toxic and beneficial microorganisms. They are used as growth promoters when given in adjunctive therapy. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that fifty million pounds of antibiotics will be produced each year in the USA. Forty percent of the total antibiotics produced will be used in agriculture. 11 million pounds are used for the poultry sector and 24 million for domestic and wild animals. Ciprofloxacin, chloramphenicol, enrofloxacin, oxytetracycline, tylosin, tetracycline, virginiamycin, tilmicos, nitrofuran and sulfamids are used as growth promoters in the poultry industry globally. Antibacterial residues are found in various parts of poultry birds, e.g., kidney, heart, gizzard, liver, chest, thigh muscles, albumin and egg yolk. These residues may directly or indirectly produce many health concerns in human beings, such as toxic effects in the liver, brain, bone marrow, kidney, allergic reaction, mutagenicity, reproductive abnormalities and gastrointestinal tract leading to indigestion. In addition, resistant strains of pathogenic microbes pose an indirect threat to antibacterial residues that can spread to humans and contaminate residual fertilizers used as plant fertilizers. This chapter describes the benefits and contraindications of antibiotics used as growth promoters and the toxic effects of antimicrobial residues in poultry and humans.

Modern poultry industry faces the everlasting challenge of the growing demand for high-quality, low-priced food without compromising general hygiene, health, and welfare standards. To exploit optimal growth potential, antibiotic supplemented feeds were implemented in the past decades. But later on, alternative strategies to trigger the productive characteristics of birds were proposed, including the use of phytochemicals. Phytobiotics are herbs and their derivatives, endowed with many beneficial effects. Herbs and their products enhance feed intake by mitigating intestinal damage, strengthening intestinal integrity, compensating nutritional needs for local and general immune response, reducing the concentration of pathogenic microflora, and preventing local inflammatory response. This form of feed manipulation recently gained interest in the poultry sector due to the lack of side effects, immune system modulation boosting, and stress tolerance. On the other hand, several types of research highlighted the potentially harmful effects of some herbs and their metabolites. This raised concerns among consumers about their safety and implications as feed supplements or medicines. This chapter will provide insights into phytobiotics, their role in immunity and growth, and the possible risks of herbal supplemented feeds in the poultry sector.&nbsp

Background: Coronary artery aneurysm (CAA) incidence is thought to be as common as 0.3 to 5 % of the angiographically examined patients. Regardless of underlying pathogenic mechanism, it results in adverse long-term outcomes. The management of the CAA can be challenging because of lack of clearly defined guidelines. Case Presentation: A 75-year-old male without known history of tobacco abuse, DM, hypertension, OSA, CAD, PCI or connective tissue disorder presented with a chief complaint of 2 months of intermittent angina. He had an unremarkable serum troponin level and an EKG. Echocardiogram revealed moderate mitral regurgitation without any regional wall motion abnormality [1]. Because of equivocal exercise stress EKG test, he underwent a coronary angiogram which showed a proximal LAD stenosis followed by a localized fusiform aneurysm [2]. Given his significant symptoms, large size of the aneurysm, ostial LAD stenosis and proximity of diagonal arterial branch the patient underwent CABG surgery involving LIMA to LAD. Discussion: CAA patients may present with stable angina, ACS or it may just be an incidental finding on a coronary angiogram. The pathogenesis of CAA is not well known. However, some of the risk factors can be genetic predisposition, underlying atherosclerotic coronary artery disease, autoimmune and connective tissue disorders, trauma such as following PCI, and infections. Coronary CT can be of great utility in evaluating giant CAA as it can help to delineate mechanical complications of these aneurysms. In our patient it was unusual to see localized CAD and an aneurysm limited to one coronary artery territory when atherosclerotic CAAs usually affect more than one artery. Conclusion: Since pathophysiology of CAA is not well understood and there are no obvious society guidelines regarding their management, therefore, it becomes important to tailor treatment based on the location and size of the CAA, underlying risk factors and the clinical presentation.

A series of mono-, di-, and poly(platina-ynes) incorporating stilbene spacer units with the formulae trans-[R–CC–Pt(PBu3)2-CC–R] (R = (E)-1,2-diphenylethene), trans-[(Ph)-(Et3P)2PtCC–R–CCPt(PEt3)2(Ph)] (R = (E)-1,2-diphenylethene), and trans-[–(PnBu3)2PtCC–R–CC–]n (R = (E)-1,2-diphenylethene), respectively, have been synthesized and characterized to explore the effects of ligand topology on the photoisomerization and photophysical properties of these materials. The structural and photophysical properties of the complexes have been investigated and compared with those of the previously reported mono-, di- and poly(platina-ynes) incorporating azobenzene spacers. We found that the organometallic species 1M, 2M and 1P undergo topology-dependent reversible trans-to-cis photoisomerization in CH2Cl2 solution. Computational modelling supported the experimental findings.

Pt(II) di-ynes and poly-ynes incorporating 5,5’- and 6,6’-disubstituted 2,2’-bipyridines were prepared following conventional Sonogashira and Hagihara dehydrohalogenation reaction protocols. Using Pt(II) dimers and polymers as a rigid-rod backbone, four new hetero-bimetallic compounds incorporating Re(CO)3Cl as a pendant functionality in the 2,2’-bipyridine core were obtained. The new hetero-bimetallic Pt-Re compounds were characterized by analytical and spectroscopic techniques. The solid state structures of a Re(I)-coordinated diterminal alkynyl ligand and a representative model compound were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Detailed photo-physical characterization of the hetero-bimetallic Pt(II) di-ynes and poly-ynes was carried out. We find that the incorporation of the Re(CO)3Cl pendant functionality in the 2,2’-bipyridine-containing main-chain Pt(II) di-ynes and poly-ynes has a synergistic effect on the optical properties, red shifting the absorption profile and introducing strong long-wavelength absorptions. The Re(I) moiety also introduces strong emission into the monomeric Pt(II) di-yne compounds, whereas this is suppressed in the poly-ynes. The extent of the synergy depends on the topology of the ligands. Computational modelling was performed to compare the energetic stabilities of the positional isomers and to understand the microscopic origin of the major optical absorptions. We find that 5,5’-disubstituted 2,2’-bipyridine systems are better candidates in terms of yield, photophysical properties and stability than their 6,6’-substituted counterparts. Overall, this work provides an additional synthetic route to control the photo-physical properties of metalla-ynes for a variety of optoelectronic applications.

Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) after cardiac surgery remains a highly prevalent and costly condition that negatively impacts patient quality of life and survival. Numerous retrospective studies, meta-analysis, and review papers have been reported identifying POAF risk based on patients' risk factors and clinical biomarkers. In this narrative review, the authors report significant variations among selected pre- and perioperative biomarkers used to predict POAF incidence in patients without a history of atrial fibrillation (AF). POAF prediction based on B-type natriuretic peptide, N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide, C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, creatinine, and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 differs significantly among different studies, thereby limiting their clinical utility to predict POAF risk with high accuracy. Conversely, soluble vascular endothelial cells adhesion molecule-1, soluble CD40 ligand, Galectin-3, and aldosterone show promise for better POAF prediction. However, the current datasets for these selected biomarkers are not of sufficient size to validate the broad clinical application specifically for patients with no prior history of AF.

Utah Electrode Arrays (UEAs) have previously been characterized and implanted for neural recordings and stimulation at relatively low current levels. This proof-of-concept study investigated the applicability of UEAs in sub-surface cardiac pacing, for the first time, particularly to selectively sense and pace the His-Bundle (HB). HB pacing produces synchronous ventricular depolarization and improved cardiac function. Modified UEAs with sputtered iridium oxide film (SIROF) tips (100 – 150 μm) were characterized for SIROF delamination using an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and voltage transient (VT) techniques at various current levels of up to 8 mA for a biphasic pulse with 1 ms duration per phase at 4 Hz. Our results indicate that at a short pacing duration of 20 s with current levels of up to 4 mA, the SIROF exhibited a strong charge-transfer performance. For the longer pacing duration (6 min), SIROF demonstrated its holding capacity at all current levels except for ≥2 mA when delamination commenced for the time exceeded 4 min (EIS) and 2 min (VT). UEAs were inserted in isolated, perfused goat hearts to record the HB electrograms in real-time. Both stimulated and unstimulated electrodes were characterized for SIROF delamination before, during and after in vivo work. Our findings indicate that UEA was stable during the heart’s contraction and relaxation phase. Further, at a short pacing duration with current levels of up to 4 mA, UEA demonstrated high selectively in sensing the HB. This proof-of-concept work demonstrates the potential applicability of UEAs in cardiac applications.

Aims Despite recent advances in guideline‐directed therapy, rehospitalization rates for acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) remain high. Recently published studies demonstrated the emerging role of hypochloraemia as a predictor of poor outcomes in patients with ADHF. This study sought to determine the correlation between low serum chloride and 30 day hospital readmission in patients with ADHF. Methods and results We retrospectively reviewed electronic medical records of 1504 patients who were admitted to one 700 bed US tertiary care centre with the diagnosis of ADHF between June 2013 and December 2014. Of the 1504 reviewed records, 1241 were selected for further analysis. Hypochloraemia (either on admission or at discharge) was identified in 289 patients (23.3%) and was associated with significantly higher 30 day hospital readmission rate or death (42.2% vs. 33.7%, P = 0.008). This association persisted in multivariate analysis when controlling for serum sodium, weight loss, diuretic dose, adjunct thiazide use, serum blood urea nitrogen, and BNP levels (OR: 1.35, 95% CI: 1.02–1.77, P = 0.033); however, the predictive value of the overall model was low (Naglkerke R 2 = 0.040). Hypochloraemia was also found to be associated with increased 12 month mortality in our cohort (31.4% vs. 20.2%, P = 0.015) that correlates with the results of previously published studies. Conclusions Low serum chloride measured in patients admitted for ADHF is independently but weakly associated with increased 30 day readmission rate and demonstrated low predictive value as a potential biomarker in this cohort.

Background The His–Purkinje (HP) system provides a pathway for the time-synchronous contraction of the heart. His bundle (HB) of the HP system is gaining relevance as a pacing site for treating non-reversible bradyarrhythmia despite limited availability of tools to identify the HB. In this paper, we describe a real-time stimulation and recording system (rt-SRS) to investigate using multi-electrode techniques to identify and selectively pace the HB. The rt-SRS can not only be used in sinus rhythm, but also during ventricular fibrillation (VF). The rt-SRS will also help investigate the so far unknown causal effects of selectively pacing the HB during VF. Methods The rt-SRS consists of preamplifiers, data acquisition cards interfaced with a real-time controller, a current source, and current routing switches on a remote computer, which may be interrupted to stimulate using a host machine. The remote computer hosts a series of algorithms designed to aid in identifying electrodes directly over the HB, to accurately detect activation rates without over-picking, and to deliver stimulation pulses. The performance of the rt-SRS was demonstrated in seven isolated, perfused rabbit hearts. Results The rt-SRS can visualize up to 96 channels of raw data, and spatial derivative data at 6.25-kHz sampling rate with an input-referred noise of 100 µV. The rt-SRS can send up to ± 150 V of stimuli pulses to any of the 96 channels. In the rabbit experiments, HB activations were detected in 18 ± 6.8% of the 64 electrodes used during VF. Conclusions The rt-SRS is capable of measuring and responding to cardiac electrophysiological phenomena in real-time with precisely timed and placed electrical stimuli. This rt-SRS was shown to be an effective research tool by successfully detecting and quantifying HB activations and delivering stimulation pulses to selected electrodes in real-time.

A polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB)-degrading actinomycete, strain SFB5AT, was identified as a species of Streptomyces based on its membrane fatty acid profile and the presence of ll-diaminopimelic acid in the cell wall. It formed sporulating mycelia on most agar media, but flat or wrinkled, moist colonies on trypticase soy agar. Spores were smooth, cylindrical, and borne on long, straight to flexuous chains. It produced a light brown diffusible pigment, but not melanin. Comparison of genomic digital DNA–DNA hybridization (dDDH) and average nucleotide identity (ANI) values indicated that strain SFB5AT was related to Streptomyces litmocidini JCM 4394T, Streptomyces vietnamensis GIMV4.0001T, Streptomyces nashvillensis JCM 4498T and Streptomyces tanashiensis JCM 4086T, plus 11 other species. However, the dDDH and ANI values were well below the species differentiation thresholds of T differed from the other species in pigmentation and its ability to catabolize arabinose. Strain SFB5AT and 11 of its 15 closest relatives degraded PHB and have genes for extracellular, short-chain-length denatured polyhydroxyalkanoate depolymerases. These enzymes from strain SFB5AT and its closest relatives had a type 1 catalytic domain structure, while those from other relatives had a type 2 structure, which differs from type one in the position of a consensus histidine in the active site. Thus, phenotypic and genotypic differences suggest that strain SFB5AT represents a new species of Streptomyces, for which we propose the name Streptomyces nymphaeiformis sp. nov. The type strain is SFB5AT (=NRRL B-65520T=DSM 112030T).
