Abstract The green synthesis of Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) has shown numerous advantages over conventional physical and chemical synthesis methods as these methods non-ecofriendly and uses toxic chemicals and complicated equipments. In present study, Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) were created using simple, sustainable, eco-friendly and green chemistry protocol. The roots of novel medicinal plant Sageretia thea was used as a bio-template for the preparation of IONPs. Further, the synthesis of IONPs was confirmed using different analytical tools like UV-Vis, FT-IR, XRD, EDX, and SEM. The average sizes of (NPs) were found to be 16.04 nm. Further, asynthesized IONPs were evaluated for several biological potentials including antibacterial, antifungal Anti-radical potentials (DPPH) and cytotoxicity assays. Antibacterial potencies were investigated using bacterial strains (in the concentration range of 1000–31.25 µg/mL) revealing significant antibacterial potentials. ABA and SAU was reported to be least susceptible while KPN was observed to be most susceptible strain in bactericidal studies. Further, different fungal strains were used to investigate the antifungal potentials of IONPs (in the concentration range of 1000–31.25 µg/mL) and revealed strong antifungal potencies against different pathogenic strains. Furthermore, MRA, FA and ANI were most susceptible and ABA was least susceptible in fungicidal examination. Significant cytotoxicity potential was examined using brine shrimps cytotoxicity assay, thus revealing the cytotoxic potential of asynthesized IONPs. The IC50 for S. thea based IONPs was recorded as 33.85 µg/mL. Strong anti-radical potentials (DPPH) assay was performed to evaluate the ROS scavenging potential of S.T@IONPs. The highest scavenging potential was noted as 78.06%, TRP as 81.92% and TAC as 84% on maximum concentration of 200 µg/mL. In summary, our experimental results concluded, that asynthesized IONPs have strong antibacterial, antifungal, DPPH scavenging and cytotoxic potentials and can be used in different biological applications. In nutshell, our as-prepared nanoparticles have shown potential bioactivities and we recommend, different other in vitro and in vivo biological and bioactivities to further analyze the biological potentials.

Abstract Iron (Fe) deficiency in calcareous soils is a significant agricultural challenge, affecting crop productivity and nutritional quality. This study aimed to isolate, characterize, and evaluate Fe solubilizing rhizobacterial isolates from maize rhizosphere in calcareous soils as potential biofertilizers. Forty bacterial isolates coded as SG1, SG2, …, SG40 were isolated and screened for siderophore production, with ten showing significant Fe solubilizing capabilities. These isolates were further assessed for phosphate solubilization and exopolysaccharides production. The selected bacterial isolates were also screened under axenic conditions for their ability to improve maize growth. The isolates SG8, SG13, SG24, SG30 and SG33 significantly enhanced growth parameters of maize. Notably, SG30 showed highest increment in shoot length (58%), root length (54%), root fresh and dry biomass (67% and 76%), SPAD value (67%), relative water contents (69%), root surface area (61%), and Fe concentration in shoots (79%) as compared to control. The biochemical characterization of these strains showed that all these strains have capability to solubilize insoluble phosphorus, produce indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), and ammonia with catalase, urease and protease activity. Molecular identification through 16s rRNA gene sequencing confirmed high similarity (99.7–100%) of the selected isolates to various Bacillus species, including B. pyramidoids, B. firmicutes, and B. cereus. The study provides a strong base for developing eco-friendly, cost-effective biofertilizers to address Fe deficiency in crops and promote sustainable agriculture.

Abstract Lahore is among the most important historical cities in Pakistan, and many cultural heritage structures, such as Shalamar Gardens and Lahore Fort, which are recognised as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, are located there. The rapid increase in transit operations and infrastructure development in Lahore can increase the vulnerability of nearby heritage structures to ground-borne vibrations. In this study, a vibration vulnerability assessment of the heritage structures present in Lahore was performed with the help of the framework provided by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), USA. A remote survey was carried out to gather valuable information regarding the distance between the heritage structures and potential vibrational sources, as well as the latitude and longitude of the heritage structures, via the web-based mapping tool Google Earth. A vibration vulnerability map of heritage structures was developed on the basis of a vibration vulnerability assessment to make it convenient for policymakers to visualise the present state of heritage structures with respect to vibration vulnerability. The performed vibration vulnerability assessment was validated by experimentally measuring vibrations at the Buddha’s Tomb (Buddha Ka Awa) heritage structure. The study revealed that 17% of the heritage structures present in Lahore are vulnerable to vibrations at present, with potential vibrational sources such as road traffic, metro trains, and rail traffic. The vibration vulnerability assessment revealed that 72% of the vibrationally vulnerable heritage structures in Lahore are most influenced by vibrations from road traffic. The results of this study can aid policymakers in creating intervention packages for vibrationally vulnerable heritage structures in Lahore in relation to their respective needs, which will make it possible to achieve the sustainable conservation of heritage structures.

Abstract Gladiolus, a widely cultivated cut flower known for its aesthetically pleasing multicoloured spikes, has earned significant commercial popularity. A comprehensive understanding of the rhizosphere bacterial community associated with gladiolus is imperative for revealing its potential benefits. Molecular characterization is considered an effective method to gain insights into the structural and functional aspects of microbial populations. The soil characteristics and bacterial communities in the rhizosphere are typically influenced by quorum sensing (QS) and quorum quenching (QQ) mechanisms. This study aims to explore the niceties and diversity of rhizospheric bacterial populations linked with gladiolus corms, with a specific focus on understanding the dynamics of QS and QQ mechanisms in their complex interactions. The isolation of bacterial strains was achieved through the serial dilution method on nutrient agar (NA) media. The identification of the isolates was accomplished by amplifying 16 S rRNA gene sequences via polymerase chain reaction (PCR) via the use of universal primers. Sequence analysis was conducted via BLAST on the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database. The characteristics of the isolated bacteria were elucidated via biosensors. This study identified three QS strains and five QQ strains. A consortium of quenchers was formulated utilizing five strains that demonstrated efficacy in mitigating the impact of disease on gladiolus and fostering growth. Among the three treatments—Scale, Descale, and Descale and Cut Half (DSC)—the DSC treatment emerged as the most effective. This treatment exhibited a broader range of variation in biological parameters over time, aligning with prevailing trends in the local market.

Abstract The Asteraceae family is a prominent group of flowering plants found across the globe, with the exception of Antarctica. The Asteraceae family is a largest flowering family pivotal group in plant evolution and diversification. Despite its importance, the genetic diversity within this family remains understudied. We focused on the rps-11 gene, a chloroplast marker previously utilized in phylogenetic studies, to investigate its potential in resolving Asteraceae relationships. The focus was on examining genetic diversity within sixteen specifically chosen species from the Asteraceae family. This assessment was based on an analysis of a chloroplast gene responsible for encoding the ribosomal protein of the smaller subunit 11 (rps 11). Nearly 417 bp of rps 11 gene was amplified, sequenced, computationally translated into amino acid sequence and the data was used for phylogenetic analysis as well as for rps 11 protein structure predictions. Based on nucleotide and amino acid sequences phylograms were drawn with the help of Molecular Evolutionary Genetic Analysis (MEGA 6), which exhibited clear genetic relationship among species under investigation. The observed genetic distance was 0.02 for Maximum likelihood tree based on nucleotide sequences whereas it was 0.05 for phylogram based on amino acid sequences. These values revealed that amino acid-based tree has demonstrated greater diversity among selected species in comparison to nucleotides-based tree. On the basis of pair wise distance calculations, genetic divergence values were found within the range of 0.015–0.309. Moreover, 3D protein modeling for rps 11 protein of sixteen selected species was also carried out by iterative threading assembly refinement (I-Tasser) software. The models exhibiting the highest C-score were picked with satisfactory plot statistics (> 90%) and structurally validated by PROCHECK. Furthermore, Ramachandran plots displayed that the rps 11 protein structures of Tagetes minuta, Xanthium strumarium, Lactuca sativa and Chrysanthemum indicum have best feature models with > 90% of residues in the allowed region and ≤ 2% in the disallowed region. The research is not enough to stand alone to validate the viability of the rps11 gene as a prospective contender for phylogenetic analysis. İn future we will focus on the maximum genetic diversity theory for phylogenetic analysis of this family.

Abstract Timely and effective interventions after tracheal mucosal injury are lack in clinical practices, which elevate the risks of airway infection, tracheal cartilage deterioration, and even asphyxiated death. Herein, we proposed a biomaterial-based strategy for the repair of injured tracheal mucosal based on a copper hydrogen phosphate nanosheets (CuHP NSs) functionalized commercial hydrogel (polyethylene glycol disuccinimidyl succinate-human serum albumin, PH). Such CuHP/PH hydrogel achieved favorable injectability, stable gelation, and excellent adhesiveness within the tracheal lumen. Moreover, CuHP NSs within the CuHP/PH hydrogel effectively stimulate the proliferation and migration of endothelial/epithelial cells, enhancing angiogenesis and demonstrating excellent tissue regenerative potential. Additionally, it exhibited significant inhibitory effects on both bacteria and bacterial biofilms. More importantly, when injected injured site of tracheal mucosa under fiberoptic bronchoscopy guidance, our results demonstrated CuHP/PH hydrogel adhered tightly to the tracheal mucosa. The therapeutic effects of the CuHP/PH hydrogel were further confirmed, which significantly improved survival rates, vascular and mucosal regeneration, reduced occurrences of intraluminal infections, tracheal stenosis, and cartilage damage complications. This research presents an initial proposition outlining a strategy employing biomaterials to mitigate tracheal mucosal injury, offering novel perspectives on the treatment of mucosal injuries and other tracheal diseases.

Abstract The integration of Fintech is revolutionizing global financial engagement, moving away from traditional payment systems. This study, thus, explores the interaction between communication dynamics, Fintech use, intentions, cashless transactions adoption, financial literacy, personal innovativeness, and socioeconomic development in Pakistan. The study employs a dual methodology, encompassing “PLS-SEM and Probit Model alongside Propensity Score Matching technique.” The survey targeted small business owners and individuals involved in informal sectors, encompassing roles such as fruit and vegetable vendors, small shop owners, taxi drivers, and auto rickshaw operators. A total of 394 responses were analyzed. The findings highlight the facilitating role of individuals’ intentions to use cashless transactions, acting as a mediator through which Fintech use fosters actual behavior. Moreover, the study finds financial literacy and personal innovativeness as critical moderating factors. Adopting cashless transactions emerges as a pathway to enhanced financial inclusion, particularly impactful for small business owners. The achieved financial inclusion has the potential for profound financial inclusion implications, as evidenced by its positive effects on sustainable livelihoods, living conditions, and social development among small business owners and individuals operating within the informal sector.

Abstract Despite the rapid advancements in optimization algorithms for economical reinforced concrete (RC) structures, their application to RC slabs has been significantly limited. The primary constraint is slab depth, governed only by deflection control criteria, which impedes further depth reduction—a key factor in cost optimization. The deflection check relies solely on one design parameter—span length, which is often fixed. This constraint limits the effectiveness of even advanced algorithms, which have consistently failed to deliver substantial cost savings in slab design. To address this issue, this study presents a detailed parametric investigation of three key cost-reducing factors in RC one-way slabs: steel strength, concrete strength, and reinforcing bar sizes, in accordance with the ACI 318–19 code. By bypassing algorithmic constraints, the study formulates optimal design strategies through extensive manual design iterations, providing novel trend-based solutions for cost-effective slab design. The findings indicate that for lower live loads, grade 280 steel offers a 20–30% cost reduction compared to higher-grade steel, despite the latter's strength advantage. However, for higher loads, grade 420 or 500 is recommended. Additionally, optimal bar sizes and concrete strengths are recommended for varying load conditions, offering practical design strategies. This approach provides designers with actionable insights to achieve cost-efficient designs without relying on traditional optimization algorithms.

Abstract Objectives The main objective of the study was to explore the perspectives of healthcare professionals (HCPs) regarding artificial intelligence (AI) and to identify challenges in its incorporation in the healthcare sector of Pakistan. Methods A qualitative exploratory study design was adopted. The study was conducted from January 15th to February 29th, 2024, and HCPs (doctors, pharmacists and nurses) from two tertiary care teaching hospitals in southern Punjab, Pakistan were taken as the study population. The interviews were conducted with the help of a semi structured interview schema. A thematic approach was adopted to analyse the data. Results Out of 40 HCPs approached, 25 participated in the study with a response rate of 62%. The participants included in the study were doctors (14), pharmacists (6) and nurses (5). The participants had limited knowledge regarding AI and its basics. However, they showed positive perceptions about its incorporation. They believed that many of the problems faced by the healthcare sector of Pakistan can be minimized by AI incorporation. They believed that AI can boost up the efficiency of healthcare providers, reduce their workload, save time and minimize medical errors. Four main themes with multiple subthemes were identified: (1) Cognizance of AI, (2) Acceptability of AI among HCPs and training requirements for effective incorporation, (3) Merits and Demerits of AI, and (4) Challenges in incorporation of AI with proposed solutions. Conclusion HCPs showed a willingness to embrace AI incorporation and believed that it may bring numerous benefits to the health system. Policymakers should take necessary steps to ensure AI incorporation in our healthcare sector.

Abstract The efficacy of herbal supplements in mitigating heavy metals (HMs) toxicity was investigated using a widely grown fish, the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The experiment was conducted over two phases: during the stress phase, the experimental fishes were exposed to sub-lethal concentrations of HMs, including lead, cadmium, zinc, and copper for 15 days; following which during the feeding phase, herbal supplements were given for 70 days to ameliorate their effects. Seven groups were established: the control negative group (CON−ve), control positive group (CON+ve, without any treatment), and five groups with supplementation of 1% turmeric (TUR), cinnamon (CIN), ginger (GIN), garlic (GAR), and their mixture (MIX), respectively. Abstract Green nanotechnology has significant potential for use in agriculture particularly due to their antifungal properties, ability to control fungal diseases and reduce the reliance on chemical fungicides. Biotic stresses in agriculture have caused widespread damage worldwide, and green NPs provided eco-friendly alternatives to traditional chemical treatments, which are frequently toxic and harmful to the ecosystem. Green NPs could become an important tool in modern agricultural practices and environmental remediation if appropriate research is conducted to identify cost-effective production methods as well as safe and sustainable applications. In order to understand the potential of green NPs for sustainable agriculture and identify potential risks, research is ongoing into the effectiveness in agriculture sectors. Research update on green NPs is presented in this paper using data published on science direct over the last 15 to 20 years to clarify and understand the antifungal mechanisms of green metallic NPs, carbon and graphene nanotubes, nanocomposites as well as other type of nanomaterials. These green NPs are found to be more effective against pathogens on crops and humans than conventional fungicide approaches. They are very effective against fungi that affect cereal crops, including Fusarium oxysporum, Botrytis cinerea, and Candida species, etc. The green NPs developed using green synthesis methods are both cost-effective and environmentally friendly. Moreover, research is also required to identify the best methods for applying green NPs for crop production and sustainable agriculture. Furthermore, research should be undertaken to establish the most cost-effective methods of making and deploying green nanoparticles at a large field size study where there is fungal attack that diminishes agricultural output and affects global crop production. Abstract Drought poses a significant ecological threat that limits the production of crops worldwide. The objective of this study to examine the impact of soil applied biochar (BC) and peatmoss (PM) on the morpho-biochemical and quality traits of tobacco plants under drought conditions. In the present experiment work, a pot trial was conducted with two levels of drought severity (~ well-watered 75 ± 5% field capacity) and severe drought stress (~ 35 ± 5% field capacity), two levels of peatmoss (PM) @ 5% [PM+ (with peatmoss) and PM- (without peatmoss)] and three levels of rice straw biochar (BC0 = no biochar; BC1 = 150 mg kg− 1; and BC2 = 300 mg kg− 1 of soil) in tobacco plants. The results indicate that drought conditions significantly impacted the performance of tobacco plants. However, the combined approach of BC and PM significantly improved the growth, biomass, and total chlorophyll content (27.94%) and carotenoids (32.00%) of tobacco. This study further revealed that the drought conditions decreased the production of lipid peroxidation and proline accumulation. But the synergistic approach of BC and PM application increased soluble sugars (17.63 and 12.20%), soluble protein (31.16 and 15.88%), decreased the proline accumulation (13.92 and 9.03%), and MDA content (16.40 and 8.62%) under control and drought stressed conditions, respectively. Furthermore, the combined approach of BC and PM also improved the leaf potassium content (19.02%) by limiting the chloride ions (33.33%) under drought stressed conditions. Altogether, the balanced application of PM and BC has significant potential as an effective approach and sustainable method to increase the tolerance of tobacco plants subjected to drought conditions. This research uniquely highlights the combined potential of PM and BC as an eco-friendly strategy to enhance plant resilience under drought conditions, offering new insights into sustainable agricultural practices.

Abstract Zinc oxide nanoparticles have wide range biological, biomedical and environmental applications. However, traditional nanofabrication of ZnONPs uses various toxic chemicals and organic solvents which limit their bio-applications. To overcome this hurdle, Bauhinia variegata derived buds extract was utilized to fabricate ZnONPs. The greenly generated ZnONPs were successfully prepared and extensively characterized using different analytical tools and the average crystalline size was calculated as 25.47 nm. Further, bioengineered ZnONPs were explored for multiple biological activities that revealed excellent therapeutic potentials. The antibacterial potential was determined using different bacterial strains. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MIC: 137.5 µg/mL) was reported to be the most resistant variant while Bacillus subtilis (MIC: 34.38 µg/mL) was observed to be most susceptible bacterial strain. DPPH radical scavenging potential was measured to determine the antioxidant capacity of ZnONPs and the highest scavenging potential was observed as 82% at highest of 300 µg/mL. The fungicidal effect of green ZnONPs in comparison with Amphotericin B was assessed against five selected pathogenic fungal strains. The results revealed, Fusarium solani (MIC: 46.875 µg/mL) was least resistant and Aspergillus flavus (MIC: 187.5 µg/mL) was most resistant in fungicidal examination. Cytotoxicity potential of B.V@ZnONPs was analyzed against newly hatched nauplii of brine shrimps. The results for greenly produced ZnONPs was recorded as 39.78 µg/mL while 3.006 µg/mL was reported for positive control vincristine sulphate. The results confirmed the category of general cytotoxic for greenly synthesized nano sized B.V@ZnONPs.

Abstract Wheat is an important staple crop not only in Pakistan but all over the globe. Although the area dedicated to wheat cultivation expands annually, the quantity of wheat harvested is declining due to various biotic and abiotic factors. Global wheat production and output have suffered as a result of the drought, which is largely driven by a lack of water and environmental factors. Organic fertilizers have been shown to reduce the severity of drought. The current research was conducted in semi-arid climates to mitigate the negative effects of drought on wheat during its critical tillering (DTS), flowering (DFS), and grain filling (DGFS) stages through the application of three different abscisic acid treatments: ABA0 (0 mgL−1) control, ABA1 (100 mgL−1) and ABA2 (200 mgL−1). Wheat growth and yield characteristics were severely harmed by drought stress across all critical development stages, with the DGFS stage being particularly vulnerable and leading to a considerable loss in yield. Plant height was increased by 24.25%, the number of fertile tillers by 25.66%, spike length by 17.24%, the number of spikelets per spike by 16.68%, grain count per spike by 11.98%, thousand-grain weight by 14.34%, grain yield by 26.93% and biological yield by 14.55% when abscisic acid (ABA) was applied instead of the control treatment. Moreover, ABA2 increased the more physiological indices (water use efficiency (36.12%), stomatal conductance (44.23%), chlorophyll a (24.5%), chlorophyll b (29.8%), transpiration rate (23.03%), photosynthetic rate (24.84%), electrolyte leakage (− 38.76%) hydrogen peroxide (− 18.09%) superoxide dismutase (15.3%), catalase (20.8%), peroxidase (− 18.09%), and malondialdehyde (− 13.7%)) of drought-stressed wheat as compared to other treatments. In the case of N, P, and K contents in grain were maximally improved with the application of ABA2. Through the use of principal component analysis, we were able to correlate our results across scales and provide an explanation for the observed effects of ABA on wheat growth and production under arid conditions. Overall, ABA application at a rate of 200 mgL−1 is an effective technique to boost wheat grain output by mitigating the negative effects of drought stress.

Abstract Background Patients perceive effective patient-doctor communication as an important metric when evaluating their satisfaction with health systems. Hence, optimal patient-physician communication is fundamental for quality healthcare. High-income countries (HICs) have extensively studied patient-resident communication. However, there is a dearth of similar studies in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Therefore, we aimed to explore the current state of and barriers to practicing good patient-resident communication and explore possible solutions to mitigate these challenges at one of the largest Academic Medical Centers in an LMIC. Methods This study employed an exploratory qualitative study design and was conducted at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Pakistan. Through purposive maximum variation sampling, 60 healthcare workers from diverse cohorts, including attendings, fellows, residents, and medical students, participated in eight focus group discussions. Results We identified three key themes from the data: Status-quo of residents’ communication skills and learning (Poor verbal and non-verbal communication, inadequate training programs, and variable sources of learning), Barriers to effective communication (Institutional barriers such as lack of designated counselling spaces, lack of resident insight regarding effective communication and deficits in intra-team communication), and the need for developing a communication skills curriculum (Design, implementation and scaling to other cohorts of healthcare workers). Conclusions Findings from this study show that multifaceted factors are responsible for inadequate patient resident-physician communication, highlighting the need for and importance of developing a formal communication skills training curriculum for residents. These insights can be used to create standardized training for equipping residents with adequate skills for effectively communicating with patients which can improve healthcare service delivery and patient outcomes.

Abstract In the current arena, new-generation functional nanomaterials are the key players for smart solutions and applications including environmental decontamination of pollutants. Among the plethora of new-generation nanomaterials, graphene-based nanomaterials and nanocomposites are in the driving seat surpassing their counterparts due to their unique physicochemical characteristics and superior surface chemistry. The purpose of the present research was to synthesize and characterize magnetite iron oxide/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites (FeNPs/rGO) via a green approach and test its application in the degradation of methylene blue. The modified Hummer's protocol was adopted to synthesize graphene oxide (GO) through a chemical exfoliation approach using a graphitic route. Leaf extract of Azadirachta indica was used as a green reducing agent to reduce GO into reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Then, using the green deposition approach and Azadirachta indica leaf extract, a nanocomposite comprising magnetite iron oxides and reduced graphene oxide i.e., FeNPs/rGO was synthesized. During the synthesis of functionalized FeNPs/rGO, Azadirachta indica leaf extract acted as a reducing, capping, and stabilizing agent. The final synthesized materials were characterized and analyzed using an array of techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction analysis, and UV–visible spectrophotometry. The UV–visible spectrum was used to evaluate the optical characteristics and band gap. Using the FT-IR spectrum, functional groupings were identified in the synthesized graphene-based nanomaterials and nanocomposites. The morphology and elemental analysis of nanomaterials and nanocomposites synthesized via the green deposition process were investigated using SEM–EDX. The GO, rGO, FeNPs, and FeNPs/rGO showed maximum absorption at 232, 265, 395, and 405 nm, respectively. Abstract The continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) system grapples with challenges such as non-uniform transverse crack patterns and the need for substantial reinforcement. Field research on the Belgian CRCP sections along motorway E313 indicates that active cracking induced by partial surface saw-cuts consistently leads to transverse crack patterns. This study introduces an innovative modification to the CRCP: the actively reinforced concrete pavement design (ARCP). The ARCP leverages partial surface saw-cuts to reduce reinforcement needs by replacing continuous-length steel bars with partial-length counterparts. The main objective of the present study is to develop a 3D finite element (FE) model capturing the active cracking behavior of ARCP under realistic external temperature variations. Comparative analysis with CRCP considers early-age crack patterns, crack strain development, and the distribution of maximum steel stress for different steel ratios (0.67%, 0.75%, and 0.85%). FE simulation results align with field data, indicating that ARCP exhibits similar early-age cracking behavior to CRCP but with a significant 24 to 42% reduction in total reinforcement. This innovation presents a promising avenue for addressing CRCP challenges while optimizing material usage in pavement construction.

In recent years, there has been increased interest in hydrogen storage due to the numerous advantages hydrogen offers as an energy source. This study explores the structural, hydrogen storage, electronic, elastic, mechanical, and optical properties of Ca1-xTixFeH3 through DFT. After Ti substitution in the host material, structure phase transformation occurs: cubic → pseudo-cubic → cubic. Study compounds are thermodynamically stable and experimentally synthesizable according to the calculated negative formation energies. Gravimetric hydrogen storage capacities for different concentrations of Ti (x = 0, 0.11, 0.33, 0.55, 1) were calculated as 2.963, 2.938, 2.843, and 2.753 wt%, respectively. The investigation focuses on understanding the material's BS, Fermi level, and DOS, elucidating its metallic characteristics, and non-zero DOS at the Fermi level contributing to electrical and thermal conductivity. Elemental partial density of states reveals hybridization effects with Ti doping, affecting the valence band's atomic contributions. Using cubic symmetry, C11, C12, and C14 elastic constants were used to describe mechanical characteristics, and the Born criteria were met. Thus, mechanical stability was demonstrated for these compounds. Optical analyses exhibit changes concerning Ti concentrations and energy levels, including absorption spectra, conductivity, reflectivity, dielectric function, refractive index, energy loss function, and extinction coefficient. These findings shed light on the material's response to incident radiation and potential applications in hydrogen storage and optoelectronic devices.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effects of variable durations of loud noise stress on the histomorphology of the thyroid gland in adult rats. METHODS: This laboratory-based experimental study was conducted at the Anatomy Department, Army Medical College/National University of Medical Sciences, Rawalpindi, Pakistan, from January to December 2020. Thirty Sprague Dawley rats were divided into three groups: Control group A (no noise exposure), experimental group B (100 dB noise for 4 hours daily), and experimental group C (100 dB noise for 6 hours daily) for four months. At the end of the experiment, the rats were weighed, euthanized, and their thyroid glands removed. The glands were analyzed microscopically after Haematoxylin and Eosin staining, measuring the diameter and epithelial height of thyroid follicles. RESULTS: All rats remained healthy with no statistically significant differences in weight gain between the groups. With increasing energy demand and depletion of fossil fuel resources, it is pertinent to explore the renewable and eco-friendly energy resource to meet global energy demand. Recently, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have emerged as plausible candidates in the field of photovoltaics and considered as potential contender of silicon solar cells in the photovoltaic market owing to their superior optoelectronic properties, low-cost and high absorption coefficients. Despite intensive research, PSCs still suffer from efficiency, stability, and reproducibility issues. To address the concern, the charge transport material (CTM) particularly the electron transport materials (ETM) can play significant role in the development of efficient and stable perovskite devices. In the proposed research, we synthesized GO-Ag-TiO2 ternary nanocomposite by facile hydrothermal approach as a potential electron transport layer (ETL) in a regular planar configuration-based PSC. The as synthesized sample was examined for morphological, structural, and optical properties using XRD, and UV-Vis spectroscopic techniques. XRD analysis confirmed the high crystallinity of prepared sample with no peak of impurity. The optimized GO-Ag-TiO2 ETL exhibited superior PCE of 8.72% with Jsc of 14.98 mA.cm-2 ,Voc of 0.99 V, and a fill factor of 58.83%. Furthermore, the efficiency enhancement in comparison with reference device is observed which confirms the potential role of doped materials in enhancing photovoltaic performance by facilitating efficient charge transport and reduced recombination. Our research suggests a facile route to synthesize a low-cost ETM beneficial for the commercialization of future perovskite devices.

Abstract Oreochromis niloticus fingerlings (5.15 ± 0.02 g; n = 315) were fed with different types of biochar (BC)-supplemented sunflower meal-based (SFM) diet to investigate the effects of various BC inclusions on their nutritional digestibility, body composition, hematology and mineral status for 60 days. Seven different diets were formulated based on the SFM based diet: one was a control (TD-I, CON) and the other six diets were supplemented with 2% BC derived from different sources. These BCs were derived from the following: cotton stick (CSBC, TD-II), wheat straw (WSBC, TD-III), corn cob (CCBC, TD-IV), house waste (HWBC, TD-V), grass waste (GWBC, TD-VI), and green waste (GwBC, TD-VII) biochar. Abstract Biochar (BC) is an organic compound formed by the pyrolysis of organic wastes. Application of BCs as soil amendments has many benefits including carbon sequestration, enhanced soil fertility and sustainable agriculture production. In the present study, we acidified the different BCs prepared from rice straw, rice husk, wheat straw, cotton stalk, poultry manure, sugarcane press mud and vegetable waste; following which, we applied them in a series of pot experiments. Comparisons were made between acidified and non- acidified BCs for their effects on seed germination, soil properties (EC, pH) nutrient contents (P, K, Na) and organic matter. The treatments comprised of a control, and all above-described BCs (acidified as well as non-acidified) applied to soil at the rate of 1% (w/w). The maize crop was selected as a test crop. The results showed that acidified poultry manure BC significantly improved germination percentage, shoot length, and biomass of maize seedlings as compared to other BCs and their respective control plants. However, acidified BCs caused a significant decrease in nutrient contents (P, K, Na) of soil,maize seedlings, and the soil organic matter contents as compared to non- acidified BCs. But when compared with control treatments, all BCs treatments (acidified and non-acidified) delivered higher levels of nutrients and organic matter contents. It was concluded that none of the BCs (acidified and non-acidified) had caused negative effect on soil conditions and growth of maize. In addition, the acidification of BC prior to its application to alkaline soils might had altered soil chemistry and delivered better maize growth. Moving forward, more research is needed to understand the long-term effects of modified BCs on nutrient dynamics in different soils. In addition, the possible effects of BC application timings, application rates, particle size, and crop species have to be evaluated systemtically.

Abstract Soil salinity is a significant challenge in agriculture, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions such as Pakistan, leading to soil degradation and reduced crop yields. The present study assessed the impact of different salinity levels (0, 25, and 50 mmol NaCl) and biochar treatments (control, wheat-straw biochar, rice-husk biochar, and sawdust biochar applied @ 1% w/w) on the germination and growth performance of wheat. Two experiments: a germination study and a pot experiment (grown up to maturity), were performed. The results showed that NaCl-stress negatively impacted the germination parameters, grain, and straw yield, and agronomic and soil parameters. Biochar treatments restored these parameters compared to control (no biochar), but the effects were inconsistent across NaCl levels. Among the different biochars, wheat-straw biochar performed better than rice-husk and sawdust-derived biochar regarding germination and agronomic parameters. Biochar application notably increased soil pHs and electrical conductivity (ECe). Imposing NaCl stress reduced K concentrations in the wheat shoot and grains with concomitant higher Na concentrations in both parts. Parameters like foliar chlorophyll content (a, b, and total), stomatal and sub-stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate were also positively influenced by biochar addition. The study confirmed that biochar, particularly wheat-straw biochar, effectively mitigated the adverse effects of soil salinity, enhancing both soil quality and wheat growth. The study highlighted that biochar application can minimize the negative effects of salinity stress on wheat. Specifically, the types and dosages of biochar have to be optimized for different salinity levels under field conditions.

Placental vessels contain one-third of newborn blood volume termed as umbilical cord blood (UCB). It is an enriched product with many benefits but unfortunately, it is usually discarded as waste. Since the identification of its benefits, many countries have established Cord Blood Banks using UCB for transfusion and transplantation. Despite having a high fertility rate, no such facility is currently present in Pakistan. UCB is used as autologous blood and can also be used as a homologous source. In this study, 200 UCB units (250 ml blood bags; anticoagulant volume adjusted) were collected, volume obtained was calculated and correlated with gestational age and birth weight. Pearsons correlation coefficient has been applied on means that showed a strong positive relationship. In addition, different hematological and biochemical parameters (storage lesion parameters) were measured and mean values were calculated in order to provide baseline values. The study concluded that UCB can be collected in blood bags. More the gestational age and birth weight more will be the blood volume collected. It is recommended to conduct large-scale studies regarding the collection, storage and transfusion of UCB to provide a platform for the establishment of Cord Blood Banks in Pakistan.

The fight against insect pests primarily relies on the utilization of synthetic insecticides. However, improper application of these chemicals can lead to detrimental effects on both the environment and human health, as well as foster the development of insect resistance. Consequently, novel strategies must be implemented to address the challenges stemming from the prolonged use of synthetic insecticides in agricultural and public health environments. Certain strategies involve the combination of crop protectants, which not only enhance insecticidal effectiveness but also reduce application rates. Plant-based natural products emerge as promising alternatives for insect management. Monoterpenes, which are abundant plant compounds produced through the activation of various enzymes, have attracted significant attention for their effectiveness in insect control. Notably, they are prolific in fragrance-producing plants. This review explores the plant defense, insecticidal, and antimicrobial characteristics of monoterpenes against insect pests, shedding light on their potential modes of action and possibilities for commercialization. Emphasizing their role as targeted and environmentally safer, the review highlights the practical viability of monoterpenes within integrated pest management programs.

Numerous harmful phenolic contaminants are discharged into water that pose a serious threat to environment where two of the most important purification methodologies for the mitigation of phenolic contaminants are adsorption and photocatalysis. Besides cost, each process has drawbacks in terms of productivity, environmental impact, sludge creation, and the development of harmful by-products. To overcome these limitations, the modeling and optimization of water treatment methods is required. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is employed for the interpretation of treatment-based processes due to powerful learning, simplicity, high estimation accuracy, effectiveness, and improvement of process efficiency where artificial neural networks (ANNs) are most frequently employed for predicting and analyzing the efficiency of processes applied for the mitigation of these phenolic contaminants from water. ANNs are superior to conventional linear regression models because the latter are incapable of dealing with non-linear systems. ANNs can also reduce the operational cost of treating phenol-contaminated water. A correlation coefficient of >0.99 can be achieved using ANN with enhanced phenol mitigation percentage accuracy generally ranging from 80 % to 99.99 %. Using ANN optimization, the maximum phenol mitigation efficiencies achieved were 99.99 % for phenol, 99.93 % for bisphenol A, 99.6 % for nonylphenol, 97.1 % for 2-nitrophenol, 96.6 % for 4-chlorophenol and 90 % for 2,6-dichlorophenol. In numerous ANN models, Levenberg-Marquardt backpropagation algorithm for training was employed using MATLAB software. This study overviews their employment and application for optimization and modeling of removal processes and explicitly discusses the important input and output parameters necessary for better performance of the system. The comparison of ANNs with other AI techniques revealed that ANNs have better predictability for mitigation of most of the phenolic contaminants. Furthermore, several challenges and future prospects have also been discussed.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are important for applications like environmental monitoring and industrial automation. However, the limited energy resources of sensor nodes pose a significant challenge to the network’s longevity. Energy imbalances among nodes often result in premature failures and reduced overall network lifespan. Current solutions have not adequately addressed this issue due to network dynamics, varying energy consumption rates, and uneven node distribution. To tackle this, we propose a novel method using Prim’s algorithm to construct minimum spanning trees (MSTs) that enhance energy balance in WSNs. Prim’s algorithm effectively identifies optimal connections among network nodes to minimize energy consumption. Our methodology includes several key steps: network initialization, energy consumption modeling, MST construction using Prim’s algorithm, and optimizing the movement of mobile sink nodes. Extensive experiments with diverse datasets show that our approach significantly improves energy equilibrium, demonstrating high sensitivity and moderate complexity. This research underscores the potential of Prim’s algorithm to extend the lifespan of WSNs and enhance energy efficiency, contributing to sustainable and effective network deployments.

The climate change crisis is primarily associated with carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel-based electricity generation, which significantly contribute to the greenhouse gas effect. The implementation of renewable energy technologies can mitigate environmental impacts and promote a sustainable future. This study aimed to conduct a techno-economic feasibility analysis and optimize performance parameters for a 50 MWe capacity Linear Fresnel Reflector (LFR) concentrated solar power plant for nine stations under various climatic conditions. The analysis was conducted based on Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) and Capacity Factor (CF) to select a suitable Heat Transfer Fluid (HTF) for each station, by varying Solar Multiple (SM) from 1.0 to 6.0 and adjusting Thermal Energy Storage (TES) hours from four to sixteen. The HTFs selected for economically feasible projects at different stations were Hitec Solar Salt, Hitec, and Therminol VP-1. The combination of SM and TES hours was optimized for economic feasibility, targeting a minimum CF of 36 % and a maximum LCOE of 13.0 ¢/kWh. The optimum SM and TES hours were found to range from 2.0 to 5.8 and from six to thirteen, respectively. An LCOE of less than 7.5 ¢/kWh and a CF of more than 80 % was achieved for two stations with SM of 6.0 and TES of 16 h using Therminol VP-1. Stations with annual mean direct normal irradiance values higher than 1500 kWh/m2 and clearness index values over 0.58 are suitable for commercial power plants. This study contributes to achieving the United Nation's sustainable development goals by promoting the use of renewable energy technologies.

Water deficit severely limits plant growth especially in arid and semi-arid regions. Sunflower is one of the economically important oil producing crops. It is usually grown in water limited environment due to its moderate biological tolerance towards water stress. Interestingly,sunflower growth was improved in water deficit conditions using a plant growth promoter i.e. melatonin. Seeds were primed for 12 hours with melatonin (0, 50, 75, 100 µM) and these plants were later exposed to water limited environment (100 and 50 %). Results showed that reduced water conditions negatively affected various parameters such as leaf area, plant height, leaf number, achene weight/plant, capitulum weight, leaf total soluble sugars, catalase activity, anthocyanin, quercetin, gallic acid, vanillic acid, chlorogenic acid and cinnamic acid. The seed oil content also showed reduction of unsaturated to saturated fatty acid ratio. Specifically, almost all levels of melatonin applications improved growth (leaf area, leaf fresh and dry weight, plant height), yield (achene weight/plant, number of achenes/capitulum) and leaf metabolites (total soluble proteins, total soluble sugars, proline, total phenolics, anthocyanins, quercetin, gallic acid, vanillic acid, benzoic acid, syringic acid, sinapic acid) of stressed plants. The primed sunflowers exhibited enhanced leaf catalase activity, metabolizable energy and tissue nutritive value. The following phenolic profiles were observed: caffeic acid 100, syringic acid 100, p-coumaric 100, m-coumaric 9.8 and ferulic acid 100 % increased under 100 % water irrigations. Whereas, quercetin (4.7), gallic acid (76.2), vanillic acid (34.0), benzoic acid (334.5), cinnamic (0.6), sinapic acid (22.5) exhibited proportional % reduction. The unsaturation to saturation ratio of fatty acids was also better in the melatonin (100 µM) primed plants. Unprimed plants gave 47.0, while the primed plant exhibited 58.1 unsaturated to saturated fatty acids ratio. Moving forward, the application of 100 µM melatonin delivered better antioxidant protection and nutraceutical value of sunflower plants under water deficit along with enhanced yield.

The prevalence of inorganic pollutants in the environment, including heavy metals (HMs), necessitates a sustainable and cost-effective solution to mitigate their impacts on the environment and living organisms. The present research aimed to assess the phytoextraction capability of spinach (Spinach oleracea L.), under the combined effects of ascorbic acid (AA) and microwave (MW) irradiation amendments, cultivated using surgical processing wastewater. In a preliminary study, spinach seeds were exposed to MW radiations at 2.45 GHz for different durations (15, 30, 45, 60, and 90 seconds). Maximum germination was observed after the 30 seconds of radiation exposure. Healthy spinach seeds treated with MW radiations for 30 s were cultivated in the sand for two weeks, after which juvenile plants were transferred to a hydroponic system. Surgical industry wastewater in different concentrations (25 %, 50 %, 75 %, 100 %) and AA (10 mM) were provided to both MW-treated and untreated plants. The results revealed that MW-treatment significantly enhanced the plant growth, biomass, antioxidant enzyme activities and photosynthetic pigments, while untreated plants exhibited increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and electrolyte leakage (EL) compared with their controls. The addition of AA to both MW-treated and untreated plants improved their antioxidative defense capacity under HMs-induced stress. MW-treated spinach plants, under AA application, demonstrated relatively higher concentrations and accumulation of HMs including lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and nickel (Ni). Specifically, MW-treated plants with AA amendment showed a significant increase in Pb concentration by 188 % in leaves, Cd by 98 %, and Ni by 102 % in roots. Additionally, the accumulation of Ni increased by 174 % in leaves, Cd by 168 % in roots, and Pb by 185 % in the stem of spinach plant tissues compared to MW-untreated plants. These findings suggested that combining AA with MW irradiation of seeds could be a beneficial strategy for increasing the phytoextraction of HMs from wastewater and improving overall plant health undergoing HMs stress.

Dehydration-responsive element-binding (DREB) proteins are crucial transcription factors in plant regulatory mechanisms, playing a key role in responding to environmental stresses. Dehydration-responsive element-binding (DREB) proteins are crucial transcription factors in plant regulatory mechanisms, playing a key role in responding to environmental stresses. This study employs bioinformatics research methods to identify and characterize the DREB gene family in rapeseed (Brassica rapa L.) under abiotic stress conditions. The approach facilitates a detailed exploration of the genomic architecture and potential regulatory mechanisms that these genes may exhibit in response to environmental stresses. A whole-genome survey identified 75 DREB genes in rapeseed, which were classified into six subgroups (Ⅰ-Ⅵ) based on phylogenetic comparison with Arabidopsis homologs. The amino acid lengths of these genes ranged from 144 to 530, with predicted molecular weights between 15.63 kDa and 60.36 kDa, and isoelectric points from 4.48 to 9.32. Chromosomal localization revealed that these genes are distributed across 10 chromosomes, predominantly near telomeric regions, with more than 10 DREB genes located on Chr3 and Chr9 respectively. Structural domain analysis indicated that 57 DREB genes possess a single exon. Promoter cis-element analyses suggested that BrDREB genes could respond to diverse stressors, including drought, heat, hormones, and light. Transcriptomic analysis under cold stress revealed significant upregulation of BrDREB17, 24, 49, 50, and 51 in response to low temperature, while five BrDREB genes were not expressed. Specifically, BrDREB17, 24, 49, 50, and 51 showed high expression levels at 3 h of cold stress, whereas BrDREB30, 42, and 67 were highly expressed at 24 h of cold stress. Gene Ontology (GO) analysis demonstrated that the majority of biological processes mediated by BrDREB are associated with plant stress resistance. Protein interaction network analysis revealed that BrDREB9 and BrDREB26 interact with 15 proteins each, underscoring their significant biological roles within the DREB family in rapeseed. These findings provide a theoretical framework for further examination of the physiological and biochemical properties of the DREB gene family components in rapeseed. Our results may help to screen candidate genes for cold resistance in rapeseed and select rapeseed varieties better suited to the Tibetan locality to improve quality and yield in agricultural production.

Abstract A serious environmental problem that threatens soil quality, agricultural productivity, and food safety is heavy metal pollution in water sources. Heavy metal pollution is the main problem in tehsil Pasrur, Sialkot, Pakistan. Present study was arranged to notice the heavy metals in water, soil, forages and buffalo milk. There are seven sites that were used for this experiment. Highest malondialdehyde (MDA) contents (3.00 ± 0.01) were noticed in barseem roots at site 7. Ascorbate Peroxidase (APX) was reached at its peak (1.93 ± 0.01) at site 7 in the fresh barseem. Maximum protein contents (0.36 ± 0.01) were observed in fresh plant samples at site 2. Site 3's buffalo milk samples had the highest Ni content (7.22 ± 0.33 ppm), while Site 3's soil samples had the lowest Cr content (8.89 ± 0.56 ppm), Site 1's plant shoots had the lowest Cr content (27.75 ± 1.98 ppm), and Site 3's water had the highest Cr content (40.07 ± 0.49 ppm). The maximum fat content (5.38 ± 2.32%) was found in the milk of the animals at site 7. The highest density (31.88 ± 6.501%), protein content (3.64 ± 0.33%), lactose content (5.54 ± 0.320%), salt content (0.66 ± 0.1673%), and freezing point (− 0.5814 ± 0.1827 °C) were also observed in the milk from animals at site 7, whereas site 5 displayed the highest water content (0.66 ± 0.1673%) and peak pH value (11.64 ± 0.09). In selected samples, the pollution load index for Ni (which ranged from 0.01 to 1.03 mg/kg) was greater than 1. Site 7 has the highest conductivity value (5.48 ± 0.48). Values for the health risk index varied from 0.000151 to 1.00010 mg/kg, suggesting that eating tainted animal feed may pose health concerns. Significant health concerns arise from metal deposition in the food chain from soil to feed, with nickel having the highest health risk index.

Abstract A novel hyper cross-linked polymer of 2-Aminobenzoic acid (HCP-AA) is synthesized for the adsorption of Cr3+ and CO2. The Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area of HCP-AA is 615 m2 g−1. HCP-AA of particle size 0.5 nm showed maximum adsorption of Cr3+ for lab prepared wastewater (93%) while it was 88% for real industrial wastewater. It is might be due to electrostatic interactions, cation-π interactions, lone pair interactions and cation exchange at pH 7; contact time of 8 min; adsorbent dose 0.8 g. The adsorption capacity was calculated 52.63 mg g−1 for chromium metal ions at optimum conditions. Freundlich isotherm studies R2 = 0.9273 value is the best fit and follows pseudo second order kinetic model (R2 = 0.979). The adsorption is found non-spontaneous and exothermic through thermodynamic calculations like Gibbs free energy (ΔG), enthalpy change (ΔH) and entropy change (ΔS) were 6.58 kJ mol−1, − 60.91 kJ mol−1 and − 45.79 kJ mol−1 K−1, respectively. The CO2 adsorption capacity of HCP-AA is 1.39 mmol/g with quantity of 31.1 cm3/g (6.1 wt%) at 273Kwhile at 298 K adsorption capacity is 1.12 mmol/g with quantity 25.2 cm3/g (5 wt%). Overall, study suggests that carboxyl (–COOH) and amino (–NH2) groups may be actively enhancing the adsorption capacity of HCP-AA for Cr3+ and CO2.

The government is the front guard responsible for breaking the chain of spread of Covid-19. However, multi-stakeholder support and integrated cooperation are needed to break the chain of transmission and spread of Covid-19, including the involvement of ulama figures. Because, in the structure of Acehnese society, ulama occupy a highly respected and revered position. Moreover, the Aceh government considers ulama to be the government's communication link to the community. Therefore, this article aims to understand perceptions and identify the involvement of ulama, both directly and indirectly, in handling Covid-19 in Aceh. The method used is qualitative with a phenomenological approach. The database comes from in-depth interviews, participant observation and documentation studies. Meanwhile, technical data analysis uses an inductive approach and is analyzed interactively. The research results show thatThe role of ulama has become crucial in efforts to handle and manage the impact of Covid19 in Aceh. Ulama play an important role in raising public awareness during the Covid-19 pandemic. Through collaboration with the government, ulama participate in socializing government policies down to the grassroots level to suppress the spread of Covid-19. It is not just an appeal but is also involved in disciplining the community regarding health protocols, supporting preventive measures, providing psychological and spiritual support, as well as encouraging social solidarity, and even taking part in the Covid-19 vaccination program. Abstract Background Water stress is a major danger to crop yield, hence new approaches to strengthen plant resilience must be developed. To lessen the negative effects of water stress on wheat plants, present study was arranged to investigate the role of synergistic effects of biochar, trans-zeatin riboside (t-ZR), and Azospirillum brasilense on soil improvement and enzymatic activity in water-stressed wheat. Results In a three-replication experiment comprising of four treatments (T0: Control, T1: Drought stress (DS), T2: DS + t-ZR with biochar, T3: DS + A. brasilense with biochar), we observed notable improvements in soil quality and enzymatic activities in water-stressed wheat plants with the application of t-ZR and A. brasilense with biochar. In drought stress, Treatment having the application of A. brasilense with biochar performs best as compared to the other and significant increased the enzymatic activities such as peroxidase (7.36%), catalase (8.53%), superoxide dismutase (6.01%), polyphenol oxidase (14.14%), and amylase (16.36%) in wheat plants. Different enzymatic activities showed different trends of results. Soil organic C, dissolved organic C, dissolved organic N also enhanced 29.46%, 8.59%, 22.70% respectively with the application of A. brasilense with biochar under drought stress condition. Conclusions The synergistic action of A. brasilense and biochar creates an effective microbiological environment that supports essential plant physiological processes during drought stress. This enhancement is attributed to improved soil fertility and increased organic matter content, highlighting the potential of these novel strategies in mitigating water stress effects and enhancing crop resilience.

Abstract Biochar is a promising solution to alleviate the negative impacts of salinity stress on agricultural production. Biochar derived from food waste effect was investigated on three plant species, Medicago sativa, Amaranthus caudatus, and Zea mays, under saline environments. The results showed that biochar improved significantly the height by 30%, fresh weight of shoot by 35% and root by 45% of all three species compared to control (saline soil without biochar adding), as well as enhanced their photosynthetic pigments and enzyme activities in soil. This positive effect varied significantly between the 3 plants highlighting the importance of the plant-biochar interactions. Thus, the application of biochar is a promising solution to enhance the growth, root morphology, and physiological characteristics of plants under salt-induced stress.

Abstract This study encompasses a quick, efficient, repeatable and reproducible analytical method for simultaneous determination of Bromoxynil (3, 5-Dibromo-4-hydroxybenzonitrile) and MCPA (2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid) using RP-HPLC with UV-Detector. Bromoxynil + MCPA is one of the most selective post emergent herbicide formulations for the control of important broad leaf weeds infesting small grains (wheat, barley, oats, rye), conservation reserve program areas and grass grown for seed. Optimum weed control is achieved when Bromoxynil + MCPA is applied to actively growing weed seedlings. So, a simple, repeatable, reproducible and efficient simultaneous analytical method was developed for Bromoxynil + MCPA. The developed method was applied for the detection and quantitation of these pesticides in formulations and raw materials with excellent recoveries. It was validated according to ICH Guidelines with excellent linearity R2 = 0.992 for Bromoxynil and 0.998 for MCPA. For Bromoxynil, LOD = 1.57 mg/L and LOQ = 5.22 mg/L while for MCPA the LOD = 1.08 mg/L and LOQ = 3.62 mg/L was found. The proposed method has shown high precision (RSD %) 0.06% and 0.11% for Bromoxynil and MCPA respectively while the trueness has been calculated in terms of recovery percentage obtained as “mean value of Bromoxynil 99.53% and MCPA 100.10%” which is excellent under optimized conditions. For repeatability and reproducibility, five replicate readings of standard and sample were taken and had found within acceptable limits of relative standard deviation (RSD ≤ ± 2%). Finally, the robustness of the developed method was determined by changing flow rate and mobile phase ratios that has found within the permissible limits (% RSD NMT 1.5). So, the proposed analytical method has found to be more precise, valid and accurate at commercial scale. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Previous research has demonstrated that Maasai and Europeans tend to align in their ratings of the physical strength and aggressiveness of Maasai male faces, calibrated to hand grip strength (HGS). However, perceptions of attractiveness of these faces differed among populations. In this study, three morphs of young Maasai men created by means of geometric morphometrics, and depicting the average sample and two extrema (± 4 SD of HGS), were assessed by men and women from Tanzania, Czech Republic, Russia, Pakistan, China, and Mexico (total sample = 1540). The aim of this study was to test cross-cultural differences in the perception of young Maasai men’s composites calibrated to HGS, focusing on four traits: physical strength, attractiveness, aggressiveness, and helpfulness. Individuals from all six cultures were able to distinguish between low, medium, and high HGS portraits. Across all study populations, portrait of Maasai men with lower HGS was perceived as less attractive, more aggressive, and less helpful. This suggests that people from diverse populations share similar perceptions of physical strength based on facial shape, as well as attribute similar social qualities like aggressiveness and helpfulness to these facial images. Participants from all samples rated the composite image of weak Maasai men as the least attractive.

Abstract As the discourse around business ethics and sustainable development intensifies, many organizations are adopting initiatives in corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a strategic tool to satisfy regulatory requirements and also stakeholder expectations. While exploring the relationship between sustainable environmental practices and green innovation, this study identifies four critical stakeholder-centered CSR activities as precursors to sustainable environmental practices using data from 404 manufacturing firms in Ghana. The data was analyzed using the partial least squares method to structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The results established a positively significant relationship between employee-centered CSR initiatives and sustainable environmental practices while the relationship between community-centered CSR, consumer-centered CSR and environment-centered with sustainable environmental practices CSR were each not significant. However, sustainable environmental practices were found to advance green innovation. The study further recommended a multi-dimensional stakeholder-centered approach to the practice of CSR as a strategic tool for sustainable environmental development by the leadership of manufacturing firms, policy makers and regulatory bodies.

Ultrasonic and microwave extraction process has great prospects to convert food and agricultural waste from food industries to value-added goods. Also, this review extensively elaborates the utilization of ultrasonication and microwave extraction (US-MW) process for valorization of dairy waste extracted proteins into novel foods. Both of these extraction and processing techniques are considered as green technologies when compared with the other conventional or chemical extraction and processing techniques. Further, this review also explains the impact of US-MW alone and in combination on the dairy waste proteins extraction, nutritional and techno-functional attributes of these dairy-waste proteins. The review also highlights the economic and cost-effective benefits of US-MW processes for extracting the proteins from dairy waste, indicating their feasibility and sustainability. The review also elucidated the synergistic utilization of US-MW extraction as a viable processing technique in extraction or production of bioactive compounds like dairy proteins. In conclusion, this review elucidates the US-MW, both individually and in synergy as a viable source of dairy waste proteins extraction and their application in functional foods. Moreover, in accordance to the latest developments and future prospects at pilot and commercial level to assess the practicability of synergistic use of US-MW extraction in bioenergy production from food wastes other than dairy waste for extraction and production of biodiesel, hydrogen, green methane, and ethanol.

Centella asiatica has been known for its significant medicinal properties due to abundance of bioactive constituents like triterpenoids and flavonoids. Nevertheless, an appropriate solvent system and extraction technique is still lacking to ensure optimized extraction of bioactive constituents present in C. asiatica. Recently, scientists are more focused towards application of green sustainable extraction techniques for the valuable components from plant matrix owing to their eco-friendly and safe nature. Among these, ultrasonication (US) is known as a valuable strategy for separation of bioactive components from medicinal plants. Hence, current research was performed to observe the effect of ultrasonication in the presence of five different solvents (Water, Hexane, Methanol, Chloroform, and Ethyl acetate) on total phenolic contents (TPC), total flavonoid contents (TFC), antioxidant properties (DPPH, ABTS, Nitric oxide radical activity, and Superoxide anion assay), and four major triterpenoid contents in C. asiatica leaves. Herein, ultrasound assisted methanolic extract (UAME) possessed maximum amount of TPC (129.54 mg GAE/g), TFC (308.31 mg QE/g), and antioxidant properties (DPPH: 82.21 % & FRAP: 45.98 µmol TE/g) followed by ultrasound-assisted Water extract (UAWE), ultrasound-assisted ethyl acetate extract (UAEAE), ultrasound-assisted n-hexane extract (UAHE), and ultrasound-assisted chloroform extract (UACE), respectively. Moreover, the superoxide radical and nitric oxide assays depicted a similar trend, revealing the highest percent inhibition for UAME (SO: 83.47 % & NO: 66.76 %) however, the lowest inhibition was displayed by UACE (63.22 % & 50.21 %), respectively. Highest content of major terpenoids were found in UAME of C. asiatica leaves as madecassoside (8.21 mg/g) followed by asiaticoside (7.82 mg/g), madecassic acid (4.44 mg/g), and asiatic acid (3.38 mg/g). Ultrasound-assisted extraction technique can be an efficient extraction method for bioactive compounds present in C. asiatica. However, ultrasonication along with methanol as an extraction solvent can surely enhance the extraction of valuable constituents. The results of this study provide an insight into major terpenoids, and antioxidants present in extracts of C. asiatica, implicating its use in ancient medicine systems and future drug development.

Soybean is considered a plausible carrier of health-promising potential phytonutrients; the soybean also contains higher magnitudes of antinutrients like tannins, phytates, trypsin, protease, and oxalates. Therefore, the present study was carried out to reduce the load of antinutrients using microwave (Mw) heat processing at 0.9 kW for 1.5 min, also assessing its effect on soy flour's nutritional, antioxidant, and value-addition properties. The strengthening of masonry infill wall panels (MIWPs) in reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures is of prime importance due to their failure in the in-plane and out-of-plane direction, as evidenced by past earthquakes. This research study applies an innovative approach of dual-strengthening materials to individual MIWPs in the RC frame structures to improve their seismic performance. Ferrocement overlay (FCO) and engineered cementitious composites (ECC) materials are applied to different MIWPs in a half-scaled two-story, two-by-two-bay reinforced concrete frame structure with different arrangements of infill walls. The strengthened masonry infill wall panels (SMIWPs) in the RC frame structure were tested using the quasi-static testing protocol. The testing results are compared with conventional masonry infill wall panels (CMIWPs) walls in RC frame structure in terms of damage pattern and backbone curve to evaluate the effect of the strengthening strategies applied to the MIWPs. The lateral Strength, stiffness, and ultimate ductility were enhanced by 166%, 40%, and 60%, respectively. The strengthening strategy effectively improved the damage propagations, lateral Strength, stiffness, and ductility.

AbstractWith the presence of negative organizational behaviors, not only is the employee’s productivity and job satisfaction affected, but the entire organizational performance of employees also declines. Workplace ostracism affects employees’ psychological well-being by fostering exhaustion of their emotional, psychological, and material resources, significantly influencing counterproductive work behavior. The present research also addresses the emerging negative workplace behaviors by studying the mediation of transactional and relational psychological contract breaches. The research has adopted a ‘quantitative research design’ followed by a survey approach to collect data from Pakistan’s healthcare sector employees. 420 questionnaires were disbursed among employees, of which 350 were received back, and 332 questionnaires were finalized after data cleaning and screening. Smart-Pls was used to analyze data and assess the association among different variables. Different tests were performed including the descriptive summary, validity (convergent and discriminant), model fitness and path analysis. Results indicated that WOC significantly impacts CWB. RPCB also significantly influences the CWB. TPCB insignificantly effects CWB and WOC significantly influences RPCB and TPCB. Mediation of TPS has been insignificant, whereas the mediation of RPS has resulted as significant. The present research holds considerable theoretical and practical importance as it provides practical insights to the managerial bodies of the healthcare sector in Pakistan to make strategies for vanishing such counterproductive work behaviors of employees that damage the morale and mental peace of other workers. The limitations of this research have also been addressed in the last section.

AbstractA productive and positive workplace culture is essential to gaining positive organizational work outcomes. At the same time, counterproductive work behaviour in Punjab has been observed as a prevailing negative behaviour that hinders positive workplace behaviour. Counterproductive work behaviour works against organizational goals and is considered one of the negative sides of organizational behaviour. The current research tested the influence of abusive supervision on counterproductive work behaviour with the mediating role of Transactional and relational psychological contract breach. However, this research has also tested Resilience as a moderator-mediator between abusive supervision and the two forms of psychological contract breach. The hypothesized associations among variables were tested through the primary quantitative research method. Convenience sampling under non-probability sampling approach was implemented. Data was collected from 350 Punjab civil secretaries’ employees. Three hundred twelve screened and cleaned data were analyzed using SPSS and AMOS. Results declared that Abusive supervision significantly impacts counterproductive work behavior, whereas the mediation moderation of Relational psychological contract breach among all variables has resulted in being insignificant. The mediation of Relational psychological contract breach between Abusive supervision and counterproductive work behavior was significant, while the mediation of Transactional psychological contract breach between Abusive supervision and counterproductive work behavior was insignificant. Resilience resulted as an insignificant mediator moderator in this model The research holds various theoretical and practical implications, and the research limitations have also been addressed.

Urbanization poses a significant threat to environmental sustainability, particularly in Pakistan, where uncontrolled urban growth and water mismanagement have exacerbated water scarcity and climate variability. This study investigates the spatiotemporal impacts of urbanization and climate change on groundwater in Lahore District, Pakistan. various parameters were considered to execute the study including land use/land cover (LULC), rainfall, Land Surface Temperature (LST), ground wells and population data using advanced techniques such as Random Forest machine learning algorithm, Climate Hazards Group Infrared Precipitation, and geographically weighted regression (GWR) analysis. Our findings reveal that urbanization has severely impacted the water table in the north, northwest, and southwest areas. There is a significant negative negative correlation (−0.333) between the quantity of groundwater level (GWL) and the annual average LST whereas, the p-value (0.75) is also showing highly significant relation of GWL and LST in the study area. Whereas a positive association (0.666) exist (p-value 0.333 moderately significant) between yearly GWL and the mean precipitation. This research provides crucial insights for policymakers to understand the effects of urbanization and climate change on groundwater and develop strategies to mitigate adverse impacts in the study area.
