Nowadays, most of the world’s palm oil is being produced in Malaysia and Indonesia; however, the demand for this vegetable oil as an edible oil is declining in many countries since consuming palm oil in excess can result in serious health problems. Consequently, finding new applications such as the production of bio-based polymers to make use of this cheap and abundant vegetable oil seems necessary. Herein, we report the copolymerization of palm oil with sulfur with different feed ratios via inverse vulcanization. The copolymers are then characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction analysis. The results confirmed the formation of the polymers and their stability against depolymerization. Altogether, the obtained sulfur-palm oil copolymers showed great properties such as thermal stability up to 230°C under a nitrogen atmosphere and rubbery properties at room temperature. Although the Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) thermograms had previously confirmed the high conversion of elemental sulfur into the polymeric structure by comparing the initial sulfur content and the final polysulfide content in the polymer, some unreacted elemental sulfur was also observed in the final product. Sulfur-palm oil (S-Palm oil) is a new green polymer that helps to find a new use for palm oil as a big industry as well as sulfur which is underutilized and left in stockpile as a byproduct in gas and petroleum refineries.

Nitrogen loss from urea fertiliser due to its high solubility characteristics has led to the invention of controlled release urea (CRU). Majority of existing CRU coatings are produced from a non-biodegradable, toxic and expensive synthetic polymers. This study determines the feasibility of fly ash-based geopolymer as a coating material for urea fertilizer. The effects of fly ash particle size (15.2 μm, 12.0 μm, and 8.6 μm) and solid to liquid (S : L) ratio (3 : 1, 2.8 : 1, 2.6 : 1, 2.4 : 1 and 2.2 : 1) on the geopolymer coating, the characterization such as FTIR analysis, XRD analysis, surface area and pore size analysis, setting time analysis, coating thickness, and crushing strength, and the release kinetics of geopolymer coated urea in water and soil were determined. Lower S : L ratio was beneficial in terms of workability, but it had an adverse impact on geopolymer properties where it increased porosity and decreased mechanical strength to an undesirable level for the CRU application. Geopolymer coated urea prepared from the finest fly ash fraction and lowest S : L ratio demonstrated high mechanical strength and slower urea release profile. Complete urea release was obtained in 132 minutes in water and 15 days in soil from geopolymer-coated urea whereas for uncoated urea it took only 20 minutes in water and 3 days in soil. Thus, geopolymer can potentially be used as a coating material for urea fertilizer to replace commonly used expensive and biodegradable polymer-based coatings.

Since injection administration for diabetes is invasive, it is important to develop an effective transdermal method for insulin. However, transdermal delivery remains challenging owing to the strong barrier function of the stratum corneum (SC) of the skin. Here, we developed ionic liquid (IL)-in-oil microemulsion formulations (MEFs) for transdermal insulin delivery using choline-fatty acids ([Chl][FAs])-comprising three different FAs (C18:0, C18:1, and C18:2)-as biocompatible surface-active ILs (SAILs). The MEFs were successfully developed using [Chl][FAs] as surfactants, sorbitan monolaurate (Span-20) as a cosurfactant, choline propionate IL as an internal polar phase, and isopropyl myristate as a continuous oil phase. Ternary phase behavior, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy studies revealed that MEFs were thermodynamically stable with nanoparticle size. The MEFs significantly enhanced the transdermal permeation of insulin via the intercellular route by compromising the tight lamellar structure of SC lipids through a fluidity-enhancing mechanism. In vivo transdermal administration of low insulin doses (50 IU/kg) to diabetic mice showed that MEFs reduced blood glucose levels (BGLs) significantly compared with a commercial surfactant-based formulation by increasing the bioavailability of insulin in the systemic circulation and sustained the insulin level for a much longer period (half-life > 24 h) than subcutaneous injection (half-life 1.32 h). When [Chl][C18:2] SAIL-based MEF was transdermally administered, it reduced the BGL by 56% of its initial value. The MEFs were biocompatible and nontoxic (cell viability > 90%). They remained stable at room temperature for 3 months and their biological activity was retained for 4 months at 4 °C. We believe SAIL-based MEFs will alter current approaches to insulin therapy and may be a potential transdermal nanocarrier for protein and peptide delivery.

Purpose: To assess the interference of patient care due to COVID 19 related restrictions and to formulate the future guidelines. Methods: This cross-sectional online survey-based study was carried out among the ophthalmologist of Bangladesh in the early lock down period (01 April to 30 April) 2020. Results: Total 93 ophthalmologists responded to the study. Most of the ophthalmologist were seeing the patients with red eye (40.9%), ocular trauma (40.9%), acute infections and inflammations (35.5%), and vision loss (31.2%). 80.6% responder informed that they wear Mask, gloves, and head cap during patient evaluation. 51.6% used Personal protection equipment. 55.9% used a breath shield with the slit lamp settings. 60.4% maintained hand wash, and disinfectant facilities for the patients. 85.7% ophthalmologist had ensured for wearing the mask to all patients before entering the examination and consultancy room. 86% ophthalmologist of our study had performed their surgeries for ophthalmic emergency. Conclusions: Wearing mask is an important tool to prevent transmission of COVID-19 for both patients and ophthalmologists in working place. Chemotherapeutic cytotoxic agents such as paclitaxel (PTX) are considered essential for the treatment of various cancers. However, PTX injection is associated with severe systemic side effects and high rates of patient noncompliance. Micelle formulations (MFs) are nano-drug delivery systems that offer a solution to these problems. Herein, we report an advantageous carrier for the transdermal delivery of PTX comprising a new MF that consists of two biocompatible surfactants: cholinium oleate ([Cho][Ole]), which is a surface-active ionic liquid (SAIL), and sorbitan monolaurate (Span-20). A solubility assessment confirmed that PTX was readily solubilized in the SAIL-based micelles via multipoint hydrogen bonding and cation-π and π-π interactions between PTX and SAIL[Cho][Ole]. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy revealed that in the presence of PTX, the MF formed spherical PTX-loaded micelles that were well-distributed in the range 8.7-25.3 nm. According to DLS, the sizes and size distributions of the micelle droplets did not change significantly over the entire storage period, attesting to their physical stability. In vitro transdermal assessments using a Franz diffusion cell revealed that the MF absorbed PTX 4 times more effectively than a Tween 80-based formulation and 6 times more effectively than an ethanol-based formulation. In vitro and in vivo skin irritation tests revealed that the new carrier had a negligible toxicity profile compared with a conventional ionic liquid-based carrier. Based on these findings, we believe that the SAIL[Cho][Ole]-based MF has potential as a biocompatible nanocarrier for the effective transdermal delivery of poorly soluble chemotherapeutics such as PTX.

In this study, we present a highly stable vegetable oil ionic liquid (IL)-based emulsion liquid membrane (VOILELM) for the removal of lactic acid from water streams. The system developed as a part of this work comprises a non-ionic surfactant Span 80, sodium hydroxide as an internal stripping agent, sunflower canola oil as a green diluent, and IL-tetramethylammonium acetate [TMAm][Ac]-as a carrier. VOILELM stability was evaluated in terms of breakage, emulsion diameter, and standalone stability. The effect of various parameters, namely, concentration of the surfactant, concentration of the internal stripping agent, concentration of the carrier, phase ratio, homogenizer speed, and homogenization time, on the VOILELM stability was studied. The results revealed that VOILELM was highly stable, with 1.34% minimum breakage, 1.16 μm emulsion diameter, and 131 min standalone stability. The optimal process parameters were 0.1 wt % Span 80, 0.1 M NaOH, 0.3 wt % IL, 0.25 phase ratio, 5000 rpm homogenizer speed, and 5 min homogenization time. At these optimized conditions, 96.08% lactic acid extraction efficiency was achieved. Thus, a highly effective VOILELM was developed, with minimal breakage and emulsion diameter and maximum stability.

The two-fold threats of the crisis of petrochemical industry-based plastics and serious environmental pollution have triggered the valorization of naturally occurring biopolymers to produce nanocellulose (NC). Nanocellulose has been used extensively in a variety of demanding applications due to its excellent features including biocompatibility, light weight, tunable surface properties, and improved environmental footprint. However, the sustainable production of NC is still confronted with bottlenecks to realize commercial feasibility due to poor solubility and hard processability of biopolymers using conventional hazardous solvents and reagents including concentrated sulfuric acid. The key might rest on the use of ionic liquids (ILs) that have induced a great deal of interest in recent years as powerful “green” solvents for biopolymer processing. ILs can be used as a catalyst and/or reaction medium and/or swelling agent for NC production with an eminent yield of high-quality NC under mild operating conditions coupled with proficient recoverability and recyclability. This review presents the recent technological developments of ILs-assisted proper valorization strategies of numerous bioresources for NC isolation and modification. The impact of IL cation/anion on structural changes of NC is also covered. The major advances in exploring ILs for NC surface modification reactions such as esterification, silylation, and surface plasticization as well as the microscopic insights of NC interaction with ILs are also reviewed. In view of the dominance of green chemistry principles for high purity of the recovered nanocellulose, close R&D endeavors for cheap and biodegradable ILs conjoined with emerging recycling techniques might boost sustainable commercialization.

Background: Ionic liquids (ILs) are claimed as green solvents and have demonstrated ability in the dissolution of several biomaterials and polymers, thus promoting their applications in wide scope. The aim of this study was to evaluate the yeast cells in the ionic liquid (IL), choline acetate [Cho]OAc as an eco-friendlier IL for their growth and ability of fermentation of the empty fruit bunch (EFB) biomass for ethanol production via monitoring the cell growth curve and kinetics. Methods: The Saccharomyces cerevisiae was cultured for five days on yeast extract-peptone-dextrose (YPD) agar and the sub-culturing was carried out every two weeks to evaluate the growth of yeast in [Cho]OAc at different concentrations; 5%, 10%, and 20%, where it was pre-cultivated for 24 h at 30 °C and 150 rpm in a shaking incubator as a control culture. Yeast cell number was determined by counting using a hemocytometer. Also, the kinetic growth of yeast during the fermentation of EFB was evaluated. Result: Cell concentration increased, ethanol production increased along with the optical density with the peak reached at 72 h, then declined. Enzymatic hydrolysis process followed by fermentation of EFB using [Cho][OAc] improved the yield of sugar, saccharification and ethanol around 1.938, 2.879, and 2.165 times in comparison with untreated EFB with IL. Furthermore, values of specific growth rates obtained in IL-medium and non-IL-medium are applicable for ethanol production to take place. The results showed the ability of yeast cells for fermentation even in the presence of IL. Conclusion: The results showed that the presence of the IL did not suppress the growth of the yeast cells and did not impair the fermentation productivity.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are ubiquitous anthropogenic pollutants of major environmental concern. They remain in the environment and disturb the whole ecosystem. Considering the severe toxicity of PCBs on human health and global ecosystem, researchers developed several analytical procedures for the quantification of PCBs from different sources. This review intends to cover latest analytical procedures reported for the analysis of PCBs in different kinds of sample matrices. In particular, advanced sample extraction and clean-up procedures developed with green aspects were highlighted as case studies. The review further addressed the key analytical challenges followed by concluding remarks. Overall, this critical review highlighted all latest technologies reported for the analysis of PCBs.

Vegetable oils are a promising class of bioresources for producing green polymeric materials to reduce the dependence on petro-based polymers. In this study, a green copolymer prepared by thermal copolymerization corn oil with sulphur at its molten state is reported for the first time. The proportions of sulphur to corn oil (w/w%) in the reaction mixture were varied in the range of 50/50 to 80/20 and the reactions were carried out at 170°C for 1 h. The obtained copolymers were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). The percentage of the unsaturated fatty acid portion was found to act as a multifunctional monomer stabilizing polysulphide forming crosslinked structures that vary depending on reactant sulphur content. The obtained copolymers were found to be amorphous thermosets with heavily crosslinked structures and composite morphologies. The copolymers also showed high thermal stability under nitrogen atmosphere. The new copolymers are environmentally friendly hybrid material promoting green chemistry with a potential added value to abundantly available sulphur and corn oil.

Ionic liquids (ILs) have attracted growing interest as designer solvents/materials for exploring unrealized functions in many areas of research including drug formulations and delivery owing to their inherent tunable physicochemical and biological properties. The use of ILs in the pharmaceutical industry can address challenges related to the use of conventional organic solvent-based chemical permeation enhancers. Their tunability in forming ion pairs with a diverse range of ions enables the task-specific optimization of ILs at the molecular level. In particular, ILs comprising second- and third-generation cations and anions have been extensively used to design biocompatible drug delivery systems to address the challenges related to conventional topical and transdermal drug delivery, including limited permeability, high cytotoxicity, and skin irritation. This review highlights the progress in IL-related research with particular emphasis on the very recent conceptual developments in transdermal drug delivery. Technological advancement and approaches for the formation of IL-based topical and transdermal delivery systems, as well as their promising application in drug delivery, are also discussed.

The current alternative of using aromatic-based wax soak solvents has been found to be hazardous and imposes a high cost on field expenditures. These solvents are widely used in the oil and gas industry to soften up wax before the pigging process. However, their impacts on the environment are quite concerning. Plus, they also impose hazardous exposure and are found to be damaging to both plastic and rubber hoses. To replace the current alternative with other hydrocarbon-based wax soak solvents, ionic liquids were found to have the capability to increase the solvent power capabilities and the efficiency of wax soak solvent in dissolving heavy crude oil. To optimise the application of hydrocarbon solvents and ionic liquid in wax dissolution, the affinity of ionic liquids in three solvents was studied. The solvents were condensate, ethyl acetate, and xylene. It was found that from four types of ionic liquids tested, only BMIMCL and HMIMBr were miscible in all three of the solvents used. Dissolution of hard deposited paraffin wax in condensate, ethyl acetate and xylene was conducted using the spectral analysis method, and it was found that the dissolution of paraffin wax was greatest in ethyl acetate. However, enchantment on wax dissolution was also observed for gas condensate and xylene. The wax soaking time was also optimised, in which the dissolution of wax was found to reach a saturation level when the wax had been soaked for over 90 min in the solvents, especially for gas condensate. Further study on the effect of ionic liquid introduced alongside condensate, ethyl acetate and xylene, aiming to enhance the solvent power, was also conducted using the spectral analysis method. The introduction of ionic liquids to all hydrocarbon-based wax soak solvents used in this project was proven to significantly increase the UV-VIS absorbance of the extracted solvents after paraffin wax had been soaked for 30 min.

One of the major emerging disasters for aquatic life as well as humans, is an oil spill. Aerogels are a suitable alternative for the cleaning of the oil spill cause of their outstanding characteristics. In this study, a facile method was presented for the production of aerogels from cellulose/lignocellulose using ionic liquids. This method is sustainable as it employs greener materials. Aerogels were prepared using sol–gel reaction with ionic liquids following gelation, and freeze-drying for 24 h. In the initial work, 1-Ethyl-3-Methylimidazolium Acetate [Emim][Ac] and 1-Butyl-3-Methylimidazolium Chloride [Bmim][Cl] were used. The resultant aerogels possess an interconnected porous structure depending upon the type of ionic liquid employed. The TGA and FESEM results suggest that aerogels using [Bmim][Cl] possess better thermal stability and porous structure as compare to [Emim][Ac]. The removal efficiency of [Bmim][Cl] was 84% which was 12% higher than [Emim][Ac] based aerogels.

We report a new series of lipid-based biocompatible ionic liquids (LBILs) consisting of the long-chain phosphonium compound 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-ethyl-phosphatidylcholine as the cation and the long-chain fatty acids stearic acid, oleic acid, or linoleic acid as anions. These materials were found to be completely miscible with many polar and nonpolar organic solvents as well as dispersible in water. These LBILs also exhibited excellent biocompatibility with an artificial three-dimensional human epidermis model.

Bio-synthesis approach for gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) has received tremendous attention as an efficient and eco-friendly process. However, kinetic growth and colloidal stability of AuNPs synthesized by this process remained challenging. In this study, Elaeis guineensis (oil palm) kernel (OPK) extract prepared in an ionic liquid (IL)[EMIM][OAc] (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate) was employed to control and tune the size and morphology of AuNPs. Synthesized AuNPs were characterized using UV-vis spectrophotometer, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to observe any changes in absorbance, surface charge and particle size, respectively. IL mediated AuNPs were examined for 120 days and found well dispersed and stable at room temperature. UV-vis analysis demonstrated that volume of extract played an important role to control the stability of AuNPs. After 120 days, only 8.86% reduction from maximum absorbance was observed using 2 mL of volume of extract, which was elevated to 47.64% in case of 0.3 mL. TEM analysis was performed periodically after day 1, day 30, day 60, day 90 and day 120 and minor increase in the size was observed. Insignificant change in zeta potential value after 120 days supported enhanced stability of IL mediated AuNPs. Crystalline nature of AuNPs was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern. The particles size and zeta potential of AuNPs was measured as 8.72 nm and −18.7 mV, respectively. However, the absence of [EMIM][OAc] from OPK extract resulted into larger particles size (9.64 nm), low zeta potential value (−13.9 mV) and enhanced aggregation of particles. Finally, experimental data were used to predict the theoretical and the experimental settling time for AuNPs to evaluate colloidal stability. Monomeric ionic liquids (ILs), ionic liquid polymers (ILPs) and IL-based composites have emerged as potential materials for CO2 capture owing to their exceptional intrinsic physical solubility of CO2. This study reports the development of novel IL polymer materials incorporating CO2-philic tunable nanopores and their subsequent utilization for CO2 capture. In this approach, primarily, micelles were formed in monomeric IL 1-vinyl-3-ethylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide using a CO2-philic surfactant (N-ethyl perfluorooctyl sulfonamide) through self-assembly, from which polymeric materials were fabricated via free radical polymerization. The CO2 adsorption studies demonstrated 3-fold enhancements for the surfactant micelle incorporated IL polymers (SMI-ILPs) compared to their bare IL polymers. The SMI-ILPs were regenerated by simply heating at 70 °C and reused for 15 cycles with a retention of over 96% of CO2 uptake capacity. The simple recovery and notable enhancements in CO2 sorption of novel SMI-ILPs were traced to the adsorption of CO2 at the (i) highly porous IL-based polymeric networks, and (ii) nanometer sized apolar pores made by CO2-philic surfactant tails. This work will open up new possibilities for the development of IL based smart materials for CO2 capture and separation.

Many countries in the world aim to achieve sustainable development goals by 2030 following ambitious climate change mitigation, and thus, the concept of sustainable biorefinery has attracted immense research and development around the world. The concept of the biorefinery is centrally based on the conversion of biomass into biofuels and value-added products. Nevertheless, lowering the recalcitrance of the lignocellulosic matrix in a cost-effective and environmentally benign manner is a crucial pretreatment step. Different pretreatment methods have been categorized as physical, chemical, biological, physicochemical, and combined. Recently, some novel ionic liquids have also emerged as promising sustainable pretreatment solutions for use of lignocellulosic waste on a large scale. This review briefly presents recent findings on the pretreatment for the conversion of lignocellulosic materials into fuel and value-added products.

Ionic liquid (IL) surfactants have attracted great interest as promising substitutes for conventional surfactants owing to their exceptional and favorable physico-chemical properties. However, most IL surfactants are not eco-friendly and form unstable micelles, even when using a high concentration of the surfactant. In this study, we prepared a series of halogen-free and biocompatible choline-fatty-acid-based ILs with different chain lengths and degrees of saturation, and we then investigated their micellar properties in aqueous solutions. Characterization of the synthesized surface-active ILs (SAILs) was performed by 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and elemental analysis. The surface-active properties of the SAILs were investigated by tensiometry, conductometry, and dynamic light scattering measurements. The critical micelle concentration of the SAILs was found to be 2-4 times lower than those of conventional surfactants. The thermodynamic properties of micellization (ΔG0m, ΔH0m, and ΔS0m) indicate that the micellization process of the SAILs is spontaneous, stable, and entropy-driven at room temperature. The cytotoxicity of the SAILs was evaluated using mammalian cell line NIH 3T3. Importantly, [Cho][Ole] shows lower toxicity than the analogous ILs with conventional surfactants. These results clearly suggest that these environmentally friendly SAILs can be used as a potential alternative to conventional ILs for various purposes, including biological applications.

Ionic liquids (ILs) are liquid salts at ambient or lower temperatures and consist of ions and short-lived ion pairs. They are potential alternatives to toxic, hazardous, highly flammable, and volatile solvents for preparing solutions, dispersions, gels, composites, and polymeric melts. ILs have some very interesting and unique characteristics like good chemical and thermal stability and very low vapor pressures. They have good solvation interactions with a wide range of organic, inorganic, and polymeric compounds. They can enhance colloidal stability and the elasticity range of polymers. ILs are environmental friendly, easily recyclable, and structurally similar to the conventional solvents. For optimal performance, it is necessary to fully understand the rheological properties of ILs and their different systems for academic interests such as understanding the ability of ILs as processing AIDS particularly in film casting, fiber spinning and spraying, comprehension of thermodynamics and dynamics of polymer chains in ILs, analyzing the hydrodynamic volume of dispersed polymer, polymer-ILs interactions, characterizing the viscoelastic properties and nanophase-ILs interactions in nanocomposite systems, analyzing the plasticization efficiency, and the final properties of the composite system. The rheological analysis is also important for industrial purposes particularly for designing processing techniques and suitable operating conditions for IL based systems. The aim of this review is to give an overview of the rheological properties of pure ionic liquids and solutions, dispersions, gels, composites, and melts based on ionic liquids.

Phytosynthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) has achieved an indispensable significance due to the diverse roles played by biomolecules in directing the physiochemical characteristics of biosynthesized nanoparticles. Therefore, the precise identification of key bioactive compounds involved in producing AuNPs is vital to control their tunable characteristics for potential applications. Herein, qualitative and quantitative determination of key biocompounds contributing to the formation of AuNPs using aqueous Elaeis guineensis leaves extract is reported. Moreover, roles of phenolic compounds and flavonoids in reduction of Au3+ and stabilization of AuNPs have been elucidated by establishing a reaction mechanism. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed shifting of O─H stretching vibrations toward longer wavenumbers and C═O toward shorter wavenumbers due to involvement of polyphenolic compounds in biosynthesis and oxidation of polyphenolic into carboxylic compounds, respectively, which cape nanoparticles to inhibit the aggregation. Congruently, pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed the major contribution of polyphenolic compounds in the synthesis of AuNPs, which was further endorsed by reduction of total phenolic and total flavonoids contents from 48.08 ± 1.98 to 9.59 ± 0.92 mg GAE/g and 32.02 ± 1.31 to 13.8 ± 0.97 mg CE/g within 60 Min, respectively. Based on experimental results, reaction mechanism explained the roles of phenolic compounds and flavonoids in producing spherical-shaped AuNPs.
