Summary: With the development of new generation lighting sources, visible light communication (VLC) system has become a complementary solution to traditional radio frequency wireless system. However, the error performance of VLC system is degraded because of multipath effects and interference from other lighting sources that, in turn, reduce the communication range. This work targets the issue of performance degradation of VLC systems in terms of communication range and demonstrates a VLC system design that utilizes forward error correction (FEC) codes as the main tool to fix this issue. Furthermore, the work also covers practical implementation of the proposed VLC system using UART modules programmed in MATLAB. The hardware results demonstrate that the communication range of the proposed VLC system is enhanced up to 0.5 m. Over and above, it is also shown through simulations that the coding gain of the proposed design is more when compared with existing VLC system(s). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hypertension (HTN) or high blood pressure is a medical condition that accounts 9.4 million deaths all over the world every year. It is leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. It increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, including heart failure, diffuse atherosclerosis, cognitive impairment and dementia. Clinically, synthetic antihypertensive drugs have been used to treat hypertension. However, the efficacy of these drugs is low and also produces side effects which include dry mouth, dizziness, emotional distress, gastrointestinal disturbance, visual disorders etc. These distressing side effects adversely affect health-related quality of life. Therefore, there is a need to search natural, cheaper and non-toxic compound. Plant are widely use in traditional systems of medicine for the treatment of several diseases. About 80% of the world population relies on traditional medicine for primary healthcare. In the last three decades, a lot of research has been done on local medicinal plants for hypotensive and antihypertensive potentials. Plants are the rich source of secondary metabolites which have been found in vivo to have antihypertensive properties. The current study is focused on reviewing the antihypertensive property of medicinal plants and their metabolites. In the current review, we conducted a literature search using Elsevier, Science direct, Springer Link (Springer), Pub Med and Google Scholar. The search included the keywords "plants", "medicinal plants", "plant extracts", cross-referenced with the keywords "hypertension" "antihypertensive activity". The use of plant origin natural compounds as cardio protective and antihypertensive agents is an interesting strategy for discovering bioactive products. Plants are rich in a variety of secondary metabolites, such as flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins and terpenoids. These have been found in vivo to have antihypertensive effects. The present review therefore; stand for a good basis to choose exact molecules belonging to the indicated categories that in the forthcoming future will become useful therapeutic tools. Amoebiasisis an infectious disease, which originated with the single-celled parasitic protozoan Entamoeba histolytica. The parasitic amoeba infects the liver and intestine and may cause mild diarrhea and serious dysentery with bloody and mucoid stool. A study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of Amoebex (400mg), a herbal formulation for the treatment of amoebiasis infections as compared to that of Metronidazole (400mg). The therapeutic evaluations of these medicines were carried out on 184 clinically diagnosed cases of the amoebiasis infection. Sample sizes of Ameobex for this study included a total of 93 patients and for Metronidazole a total of 91 were registered and treated. Comparison of the data recorded for the participants relating to sign and symptoms variables showed significant differences of efficacy between test and control groups (p<0.0357) and no side effects were at all recorded in test group. According to observation, there was a difference in the overall clinical success of both treatment groups, however, the efficacy of the test treated medication (Amoebex) was superior to that of Metronidazole as (p<0.03), and on the basis of the statistical analysis done by the chi square test, the null hypothesis was rejected. 'It is clearly evident that Amoebex possesses therapeutic value for the treatment of amoebiasis associated symptoms but also the eradication rate of amoebiasis is superior by Amoebex as compared to that of Metronidazole (Control drug). Drug-induced liver injury is the leading cause for more than 50 percent of cases of acute liver failure. This study was conducted on herbo-mineral formulation "Hepcon" to evaluate its hepatoprotective effects in drug induced hepatitis in experimental animals. The liver injury was introduced with over dosage of non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). The herbo-mineral formulations "Hepcon" consist of Zingiber officinale, Piprum nigrum, Ammonium chloride and Arsenic trioxide (Hartal warqi). The aqueous extraction was administered to experimental animals. Thereafter their LFTs, IgG, and tissue pathology was studied. It was observed on the basis of biochemical and histopathological analysis that animals which were subjected to Hepcon became normal in 60 days whereas those as control group did not showed improvements and most of them died. It was concluded that the efficacy of Hepcon to treat liver injury caused by CCl4 and NSAIDs is very effective, and no side effects were noticed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent studies on prevalence of urinary tract infection indicate that approximately one third population of the world has been suffering from this disease. The current study was designed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of aqueous-ethanolic extracts (30/70) of Tribulus terrestris (TT), Vaccinium macrocarpon (VM), Cuminum cyminum (CC), Rheum emodi (RE), Piper cubeba (PC) and their compound formulation "Crano-cure" against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Staphylococcus saprophyticus and Proteus mirabilis through disc diffusion method and agar well methods compared with standard Ciprofloxacin. DPPH radical scavenging methods were applied for antioxidant activities and phytochemical analysis was also performed to detect the phytoconstituents. All the plants exhibited potent antibacterial strength while Crano-cure showed most potent results comparable with that of standard drug. The zone of inhibition produced by disk diffusion test was 26±0.34, 26±0.75, 26±0.00, 18±0.64, 22.5±0.52, 29±0.39, 32±0.00 mm and for agar well diffusion test 23±0.67, 22±0.46, 23±0.77, 20±0.00, 22±0.46, 24±0.52, 33±0.00 mm against Tribulus terrestris, Cuminum cyminum, Rheum emodi, Piper cubeba, Vaccinium macrocarpon, crano-cure and ciprofloxacin. Similarly, percentage inhibition for antioxidant potential was 78.74, 24.57, 58.75, 20.23, 88.88, 90.12 and 92.35 respectively. The tested plants exhibited remarkable antibacterial and antioxidant activities.
