The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies has led to a transformation in higher education worldwide. AI tools provide academic support to students anywhere and anytime to enhance their knowledge and skills. Those facing difficulties have been relying on traditional support and guidance. However, this support has experienced difficulties, including availability and accessibility. This study examines the potential of AI-powered tools to address these challenges, aiming to make academic support more accessible, efficient, and effective. This study focuses on understanding the determinants of AI tools' acceptance and use for academic support among students, influencing student satisfaction and academic performance in Pakistan and Malaysia. The research on AI tool acceptance and use in the higher education Institutions (HEI) context is still new and less explored in Pakistani and Malaysian higher education institutions. A theoretical model based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and other factors was employed to identify factors that affect AI tool adoption in higher education. The survey research design was employed, and the total sample size was 305 respondents, with 203 students from Quaid-e-Awam University of Science and Technology (QUEST), Pakistan, and 102 students from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). A "Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) Analysis" was employed to assess the research model and hypotheses using SmartPls 4.0. In Pakistan and Malaysia, students are more concerned about using AI tools to improve their academic performance. The findings indicated that performance and effort expectancy, information accuracy of AI tools, pedagogical fit to meet the student's expectations, and student interaction with tools were important factors in predicting the acceptance and use of AI tools among students of both countries in higher education, and the rising use of these AI tools has improved students' satisfaction levels and significantly impacted students learning outcomes in both countries. Additionally, student engagement and personal innovativeness have not significantly affected the use of AI tools among students in both countries. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of AI tool adoption in the unique contexts of Pakistan and Malaysia, contributing to the broader discourse on technology integration in higher education.

Mobile learning has ushered in a transformative era in education, compelling educational institutions to reimagine their pedagogical approaches. This shift is particularly evident in teacher training programs, where mobile learning is increasingly integrated into traditional education. The success of these integrated systems hinges on educators' willingness to adapt to these evolving paradigms. Nevertheless, a notable gap exists in the research landscape concerning the challenges of adopting mobile learning in teacher training and its consequential impact on teachers' professional capabilities. This study aims to bridge this gap by identifying the factors influencing teachers' satisfaction and performance within mobile learning training courses and establishing the intricate relationships between these variables. This study was conducted in a quantitative research framework and collected data from 563 schoolteachers through an online survey. These respondents were actively engaged in mobile-based training courses at the Provincial Institute for Teacher Education (PITE) Sindh during their mandatory training programs in the academic year 2022-23. Structural equation modeling was employed to analyze the proposed hypotheses rigorously. The study's findings unveil a robust and significant nexus between several critical factors and educators' experiences when utilizing mobile learning for training. Specifically, content quality, information quality, system quality, prior experiences, and mobile self-efficacy contributed strongly to task-technology fit, ultimately enhancing teachers' engagement, and yielding improved outcomes. Moreover, the study elucidates a clear correlation between factors encompassing understanding, Instructors' prompt feedback, teachers' expectations, and instructor quality within the context of training course design. These factors collectively positively influence teachers' satisfaction and performance, enhancing content knowledge, pedagogical skills, and professional dispositions. This holistic approach to mobile learning positively influences teachers' satisfaction and, ultimately, enhances teachers' overall performance. This study provides valuable insights to guide educators, institutions, and policymakers in effectively embracing and implementing mobile learning to benefit teachers and, ultimately, the broader field of education.

Carissa carandas L. is a wild food plant, however, is cultivated for its fruits to be utilized to make pickles, jams, and other similar products. Fruit of this plant has been intensively investigated for its bioactive potential; however, a scanty study is reported on the leaf, which is usually wasted. In the present study, ethanolic extract of the leaf of C. carandas was analyzed for its total bioactive contents and found rich in phenolics and flavonoids (26.67 ± 0.33 mg GAE/g extract and 18.42 ± 0.05 mg RE/g extract, respectively). These findings were substantiated due to UHPLCMS/MS analysis, which disclosed the presence of about 110 secondary metabolites, mostly lignans, flavonoids, and terpenoids. In DPPH and ABTS free radical inhibition assays, the extract showed inhibitory values as 47.51 ± 0.09 and 93.09 ± 2.8 mg TE/g extract, respectively. Its further antioxidant potential was observed in CUPRAC and FRAP assays, wherein the metal reducing power was recorded as 102.05 ± 1.03 and 67.24 ± 0.9 mg TE/g extract, respectively, while in phosphomolybdenum and metal chelating assays, the extract also disclosed potential activity (0.92 ± 0.02 mmol TE/g extract and 21.42 ± 0.34 mg EDTAE/g extract). The extract was also significantly active against tyrosinase (45.69 ± 0.7 mg KAE/g extract) and showed mild activities against AChE (3.61 ± 0.16 mg GALAE/g extract), BChE (1.43 ± 0.2 mg GALAE/g extract), α-amylase (0.46 ± 0.01 mmol ACAE/g extract) and α-glucosidase (1.05 ± 0.02 mmol ACAE/g extract). In computational studies, binding affinities for AChE and BChE enzymes were from −4.21 to −12.70 and −7.58 to −12.53 kcal/mol, respectively, confirming the results of the invitro tests and ADME studies. The current finding suggested that C. carandas may be considered as a source for several nutraceutical formulations.

Abstract Energy is fundamental to all significant human endeavors and is crucial for sustaining life and realizing human potential. With the advent of smart homes, energy consumption is increasing as new technologies are introduced, leading to shifts in both lifestyle and societal norms. This scenario presents a unique energy challenge that requires extraordinary efforts to meet the anticipated energy demands. Various innovative strategies are being implemented to overcome the drawbacks and address the growing consumer demand for energy. Today, smart homes offer much more than just basic functions; they also focus on resource management, energy efficiency, and enhancing quality of life. Machine Learning (ML) plays a vital role in smart homes as it allows for the training, adjustment, and optimization of various functions. This intelligent, purposeful capacity has the potential to turn homes into dynamic and practical environments that improve daily performance, ease, and personalization. In this research, an ML-based multivariate model is proposed utilizing Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) for smart homes, aiming to optimize energy utilization and improve management in the realm of energy consumption. This model offers precise predictions of energy consumption, ensuring minimal random errors. Prominent metrics include a low Mean Squared Error (MSE) of 0.02284, a high Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 0.184, a Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) of 0.123, the lowest Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) at 0.15113, a significant Mean Absolute Scaled Error (MASE) of 0.996, and a strong R-squared value (R2) of 0.694. The proposed model delivers exceptional predictive performance as compared to the previous approaches, ensuring high reliability, which aligns with the standards needed for advancing toward a smart and sustainable future.

Abstract Several bacterial strains have developed resistance against commercial antibiotics, and interestingly, supramolecular nanomaterials have shown considerable advantages for antibacterial applications. However, the main challenges in adopting nanotechnology for antibacterial studies are random aggregation, compromised toxicity, multi-step preparation approaches, and unclear structure-function properties. Herein, we designed the amphiphilic tripeptide that acts as a reducing and capping agent for silver metal to form silver-peptide colloidal nanohybrids with the mild assistance of UV light (254 nm) through the photochemical reduction method. The nanohybrids are characterized by different spectroscopic and microscopic techniques, and non-covalent molecular interactions between metal and peptide building blocks confirm their central role in the formation of nanohybrids. The tripeptide is biocompatible and can reduce the toxicity of silver ions (Ag+) by reducing to Ag0. These colloidal nanohybrids showed antibacterial activity against gram-negative and gram-positive bacterial strains, and the possible mechanism of killing bacterial cells could be membrane disruption. This synthetic strategy is facile and green, which helps avoid using toxic chemicals or reagents and complicated methods for colloidal nanohybrid preparation for biomedical applications.

Research is urgently required to understand COVID-19's impact on international students and satisfaction with support interventions. This study investigated these dimensions for international business students studying in Australia to inform international HE policy and marketing. Qualitative research identified the main impacts: financial hardship and income loss, social and lifestyle changes, cessation of travel, and mental health concerns. Six COVID-19 intervention dimensions were identified and a survey then captured ratings of importance, as well as the performance of CDU and the government across these dimensions. Intervention improvement priorities varied according to the analytical approach used. For example, importance-performance analysis revealed financial support as the priority for improvement. In contrast, regression analysis revealed social distancing as the key driver of intervention satisfaction. Closing the loop research then revealed ways to improve COVID-19 interventions and provided input for future marketing for attracting and maintaining international students. Implications for measuring student satisfaction are also discussed.

Background and objectives. This study aimed to explore the prevalence, severity, and distribution of carotid artery stenosis among patients experiencing ischemic strokes. Materials and methods. This prospective hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted at Bolan Medical Complex Hospital in Quetta, Baluchistan, Pakistan. The research spanned one year, from April 2022 to April 2023, involving 153 patients. Results. The study revealed that individuals in their 50s to 70s were predominantly affected, with the most common CT findings being the right middle cerebral artery (MCA), left MCA, and right posterior cerebral artery (PCA). Among the participants, 19.0% exhibited carotid artery stenosis, with a male predominance. The distribution of stenosis severity included 8.5% with mild, 5.9% with moderate, 3.9% with severe, and 0.7% with total occlusion. The affected anatomical sites were the carotid bulb, common carotid artery, common carotid artery bifurcation, internal carotid artery, and external carotid artery in 7.8%, 5.2%, 2.0%, 2.6%, and 1.3% of patients, respectively. Right-sided stenosis was observed in 9.8% of cases, surpassing left-sided stenosis at 7.2%. Logistic regression analysis did not identify age and gender as significant predictors of stenosis. Conclusions. This study underscores the critical significance of early detection and intervention for carotid artery stenosis in high-risk acute ischemic stroke patients, aiming at stroke prevention.

Abstract Soil heavy metals (HMs) pollution is a growing global concern, mainly in regions with rapid industrial growth. This study assessed the concentrations, potential sources, and health risks of HMs in agricultural soils near marble processing plants in Malakand, Pakistan. A total of 21 soil samples were analyzed for essential and toxic HMs via inductively coupled plasma‒optical emission spectrometry (ICP‒OES), and probabilistic health risks were evaluated via Monte Carlo simulation. The concentrations (mg/kg) of Ca (29,250), P (805.5) and Cd (4.5) exceeded the average shale limits of 22,100, 700, and 3.0 mg/kg, respectively, and indices such as Nemerow’s synthetic contamination index (NSCI) and the geoaccumulation index (Igeo) categorized the soil sites as moderately polluted. The potential ecological risk index (PERI) indicated considerable to high ecological risk for As and Cd. Anterior mandible defects result in loss of support for the tongue, floor of the mouth and lower lip, resulting in impairment of airway, feeding, and speech. We treated four patients with these “Andy Gump” deformities. Reconstruction was performed with two free flaps: a fibula osteocutaneous flap for the anterior mandible and floor of the mouth, and a soft tissue free flap for the lip, chin, and anterior neck. The lower lip was suspended cranially with fascia or tendon grafts ± mini-temporalis turndown flaps. All flaps survived completely. All patients were tube feed-dependent before surgery; they all resumed an oral diet. All tracheostomies were decannulated. Lip competence was restored as evidenced by cessation of drooling. Speech improved from unintelligible to intelligible with frequent repetitions. Objective assessment was performed with the functional intraoral Glasgow scale; the mean FIGS score improved from 3.25 (range 3–4) to 11 (range 9–13). We conclude that composite anterior mandible and tongue defects have large tissue requirements that require multiple free flaps. Reconstruction leads to significant improvement in function.

Abstract Objective This paper addresses the Graeco-Latin square design (GLSD) under neutrosophic statistics. In this work, we propose a novel approach for analyzing Graeco-Latin square designs using uncertain observations. Method This approach involves the determination of a neutrosophic ANOVA and the determination of the neutrosophic hypotheses and decision rule. Results The performance of the proposed design is evaluated using the numerical examples and simulation study. Conclusion Based on the results observed, it can be concluded that the GLSD under neutrosophic statistics performs better than the GLSD under classical statistics in the presence of uncertainty.

Introduction: For knee osteoarthritis, intra-articular injections of Hyaluronic acid and corticosteroid have individually shown promise, nevertheless, the rate at which symptoms improve is a limiting factor for both treatments. Aims and Objectives: To compare mean pain score in patients receiving combination of intra-articular Hyaluronic acid and corticosteroid versus Hyaluronic acid alone in osteoarthritic knee. Place and Duration of Study: The randomized controlled trial was conducted in the Orthopedic Department of Shaikh Zayed Hospital, Lahore, from June 11, 2021, to December 11, 2021. Materials and Methods: The study comprised a total of 64 patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria and after providing informed written consent with 32 patients each assigned to the Hyaluronic acid plus corticosteroid group (Group A) and Hyaluronic acid alone group (Group B). Lottery method was used to randomly divide patients into two groups. Pain was assessed at baseline and at 3 months via visual analog scale. All the data was recorded on preset performa and analyzed via SPSS version 20. Results: Out of 64 patients enrolled in study, 15.6% were male and 34.4% were females in HA+CS group and 12.5% were male and 37.5% were females in HA alone group. Distribution of knee side, 9.4% patients had right while 40.6% had left side in HA + CS group and 23.4% had right while 26.6% had left side in HA alone group. Purpose: This research endeavor aimed to produce composts using banana plant leftovers (stem and leaves) and animal manures (poultry and cattle), and subsequently assess their nutrient concentrations and the resulting impact on bottle gourd growth. Method: Two distinct composts were prepared by utilizing banana plants (stems + leaves) blended with cattle and poultry manure in cemented pits. Afterwards the prepared composts were used as soil amendments. The treatments included T1: control, T2: Recommended NPK, T3: 10-ton compost 1 Banana leaves + Poultry manure T4: 10-ton compost 2 Banana leaves + Cattle manure, T5: 5-ton compost 1 + ½ NPK, and T6: 5 ton compost 2 + ½ NPK. Results: The study revealed that composts significantly improved plant development and yield, with enhanced effectiveness when combined with NPK fertilizers. The treatments led to substantial increases in vine length (25-61%), branch number (25-72%), fruit dimensions, weight (14-79%), and yield (13-55%), with NPK treatment showing the highest gains. The N concentration doubled, while P and K concentrations increased 13-fold and 5-fold, respectively. Both sole and integrated NPK + Compost 2 applications effectively enhanced N concentration, while the highest P and K increases were observed with the sole NPK application, closely followed by the integrated approach. Conclusion: Composting effectively recycled banana plant leftovers, cattle, and poultry manure, producing high-quality compost that significantly enhances growth, yield, and nutrient accumulation in bottle gourd. The combined use of compost and NPK fertilizers outperforms their individual application, suggesting that this integrated nutrient management strategy is ideal for optimizing bottle gourd production in low-fertility soils. The increasing importance of treating industrial effluents for environmental and public health protection has necessitated reliable and economical treatment methods capable of meeting stringent effluent quality standards. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the electrocoagulation (EC) process using iron electrodes for treating real textile wastewater by removing total solids (TS), COD, colour, and turbidity. Various operating parameters, including treatment time, initial pH, current density, stirring speed, and inter-electrode spacing (IES), were investigated to optimize removal efficiency. The results demonstrated that the optimal conditions for maximum pollutant removal were achieved at a treatment time of 60 minutes, a current density of 6.2 mA/cm², a solution pH of 8-8.5, a stirring speed of 150 rpm, and an IES of 5 cm. Under these conditions, the removal efficiencies reached 79.2% for TS, 92.7% for COD, 88.9% for turbidity, and 98.7% for colour. The findings of this research indicate that the EC process is a simple, quick, and economically viable method for effectively removing pollutants from textile wastewater. Additionally, it is recommended that a coupled treatment unit, such as filtration or adsorption, be employed following the EC process to enhance pollutant removal. Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 aims to address environmental pollution from industrial wastewater, including textile wastewater, highlighting the importance of balancing industrial growth with environmental stewardship. Present study offers the first thorough analysis of textile wastewater treatment utilizing EC process in the region, enhancing understanding of effective strategies for sustainability and compliance with effluent quality standards.

Ultrasonic and microwave extraction process has great prospects to convert food and agricultural waste from food industries to value-added goods. Also, this review extensively elaborates the utilization of ultrasonication and microwave extraction (US-MW) process for valorization of dairy waste extracted proteins into novel foods. Both of these extraction and processing techniques are considered as green technologies when compared with the other conventional or chemical extraction and processing techniques. Further, this review also explains the impact of US-MW alone and in combination on the dairy waste proteins extraction, nutritional and techno-functional attributes of these dairy-waste proteins. The review also highlights the economic and cost-effective benefits of US-MW processes for extracting the proteins from dairy waste, indicating their feasibility and sustainability. The review also elucidated the synergistic utilization of US-MW extraction as a viable processing technique in extraction or production of bioactive compounds like dairy proteins. In conclusion, this review elucidates the US-MW, both individually and in synergy as a viable source of dairy waste proteins extraction and their application in functional foods. Moreover, in accordance to the latest developments and future prospects at pilot and commercial level to assess the practicability of synergistic use of US-MW extraction in bioenergy production from food wastes other than dairy waste for extraction and production of biodiesel, hydrogen, green methane, and ethanol.

This research was designed to treat synthetic dyes in aqueous solutions using an atmospheric pressure argon plasma-driven photo-Fenton process. Optical emission spectroscopy and statistical optimization of the argon plasma-driven photo-Fenton process parameters were performed to efficiently degrade synthetic dyes. Lab-scale experiments were performed utilizing an argon plasma jet coupled with a Fenton reagent mixture of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and ferrous ions (Fe2+). Based on the response surface methodology, a statistical Box–Behnken design (BBD) was used to optimize the photo-Fenton process by changing Fe2+ concentration, H2O2 concentration, and plasma treatment time as the control factors. Optical emission spectroscopy was conducted to understand the reactive plasma species in the jet. Boltzmann plot was used to study the plasma temperature. The argon plasma jet contained OH, Ar, N2, and atomic oxygen (O) reactive species and radiations in the visible and ultraviolet range. According to BBD, the maximum dye removal efficiency of 97.01% was possible with 40 mg/l of Fe2+ ions, 200 mg/l of H2O2, and 17.5 min of plasma exposure. The statistical model is well-fitted to a second-order polynomial equation. The optimum conditions for dye degradation were Fe2+ (40 g/l), H2O2 (200 g/l), and a plasma treatment time 23.18 min obtained from the optimizer plot. The statistical model showed a 99.76% fit to the experimental data of dye degradation.

BackgroundT-cell–redirecting therapies, such as bispecific antibodies and chimeric antigen receptor T-cells, exploit the cytotoxic capabilities of the immune system to destroy cells expressing specific surface antigens, including malignant cells. These therapies have demonstrated unprecedented rates, depth, and duration of responses in relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma. However, there are significant challenges in implementing these therapies into practice, which require multidisciplinary and multicenter coordination and significant healthcare resources to effectively manage these patients. So far, there are no Canadian guidelines for the effective implementation and use of T-cell–redirecting therapies.MethodsThis consensus statement was developed based on three advisory meetings held in March, July, and November 2023. During these meetings, a panel of Canadian subject matter experts and representation from Myeloma Canada gathered to discuss the optimal procedures for the use of T-cell–redirecting therapies in the treatment of multiple myeloma. Members of the panel performed a thorough review of randomized clinical trials, real-world data, and other current literature, and provided their up-to-date clinical experience with T-cell–redirecting therapies in Canadian practice settings. Subsequently, asynchronous working groups were appointed to develop unified criteria for patient selection, appraise referral pathways, and devise strategies for management of short-term and long-term adverse events arising from the use of T-cell–redirecting therapies in multiple myeloma.ResultsHere, we present recommendations for optimizing patient selection, referral pathways, and adverse event management in the Canadian practice setting. These recommendations are relevant for hematologists/oncologists, oncology nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other providers who treat patients with multiple myeloma, as well as individuals with multiple myeloma and their care partners. These recommendations will be of interest to clinicians who treat patients with MM at community clinics and hospitals and who may be interested in referring patients for T-cell–redirecting therapy.

We assessed the richness, diversity, composition of the large mammal community in Ghamot National Park (GNP), Neelum valley Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan, and how these characteristics differed between four habitat types: forest, riparian zone, scrubland, and wetland, as well as between seasons. Across all locales with 66 line transect surveys (53km), indirect observation had the highest sampling (n=131; 76.60%) while direct observation had the lowest (n=40; 23.39). Fecal dropping was the most common type of indirect evidence (n=73; 55.72%), followed by foot prints (n=29; 9.94%) and dens/latrine (n=19; 14.50%). The Scrubland zone had the most indirect evidences (n=37) of any zone (elevation ranges between 2600-3600m).The forest zone (elevation ranges between 2700-3450m) had the second highest sampling (n=28), followed by the Alpine Zone (n=28), Riparian Zone (n=21), and Alpine Pasture Zone (n=16) (elevation 4000-4400m; habitat type high alpine pastures). By using direct and indirect field evidence, 14 species from 6 families were identified. Unfortunately, the number of species encountered directly was low in this study; four species (28.57%) were directly observed, including Canis aureus, Vulpes vulpes, Macaca mulatta, and Semnopithecus ajax, while the remaining ten (71.42%) were observed indirectly. Summer had the most direct and indirect observations (n=86; 50.29%), followed by winter (n=85; 49.70%). (4.28). Season had little effect on species richness, diversity, and composition across or within habitat types. However, the richness of species varied greatly across seasons among the four habitat types. The forest and riparian zone had the greatest similarity in species composition, both between and among seasons. Finally, our findings show that GNP has an essential influence in Pakistan mammal conservation. Our findings will provide as a baseline for park management to make effective conservation decisions, as well as a baseline for researchers conducting similar ecological studies.

The present study reports the design and synthesis of new benzimidazole-oxadiazole compounds as potent inhibitors of α-glucosidase and α-amylase. The synthesized molecules were characterized through different techniques such as 1HNMR, 13CNMR, HREI-MS and evaluated for their in vitro inhibitory activities against these enzymes. Among the compounds screened, compound 8 demonstrated the highest inhibitory activity against both α-glucosidase (IC50 = 11.60 µM) and α-amylase (IC50 = 6.20 µM). Molecular docking analyses were conducted to investigate the binding modes and interactions of the active compounds within the enzyme active sites. The results demonstrate that several benzimidazole-oxadiazole hybrids exhibited potent inhibitory effects on both α-glucosidase and α-amylase, suggesting their promise as antidiabetic agents.

Building on the dynamic capability perspective, this study investigates effective digitalization and digital transformation strategies in the tech industry by highlighting the relevance of the digital divide among developed and developing economies. Further, the study identifies the key challenges, opportunities, and strategies for digitalization and digital transformation. The study embraced a qualitative approach for in-depth exploration of the phenomenon through a comparative study of two countries, i.e., Hong Kong and Pakistan. Data was collected using interviews and analyzed using content analysis to identify recurring patterns and critical insights for meaningful interpretations to address the study objective. We proposed a framework for effective digitalization and digital transformation in the tech industry from the perspective of developed and developing economies. The strategies identified in this research are categorized in technopreneurship and improved human resource practices to address the challenges faced by both developed and developing countries. The study findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the digital transformation phenomenon in the wake of changing workforce dynamics and technological disruptions, as well as the digital divide between developed and developing countries. Further, the study will help policymakers devise and implement resilient strategies in the tech industry, to help reduce the digital divide.

Abstract The aim of the experiment was to evaluate the potential of promising summer maize genotypes and optimal stage of harvesting these genotypes for ensiling in terms of dry matter (DM), starch, and crude protein (CP) yields, silage fermentation quality, nutrients profile, total digestible nutrients, metabolizable energy (ME) content, Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System (CNCPS) carbohydrate (CHO) subfractions composition, in vitro DM digestibility (DMD) and in situ starch degradation characteristics. Six maize genotypes were chosen for the study: DK9108 from Monsanto, P30Y87, P3939 from Pioneer, QPM-300 (quality protein maize) and W94 from the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), and a local cultivar, Afgoii, from the Cereal Research Institute (Persabaq, KP). In this study, we harnessed the properties of desert plants to synthesize silver nanoparticles to explore potential antimicrobial solutions. Chrozophora plicata and Heliotropium curassavicum extracts were used as green reducing agents to transform silver ions into nanoparticles. Our findings revealed novel properties of C. plicata, which have not been reported before. Surface plasmon resonance peak at 453.6 and 431 nm for C. plicata and H. curassavicum, respectively, via ultraviolet (UV) spectral analysis evidenced the successful fabrication of silver nanoparticles with particle sizes ranging from 4.3–8 and 3.1–6.97 nm respectively, which was validated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the crystal structure of these nanoparticles had a face-centered cubic geometry. Fourier transform infrared spectrometry of the plant extract showed strong signals corresponding to carbohydrates, proteins, and phenolics. Antibacterial assays of the silver nanoparticles from C. plicata displayed zones of inhibition at 5 and 4 mm against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, respectively. Meanwhile, the silver nanoparticles from H. curassavicum exhibited zones of inhibition against both pathogens at 10 and 7 mm, respectively. The test samples were substantial inhibitors of S. aureus and E. coli biofilm formation since these displayed IC50 values in the range of 8.88–10.57 mg/mL, which is as potent as the reference ciprofloxacin. Consequently, the silver nanoparticles derived from these desert plants can be potential drug candidates for treating respiratory and digestive tract infections alone or in combination with existing antibiotics.

Soil pollution caused by heavy metal(oid)s has generated great concern worldwide due to their toxicity, persistence, and bio-accumulation properties. To assess the baseline data, the heavy metal(oid)s, including manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), Cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), chromium (Cr), and cadmium (Cd), were evaluated in surface soil samples collected from the farmlands of Grand Forks County, North Dakota. Samples were digested via acid mixture and analyzed via inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP MS) analysis to assess the levels, ecological risks, and possible sources. The heavy metal(oid) median levels exhibited the following decreasing trend: Fe > Mn > Zn > Ni > Cr > Cu > Pb > Co > As > Cd > Hg. Principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) suggested the main lithogenic source for the studied metal(oid)s. Metal(oid) levels in the current investigation, except Mn, are lower than most of the guideline values set by international agencies. The contamination factor (Cf), geo accumulation index (Igeo) and enrichment factor (EF) showed considerable contamination, moderate contamination, and significant enrichment, respectively, for As and Cd on median value basis. Ecological risk factor (Er) results exhibited low ecological risk for all studied metal(oid)s except Cd, which showed considerable ecological risk. The potential ecological risk index (PERI) levels indicated low ecological risk to considerable risk. Overall, the results indicate the accumulation of As and Cd in the study area. The high nutrients of the soils potentially affect their accumulation in crops and impact on consumers’ health. This drives the impetus for continued environmental monitoring programs.

Abstract A serious environmental problem that threatens soil quality, agricultural productivity, and food safety is heavy metal pollution in water sources. Heavy metal pollution is the main problem in tehsil Pasrur, Sialkot, Pakistan. Present study was arranged to notice the heavy metals in water, soil, forages and buffalo milk. There are seven sites that were used for this experiment. Highest malondialdehyde (MDA) contents (3.00 ± 0.01) were noticed in barseem roots at site 7. Ascorbate Peroxidase (APX) was reached at its peak (1.93 ± 0.01) at site 7 in the fresh barseem. Maximum protein contents (0.36 ± 0.01) were observed in fresh plant samples at site 2. Site 3's buffalo milk samples had the highest Ni content (7.22 ± 0.33 ppm), while Site 3's soil samples had the lowest Cr content (8.89 ± 0.56 ppm), Site 1's plant shoots had the lowest Cr content (27.75 ± 1.98 ppm), and Site 3's water had the highest Cr content (40.07 ± 0.49 ppm). The maximum fat content (5.38 ± 2.32%) was found in the milk of the animals at site 7. The highest density (31.88 ± 6.501%), protein content (3.64 ± 0.33%), lactose content (5.54 ± 0.320%), salt content (0.66 ± 0.1673%), and freezing point (− 0.5814 ± 0.1827 °C) were also observed in the milk from animals at site 7, whereas site 5 displayed the highest water content (0.66 ± 0.1673%) and peak pH value (11.64 ± 0.09). In selected samples, the pollution load index for Ni (which ranged from 0.01 to 1.03 mg/kg) was greater than 1. Site 7 has the highest conductivity value (5.48 ± 0.48). Values for the health risk index varied from 0.000151 to 1.00010 mg/kg, suggesting that eating tainted animal feed may pose health concerns. Significant health concerns arise from metal deposition in the food chain from soil to feed, with nickel having the highest health risk index.

Abstract Tanacetum falconeri is a significant flowering plant that possesses cytotoxic, insecticidal, antibacterial, and phytotoxic properties. Its chemodiversity and bioactivities, however, have not been thoroughly investigated. In this work, several extracts from various parts of T. falconeri were assessed for their chemical profile, antioxidant activity, and potential for enzyme inhibition. The total phenolic contents of T. falconeri varied from 40.28 ± 0.47 mg GAE/g to 11.92 ± 0.22 mg GAE/g in various extracts, while flavonoid contents were found highest in TFFM (36.79 ± 0.36 mg QE/g extract) and lowest (11.08 ± 0.22 mg QE/g extract) in TFSC (chloroform extract of stem) in similar pattern as found in total phenolic contents. Highest DPPH inhibition was observed for TFFC (49.58 ± 0.11 mg TE/g extract) and TFSM (46.33 ± 0.10 mg TE/g extract), whereas, TFSM was also potentially active against (98.95 ± 0.57 mg TE/g) ABTS radical. In addition, TFSM was also most active in metal reducing assays: CUPRAC (151.76 ± 1.59 mg TE/g extract) and FRAP (101.30 ± 0.32 mg TE/g extract). In phosphomolybdenum assay, the highest activity was found for TFFE (1.71 ± 0.03 mg TE/g extract), TFSM (1.64 ± 0.035 mg TE/g extract), TFSH (1.60 ± 0.033 mg TE/g extract) and TFFH (1.58 ± 0.08 mg TE/g extract), while highest metal chelating activity was recorded for TFSH (25.93 ± 0.79 mg EDTAE/g extract), TFSE (22.90 ± 1.12 mg EDTAE/g extract) and TFSC (19.31 ± 0.50 mg EDTAE/g extract). In biological screening, all extracts had stronger inhibitory capacity against AChE while in case of BChE the chloroform extract of flower (TFFC) and stem (TFSC) showed the highest activities with inhibitory values of 2.57 ± 0.24 and 2.10 ± 0.18 respectively. Similarly, TFFC and TFSC had stronger inhibitory capacity (1.09 ± 0.015 and 1.08 ± 0.002 mmol ACAE/g extract) against α-Amylase and (0.50 ± 0.02 and 0.55 ± 0.02 mmol ACAE/g extract) α-Glucosidase. UHPLC-MS study of methanolic extract revealed the presence of 133 components including sterols, triterpenes, flavonoids, alkaloids, and coumarins. The total phenolic contents were substantially linked with all antioxidant assays in multivariate analysis. These findings were validated by docking investigations, which revealed that the selected compounds exhibited high binding free energy with the enzymes tested. Finally, it was found that T. falconeri is a viable industrial crop with potential use in the production of functional goods and nutraceuticals.

In our continuous efforts to find out leads against the enzyme 15-lipoxygenase (15-LOX), the current study deals with the synthesis of a series of new N-alkyl/aralkyl/aryl derivatives of 2-(4-ethyl-5-(1-phenylcarbamoyl)piperidine-4H-1,2,4-triazol-3-ylthio)methylacetamide (7a-n) with anti-LOX activities. The synthesis was started by reacting phenylisocyanate with isonipecotate that sequentially converted into N-substituted ester (1), hydrazide (2), semicarbazide (3) and N-ethylated 5-(1-phenylcarbamoyl)piperidine-1,2,4-triazole (4). The final compounds, 7a-n, were obtained by reacting 4 with various N-alkyl/aralkyl/aryl electrophiles. Both the intermediates and target compounds were characterized by FTIR, 1H, 13C NMR spectroscopy, EI-MS and HR-EI-MS spectrometry and screened against soybean 15-LOX by chemiluminescence method. The eight compounds 7e, 7j, 7h, 7a, 7g, 7b, 7n, 7c showed potent inhibitory activities against 15-LOX with values ranging from IC50 0.36 ± 0.15 μM (7e) to IC50 6.75 ± 0.17 μM (7c) compared with the reference quercetin (IC50 4.86 ± 0.14 μM) and baicalein (IC50 2.24 ± 0.13 μM). Two analogues (7l, 7f) had significantly outstanding inhibitory potential with IC50 values 12.15 ± 0.23 μM and 15.54 ± 0.26 μM, whereas, the derivatives 7i, and 7d displayed IC50 values of 21.56 ± 0.27 μM, 23.59 ± 0.24 μM and the compounds 7k, 7m were found inactive. All analogues exhibited blood mononuclear cells (MNCs) viability >75 % at 0.25 mM concentration as determined by MTT method. Calculated pharmacokinetic properties projected good lipophilicity, bioavailability and drug-likeness properties and did not violate Lipinski's/Veber rule. Molecular docking studies revealed lower binding free energies of all the derivatives than the reference compounds. The binding free energies were −9.8 kcal/mol, −9.70 k/mol and −9.20 kcal/mol for 7j, 7h and 7e, respectively, compared with the standard quercetin (−8.47 kcal/mol) and baicalein (−8.98 kcal/mol). The docked ligands formed hydrogen bonds with the amino acid residues Gln598 (7e), Arg260, Val 126 (7h), Gln762, Gln574, Thr443, Arg580 (7j) while other hydrophobic interactions observed therein further stabilized the complexes. The results of density functional theory (DFT) revealed that analogues with more stabilized lower unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) had significant enzyme inhibitory activity. The data collectively supports these molecules as leads against 15-LOX and demand further investigations as anti-inflammatory agents.

The major commercial crops in Pakistan are citrus fruit trees, which are farmed extensively and serve as the country's principal source of foreign exchange. A local citrus plant, Citrus paradisi, variety Foster is famous for its valuable fruit and fruit juice, however, tons of peels of this fruit are thrown as waste, which otherwise can be utilized in formulating nutraceutical and cosmetics. In the present study, essential oil of fruit peels was obtained through hydro-distillation, which was then analyzed through GC-MS analysis and studied for its antioxidant and enzyme inhibition potential. GCMS analysis revealed the presence of several components; major were found to be limonene, α-terpineol, caryophyllene, δ-amorphene, elemol, γ-eudesoml, nootkatone and di-isooctyl phthalate. Although, the oil showed weak free radical inhibition, it was potentially active in CUPRAC, FRAP, phosphomolybdenum and metal chelating antioxidant assays. The oil also exhibited anti-glucosidase, anti-amylase activities and also exhibited potent inhibition of the enzyme tyrosinase, which makes it strong candidate for nutraceuticals and skin care products. The docking studies also substantiate our results and caryophyllene, γ-eudesoml and nootkatone showed good binding affinity α-glucosidase and α-amylase and all tested compounds showed the higher binding affinity towards the enzyme tyrosinase.
