1. 'To Engage or Not To': Translating Civic Education to Civic Engagement

Abstract

This paper draws from a broader study on citizenship education in Western Uganda to explain how civic education knowledge translates into civic engagement through people's lived experiences. The paper addresses two questions, that is the contextual understandings of civic education and civic engagement by the partner NGO. Secondly, what explains people's decision to engage or not to engage. We employed critical research methodologies with multiple data collection methods as a means of empowering rural community members to dialogue with stakeholders in civic education. We present the findings based on three themes, that is rationality, power dynamics, and mutual interests. We draw on Rational Choice Theory to theorise reasons for civic engagement. We particularly argue that drivers for and against civic engagement are largely individual and driven by assumed benefits and losses. Individual assumptions can also translate to group or larger social conclaves based on common drivers, beliefs and interests. We conclude by noting that actors in civic education and awareness programmes ought to note that civic engagement is rooted in individual rationality albeit contextual.

4. Childhood Hodgkin Lymphoma in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Systematic Review on the Effectiveness of the Use of Chemotherapy Alone

Abstract

Introduction. Childhood Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is often curable, but in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), access to standard treatments like combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy is limited. This study aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of using chemotherapy alone for children with HL in SSA. Methods. We searched Medline, Embase, Cinahl Plus and Cochrane Central databases for records of studies that evaluated childhood HL survival outcomes from January 2000 to December 2022. Results. Six observational studies were identified for inclusion, and 3 were included in the meta-analysis. Most HL cases included in the analysis presented with lymphadenopathy and the nodular sclerosing subtype, with a high percentage (80%) in advanced stages. The GRADE certainty of the evidence for the assessed outcomes was rated as very low. Overall survival with chemotherapy was 67.8% (95% CI: 42.1%-88.8%). Conclusion. Chemotherapy is a potential treatment choice for childhood HL in SSA. However, it is crucial to approach this option cautiously due to the limited certainty of the supporting evidence. To improve outcomes for affected children in SSA, more robust studies are needed, along with a focus on early detection and supportive care.

Abstract

For power grid operators, knowing the transient response of the synchronous generators (SGs) included in their grids is important in order to simulate and monitor faults and other contingencies. However, the time constant of the automatic voltage regulator (AVR) and speed governors of SGs are not fast enough to show their transient dynamics in the case of a fault in the grid. This paper presents a fieldwork carried out in more than 60 gas power plants, where the response of their controllers was studied. These power plants are running and supplying electricity to the Spanish grid. The study consists of recording some SG responses in different situations, varying the AVR or the speed governor setpoints while the generator is running at no-load conditions, and also performing load rejection tests, achieving a real fault emulation. Once all the data are gathered, a fitting of the SG parameters is performed by computer simulations using GENSAL, GAST and SEXS models replicating the performed field tests. This work allows us to build an accurate network model for the whole power system and check which plants are having trouble in the case of contingencies in the grid.

8. Service-Learning: A Survey of Experiences in Spain

Abstract

Service-learning is a teaching methodology that promotes students' learning through active participation in experiences of community service. This methodology allows students to engage directly with those to whom it offers a needs- and context-adapted service, very often outside the classroom. While there are numerous projects that follow the service-learning methodology, surveys of experiences carried out at higher education level remain scarce. We performed a survey study with 424 undergraduate students participating in service-learning projects in order to identify the type and level of student participation, the skills and competences acquired; the characteristics of services provided; and the levels of satisfaction of students taking part. We found that the students had a positive perception of the effects of their participation; that the skills and competences developed were primarily teamwork, ethical commitment, adapting to new situations and problem-solving; and that the usefulness of the service was mainly in moral development and commitment.

Abstract

Background It is uncertain whether individualisation of the perioperative open-lung approach (OLA) to ventilation reduces postoperative pulmonary complications in patients undergoing lung resection. We compared a perioperative individualised OLA (iOLA) ventilation strategy with standard lung-protective ventilation in patients undergoing thoracic surgery with one-lung ventilation. Methods This multicentre, randomised controlled trial enrolled patients scheduled for open or video-assisted thoracic surgery using one-lung ventilation in 25 participating hospitals in Spain, Italy, Turkey, Egypt, and Ecuador. Eligible adult patients (age >= 18 years) were randomly assigned to receive iOLA or standard lung-protective ventilation. Eligible patients (stratified by centre) were randomly assigned online by local principal investigators, with an allocation ratio of 1:1. Treatment with iOLA included an alveolar recruitment manoeuvre to 40 cm H2O of end-inspiratory pressure followed by individualised positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) titrated to best respiratory system compliance, and individualised postoperative respiratory support with high-flow oxygen therapy. Participants allocated to standard lungprotective ventilation received combined intraoperative 4 cm H2O of PEEP and postoperative conventional oxygen therapy. The primary outcome was a composite of severe postoperative pulmonary complications within the first 7 postoperative days, including atelectasis requiring bronchoscopy, severe respiratory failure, contralateral pneumothorax, early extubation failure (rescue with continuous positive airway pressure, non-invasive ventilation, invasive mechanical ventilation, or reintubation), acute respiratory distress syndrome, pulmonary infection, bronchopleural fistula, and pleural empyema. Abstract

Este trabajo se realizó como una experiencia de profesores de la Universidad de Camagüey y de la Universidad ISA en República Dominicana, Santiago de los Caballeros, en la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales y Administración, con el objetivo de aplicar estrategias metodológicas para el desarrollo de competencias en Anatomía humana para cinco grupos del 8vo cuatrimestre de la Licenciatura en Educación, Concentración Ciencias de la Naturaleza, de enero a abril del 2018. La investigación se caracterizó por seguir una metodología mixta, basada en dos encuestas, la inicial y la final, a una muestra de 91 alumnos, de una población de 162, la observación durante la aplicación de las prácticas a toda la población y el análisis estadístico de los resultados en las evaluaciones, se aplicaron 23 técnicas participativas y el análisis de 7 situaciones problemas, se logró el desarrollo de las 10 competencias de Anatomía y el perfeccionamiento de los resultados docentes de los estudiantes llegando a la conclusión que la aplicación de las estrategias fue relevante en el proceso de enseñanza aprendizaje. Abstract

Las clínicas jurídicas son parte de las Facultades de Derecho que utilizan una metodología de enseñanza basada en el aprendizaje-servicio, con un doble objetivo: hacer eficaz el aprendizaje del Derecho en su dimensión más práctica, a la vez que desarrollar una actividad de servicio y compromiso con la sociedad. El objetivo de la Clínica Jurídica Loiola es conformar profesionales comprometidos con la justicia social desarrollando prácticas jurídicas comprometidas, en las que el estudiante se reconoce como agente de transformación, consciente de su capacidad de incidir en la realidad transformándola. Para ello estamos construyendo espacios de formación teórico-práctica, orientados a prestar un servicio a la comunidad desde el compromiso con la justicia social, resaltando la interdisciplinariedad de experiencias y conocimientos. Presentamos los retos y avances realizados a lo largo de los tres años de vida de la Clínica Jurídica Loiola de la Facultad de Derecho en la Universidad de Deusto. Legal clinics are a part of Law Schools that use a teaching methodology based on service-learning, with a twin goal: to make effective the learning of Law in its most practical dimension, while developing a commitment to society and service activity. The aim of Loiola Legal Clinic is to shape professionals committed to social justice by developing a committed legal practice, in which the student recognizes himself/herself as an agent of transformation, aware of his capacity to influence reality and transform it. To this end, we are building spaces of theoretical and practical training, oriented to provide a service to the community from the commitment to social justice, highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of experiences and knowledge. Abstract

La presente investigación se efectuó con el objetivo de evaluar el impacto de la introducción y generalización del resultado científico: La educación en valores mediante la aplicación de medios de enseñanza - aprendizaje en la disciplina de Morfofisiología en la Licenciatura en Enfermería, a través de indicadores diseñados de acuerdo a las particularidades de la investigación. Se aplicaron encuestas, se realizó revisión de bibliografía relacionada con la temática y de documentos de los departamentos e instituciones en que ha incidido este resultado, lo cual permitió constatar la amplia y efectiva aplicación práctica de los resultados obtenidos de forma sistemática, a través de publicaciones, posgrados, presentación en eventos científicos y su generalización en diversas instituciones educacionales.

Abstract

El Estado social es un tipo histórico de Estado que ha profundizado y ampliado la vertiente social de los Estados liberales, y su eficacia y profundidad dependen de la regulación constitucional y los valores y principios de la estrategia económica. Así, desde la crisis financiera de 2008, la UE ha intensificado la presencia y relevancia de los objetivos sociales en su estrategia económica, presentándolos como necesarios para el éxito económico y político del proyecto europeo. Entre las lecciones aprendidasdestaca el cambio de paradigma fiscal y la movilización de instrumentos para corregir las desigualdades, aunque se necesita una mayor coordinación de los Estados miembros. En este sentido, se propone el refuerzo de la gobernanza social y la implementación del Pilar Europeo de Derechos Sociales y la reforma del Semestre Europeo. A la hora de medir, en los últimos 30 años se han creado índices para medir el bienestar, el desarrollo humano, la felicidad y la calidad de vida de las personas, y se ha propuesto una medición de la justicia social en base a la prevención de la pobreza, el acceso a la educación y al mercado laboral, la inclusión social y no discriminación, la salud y la justicia intergeneracional. Chile se incorporó a esta medición en 2019 y tiene margen de mejora en algunas dimensiones. 40. Synchronous Generator Stability Characterization for Gas Power Plants Using Load Rejection Tests

Abstract

For power grid operators, knowing the transient response of the synchronous generators (SGs) included in their grids is important in order to simulate and monitor faults and other contingencies. However, the time constant of the automatic voltage regulator (AVR) and speed governors of SGs are not fast enough to show their transient dynamics in the case of a fault in the grid. This paper presents a fieldwork carried out in more than 60 gas power plants, where the response of their controllers was studied. These power plants are running and supplying electricity to the Spanish grid. The study consists of recording some SG responses in different situations, varying the AVR or the speed governor setpoints while the generator is running at no-load conditions, and also performing load rejection tests, achieving a real fault emulation. Once all the data are gathered, a fitting of the SG parameters is performed by computer simulations using GENSAL, GAST and SEXS models replicating the performed field tests. This work allows us to build an accurate network model for the whole power system and check which plants are having trouble in the case of contingencies in the grid.
