Bahco metallurgical industry for toolmaking needed an effluentfinal stage treatment. A large land area was available in thefactory facilities and costs for maintance and operation ofwatewater treatment are limiting factors in Argentina. In addition,sewage from the factory also required a final treatment.A FWS wetland was constructed. This type of TW was selecteddue to the efficiency in metal removal and the low costs foroperation and maintenance. Although FWSs requires a largearea, this is not a problem in this case. Industrial wastewatercontaining metals and sewage from the factory are treatedtogether, both after a primary treatment (25 m3 d-1 of sewage +75 m3 d-1 of industrial wastewater). Se estudió la tolerancia y eficiencia de Typha domingensis en la retención de metales y nutrientes de efluentes industriales. Se monitoreó un humedal construido, determinando metales y nutrientes en diferentes órganos vegetales, en los efluentes y en el sedimento de la zona de entrada y de salida, así como también la tolerancia de las plantas a las condiciones del sistema. En experiencias de invernadero, se evalúo la respuesta de T. domingensis al ser expuesta a condiciones extremas de pH y salinidad y a diferentes concentraciones de metales y la capacidad de biosorber metales en sus hojas secas. Las plantas del humedal construido adquirieron adaptaciones fisiológicas y morfológicas para tolerar elevados valores de pH y salinidad, demostradas por una mayor tasa de crecimiento relativo y un incremento en la concentración de clorofila, en comparación con los obtenidos en plantas provenientes de un humedal natural expuestas a las mismas condiciones. La alta eficiencia de remoción de metales por hojas secas de T. domingensis, alcanzada en soluciones multimetales permitiría proponer que las hojas de esta especie sean cosechadas durante las operaciones de mantenimiento de un wetland construido, dándole una disposición final a estos residuos. T. domingensis demostró una alta eficiencia en la retención de metales y nutrientes y una elevada tolerancia a las condiciones de los efluentes tratados debido a su capacidad de adaptación. The tolerance and efficiency of Typha domingensis in the retention of metals and nutrients from industrial effluents were studied. A constructed wetland was monitored by determining metals and nutrients in different plant organs, and in effluents and sediments of the inlet and outlet zones, as well as, the plant tolerance to the conditions of the system was studied. In greenhouse experiments the responses to extreme conditions to pH and salinity and to different metal concentrations were evaluated. The capacity of metal biosorption by dry leaves was evaluated. Regarding salinity and pH, it was probed that the plants from the constructed wetland acquired physiological and morphological adaptations to tolerate high values. The adaptations of the plants from the constructed wetland were demonstrated by a higher relative growth rate and an increase in the chlorophyll concentration in comparison with the values obtained in plants from a natural wetland exposed to the same conditions. The high efficiency in metal removal achieved in multimetal solutions would propose that when the leaves of T. domingensis are harvested during the maintenance of a constructed wetland, this material could be used as an efficient biosorbent, giving a final disposal of these wastes. T. domingensis proved a high efficiency in the nutrient and metal retention and a high tolerance to the conditions of the treated effluents due to its adaptation ability. A free water surface wetland was built in 2002 to treat wastewater from a tool factory containing metals (Cr, Ni, Zn and Fe), nutrients and organic matter. Until 2006, the last reported period, the wetland retained metals and stored them primarily in the bottom sediment and in the biomass of macrophytes secondarily. The aim of this work was to study metal retention and distribution in the sediment of a constructed wetland for industrial wastewater treatment. Total concentrations and fractions (exchangeable, carbonate-bound, Fe-Mn oxides-bound, organic matter-bound and residual) of metals in sediment were analyzed in this treatment wetland, in order to estimate the fate of metals over time. Metal concentrations were significantly higher in the inlet than in the outlet sediment; concentrations in the latter remained without significant differences throughout the testing period. Metal concentrations and redox potential decreased with depth within the sediment. The lowest metal concentrations and pH and the highest redox values were attained in spring, in agreement with the period of maximum macrophyte growth. Ni and Zn were mainly stored associated with the carbonate fraction; Cr was mainly associated with the Fe-Mn oxides fraction, while Fe was mainly associated with the residual fraction, probably as pyrite. The incoming wastewater composition containing high pH, carbonate, calcium and Fe concentrations favored the observed association in the surface sediment. It would be expected that sediment will continue retaining metals in fractions that will not release them into the water while the chemical and environmental conditions remain unchanged.
