Abstract

The OPERA experiment reached its main goal by proving the appearance of vτ in the CNGS vμ beam. Five vτ candidates were detected with a S/B ratio of ∼ 10, allowing to reject the null hypothesis at 5.1σ. The search has been extended by loosening the selection criteria in order to improve the statistical uncertainty. One of the vτ candidates selected with the new strategy shows a double vertex topology and, after a dedicated multivariate analysis, is compatible with being a vTτ interaction with charm production. Based on the enlarged data sample the estimation of Δm223 in appearance mode is being performed. The search for ve interactions has been extended over the full data set with a more than twofold increase in statistics: data are compatible with the non-oscillation hypothesis in the three-flavour mixing model. The implications of the electron neutrino sample in the framework of the 3+1 sterile mode will lead to exclusion limits on sin2 2θμe. Finally, the analysis of the annual modulation of cosmic muons is introduced.

Abstract

A precision measurement of the double-differential production cross-section, d2σπ+/d p dΩ, for pions of positive charge, performed in the HARP experiment is presented. The incident particles are protons of 12.9 GeV/c momentum impinging on an aluminium target of 5% nuclear interaction length. The measurement of this cross-section has a direct application to the calculation of the neutrino flux of the K2K experiment. After cuts, 210 000 secondary tracks reconstructed in the forward spectrometer were used in this analysis. The results are given for secondaries within a momentum range from 0.75 to 6.5 GeV/c, and within an angular range from 30 mrad to 210 mrad. The absolute normalization was performed using prescaled beam triggers counting protons on target. The overall scale of the cross-section is known to better than 6%, while the average point-to-point error is 8.2%. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

In spring 2012 CERN provided two weeks of a short bunch proton beam dedicated to the neutrino velocity measurement over a distance of 730 km. The OPERA neutrino experiment at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory used an upgraded setup compared to the 2011 measurements, improving the measurement time accuracy. An independent timing system based on the Resistive Plate Chambers was exploited providing a time accuracy of similar to 1 ns. Neutrino and anti-neutrino contribution were separated using the information provided by the OPERA magnetic spectrometers. The new analysis profited from the precision geodesy measurements of the neutrino beaseline and of the CNGS/LNGS clock synchronization. The neutrino arrival time with respect to the one computed assuming the speed of light in vacuum is found to be delta t(nu) equivalent to TOFc - TOF nu = (0.6 +/- 0.4 (stat.)+/- 3.0 (syst.)) and delta t((nu) over bar) equivalent to TOFc-TOF(nu) over bar = (1.7 +/- 1.4 (stat.)+/- 3.1 (syst.)) ns for nu(mu) and (nu) over bar (mu), respectively. This corresponds to a limit on the muon neutrino velocity with respect to the speed of light of -1.8 x 10(-6) < (V-nu - c)/c < 2.3 x 10(-6) at 90% C.L. This new measurement confirms with higher accuracy the revised OPERA result

6. Excess of continuum dimuon production at masses between threshold and the J/Psi in S-W interactions at 200 GeV/c/nucleon

Abstract

Results are presented on dimuon production for invariant masses ranging from the dimuon threshold up to the J/Psi meson. Proton-tungsten and sulphur-tungsten interactions at 200 GeV/c/nucleon were measured over a large kinematic region, using the HELIOS/3 dimuon spectrometer at the CERN SPS. In the continuum regions between the dimuon threshold and the rho/omega mesons, and between the phi and J/Psi mesons, an excess is observed in S-W interactions relative to minimum bias p-W interactions. The observed excess is continuous over the explored mass range and has no apparent resonant structure. In the low mass region the dimuon yield increases by (76 +/- 4)% of the corresponding p-W dimuon spectrum, whereas in the higher mass region the excess amounts to 2.4 +/- 0.3 times the p-W yield. The observed excess for the low mass region follows an exponential transverse mass distribution with an average inverse slope parameter T of (190 +/- 5) MeV/c(2), constant for all but the lowest charged multiplicity interval and consistent with the slope of the excess in the higher mass region. In the invariant mass range of 1.35-2.5 GeV/c(2) the continuum dimuon mass distribution observed in p-W interactions can be quantitatively understood as a sum of three expected contributions (vector meson decays, semileptonic charm decays and Drell-Yan process), but both in central and in minimum bias S-W interactions an excess is observed with respect to these sources which does not depend on centrality, nor very strongly on the transverse momentum.

Abstract

Lambda, Xi and Omega yields and transverse mass spectra have been measured in Pb-Pb and p-Pb collisions at 158 A GeV/c. The yields in Pb-Pb interactions are presented as a function of the collision centrality and compared with those obtained from p-Pb collisions. Strangeness enhancement is observed which increases with centrality and with the strangeness content of the hyperon.

8. Enhancement of central Delta, Xi and Omega yields in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 A GeV/c

Abstract

Lambda, Xi and Omega yields and transverse mass spectra have been measured in Pb-Pb and p-Pb collisions at 158 A GeV/c. The yields in Pb-Pb interactions are presented as a function of the collision centrality and compared with those obtained from p-Pb collisions. Strangeness enhancement is observed which increases with centrality and with the strangeness content of the hyperon. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The OPERA neutrino detector at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) was designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in appearance mode, through the study of nu_mu --> nu_tau oscillations. The apparatus consists of a lead/emulsion-film target complemented by electronic detectors. It is placed in the high-energy, long-baseline CERN to LNGS beam (CNGS) 730 km away from the neutrino source. In August 2006, a first run with CNGS neutrinos was successfully conducted. A first sample of neutrino events was collected, statistically consistent with the integrated beam intensity. After a brief description of the beam and of the various sub-detectors, we report on the achievement of this milestone, presenting the first data and some analysis results.

Abstract

HARP is a high-statistics, large solid angle experiment to measure hadron production using proton and pion beams with momenta between 1.5 and 15 GeV/c impinging on many different solid and liquid targets from low to high Z. The experiment, located in the T9 beam of the CERN PS, took data in 2001 and 2002. For the measurement of momenta of produced particles and for the identification of particle types, the experiment includes a large-angle spectrometer, based on a Time Projection Chamber and a system of Resistive Plate Chambers, and a forward spectrometer equipped with a set of large drift chambers, a threshold Cherenkov detector, a time-of-flight wall and an electromagnetic calorimeter. The large angle system uses a solenoidal magnet, while the forward spectrometer is based on a dipole magnet. Redundancy in particle identification has been sought, to enable the cross-calibration of efficiencies and to obtain a few percent overall accuracy in the cross-section measurements. Detector construction, operation and initial physics performances are reported. In addition, the full chain for data recording and analysis, from trigger to the software framework, is described. Abstract

The OPERA experiment was designed to discover the v τ appearance in a v μ beam, due to neutrino oscillations. The detector, located in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory, consisted of a nuclear photographic emulsion/lead target with a mass of about 1.25 kt, complemented by electronic detectors. It was exposed from 2008 to 2012 to the CNGS beam: an almost pure v μ beam with a baseline of 730 km, collecting a total of 1.8·10 20 protons on target. The OPERA Collaboration eventually assessed the discovery of v μ →v τ oscillations with a statistical significance of 6.1 σ by observing ten v τ CC interaction candidates. These events have been published on the Open Data Portal at CERN. This paper provides a detailed description of the v τ data sample to make it usable by the whole community., (© 2021. Abstract

The OPERA experiment was designed to study ν&#95;{μ}→ν&#95;{τ} oscillations in the appearance mode in the CERN to Gran Sasso Neutrino beam (CNGS). In this Letter, we report the final analysis of the full data sample collected between 2008 and 2012, corresponding to 17.97×10^{19} protons on target. Selection criteria looser than in previous analyses have produced ten ν&#95;{τ} candidate events, thus reducing the statistical uncertainty in the measurement of the oscillation parameters and of ν&#95;{τ} properties. A multivariate approach for event identification has been applied to the candidate events and the discovery of ν&#95;{τ} appearance is confirmed with an improved significance level of 6.1σ. |Δm&#95;{32}^{2}| has been measured, in appearance mode, with an accuracy of 20%. The measurement of the ν&#95;{τ} charged-current cross section, for the first time with a negligible contamination from ν[over ¯]&#95;{τ}, and the first direct evidence for the ν&#95;{τ} lepton number are also reported.

Abstract

The OPERA experiment was designed to search for ν&#95;{μ}→ν&#95;{τ} oscillations in appearance mode, i.e., by detecting the τ leptons produced in charged current ν&#95;{τ} interactions. The experiment took data from 2008 to 2012 in the CERN Neutrinos to Gran Sasso beam. The observation of the ν&#95;{μ}→ν&#95;{τ} appearance, achieved with four candidate events in a subsample of the data, was previously reported. In this Letter, a fifth ν&#95;{τ} candidate event, found in an enlarged data sample, is described. Together with a further reduction of the expected background, the candidate events detected so far allow us to assess the discovery of ν&#95;{μ}→ν&#95;{τ} oscillations in appearance mode with a significance larger than 5σ.
