By using high-resolution spectra acquired with FLAMES-GIRAFFE at the ESO/VLT, we measured radial and rotational velocities of 115 stars in the Galactic globular cluster M55. After field decontamination based on the radial velocity values, the final sample of member stars is composed of 32 blue straggler stars (BSSs) and 76 reference stars populating the red giant and horizontal branches of the cluster. In agreement with previous findings, the totality of red giant branch stars has negligible rotation ($<$ 10 km s$^{-1}$), and horizontal branch stars have rotational velocities of 40 km s$^{-1}$ at most. In contrast, the BSS rotational velocity distribution shows a long tail extending up to $\sim$ 200 km s$^{-1}$, with 15 BSSs (out of 32) spinning faster than 40 km s$^{-1}$. By defining the threshold for fast rotating BSSs at 40 km s$^{-1}$, this sets the percentage of these stars at 47 $\pm$ 14 %. Such a large value has never been found before in any globular clusters. It is roughly comparable to that measured in other loose systems ($\omega$ Centauri, M4, and NGC 3201) and significantly larger than that observed in high-density clusters (as 47 Tucanae, NGC 6397, NGC 6752, and M30). This evidence supports a scenario where recent BSS formation is occurring in low-density environments. We also find that the BSS rotational velocity tends to decrease for decreasing luminosity, as found for another loose cluster of the sample (namely, NGC 3201)., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

The first generation of ELT instruments includes an optical-infrared high-resolution spectrograph, indicated as ELT-HIRES and recently christened ANDES (ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph). ANDES consists of three fibre-fed spectrographs ([U]BV, RIZ, YJH) providing a spectral resolution of $\sim$100,000 with a minimum simultaneous wavelength coverage of 0.4-1.8 $\mu$m with the goal of extending it to 0.35-2.4 $\mu$m with the addition of a U arm to the BV spectrograph and a separate K band spectrograph. It operates both in seeing- and diffraction-limited conditions and the fibre feeding allows several, interchangeable observing modes including a single conjugated adaptive optics module and a small diffraction-limited integral field unit in the NIR. Modularity and fibre-feeding allow ANDES to be placed partly on the ELT Nasmyth platform and partly in the Coud\'e room. ANDES has a wide range of groundbreaking science cases spanning nearly all areas of research in astrophysics and even fundamental physics. Among the top science cases, there are the detection of biosignatures from exoplanet atmospheres, finding the fingerprints of the first generation of stars, tests on the stability of Nature's fundamental couplings, and the direct detection of the cosmic acceleration. The Li-rich stars are a class of rare objects with A(Li) higher than that of other stars in the same evolutionary stage. Their origin is still debated and valuable routes are the Cameron-Fowler mechanism, mass transfer process in a binary system or engulfment of small bodies. Metal-poor ([Fe/H]<-1 dex) stars are only a small fraction of the entire population of Li-rich stars. We observed with MIKE at the Magellan Telescope the metal-poor ([Fe/H]=-3.95+-0.11 dex) giant star HE0057-5959, deriving A(Li)=+2.09+-0.07 dex. Such A(Li) is higher by about 1 dex than that of other stars in the same evolutionary stage. A previous analysis of the same target suggested that its high A(Li) reflects a still ongoing First Dredge-Up process. We revise the nature of HE0057-5959 by comparing its stellar parameters and A(Li) with appropriate stellar evolution models. This comparison rules out that HE0057-5959 is caught during its First Dredge-Up, being this latter already ended according to the parameters of this star. Its A(Li), remarkably higher than the typical lithium plateau drawn by similar giant stars, demonstrates that HE0057-5959 joins the class of the rare metal-poor Li-rich stars. HE0057-5959 is the most metal-poor Li-rich star discovered so far. We consider different scenarios to explain this star. No internal mixing able to activate the Cameron-Fowler mechanism is known for metal-poor stars at this evolutionary stage. Also the engulfment of planets is disfavored because such metal-poor stars should not host planets. Finally, HE0057-5959 is one of the most Na-rich among the Li-rich stars and we found that a strong excess of Na is common to the three Li-rich stars with [Fe/H]<-3 dex. This finding could support the scenario of mass transfer from a massive companion star in a binary system, even if we found no evidence of radial velocity variations., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Context. The recent detection of nitrogen-enhanced, metal-poor galaxies at high redshift by the James Webb Space Telescope has sparked renewed interest in exploring the chemical evolution of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen (the CNO elements) at early times, prompting fresh inquiries into their origins. Aims. The main goal of this paper is to shed light onto the early evolution of the main CNO isotopes in our Galaxy and in young distant systems, such as GN-z11 at z=10.6. Methods. To this aim, we incorporate a stochastic star-formation component into a chemical evolution model calibrated with high-quality Milky Way (MW) data, focusing on the contribution of Population III (Pop III) stars to the early chemical enrichment. Results. By comparing the model predictions with CNO abundance measurements from high-resolution spectroscopy of an homogeneous sample of Galactic halo stars, we first demonstrate that the scatter observed in the metallicity range -4.5 < [Fe/H] <-1.5 can be explained by pre-enrichment from Pop III stars that explode as supernovae (SNe) with different initial masses and energies. Then, by exploiting the chemical evolution model, we provide testable predictions for log(C/N), log(N/O), and log(C/O) vs. log(O/H)+12 in MW-like galaxies observed at different cosmic epochs/redshifts. Finally, by calibrating the chemical evolution model to replicate the observed properties of GN-z11, we provide an alternative interpretation of its log(N/O) abundance ratio, demonstrating that its high N content can be reproduced through enrichment from high-mass faint Pop III SNe. Conclusions. Stochastic chemical enrichment from primordial stars explains both the observed scatter in CNO abundances in MW halo stars and the exceptionally high N/O ratios in some distant galaxies. These findings emphasize the critical role of Pop III stars in shaping early chemical evolution.

We used near-infrared spectroscopy at medium-high resolution (R=8,000$-$25,000) to perform the first comprehensive chemical study of the intermediate luminosity bulge globular cluster Terzan~6. We derived detailed abundances and abundance patterns of 27 giant stars, likely members of Terzan~6, based on their accurate Hubble Space Telescope proper motions and line-of-sight radial velocities. From the spectral analysis of these stars, we determined an average heliocentric radial velocity of 143.3$\pm$1.0 km s$^{-1}$ with a velocity dispersion of 5.1$\pm$0.7 km s$^{-1}$ and an average [Fe/H]=$-0.65\pm0.01$ and a low 1$\sigma$ dispersion of 0.03 dex. We also measured some depletion of [Mn/Fe] with respect to the solar-scaled values and enhancement of for [Ca/Fe], [Si/Fe], [Mg/Fe], [Ti/Fe], [O/Fe], [Al/Fe], [Na/Fe], and, to a lower extent, for [K/Fe], consistent with previous measurements of other bulge globular clusters and favoring the scenario of a rapid bulge formation and chemical enrichment. Some spread in the light element abundances suggest the presence of first- and second-generation stars, typical of genuine globulars. Finally, we measured some depletion of carbon and low $\rm ^{12}C/^{13}C$ isotopic ratios, as in previous studies of field and cluster bulge giants, indicating that extra-mixing mechanisms should be at work during the post main sequence evolution in the high metallicity regime as well., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We present the first comprehensive chemical study of a representative sample of 27 luminous red giant branch (RGB) stars belonging to Liller 1, a complex stellar system in the Galactic bulge. This study is based on medium-resolution near-infrared spectra acquired with X-shooter at the Very Large Telescope. We found a subpopulation counting 22 stars with subsolar metallicity ($<$[Fe/H]$>=-0.31\pm0.02$ and 1$\sigma$ dispersion of 0.08 dex) and with enhanced [$\alpha$/Fe], [Al/Fe], and [K/Fe] that likely formed early and quickly from gas that was mainly enriched by type II supernovae, and a metal-rich population counting 5 stars with supersolar metallicity ($<$[Fe/H]$>$=+0.22$\pm$0.03 and 1$\sigma$ dispersion of 0.06 dex) and roughly solar-scaled [$\alpha$/Fe], [Al/Fe], and [K/Fe] that formed at later epochs from gas that was also enriched by type Ia supernovae. Moreover, both subpopulations show enhanced [Na/Fe], as in the bulge field, about solar-scaled [V/Fe], and depletion of [C/Fe] and $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C with respect to the solar values. This indicates that mixing and extra-mixing processes during the RGB evolution also occur at very high metallicities. Notably, no evidence of a Na-O anticorrelation, which is considered the fingerprint of genuine globular clusters, has been found. This challenges any formation scenarios that invoke the accretion of a molecular cloud or an additional stellar system onto a genuine globular cluster. The results of this study underline the strong chemical similarity between Liller 1 and Terzan 5 and support the hypothesis that these complex stellar systems might be fossil fragments of the epoch of Galactic bulge formation., Comment: Accepted for pubblication in A&A

The MINCE (Measuring at Intermediate metallicity Neutron-Capture Elements) project aims to gather the abundances of neutron-capture elements but also of light elements and iron peak elements in a large sample of giant stars in this metallicity range. T The aim of this work is to study the chemical evolution of galactic sub-components recently identified (i.e. Gaia Sausage Enceladus (GSE), Sequoia). We used high signal-to-noise ratios, high-resolution spectra and standard 1D LTE spectrum synthesis to determine the detailed abundances. We could determine the abundances for up to 10 neutron-capture elements (Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm and Eu) in 33 stars. The general trends of abundance ratios [n-capture element/Fe] versus [Fe/H] are in agreement with the results found in the literature. When our sample is divided in sub-groups depending on their kinematics, we found that the run of [Sr/Ba] vs [Ba/H] for the stars belonging to the GSE accretion event shows a tight anti-correlation. The results for the Sequoia stars, although based on a very limited sample, shows a [Sr/Ba] systematically higher than the [Sr/Ba] found in the GSE stars at a given [Ba/H] hinting at a different nucleosynthetic history. Stochastic chemical evolution models have been computed to understand the evolution of the GSE chemical composition of Sr and Ba. The first conclusions are that the GSE chemical evolution is similar to the evolution of a dwarf galaxy with galactic winds and inefficient star formation. Detailed abundances of neutron-capture elements have been measured in high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra of intermediate metal-poor stars, the metallicity range covered by the MINCE project. The Gaia satellite has provided the community with three releases containing astrometrical and photometric data as well as by products, such as stellar parameters and variability indicators. By selecting in the Gaia database, one can select stars with the requested characteristics, such as high speed. At present any selection is based on available Gaia releases including a subset of the observations. This, for some stars, can show some limitations, for example there is still not a sufficient number of observations to detect binarity. We investigated a star selected in Gaia EDR3 for its high speed that appears unbound to the Galaxy. We requested high-quality spectra to derive more information on the star. {From the spectroscopic investigation we confirm the low metallicity content of the star, and we derive a detailed chemical composition. The star is poor in carbon and very rich in oxygen: [(C+N+O)/Fe]=+0.65. From the two spectra observed we conclude that the star is in a binary system and from the investigation of the ionisation balance we derive that the star is closer than implied by the Gaia DR3 parallax, and thus has a a lower intrinsic luminosity. The star is probably still unbound, but there is the possibility that it is bound to the Galaxy. Its low carbon abundance suggests that the star was formed in a dwarf galaxy., Comment: A&A Volume 684, April 2024

We present a high angular resolution multi-wavelength study of the massive globular cluster NGC 1835 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Thanks to a combination of optical and near ultraviolet images acquired with the WFC3 on board the HST, we performed a detailed inspection of the stellar population in this stellar system adopting a ``UV-guided search'' to optimize the detection of relatively hot stars. This allowed us to discover a remarkably extended horizontal branch (HB), spanning more than 4.5 magnitudes in both magnitude and colour from the region redder than the instability strip, up to effective temperatures of 30,000 K, and including a large population of RR Lyrae (67 confirmed variables, and 52 new candidates). This is the first time that such a feature has been detected in an extra-Galactic cluster, demonstrating that the physical conditions responsible for the formation of extended HBs are ubiquitous. The acquired dataset has been also used to redetermine the cluster distance modulus, reddening, and absolute age, yielding $(m-M)_0=18.58$, $E(B-V)=0.08$, and $t=12.5$ Gyr, respectively., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

The Gaia satellite has already provided the astronomical community with three data releases, and the Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS) on board Gaia has provided the radial velocity for 33 million stars. When deriving the radial velocity from the RVS spectra, several stars are measured to have large values. To verify the credibility of these measurements, we selected some bright stars with the modulus of radial velocity in excess of 500\ to be observed with SOPHIE at OHP and UVES at VLT. This paper is devoted to investigating the chemical composition of the stars observed with UVES. We derived atmospheric parameters using Gaia photometry and parallaxes, and we performed a chemical analysis using the code. We find that the sample consists of metal-poor stars, although none have extremely low metallicities. The abundance patterns match what has been found in other samples of metal-poor stars selected irrespective of their radial velocities. We highlight the presence of three stars with low Cu and Zn abundances that are likely descendants of pair-instability supernovae. Two stars are apparently younger than 1\,Ga, and their masses exceed twice the turn-off mass of metal-poor populations. This makes it unlikely that they are blue stragglers because it would imply they formed from triple or multiple systems. We suggest instead that they are young metal-poor stars accreted from a dwarf galaxy. Finally, we find that the star RVS721 is associated with the Gjoll stream, which itself is associated with the Globular Cluster NGC\,3201., Comment: Astronomy and Astrophysics - A\&A, In press

The data from the Gaia satellite led us to revise our conception of the Galaxy structure and history. Hitherto unknown components have been discovered and a deep re-thinking of what the Galactic halo is is in progress. We selected from the Gaia catalogue stars with extreme transverse velocities with respect to the Sun ($|V_T| > 500 $ and observed them with FORS2 at the ESO VLT, to classify them using both their chemical and dynamical properties. Two apparently young stars, identified in paper\,I, were observed with UVES. We derived abundances for Na, Mg, Ca, Ti, Mn, and Fe, analysing the spectra with while for Ba we used line profile fitting. We computed actions from parallaxes and kinematical data. The stars span the metallicity range $ Fe/H -0.5$ with $ Fe/H = -1.6$. Star GHS143 has a total speed of about 1440 which is almost three times faster than the local escape velocity of 522 strongly implying this star is unbound to the Galaxy. Remarkably, this star is not escaping from the Galaxy, but it is falling into it. Ten stars are apparently young with masses in excess of 1.3M. Their interpretation as evolved blue stragglers is doubtful. The existence of a young metal-poor population is possible. The two stars observed with UVES show no lithium, suggesting they are blue stragglers. We detected a metal-poor population, confined to the bulge, that we call SpiteF, and argue that it is the result of a recent accretion event. We detect 102 candidates of the Aurora population that should have formed prior to the formation of the disc. Our sample is non-homogeneous and mainly retrograde. The stars are metal poor, and 23 have Fe/H -2.0$. Our selection is efficient at finding very metal-poor stars, but it selects peculiar populations., Comment: Astronomy and Astrophysics - In press

Relics of ancient accretion events experienced by the Milky Way are predominantly located within the stellar halo of our Galaxy. However, debris from different objects display overlapping distributions in dynamical spaces, making it extremely challenging to properly disentangle their contribution to the build-up of the Galaxy. To shed light on this chaotic context, we started a program aimed at the homogeneous chemical tagging of the local halo of the Milky Way, focusing on the component in retrograde motion, since this is expected to host a large fraction of stars accreted from past mergers. The A Walk on the Retrograde Side (WRS) project targets retrograde halo stars in the Solar Neighborhood having accurate $6$-D phase space information available, measuring the precise chemical abundance of several chemical elements from high-resolution spectroscopy. In this first paper, we present the project and the analysis of high-resolution spectra obtained with UVES at VLT and PEPSI at LBT for $186$ stars. Accurate radial velocity and chemical abundance of several elements have been obtained for all the target stars. In particular we focus on the chemical composition of a specific subset of substructures identified dynamically in the literature. Our study reveals that two among the more recently discovered structures in the retrograde halo, namely Antaeus / L-RL$64$ and ED-$3$, have identical chemical patterns and similar integrals of motion, suggesting a common origin. In turn, the abundance patterns of this unified system differ from that of Gaia-Enceladus, confirming that it is an independent structure. Finally, Sequoia exhibits a different chemistry with respect to that of Gaia-Enceladus at $\mathrm{[Fe/H]} < -1.5$ dex, showcasing an excess of stars with lower Mg and Ca in the common metallicity range., Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We use photometric metallicity estimates for about 700000 stars in the surroundings of the Sun, with very accurate distances and 3-D motions measures from Gaia DR3, to explore the properties of the metal-poor (-2.0<[Fe/H]<= -1.5; MP) and very metal-poor ([Fe/H]<= -2.0; VMP) stars with disc kinematics in the sample. We confirm the presence of a significant fraction of MP and VMP stars with disc-like orbits and that prograde orbits are prevalent among them, with prograde to retrograde ratio P/R ~3. We highlight for the first time a statistically significant difference in the distribution of the Z-component of the angular momentum (L_Z) and orbital eccentricity between prograde and retrograde disc-like MP stars. The same kind of difference is found also in the VMP subsample, albeit at a much lower level of statistical significance, likely due to the small sample size. We show that prograde disc-like MP and VMP stars display an additional component of the |L_Z| distribution with respect to their retrograde counterpart. This component is at higher |L_Z| with respect to the main peak of the distribution, possibly hinting at the presence of a pristine prograde disc in the Milky Way. This hypothesis is supported by the results of the analysis of a large sub-sample dominated by stars born in-situ. Also in this case the prevalence of prograde stars is clearly detected at [Fe/H]<= -1.5 and their |L_Z| distribution is more skewed toward high |L_Z| values than their retrograde counterpart. This suggests that the seed of what will eventually evolve into the main disc components of the Milky Way may have been already in place in the earliest phases of the Galaxy assembly., Comment: Accepted by A&A. This is the fourth paper of our new release of the BaSTI (a Bag of Stellar Tracks and Isochrones) stellar model and isochrone library. Following the updated solar-scaled, alpha-enhanced, and white dwarf model libraries, we present here alpha-depleted ([alpha/Fe] = -0.2) evolutionary tracks and isochrones, suitable to study the alpha-depleted stars discovered in Local Group dwarf galaxies and in the Milky Way. These calculations include all improvements and updates of the solar-scaled and alpha-enhanced models, and span a mass range between 0.1 and 15 Msun, 21 metallicities between [Fe/H] = -3.20 and +0.45 with a helium-to-metal enrichment ratio dY/dZ = 1.31, homogeneous with the solar-scaled and alpha-enhanced models. The isochrones -- available in several photometric filters -- cover an age range between 20 Myr and 14.5 Gyr, including the pre-main-sequence phase. We have compared our isochrones with independent calculations of alpha-depleted stellar models, available for the same alpha-element depletion adopted in present investigation. We have also discussed the effect of an alpha-depleted heavy element distribution on the bolometric corrections in different wavelength regimes. Anomalous Cepheids (ACEPs) are intermediate mass metal-poor pulsators mostly discovered in dwarf galaxies of the Local Group. However, recent Galactic surveys, including the Gaia DR3, found a few hundreds of ACEPs in the Milky Way. Their origin is not well understood. We aim to investigate the origin and evolution of Galactic ACEPs by studying for the first time the chemical composition of their atmospheres. We used UVES@VLT to obtain high-resolution spectra for a sample of 9 ACEPs belonging to the Galactic halo. We derived the abundances of 12 elements, including C, Na, Mg, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, Y, and Ba. We complemented these data with literature abundances for an additional three ACEPs that were previously incorrectly classified as type II Cepheids, thus increasing the sample to a total of 12 stars. All the investigated ACEPs have an iron abundance [Fe/H]$<-1.5$ dex as expected from theoretical predictions for these pulsators. The abundance ratios of the different elements to iron show that the ACEP's chemical composition is generally consistent with that of the Galactic halo field stars, except the Sodium, which is found overabundant in 9 out of the 11 ACEPs where it was measured, in close similarity with second-generation stars in the Galactic Globular Clusters. The same comparison with dwarf and ultra-faint satellites of the Milky Way reveals more differences than similarities so it is unlikely that the bulk of Galactic ACEPs originated in such a kind of galaxies which subsequently dissolved in the Galactic halo. The principal finding of this work is the unexpected overabundance of Sodium in ACEPs. We explored several hypotheses to explain this feature, finding that the most promising scenario is the evolution of low-mass stars in a binary system with either mass transfer or merging. High-resolution Hubble Space Telescope (\textit{HST}) optical observations have been used to perform the deepest photometric study of the poorly studied Galactic globular cluster NGC 6284. The deep colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) that we obtained reaches 6 magnitudes below the main sequence turn-off. We provide the first determination of the gravitational centre ($C_{\rm grav}$) and density profile of the system from resolved stars. $C_{\rm grav}$ is significantly offset (by $1.5-3''$) from the values in the literature. The density profile shows the presence of a steep central cusp, unambiguously indicating that the cluster experienced the core-collapse phase. Updated values of the structural parameters and relaxation times of the system are provided. We also constructed the first high-resolution reddening map in the cluster direction, which allowed us to correct the evolutionary sequences in the CMD for the effects of differential reddening. Isochrone fitting to the corrected CMD provided us with new estimates of the cluster age, average colour excess, metallicity, and distance. We find an absolute age of $13.3 \pm 0.4$ Gyr, an average colour excess $E(B-V) = 0.32 \pm 0.01$, a metallicity [Fe/H]$= -1.36 \pm 0.01$, and a true distance modulus $(m-M)_0 = 15.61 \pm 0.04$ that sets the cluster distance at $13.2 \pm 0.2$ kpc from the Sun. The superb quality of the CMD allowed a clear-cut identification of the Red Giant Branch (RGB) bump, which is clearly distinguishable along the narrow RGB. We used ultra-deep observations obtained with the NIRCam aboard the James Webb Space Telescope to explore the stellar population of NGC 6440: a typical massive, obscured and contaminated globular cluster formed and orbiting within the Galactic bulge. Leveraging the exceptional capabilities of this camera, we sampled the cluster down to ~5 magnitudes below the main-sequence turn-off in the (mF115W , mF115W - mF200W ) colour-magnitude diagram. After carefully accounting for differential extinction and contamination by field interlopers, we find that the main sequence splits into two branches both above and below the characteristic knee. By comparing the morphology of the colour-magnitude diagram with a suitable set of isochrones, we argue that the upper main-sequence bi-modality is likely due to the presence of a He-enriched stellar population with a helium spread of DeltaY = 0.04. The lower main-sequence bi-modality can be attributed to variations in the abundance of water (i.e., oxygen) with Delta[O/Fe] ~ -0.4. This is the first evidence of both helium and oxygen abundance variations in a globular cluster purely based on JWST observations. These results open the window for future in-depth investigations of the multiple population phenomenon in clusters located in the Galactic bulge, which were previously unfeasible with near-UV observations, due to prohibitive reddening and crowding conditions., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

In this study, we report the results of Fe, Mg, Al, and Si abundances analysis for a sample of 439 stars in Omega Centauri, using high-resolution spectra obtained with the VLT/FLAMES multi-object spectrograph. Our analysis reveals the presence of four distinct Fe populations, with the main peak occurring at low metallicity, consistent with previous literature findings. We observe a discrete and pronounced Mg-Al anti-correlation, which exhibits variations in shape and extension as a function of metallicity. Specifically, this anti-correlation is present in stars with metallicities lower than approximately -1.3 dex, while it becomes less evident or absent for higher [Fe/H] values. Additionally, we detect (anti-) correlations between Mg and Si, and between Al and Si, whose extensions also vary with metallicity, similar to the Mg-Al anti-correlation. These results suggest that the MgAl cycle plays a crucial role in the formation of multiple populations in Omega Centauri, with the presence of all (anti-) correlations at metallicities lower than -1.3 dex providing evidence for the burning of Mg at very high temperatures (> 10^8 K), at least in the metal-poor regime. Furthermore, we observe a clear trend of stars with [Al/Fe] > +0.5 dex as a function of metallicity, confirming for the first time the existence of the two channels of Al production and destruction. This evidence can help to provide further constraints on the potential nature of the polluters responsible for the observed chemical anomalies in this stellar system. Finally, we find that the two most metal-poor populations identified in our sample are compatible with null or very small metallicity dispersion and we discuss how this result fit into a scenario where Omega Centauri is the remnant of a disrupted nucleated dwarf galaxy., Comment: Accepted for pubblication in A&A

We used high resolution spectra acquired at the Magellan Telescope to measure radial and rotational velocities of approximately 200 stars in the Galactic globular cluster NGC 3201. The surveyed sample includes Blue Stragglers Stars (BSSs) and reference stars in different evolutionary stages (main sequence turn-off, sub-giant, red giant and asymptotic giant branches). The average radial velocity value ($\langle V_r\rangle = 494.5 \pm 0.5$ km s$^{-1}$) confirms a large systemic velocity for this cluster and was used to distinguish 33 residual field interlopers. The final sample of member stars counts 67 BSSs and 114 reference stars. Similarly to what is found in other clusters, the totality of the reference stars has negligible rotation ($<20$ km s$^{-1}$), while the BSS rotational velocity distribution shows a long tail extending up to $\sim 200$ km s$^{-1}$, with 19 BSSs (out of 67) spinning faster than 40 km s$^{-1}$. This sets the percentage of fast rotating BSSs to $\sim 28\%$. Such a percentage is roughly comparable to that measured in other loose systems ($\omega$ Centauri, M4 and M55) and significantly larger than that measured in high-density clusters (as 47 Tucanae, NGC 6397, NGC 6752 and M30). This evidence supports a scenario where recent BSS formation (mainly from the evolution of binary systems) is occurring in low-density environments. We also find that the BSS rotational velocity tends to decrease for decreasing luminosity and surface temperature, similarly to what is observed in main sequence stars. NGC 2419 is likely the globular cluster (GC) with the lowest dynamical age in the Galaxy. This makes it an extremely interesting target for studying the properties of its multiple populations (MPs), as they have been likely affected only modestly by long-term dynamical evolution effects. Here we present for the first time a detailed analysis of the structural and morphological properties of the MPs along the whole extension of this remote and massive GC by combining high-resolution HST and wide-field ground-based data. In agreement with formation models predicting that second population (SP) stars form in the inner regions of the first population (FP) system, we find that the SP is more centrally concentrated than the FP. This may provide constraints on the relative concentrations of MPs in the cluster early stages of the evolutionary phase driven by two-body relaxation. In addition, we find that the fraction of FP stars is larger than expected from the general trend drawn by Galactic GCs. If, as suggested by a number of studies, NGC 2419 formed in the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy and was later accreted by the Milky Way, we show that the observed FP fraction may be explained as due to the transition of NGC 2419 to a weaker tidal field (its current Galactocentric distance is d_gc~95 kpc) and consequently to a reduced loss rate of FP stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) is the host of a rich system of globular clusters (GCs) that span a wide age range. The chemical composition of the SMC clusters is still poorly understood, despite their significance to chemical evolution studies. Here, we provide the first detailed chemical study of evolved giants in three distinct clusters, NGC 121 (10.5 Gyr), NGC 339 (6 Gyr), and NGC 419 (1.4 Gyr). Results are based on high-resolution spectra obtained with FLAMES at the Very Large Telescope. The chemical fingerprints of these clusters closely resemble those of SMC field stars, supporting the SMC's specific history of chemical enrichment relative to the Milky Way. The approximately solar-scaled [alpha/Fe] observed in all three clusters, independent of their [Fe/H], demonstrate the SMC's low star formation efficiency. Compared to their Milky Way counterparts, elements primarily produced by massive stars are severely underrepresented. Particularly, the young cluster NGC 419's extremely low [Zn/Fe] shows that hypernovae have contributed relatively little during the past two Gyr. The three GCs have high [Eu/Fe] values regardless of their age. This suggests that the production of the r-process elements in the SMC was extremely efficient up to 1.5 Gyr ago, with an enrichment timescale comparable to that from Type Ia supernovae. When the properties of the oldest SMC object NGC 121 are compared to those of in-situ Milky Way clusters and accreted clusters linked to the Gaia-Enceladus merger event, it is shown that the SMC had already attained the same metallicity as Gaia-Enceladus but with lower [Fe/H] ratios at the age of NGC 121. This suggests that the chemical enrichment histories of the early SMC and Gaia-Enceladus differed, and that the SMC probably had a lower mass in its early ages than Gaia-Enceladus., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, 9 tables. In the context of a project aimed at characterizing the dynamical evolution of old globular clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud, we have secured deep HST/WFC3 images of the massive cluster NGC 1835. In the field of view of the acquired images, at a projected angular separation of approximately 2 arcmin from the cluster, we detected the small stellar system KMK88-10. The observations provided the deepest color-magnitude diagram ever obtained for this cluster, revealing that it hosts a young stellar population with an age of 600-1000 Myr. The cluster surface brightness profile is nicely reproduced by a King model with a core radius rc = 4 arcsec (0.97 pc), an half-mass radius rhm = 12 arcsec (2.9 pc), and a concentration parameter c~1.3 corresponding to a truncation radius rt~81 arcsec (19.5 pc). We also derived its integrated absolute magnitude (MV=-0.71) and total mass (M~80-160 Msun). The most intriguing feature emerging from this analysis is that KMK88-10 presents a structure elongated in the direction of NGC 1835, with an intracluster over-density that suggests the presence of a tidal bridge between the two systems. Terzan 5 is a heavily obscured stellar system located in the inner Galaxy. It has been postulated to be a stellar relic, a Bulge Fossil Fragment witnessing the complex history of the assembly of the Milky Way bulge. In this paper, we follow the chemical enrichment of a set of putative progenitors of Terzan 5 to assess whether the chemical properties of this cluster fit within a formation scenario in which it is the remnant of a primordial building block of the bulge. We can explain the metallicity distribution function and the runs of different element-to-iron abundance ratios as functions of [Fe/H] derived from optical-infrared spectroscopy of giant stars in Terzan 5, by assuming that the cluster experienced two major star formation bursts separated by a long quiescent phase. We further predict that the most metal-rich stars in Terzan 5 are moderately He-enhanced and a large spread of He abundances in the cluster, Y = 0.26-0.335. We conclude that current observations fit within a formation scenario in which Terzan 5 originated from a pristine, or slightly metal-enriched, gas clump about one order of magnitude more massive than its present-day mass. Losses of gas and stars played a major role in shaping Terzan 5 the way we see it now. The iron content of the youngest stellar population is better explained if the white dwarfs that give rise to type Ia supernovae (the main Fe factories) sink towards the cluster center, rather than being stripped by the strong tidal forces exerted by the Milky Way in the outer regions., Comment: 14 pages, 2 tables, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Blue stragglers are anomalously luminous core hydrogen-burning stars formed through mass-transfer in binary/triple systems and stellar collisions. Their physical and evolutionary properties are largely unknown and unconstrained. Here we analyze 320 high-resolution spectra of blue stragglers collected in eight galactic globular clusters with different structural characteristics and show evidence that the fraction of fast rotating blue stragglers (with rotational velocities larger than 40 km/s) increases for decreasing central density of the host system. This trend suggests that fast spinning blue stragglers prefer low-density environments and promises to open an unexplored route towards understanding the evolutionary processes of these stars. Since large rotation rates are expected in the early stages of both formation channels, our results provide direct evidence for recent blue straggler formation activity in low-density environments and put strong constraints on the timescale of the collisional blue straggler slow-down processes., Comment: Published in Nature Communications

In the context of a project aimed at characterizing the properties of the so-called Bulge Fossil Fragments (the fossil remnants of the bulge formation epoch), here we present the first determination of the metallicity distribution of Liller 1. For a sample of 64 individual member stars we used ESO- MUSE spectra to measure the equivalent width of the CaII triplet and then derive the iron abundance. To test the validity of the adopted calibration in the metal-rich regime, the procedure was first applied to three reference bulge globular clusters (NGC 6569, NGC 6440, and NGC 6528). In all the three cases, we found single-component iron distributions, with abundance values fully in agreement with those reported in the literature. The application of the same methodology to Liller 1 yielded, instead, a clear bimodal iron distribution, with a sub-solar component at $\text{[Fe/H]}= -0.48\,$dex ($\sigma = 0.22$) and a super-solar component at $\text{[Fe/H]}= +0.26\,$dex ($\sigma = 0.17$). The latter is found to be significantly more centrally concentrated than the metal-poor population, as expected in a self-enrichment scenario and in agreement with what found in another bulge system, Terzan 5. The obtained metallicity distribution is astonishingly similar to that predicted by the reconstructed star formation history of Liller 1, which is characterized by three main bursts and a low, but constant, activity of star formation over the entire lifetime. We use the calibrations by Calamida et al. and by Hilker et al., and the standardised synthetic photometry in the v, b, and y Stromgren passbands from Gaia DR3 BP/RP spectra, to obtain photometric metallicities for a selected sample of 694233 old Galactic giant stars having |b|>20.0 and parallax uncertainties lower than 10%. The zero point of both sets of photometric metallicities has been shifted to to ensure optimal match with the spectroscopic [Fe/H] values for 44785 stars in common with APOGEE DR17, focusing on the metallicity range where they provide the highest accuracy. The metallicities derived in this way from the Calamida et al. calibration display a typical accuracy of ~0.1 dex and 1 sigma precision ~0.2 dex in the range -2.2 <=[Fe/H]<= -0.4, while they show a systematic trend with [Fe/H] at higher metallicity, beyond the applicability range of the relation. Those derived from the Hilker et al. calibration display, in general, worse precision, and lower accuracy in the metal-poor regime, but have a median accuracy < 0.05 dex for [Fe/H]>= -0.8. These results are confirmed and, consequently, the metallicities validated, by comparison with large sets of spectroscopic metallicities from various surveys. The newly obtained metallicities are used to derive metallicity distributions for several previously identified sub-structures in the Galactic halo with an unprecedented number of stars. In the context of a project aimed at characterizing the properties of star clusters in the Galactic bulge, here we present the determination of the internal kinematics and structure of the massive globular cluster NGC 6569. The kinematics has been studied by means of an unprecedented spectroscopic dataset acquired in the context of the ESO-VLT Multi-Instrument Kinematic Survey (MIKiS) of Galactic globular clusters, combining the observations from four different spectrographs. We measured the line-of-sight velocity of a sample of almost 1300 stars distributed between ~0.8" and 770" from the cluster center. From a sub-sample of high-quality measures, we determined the velocity dispersion profile of the system over its entire radial extension (from ~ 5" to ~ 200" from the center), finding the characteristic behavior usually observed in globular clusters, with a constant inner plateau and a declining trend at larger radii. The projected density profile of the cluster has been obtained from resolved star counts, by combining high-resolution photometric data in the center, and the Gaia EDR3 catalog radially extended out to ~20' for a proper sampling of the Galactic field background. The two profiles are properly reproduced by the same King model, from which we estimated updated values of the central velocity dispersion, main structural parameters (such as the King concentration, the core, half-mass, and tidal radii), total mass, and relaxation times. Our analysis also reveals a hint of ordered rotation in an intermediate region of the cluster (40"

We present the chemical composition of 206 red giant branch stars members of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) using optical, high-resolution spectra collected with the multi-object spectrograph FLAMES-GIRAFFE at the ESO Very Large Telescope. This sample includes stars in three fields located in different positions within the parent galaxy. We analysed the main groups of elements, namely light- (Na), alpha- (O, Mg, Si, Ca, Ti), iron-peak (Sc, V, Fe, Ni, Cu) and s-process elements (Zr, Ba, La). The metallicity distribution of the sample displays a main peak around [Fe/H] ~ -1 dex and a weak metal-poor tail. However, the three fields display [Fe/H] distributions different with each other, in particular a difference of 0.2 dex is found between the mean metallicities of the two most internal fields.The fraction of metal-poor stars increases significantly (from ~1 to ~20%) from the innermost fields to the most external one, likely reflecting an age gradient in the SMC. Also, we found a hint of possible chemically/kinematic distinct substructures. The SMC stars have abundance ratios clearly distinct with respect to the Milky Way stars, in particular for the elements produced by massive stars (like Na, $\alpha$ and most iron-peak elements) that have abundance ratios systematically lower than those measured in our Galaxy. This points out that the massive stars contributed less to the chemical enrichment of the SMC with respect to the Milky Way, according to the low star formation rate expected for this galaxy. Finally, we identified small systematic differences in the abundances of some elements (Na, Ti, V and Zr) in the two innermost fields, suggesting that the chemical enrichment history in the SMC has been not uniform., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables. In the context of the ESO-VLT Multi-Instrument Kinematic Survey (MIKiS) of Galactic globular clusters, here we present the line-of-sight velocity dispersion profile of NGC 6440, a massive globular cluster located in the Galactic bulge. By combining the data acquired with four different spectrographs, we obtained the radial velocity of a sample of $\sim 1800$ individual stars distributed over the entire cluster extension, from $\sim$0.1$"$ to 778$"$ from the center. Using a properly selected sample of member stars with the most reliable radial velocity measures, we derived the velocity dispersion profile up to 250$"$ from the center. The profile is well described by the same King model that best fits the projected star density distribution, with a constant inner plateau (at ${\sigma}_0 \sim $ 12 km s$^{-1}$) and no evidence of a central cusp or other significant deviations. Our data allowed to study the presence of rotation only in the innermost regions of the cluster (r < 5$"$), revealing a well-defined pattern of ordered rotation with a position angle of the rotation axis of $\sim$132 $\pm$ 2{\deg} and an amplitude of $\sim$3 km s$^{-1}$ (corresponding to Vrot/${\sigma}_0 \sim$ 0.3). We present metallicity and radial velocity for 450 bonafide members of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal (Sgr dSph) galaxy, measured from high resolution (R~18000) FLAMES@VLT spectra. The targets were carefully selected (a) to sample the core of the main body of Sgr dSph while avoiding contamination from the central stellar nucleus, and (b) to prevent any bias on the metallicity distribution, by selecting targets based on their Gaia parallax and proper motions. All the targets selected in this way were confirmed as radial velocity members. We used this sample to derive the first metallicity distribution of the core of the Sgr dSph virtually unaffected by metallicity biases. The observed distribution ranges from [Fe/H]~ -2.3 to [Fe/H]~ 0.0, with a strong, symmetric and relatively narrow peak around [Fe/H]~ -0.5 and a weak, extended metal-poor tail, with only 13.8 +/- 1.9% of the stars having [Fe/H]< -1.0. We confirm previous evidence of correlations between chemical and kinematical properties of stars in the core of Sgr. In our sample stars with [Fe/H]>= -0.6 display a lower velocity dispersion and a higher rotation amplitude than those with [Fe/H]< -0.6, confirming previous suggestions of a disk/halo structure for the progenitor of the system., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables, accepted by A&A

In recent years, Galactic archaeology has become a particularly vibrant field of astronomy, with its main focus set on the oldest stars of our Galaxy. In most cases, these stars have been identified as the most metal-poor. However, the struggle to find these ancient fossils has produced an important bias in the observations - in particular, the intermediate metal-poor stars (-2.5<[Fe/H]< -1.5) have been frequently overlooked. The missing information has consequences for the precise study of the chemical enrichment of our Galaxy, in particular for what concerns neutron-capture elements and it will be only partially covered by future multi-object spectroscopic surveys such as WEAVE and 4MOST. Measuring at Intermediate Metallicity Neutron Capture Elements (MINCE) is gathering the first high-quality spectra (high S/N ratio and high resolution) for several hundreds of bright and metal-poor stars, mainly located in our Galactic halo. We compiled our selection mainly on the basis of Gaia data and determined the stellar atmospheres of our sample and the chemical abundances of each star. In this paper, we present the first sample of 59 spectra of 46 stars. We measured the radial velocities and computed the Galactic orbits for all stars. We found that 8 stars belong to the thin disc, 15 to disrupted satellites, and the remaining cannot be associated to the mentioned structures, and we call them halo stars. For 33 of these stars, we provide abundances for the elements up to zinc. We also show the chemical evolution results for eleven chemical elements, based on recent models. Our observational strategy of using multiple telescopes and spectrographs to acquire high S/N and high-resolution spectra has proven to be very efficient since the present sample was acquired over only about one year of observations. Context. Sulfur (S) is one of the lesser-studied $\alpha$-elements. Published investigations of its behavior have so far focused on local stars, and only a few clusters of the Milky Way have been considered to study this topic. We aim to study the S content of the globular cluster Ruprecht 106 -- which has never before been studied for this purpose, but is known to present low levels of the [$\alpha$/Fe] abundance ratio -- and the open cluster Trumpler 5. The only star studied so far in Trumpler 5 shows an unexpectedly low abundance of S. Aims. With this work, we aim to provide the first S abundance in Ruprecht 106 and to investigate the S content of Trumpler 5 with a larger sample of stars. The open cluster Trumpler 20 is considered as a reference object. Methods. We performed a standard abundance analysis based on 1D model atmospheres in local thermodynamical equilibrium (LTE) and on high-resolution and high-signal-to-noise-ratio UVES-slit and UVES/FLAMES spectra. We also applied corrections for nonLTE. The metallicities of the targets were obtained by studying equivalent widths. Sulfur abundances were derived from multiplets 1, 6, and 8 by spectrosynthesis. Results. We find that the metallicities of Ruprecht 106 and Trumpler 5 are [Fe/H]= -1.37+/-0.11 and [Fe/H]= -0.49+/-0.14, respectively. Ruprecht 106 is less S-rich than the other Galactic clusters at similar metallicity. The low S content of Ruprecht 106, [S/Fe]NLTE= -0.52+/-0.13, is consistent with its shortage of $\alpha$-elements. This supports an extra-galactic origin of this cluster. We obtained a new and more robust S content value of Trumpler 5 of about [S/Fe]NLTE= 0.05+/-0.20. According to our results, Trumpler 5 follows the trend of the Galactic disk in the [S/Fe]LTE versus [Fe/H] diagram. Our results for Trumpler 20, of namely [Fe/H]= 0.06+/-0.15 and [S/Fe]NLTE= -0.28+/-0.21, are in agreement with those in the literature., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables

Photometric investigations have revealed that Galactic globular clusters exhibit internal metallicity variations amongst the so-called first-population stars, until now considered to have a homogeneous initial chemical composition. This is not fully supported by the sparse spectroscopic evidence, which so far gives conflicting results. Here, we present a high-resolution re-analysis of five stars in the Galactic globular cluster NGC 2808 taken from the literature. Target stars are bright red giants with nearly identical atmospheric parameters belonging to the first population according to their identification in the chromosome map of the cluster, and we have measured precise differential abundances for Fe, Si, Ca, Ti, and Ni to the ~0.03 dex level. Thanks to the very small uncertainties associated to the differential atmospheric parameters and abundance measurements, we find that target stars span a range of iron abundance equal to 0.25 +/- 0.06 dex. The individual elemental abundances are highly correlated with the position of the star along the extended sequence described by first population objects in the cluster chromosome map: bluer stars have a lower iron content. This agrees with inferences from the photometric analysis. The differential abundances for all other elements also show statistically significant ranges that point to intrinsic abundance spreads. The Si, Ca, Ti, and Ni variations are highly correlated with iron variations and the total abundance spreads for all elements are consistent within the error bars. This suggests a scenario in which short-lived massive stars exploding as supernovae contributed to the self-enrichment of the gas in the natal cloud while star formation was still ongoing., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures. The Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey is an ambitious project designed to obtain astrophysical parameters and elemental abundances for 100,000 stars, including large representative samples of the stellar populations in the Galaxy, and a well-defined sample of 60 (plus 20 archive) open clusters. We provide internally consistent results calibrated on benchmark stars and star clusters, extending across a very wide range of abundances and ages. This provides a legacy data set of intrinsic value, and equally a large wide-ranging dataset that is of value for homogenisation of other and future stellar surveys and Gaia's astrophysical parameters. This article provides an overview of the survey methodology, the scientific aims, and the implementation, including a description of the data processing for the GIRAFFE spectra. A companion paper (arXiv:2206.02901) introduces the survey results. Gaia-ESO aspires to quantify both random and systematic contributions to measurement uncertainties. Thus all available spectroscopic analysis techniques are utilised, each spectrum being analysed by up to several different analysis pipelines, with considerable effort being made to homogenise and calibrate the resulting parameters. We describe here the sequence of activities up to delivery of processed data products to the ESO Science Archive Facility for open use. The Gaia-ESO Survey obtained 202,000 spectra of 115,000 stars using 340 allocated VLT nights between December 2011 and January 2018 from GIRAFFE and UVES. The full consistently reduced final data set of spectra was released through the ESO Science Archive Facility in late 2020, with the full astrophysical parameters sets following in 2022., Comment: 38 pages. In the last 15 years different ground-based spectroscopic surveys have been started (and completed) with the general aim of delivering stellar parameters and elemental abundances for large samples of Galactic stars, complementing Gaia astrometry. Among those surveys, the Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey (GES), the only one performed on a 8m class telescope, was designed to target 100,000 stars using FLAMES on the ESO VLT (both Giraffe and UVES spectrographs), covering all the Milky Way populations, with a special focus on open star clusters. This article provides an overview of the survey implementation (observations, data quality, analysis and its success, data products, and releases), of the open cluster survey, of the science results and potential, and of the survey legacy. A companion article (Gilmore et al.) reviews the overall survey motivation, strategy, Giraffe pipeline data reduction, organisation, and workflow. The GES has determined homogeneous good-quality radial velocities and stellar parameters for a large fraction of its more than 110,000 unique target stars. Elemental abundances were derived for up to 31 elements for targets observed with UVES. Lithium abundances are delivered for about 1/3 of the sample. The analysis and homogenisation strategies have proven to be successful; several science topics have been addressed by the Gaia-ESO consortium and the community, with many highlight results achieved. The final catalogue has been released through the ESO archive at the end of May 2022, including the complete set of advanced data products. We present the first systematic study of lithium abundance in a chemically homogeneous sample of 27 red supergiants (RSGs) in the young Perseus complex. For these stars, accurate stellar parameters and detailed chemical abundances of iron and iron peak, CNO, alpha, light and neutron-capture elements have been already obtained by means of high resolution optical and near-infrared spectroscopy. The observed RSGs have half-solar metallicity, 10-30 Myr age, bolometric luminosities in the 10$^4$-10$^5$ L$_{\odot}$ range and likely mass progenitors in the 9-14 M$_{\odot}$ range. We detected the optical Li I doublet in eight out of the 27 observed K and M type RSGs, finding relatively low A(Li)$<$1.0 dex abundances, while for the remaining 19 RSGs upper limits of A(Li)$<$-0.2 dex have been set. Warmer and less luminous (i.e. likely less massive) as well as less mixed (i.e. with lower [C/N] and $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C depletion) RSGs with Li detection show somewhat higher Li abundances. In order to explain Li detection in $\sim$30\% of the observed RSGs, we speculate that some stochasticity and a scenario where Li was not completely destroyed in the convective atmospheres and/or a secondary production took place during the post-Main Sequence evolution, should be at work., Comment: Published on ApJ; 6 pages, 2 figures

The surface lithium abundance A(Li) of warm metal-poor dwarf stars exhibits a narrow plateau down to [Fe/H]~-2.8 dex, while at lower metallicities the average value drops by 0.3 dex with a significant star-by-star scatter (called lithium meltdown). This behaviour is in conflict with predictions of standard stellar evolution models calculated with the initial A(Li) provided by the standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis. The lower red giant branch (LRGB) stars provide a complementary tool to understand the initial A(Li) distribution in metal-poor stars. We have collected a sample of high-resolution spectra of 58 LRGB stars spanning a range of [Fe/H] between ~ -7.0 dex and ~ -1.3 dex. The LRGB stars display an A(Li) distribution clearly different from that of the dwarfs, without signatures of a meltdown and with two distinct components: (a) a thin A(Li) plateau with an average A(Li)=1.09+-0.01 dex (sigma=0.07 dex), and (b) a small fraction of Li-poor stars with A(Li) lower than ~0.7 dex. The A(Li) distribution observed in LRGB stars can be reconciled with an initial abundance close to the cosmological value, by including an additional chemical element transport in stellar evolution models. The required efficiency of this transport allows us to match also the Spite plateau lithium abundance measured in the dwarfs. The emerging scenario is that all metal-poor stars formed with the same initial A(Li) but those that are likely the product of coalescence or that experienced binary mass transfer and show lower A(Li) . We conclude that A(Li) in LRGB stars is qualitatively compatible with the cosmological A(Li) value and that the meltdown observed in dwarf stars does not reflect a real drop of the abundance at birth., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 7 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

We present an investigation of the internal kinematic properties of M79 (NGC 1904). Our study is based on radial velocity measurements obtained from the ESO-VLT Multi-Instrument Kinematic Survey (MIKiS) of Galactic globular clusters for more than 1700 individual stars distributed between $\sim 0.3^{\prime\prime}$ and $770^{\prime\prime}$ ($\sim14$ three-dimensional half-mass radii), from the center. Our analysis reveals the presence of ordered line-of-sight rotation with a rotation axis almost aligned along the East-West direction and a velocity peak of $1.5$ km s$^{-1}$ at $\sim 70^{\prime\prime}$ from the rotation axis. The velocity dispersion profile is well described by the same King model that best fits the projected density distribution, with a constant central plateau at $\sigma_0\sim 6$ km s$^{-1}$. To investigate the cluster rotation in the plane of the sky, we have analyzed the proper motions provided by the Gaia EDR3, finding a signature of rotation with a maximum amplitude of $\sim 2.0$ km s$^{-1}$ at $\sim 80^{\prime\prime}$ from the cluster center. Analyzing the three-dimensional velocity distribution, for a sub-sample of 130 stars, we confirm the presence of systemic rotation and find a rotation axis inclination angle of $37${\deg} with respect to the line-of-sight. As a final result, the comparison of the observed rotation curves with the results of a representative N-body simulation of a rotating star cluster shows that the present-day kinematic properties of NGC 1904 are consistent with those of a dynamically old system that has lost a significant fraction of its initial angular momentum., Comment: 30 pages, 20 figures, 8 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present [K/Fe] abundance ratios for a sample of 450 stars in Omega Centauri, using high resolution spectra acquired with the multi-object spectrograph FLAMES@VLT. Abundances for Fe, Na and Mg were also derived. We detected intrinsic K variations in the analysed stars. Moreover, [K/Fe] shows a significant correlation with [Na/Fe] and anti-correlation with [Mg/Fe]. The presence of a clear-cut Mg-K anti-correlation makes Omega Centauri the third stellar system, after NGC 2419 and NGC 2808, hosting a sub-population of stars with [Mg/Fe]<0.0 dex, K-enriched in the case of Omega Centauri by ~0.3 dex with respect to the Mg-rich stars ([Mg/Fe]>0.0 dex). The correlation/anti-correlation between K and other light elements involved in chemical anomalies supports the idea that the spread in [K/Fe] can be associated to the same self-enrichment process typical of globular clusters. We suggest that significant variations in K abundances perhaps can be found in the most massive and/or metal-poor globular clusters as manifestation of an extreme self-enrichment process. Theoretical models face problems to explain the K production in globular clusters. Indeed, models where asymptotic giant branch stars are responsible for the Mg-K anti-correlation only qualitatively agree with the observations. Finally, we discovered a peculiar star with an extraordinary K overabundance ([K/Fe]=+1.60 dex) with respect to the other stars with similar [Mg/Fe]. We suggest that this K-rich star could be formed from the pure ejecta of AGB stars before dilution with pristine material., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

Stellar ejecta gradually enrich the gas out of which subsequent stars form, making the least chemically enriched stellar systems direct fossils of structures formed in the early universe. Although a few hundred stars with metal content below one thousandth of the solar iron content are known in the Galaxy, none of them inhabit globular clusters, some of the oldest known stellar structures. These show metal content of at least ~0.2 percent of the solar metallicity ([Fe/H] > -2.7). This metallicity floor appears universal and it has been proposed that proto-galaxies that merge into the galaxies we observe today were simply not massive enough to form clusters that survived to the present day. Here, we report the discovery of a stellar stream, C-19, whose metallicity is less than 0.05 per cent the solar metallicity ([Fe/H]=-3.38 +/- 0.06 (stat.) +/- 0.20 (syst.)). The low metallicity dispersion and the chemical abundances of the C-19 stars show that this stream is the tidal remnant of the most metal-poor globular cluster ever discovered, and significantly below the purported metallicity floor: clusters with significantly lower metallicities than observed today existed in the past and contributed their stars to the Milky Way halo., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables. Context. The Perseus complex in the outer disk of the Galaxy hosts a number of clusters and associations of young stars. Gaia is providing a detailed characterization of their kinematic structure and evolutionary properties. Aims. Within the SPA Large Programme at the TNG, we secured HARPS-N and GIANO-B high-resolution optical and near-infrared (NIR) spectra of the young red supergiant (RSG) stars in the Perseus complex, in order to obtain accurate radial velocities, stellar parameters and detailed chemical abundances. Methods. We used spectral synthesis to best-fit hundreds of atomic and molecular lines in the spectra of the observed 27 RSGs. We obtained accurate estimates of the stellar temperature, gravity, micro and macro turbulence velocities and chemical abundances for 25 different elements. We also measured the $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C abundance ratio. Results. Our combined optical and NIR chemical study provides homogeneous half-solar iron with a small dispersion, about solar-scaled abundance ratios for the iron-peak, alpha and other light elements and a small enhancement of Na, K and neutron-capture elements, consistent with the thin disk chemistry traced by older stellar populations at a similar Galactocentric distance of about 10 kpc. We present the result of a detailed analysis of HST UV and optical deep images of the massive and young (~1.5 Gyr) stellar cluster NGC 1783 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This system does not show evidences of multiple populations (MPs) along the red giant branch (RGB) stars. However, we find that the cluster main-sequence (MS) shows evidence of a significant broadening (50% larger than what is expected from photometric errors) along with hints of possible bimodality in the MP sensitive (F343N - F438W, F438W) color-magnitude-diagram (CMD). Such an effect is observed in all color combinations including the F343N filter, while it is not found in the optical CMDs. This observational evidence suggests we might have found light-element chemical abundance variations along the MS of NGC 1783, which represents the first detection of MPs in a system younger than 2 Gyr. A comparison with isochrones including MP-like abundances shows that the observed broadening is compatible with a N abundance enhancement of Delta([N/Fe]) ~0.3. Our analysis also confirms previous results about the lack of MPs along the cluster RGB. However, we find that the apparent disagreement between the results found on the MS and the RGB is compatible with the mixing effects linked to the first dredge-up. According to the standard cosmological scenario, the large galaxies that we observe today have reached their current mass via mergers with smaller galaxy satellites (Moore et al.1999). This hierarchical process is expected to take place on smaller scales for the satellites themselves, that should build-up from the accretion of smaller building blocks (D'Onghia & Lake 2008). The best chance we have to test this prediction is by looking at the most massive satellite of the Milky Way (MW): the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Smaller galaxies have been revealed to orbit around the LMC (Erkal & Belokurov 2020, Patel et al. 2020), but so far the only evidence for mutual interactions is related to the orbital interplay with the nearby Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), which is the most massive LMC satellite. In this work, we report the likely discovery of a past merger event that the LMC experienced with a galaxy with a low star formation efficiency and likely having a stellar mass similar to those of dwarf spheroidal galaxies. This former LMC satellite has now completely dissolved, depositing the old globular cluster (GC) NGC 2005 as part of its debris. This GC is the only surviving witness of this ancient merger event, recognizable through its peculiar chemical composition. Classical Cepheids are primary distance indicators and a crucial stepping stone to determining the present-day Hubble constant Ho to the precision and accuracy required to constrain apparent deviations from the LCDM Concordance Cosmological Model. We have measured the iron and oxygen abundances of of 89 Cepheids in the LMC, one of the anchors of the local Distance Scale, quadrupling the prior sample and including 68 of the 70 Cepheids used to constrain Ho by the SH0ES program. The goal is to constrain the extent to which the Cepheid luminosity is influenced by their chemical composition, an important contributor to the uncertainty on the determination of the Ho itself and a critical factor in the internal consistency of the distance ladder. We have derived stellar parameters and abundances from a self-consistent spectroscopic analysis based on Equivalent Width of absorption lines. The [Fe/H] distribution of LMC Cepheids is a single Gaussian with a mean of -0.4079+-0.003 dex (0.1 dex systematic uncertainty) and sigma 0.076+-0.003 dex. The latter is fully compatible with the measurement error and supports the low dispersion of 0.069 mag seen in the NIR HST LMC period-luminosity relation. The uniformity of the abundance has the important consequence that the LMC Cepheids alone cannot provide any meaningful constraint on the dependence of the Cepheid Period-Luminosity relation on chemical composition at any wavelength. This revises a prior claim based on a small sample of 22 LMC Cepheids that there was little dependence (or uncertainty) between composition and NIR luminosity, a conclusion which would produce a conflict between anchors of the distance ladder with different mean abundance. The chemical homogeneity of the LMC Cepheid population makes it an ideal environment to calibrate the metallicity dependence between the more metal poor SMC and metal rich Milky Way and NGC4258., Comment: A&A in press, 14 pages, 13 figures

In the search of a sample of metal-poor bright giants using Str{\"o}mgren photometry, we serendipitously found a sample of 26 young (ages younger than 1 Gyr) metal-rich giants, some of which have high rotational velocities.We determined the chemical composition and rotational velocities of these stars in order to compare them with predictions from stellar evolution models. These stars where of spectral type A to B when on the main sequence, and we therefore wished to compare their abundance pattern to that of main-sequence A and B stars.Stellar masses were derived by comparison of the position of the stars in the colour-magnitude diagram with theoretical evolutionary tracks. These masses, together with Gaia photometry and parallaxes, were used to derive the stellar parameters. We used spectrum synthesis and model atmospheres to determine chemical abundances for 16 elements (C, N, O, Mg, Al, Ca, Fe, Sr, Y, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, and Eu) and rotational velocities.The age-metallicity degeneracy can affect photometric metallicity calibrations. We identify 15 stars as likely binary stars. All stars are in prograde motion around the Galactic centre and belong to the thin-disc population. All but one of the sample stars present low [C/Fe] and high [N/Fe] ratios together with constant [(C+N+O)/Fe], suggesting that they have undergone CNO processing and first dredge-up.
