The Microwave SQUID Multiplexer (μ MUX) is the device of choice for the readout of a large number of low-temperature detectors in a wide variety of experiments within the fields of astronomy and particle physics. While it offers large multiplexing factors, the system noise performance is highly dependent on the cold- and warm-readout electronic systems used to read it out, as well as the demodulation domain and parameters chosen. In order to understand the impact of the readout systems in the overall detection system noise performance, first, we extended the available μ MUX simulation frameworks, including additive and multiplicative noise sources in the probing tones (i.e., phase and amplitude noise), along with the capability of demodulating the scientific data, either in the resonator's phase or the scattering amplitude. Then, considering the additive noise as a dominant noise source, the optimum readout parameters to achieve minimum system noise were found for both open-loop and flux-ramp demodulation schemes in the aforementioned domains. Later, we evaluated the system noise sensitivity to multiplicative noise sources under the optimum readout parameters. Finally, as a case study, we evaluated the optimal demodulation domain and the expected system noise level for a typical software-defined radio readout system. This work leads to an improved system performance prediction and noise engineering based on the available readout electronics and the selected demodulation domain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Q&U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QL’BIC) is the first bolometric interferometer designed to measure the primordial B-mode polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Bolometric interferometry is a novel technique that combines the sensitivity of bolometric detectors with the control of systematic effects that is typical of interferometry, both key features in the quest for the faint signal of the primordial B-modes. A unique feature is the so-called “spectral imaging”, i.e., the ability to recover the sky signal in several sub-bands within the physical band during data analysis. This feature provides an in-band spectral resolution of ∆v/v ~ 0.04 that is unattainable by a traditional imager. This is a key tool for controlling the Galactic foregrounds contamination. In this paper, we describe the principles of bolometric interferometry, the current status of the QU BIC experiment and future prospects.

- Abstract
Background: Mortality among people with HIV declined with the introduction of combination antiretroviral therapy. We investigated trends over time in all-cause and cause-specific mortality in people with HIV from 1999-2020. Methods: Data were collected from the D:A:D cohort from 1999 through January 2015 and RESPOND from October 2017 through 2020. Age-standardized all-cause and cause-specific mortality rates, classified using Coding Causes of Death in HIV (CoDe), were calculated. Poisson regression models were used to assess mortality trends over time. Results: Among 55716 participants followed for a median of 6 years (IQR 3-11), 5263 participants died (crude mortality rate [MR] 13.7/1000 PYFU; 95%CI 13.4-14.1). Changing patterns of mortality were observed with AIDS as the most common cause of death between 1999- 2009 (n = 952, MR 4.2/1000 PYFU; 95%CI 4.0-4.5) and non-AIDS defining malignancy (NADM) from 2010 -2020 (n = 444, MR 2.8/1000 PYFU; 95%CI 2.5-3.1). In multivariable analysis, all-cause mortality declined over time (adjusted mortality rate ratio [aMRR] 0.97 per year; 95%CI 0.96, 0.98), mostly from 1999 through 2010 (aMRR 0.96 per year; 95%CI 0.95-0.97), and with no decline shown from 2011 through 2020 (aMRR 1·00 per year; 95%CI 0·96-1·05). Mortality due all known causes except NADM also declined over the entire follow-up period. Conclusion: Mortality among people with HIV in the D:A:D and/or RESPOND cohorts decreased between 1999 and 2009 and was stable over the period from 2010 through 2020. The decline in mortality rates was not fully explained by improvements in immunologic-virologic status or other risk factors.

- Abstract
Reflecting on the insights from research development within Urban Biodiversity and Design Network (URBIO), this paper attempts to link the consequences of current global changes (ongoing urbanization, biodiversity loss, land-use changes, globalization, etc.) to the emergence and outbreaks of the COVID-19 pandemic. It analyses the main outcomes of the URBIO webinar (December 2021) and the URBIO conference (November 2022) and the results of the questionnaire survey among the URBIO experts on the impact of COVID-19 on the biodiversity, design and society in their local contexts as well as on the ongoing and future URBIO research directions. The survey also enabled to explore and assess a wide diversity of human-nature interactions as well as the novel actions and adaptation strategies established to have positive outcomes for both humans and nature. The results revealed the following aspects associated with the COVID-19 pandemic: silence, social distancing, isolation, conflict ideologies, and declined recreational and other human activities. Experts noticed the increase of urban green space visitation and interest in nature. The majority of the experts confirmed the impact (both positive and negative) of the COVID-19 on biodiversity and environment. General positive aspects refer to the value/significance of nature and biodiversity/wildlife and especially the contact with nature (“time outdoor”, “time spent with family”, “inspiration from nature” and “enjoying nature”). The positive consequence of the COVID-19 measures was also the improvement of wildlife habitats and the increase of spontaneous flora as well as fauna species. Experts confirmed the lower/decreased level of pollution, noise, traffic, light, anthropogenic pressure/impact, number of tourists, vehicles as well as less garbage. Diurnal and seasonal variations in soil and surface temperature measured with the HP3 ${\mathrm{H}\mathrm{P}}^{3}$ thermal probe and radiometer of NASA's InSight Mars mission are reported. At a representative depth of 10–20 cm, an average temperature of 217.5 K was found, varying by 5.3–6.7 K during a sol and by 13.3 K during the seasons. From the damping of the temperature variation with depth and the phase shift, a thermal diffusivity of (3.93 ± $\pm $ 0.39) × 10−8 ${10}^{-8}$m2 ${\mathrm{m}}^{2}$/s was derived for the upper ∼ ${\sim} $10 cm from the diurnal temperature variation and of (3.63 ± $\pm $ 0.53) × 10−8 ${10}^{-8}$m2 ${\mathrm{m}}^{2}$/s for the ∼ ${\sim} $40 cm depth range of the mole from the annual temperature variation. Using published thermal conductivity and inertia values together with the diffusivities, soil densities of 1,470 and 1,730 kg/m3 ${m}^{3}$ were derived for these depths. The temperatures allow the deliquescence of thin films of brine, the efflorescence of which may explain the cemented duricrust observed. Plain Language Summary: Temperature is an important factor in understanding the physical properties of Martian soil. It determines how quickly physical processes and chemical reactions occur, including the transport of heat and materials. Temperature is crucial to astrobiology because it affects the habitability of the soil and the potential for water or brine to support microbial life. We measured the temperature in the soil during several Martian days and over a Martian year using the NASA InSight Mars mission's Heat Flow and Physical Properties Package. The average temperature was −56°C (217.5 K) over the depth extent of the thermal probe, which was about 40 cm. The temperature varied by 5–7° during the day, which is only a tenth of the daily surface temperature variation. It varied by 13° during the seasons. The temperature is subfreezing for water, but it allows the formation of thin films of salty brine for 10 hr or more during a Martian day. The solidification of the brine is a likely explanation for the observed few tens of centimeters thick duricrust, a layer of consolidated, cohesive sand, which is thought to have hampered the penetration to greater depth of the mission's thermal probe. Starting with the Chern-Simons formulation of (2+1)-dimensional gravity we show that the gravitational interactions deform the Poincare symmetry of flat space-time to a quantum group symmetry. The relevant quantum group is the quantum double of the universal cover of the (2+1)-dimensional Lorentz group, or Lorentz double for short. We construct the Hilbert space of two gravitating particles and use the universal R-matrix of the Lorentz double to derive a general expression for the scattering cross section of gravitating particles with spin. 32. Topological field theory and the quantum double of SU(2)

We study the quantum mechanics of a system of topologically interacting particles in 2+1 dimensions, which is described by coupling the particles to a Chern-Simons gauge field of an inhomogeneous group. Analysis of the phase space shows that for the particular case of ISO(3) Chern-Simons theory the underlying symmetry is that of the quantum double D(SU(2)), based on the homogeneous part of the gauge group. This in contrast to the usual q-deformed gauge group itself, which occurs in the case of a homogeneous gauge group. Subsequently, we describe the structure of the quantum double of a continuous group and the classification of its unitary irreducible representations. The comultiplication and the R-element of the quantum double allow for a natural description of the fusion properties and the nonabelian braid statistics of the particles. These typically manifest themselves in generalised Aharonov-Bohm scattering processes, for which we compute the differential cross sections. We consider the quantum double D(G) of a compact group G, following an earlier paper. We use the explicit comultiplication on D(G) in order to build tensor products of irreducible *-representations. Then we study their behaviour under the action of the R-matrix, and their decomposition into irreducible *-representations. The example of D(SU(2)) is treated in detail, with explicit formulas for direct integral decomposition (`Clebsch-Gordan series') and Clebsch-Gordan coefficients. The T-cell-mediated immune response exhibits a crucial function in the control of the intrahepatic proliferation of Echinococcus multilocularis larvae in mice and humans, both being natural intermediate hosts of the parasite. Antigen B (AgB), a metabolized Echinococcus spp. lipoprotein, contributes to the modulation of the T-cell immune response, and distinct sites of the corresponding AgB1, AgB3 and AgB4 genes were shown to be under positive selection pressure. Since several AgB gene variants are present in a single Echinococcus metacestode, we used secondary E. multilocularis infections in BALB/c and in athymic nude mice (devoid of T-cell responses) to analyze the effect of the cellular immune response on the expression and diversity of EmAgB1-EmAgB4 genes. We demonstrated hereby that EmAgB transcripts were less abundant in nude mice during the early phase of infection (at one month post-infection), and that EmAgB2 is simultaneously down-regulated when compared to the other three genes. A negative relationship exists between the level of transcription and diversity of EmAgB genes. Moreover, no excess of non-synonymous substitutions was found among the distinct EmAgB alleles from a single host. Together, these results pointed to the effect of purifying selection, which seemed to eliminate the detrimental AgB variants generated during the development of the metacestode within the peritoneal cavity of its intermediate host.

We generalise the quantum double construction of Drinfel'd to the case of the (Hopf) algebra of suitable functions on a compact or locally compact group. We will concentrate on the *-algebra structure of the quantum double. If the conjugacy classes in the group are countably separated, then we classify the irreducible *-representations by using the connection with so-called transformation group algebras. For finite groups, we will compare our description to the result of Dijkgraaf, Pasquier and Roche. Finally we will work out the explicit examples of SU(2) and SL(2,R)., Comment: LaTeX2e, 18 pages. Numerous genetic variants of the Echinococcus antigen B (AgB) are encountered within a single metacestode. This could be a reflection of gene redundancy or the result of a somatic hypermutation process. We evaluate the complexity of the AgB multigene family by characterizing the upstream promoter regions of the 4 already known genes (EgAgB1-EgAgB4) and evaluating their redundancy in the genome of 3 Echinococcus species (E. granulosus, E. ortleppi and E. multilocularis) using PCR-based approaches. We have ascertained that the number of AgB gene copies is quite variable, both within and between species. The most repetitive gene seems to be AgB3, of which there are more than 110 copies in E. ortleppi. For E. granulosus, we have cloned and characterized 10 distinct upstream promoter regions of AgB3 from a single metacestode. Our sequences suggest that AgB1 and AgB3 are involved in gene conversion. These results are discussed in light of the role of gene redundancy and recombination in parasite evasion mechanisms of host immunity, which at present are known for protozoan organisms, but virtually unknown for multicellular parasites.

- Abstract
Instrumental voice analysis techniques aim to objectively describe characteristics of vocal production and output. For both clinical and research questions, a variety of instrumental methods to describe features of the three main subsystems of voice production, phonation, respiration, and resonance, are available. Assessment techniques are mainly classified as direct methods to visualize the physiology and activity of laryngeal structures such as by laryngostroboscopy or videokymography (VKG), and indirect methods to objectively assess acoustic properties of the human voice sound (i.e. vocal output). Moreover, semi‐direct methods provide information regarding vocal fold and respiration physiology without visualizing, and include electromyography, subglottal pressure estimates, and electroglottography (Awan, 2008). In a diagnostic setting, clinicians aim to determine the cause and consequences of disordered voice production to tailor a specific treatment for the individual patient. A disordered voice production may result from changes in the structure (such as vocal fold nodules or edema), innervation (such as in vocal fold paralysis), or muscular function of the phonatory system. Therefore, as recommended by European and American clinician associations, a comprehensive voice examination usually includes subjective, visual, perceptual, aerodynamic, and instrumental acoustic assessment techniques (Dejonckere et al., 2001; Patel et al., 2018). Scope of the present chapter is to review advantages, disadvantages and applications of the most widely used indirect instrumental acoustic and direct visual assessment techniques applied in voice diagnostics and research.

- Abstract
In this work we present an application of the Goertzel Filter for the channelization of multi-tonal signals, typically used for the read-out of cryogenic sensors which are multiplexed in the frequency domain (FDM), by means of Microwave Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) Multiplexer ($\mu$MUX). We demonstrate how implementing a bank of many of these filters, can be used to perform a channelization of the multi-tonal input signal to retrieve the data added by the sensors. We show how this approach can be implemented in a resource-efficient manner in a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) within the state-of-the-art, which allows great scalability for reading thousands of sensors; as is required by Radio Telescopes in Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMB) surveys using cryogenic bolometers, particles detection like Neutrino mass estimation using cryogenic calorimeters or Quantum Computing., Comment: 17 pages, 18 figures, paper submitted for review for the Journal of Instrumentation (JINST)

- Abstract
The Q&U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QUBIC) is the first bolometric interferometer designed to measure the primordial B-mode polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Bolometric interferometry is a novel technique that combines the sensitivity of bolometric detectors with the control of systematic effects that is typical of interferometry, both key features in the quest for the faint signal of the primordial B-modes. A unique feature is the so-called "spectral imaging", i.e., the ability to recover the sky signal in several sub-bands within the physical band during data analysis. This feature provides an in-band spectral resolution of \Delta{\nu}/{\nu} \sim 0.04 that is unattainable by a traditional imager. This is a key tool for controlling the Galactic foregrounds contamination.
