Magnetically confined plasmas are often subject to relaxation oscillations accompanied by large transport events. This is particularly the case for the high confinement regime of tokamaks where these events are termed edge localized modes (ELMs). They result in the temporary breakdown of the high confinement and lead to high power loads on plasma facing components. Present theories of ELM generation rely on a combined effect of edge currents and the edge pressure gradient exceeding critical values which result in intermediate mode number ($n \cong 10-15$) structures (\emph{filaments}) localized in the perpendicular plane and extended along the field line. It is shown here by detailed localized measurements of the three components of the magnetic field perturbation carried by an individual type I ELM filament that these filaments carry a substantial current. The observations provide essential information for the understanding of ELM dynamics., Comment: submitted to Physical Review Letters. New revised version after other comments from another referee. Integrating the plasma core performance with an edge and scrape-off layer (SOL) that leads to tolerable heat and particle loads on the wall is a major challenge. The new European medium size tokamak task force (EU-MST) coordinates research on ASDEX Upgrade (AUG), MAST and TCV. This multi-machine approach within EU-MST, covering a wide parameter range, is instrumental to progress in the field, as ITER and DEMO core/pedestal and SOL parameters are not achievable simultaneously in present day devices. A two prong approach is adopted. On the one hand, scenarios with tolerable transient heat and particle loads, including active edge localised mode (ELM) control are developed. On the other hand, divertor solutions including advanced magnetic configurations are studied. Considerable progress has been made on both approaches, in particular in the fields of: ELM control with resonant magnetic perturbations (RMP), small ELM regimes, detachment onset and control, as well as filamentary scrape-off-layer transport. For example full ELM suppression has now been achieved on AUG at low collisionality with n = 2 RMP maintaining good confinement HH(98,y2)≈0.95. Advances have been made with respect to detachment onset and control. Studies in advanced divertor configurations (Snowflake, Super-X and X-point target divertor) shed new light on SOL physics. Cross field filamentary transport has been characterised in a wide parameter regime on AUG, MAST and TCV progressing the theoretical and experimental understanding crucial for predicting first wall loads in ITER and DEMO. Conditions in the SOL also play a crucial role for ELM stability and access to small ELM regimes. MAGNETIC fluids ,MAGNETIZATION - Abstract
We derive the complete set of macroscopic dynamic equations for ferrofluids in the nematic liquid crystal phase under an external magnetic field. We include the magnetization as an independent dynamic degree of freedom. Special emphasis is laid on possible static and dynamic cross couplings between magnetization, director reorientations and flow. As examples we discuss the field dependence of the sound spectrum and the rheology of shear flow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The first stage of a significant enhancement of the ASDEX Upgrade experiment with in-vessel coils for non-axisymmetric magnetic perturbations is now operational. First experiments have shown that ELM mitigation can be achieved using various perturbation field configurations with toroidal mode numbers n = 1, 2, 4. The main access criteria is the plasma edge pedestal density to exceed a threshold, which takes the lowest value of about 60% of the Greenwald density for resonant |n| = 1 perturbations. In H-mode plasmas, mode locking or error field-induced magnetic islands are generally not observed. Due to the low local shear of the plasma magnetic field in the vicinity of the perturbation coils around the outboard midplane, the magnetic perturbation is resonant simultaneously on several rational surfaces. It is hypothesised that the existence of image currents on these surfaces ensures good shielding of the error field in the confined plasma.

Operation with all tungsten plasma facing components has become routine in ASDEX Upgrade. The conditioning of the device is strongly simplified and short glow discharges are used only on a daily basis. The long term fuel retention was reduced by more than a factor of 5 as demonstrated in gas balance as well as in post mortem analyses. Injecting nitrogen for radiative cooling, discharges with additional heating power up to 23 MW have been achieved, providing good confinement (H98y2=1), divertor power loads around 5 MW m−2 and divertor temperatures below 10 eV. ELM mitigation by pellet ELM pacemaking or magnetic perturbation coils reduces the deposited energy during ELMs, but also keeps the W density at the pedestal low. As a recipe to keep the central W concentration sufficiently low, central (wave) heating is well established and low density H-Modes could be re-established with the newly available ECRH power of up to 4 MW. The ICRH induced W sources could be strongly reduced by applying boron coatings to the poloidal guard limiters.

- Abstract
For example full ELM suppression has now been achieved on AUG at low collisionality with n = 2 RMP maintaining good confinement .

Aim: Five years after the first survey the positron emission tomography (PET) council of the German Society of Nuclear Medicine (DGN) repeated a survey to re-evaluate the status of PET diagnostics in Germany based on the data of the year 2013. Methods: A web-based questionnaire was used for gathering information retrospectively. Details regarding the physicians involved in PET operations, PET systems, and radiopharmaceuticals were also part of the survey as well as indications and number of studies. Furthermore, the role of PET and PET/CT within the diagnostic process was evaluated. In addition, official statistical hospital reports were analysed. Results: Responses from 52 sites were analysed. They reported a total of 38,350 PET studies in 2013. In the majority of cases PET was used in oncologic indications (87%). Further main applications were: neurology 6%, cardiology 1%, and inflammation 5%. University or other hospitals performed 85% of the studies. The portion of in-patients was 26%. Hybrid systems (56 PET/CT, 5 PET/MRT, and 2 stand-alone PET) were most frequently used for imaging. The radiotracers were labelled with F-18 in 90% of the studies, whereas Ga-68 was used in 9% and C-11 in 1%. Lung tumours were the most investigated tumour entity (40%), followed by malignant lymphoma (8%), tumours of the gastrointestinal tract (5%), and NET (5%). 20% of the 333 physicians hold a PET certificate awarded by the DGN. More than 50% of the facilities were certified according ISO9001, KTQ or QEP standard. The findings of nearly 60% of the oncological studies were discussed interdisciplinary in a tumour board. In federal statistical reports a 56% increase of in-patient PET operations during 5 years was found. Conclusion: In Germany, a moderate increase (9% per year) of PET studies is observed, but compared with other industrialised countries PET is still less established.

A reciprocating probe head with six pins was used for localized measurements of electric fields and densities in the scrape-off layer (SOL) of ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) up to the edge shear layer (SL) near the Last Closed Flux Surface (LCFS). The edge SL is characterized by a strong sudden change in the poloidal velocity v close to the separatrix. The probes were used to determine this velocity by different methods which are critically compared to each other concerning their reliability. By the first method the poloidal velocity was deduced from the radial electric field E-r measured by two radially staggered probe pins, with v being due to the E-r x B-phi-drift (B-phi is the toroidal field). The two other methods utilized the cross correlation of two poloidally staggered ion-biased probes and two poloidally staggered floating probes, respectively. In this case the time lags with maximum cross correlation were used to determine the poloidal velocity and its jump, yielding comparable results to the first method. Also the method of conditional averaging was applied to the latter signals.

Experiments have been carried out in the TEXTOR, ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) and Alcator C-Mod (C-Mod) tokamaks to study melt-layer motion, macroscopic W-erosion from the melt as well as the changes of material properties such as grain-size and voids. In addition the effect of multiple exposures is studied to judge the potential amelioration of inflicted melt damage. The parallel heat flux at the radial position of the PFCs in the plasma ranges from around q∥ ∼ 45 MW/m2 at TEXTOR up to q∥ ∼ 500 MW/m2 at C-Mod which covers scenarios close to ITER parameters, allowing samples to be exposed and molten even at shallow divertor angles. Melt-layer motion perpendicular to the magnetic field is observed consistent with a Lorentz-force originating from thermoelectric emission of the hot sample. While melting in the limiter geometry at TEXTOR is rather quiescent causing no severe impact on plasma operation, exposure in the divertors of AUG and C-Mod shows significant impact on operation, leading to subsequent disruptions. The power-handling capabilities are severely degraded by forming exposed hill structures and changing the material structure by re-solidifying and re-crystallizing the original material. Melting of W seems highly unfavorable and needs to be avoided especially in light of uncontrolled transients and misaligned PFCs.
