Abstract

With wide-field phased array feed technology,the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) is ideally suited to search for seemingly rare radio transient sources that are difficult to discover previous-generation narrow-field telescopes. The Commensal Real-time ASKAP Fast Transient (CRAFT) Survey Science Project has developed instrumentation to continuously search for fast radio transients (duration < 1 second) with ASKAP, with a particular focus on finding and localising Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs). Since 2018, the CRAFT survey has been searching for FRBs and other fast transients by incoherently adding the intensities received by individual ASKAP antennas, and then correcting for the impact of frequency dispersion on these short-duration signals in the resultant incoherent sum (ICS) in real-time. This low-latency detection enables the triggering of voltage buffers, which facilitates the localisation of the transient source and the study of spectro-polarimetric properties at high time resolution. Here we report the sample of 43 FRBs discovered in this CRAFT/ICS survey to date. This includes 22 FRBs that had not previously been reported: 16 FRBs localised by ASKAP to < 1 arcsec and 6 FRBs localised to ~ 10 arcmin. Of the new arcsecond-localised FRBs, we have identified and characterised host galaxies (and measured redshifts) for 11. The median of all 30 measured host redshifts from the survey to date is z=0.23. We summarise results from the searches, in particular those contributing to our understanding of the burst progenitors and emission mechanisms, and on the use of bursts as probes of intervening media. We conclude by foreshadowing future FRB surveys with ASKAP using a coherent detection system that is currently being commissioned. Abstract

FRB 20220610A is a high-redshift Fast Radio Burst (FRB) that has not been observed to repeat. Here, we present rest-frame UV and optical $\textit{Hubble Space Telescope}$ observations of the field of FRB 20220610A. The imaging reveals seven extended sources, one of which we identify as the most likely host galaxy with a spectroscopic redshift of $z$=1.017. We spectroscopically confirm at least three additional sources to be at the same redshift, and identify the system as a compact galaxy group with possible signs of interaction among group members. We determine the host of FRB 20220610A to be a star-forming galaxy with stellar mass of $\approx10^{9.7}\,M_{\odot}$, mass-weighted age of $\approx2.6$~Gyr, and star formation rate (integrated over the last 100 Myr) of $\approx1.7$~M$_{\odot}$~yr$^{-1}$. These host properties are commensurate with the star-forming field galaxy population at z~1 and trace their properties analogously to the population of low-$z$ FRB hosts. Based on estimates of the total stellar mass of the galaxy group, we calculate a fiducial contribution to the observed Dispersion Measure (DM) from the intragroup medium of $\approx 110-220$ $\rm pc \, cm^{-3}$ (rest-frame). This leaves a significant excess of $500^{+272}_{-109}$ $\rm pc \, cm^{-3}$ (in the observer frame), with additional sources of DM possibly originating from the circumburst environment, host galaxy interstellar medium, and/or foreground structures along the line of sight. Given the low occurrence rates of galaxies in compact groups, the discovery of an FRB in such a group demonstrates a rare and novel environment in which FRBs can occur., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables, submitted

Abstract

A new mechanism has been proposed to simultaneously explain the presence of dark matter and the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe. This scenario predicts exotic $B$ meson decays into a baryon and a dark sector anti-baryon ($\psi_D$) with branching fractions accessible at $B$ factories. We present a search for $B \rightarrow \Lambda \psi_D$ decays using data collected by the $BABAR$ experiment at SLAC. This reaction is identified by fully reconstructing the accompanying $B$ meson and requiring the presence of a single $\Lambda$ baryon in the remaining particles. No significant signal is observed, and bounds on the $B \rightarrow \Lambda \psi_D$ branching fraction are derived in the range $0.13 - 5.2\times 10^{-5}$ for $1.0 < m_{\psi_D} < 4.2$ GeV/$c^{2}$. These results set strong constraints on the parameter space allowed by the theory.

Abstract

We present the commissioning of the Fast Annihilation Cryogenic Tracker detector (FACT), installed around the antihydrogen production trap inside the 1 T superconducting magnet of the AE\=gIS experiment. FACT is designed to detect pions originating from the annihilation of antiprotons. Its 794 scintillating fibers operate at 4 K and are read out by silicon photomultipliers (MPPCs) at near room temperature. FACT provides the antiproton/antihydrogen annihilation position information with a few ns timing resolution. We present the hardware and software developments which led to the successful operation of the detector for antihydrogen detection and the results of an antiproton-loss based efficiency assessment. The main background to the antihydrogen signal is that of the positrons impinging onto the positronium conversion target and creating a large amount of gamma rays which produce a sizeable signal in the MPPCs shortly before the antihydrogen signal is expected. We detail the characterization of this background signal and its impact on the antihydrogen detection efficiency.

We report on a precision measurement of the ratio ${\cal R}_{\tau\mu}^{\Upsilon(3S)} = {\cal B}(\Upsilon(3S)\to\tau^+\tau^-)/{\cal B}(\Upsilon(3S)\to\mu^+\mu^-)$ using data collected with the BaBar detector at the SLAC PEP-II $e^+e^-$ collider. The measurement is based on a 28 fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected at a center-of-mass energy of 10.355 GeV corresponding to a sample of 122 million $\Upsilon(3S)$ mesons. The ratio is measured to be ${\cal R}_{\tau\mu}^{\Upsilon(3S)} = 0.966 \pm 0.008_\mathrm{stat} \pm 0.014_\mathrm{syst}$ and is in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 0.9948 within 2 standard deviations. The uncertainty in ${\cal R}_{\tau\mu}^{\Upsilon(3S)}$ is almost an order of magnitude smaller than the only previous measurement., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables

Abstract

We present a search for seven lepton-flavor-violating neutral charm decays of the type $D^{0}\rightarrow X^{0} e^{\pm} \mu^{\mp}$, where $X^{0}$ represents a $\pi^{0}$, $K^{0}_{\rm S}$, $\bar{K^{*0}}$, $\rho^{0}$, $\phi$, $\omega$, or $\eta$ meson. The analysis is based on $468$ fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected at or close to the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the BaBar detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. No significant signals are observed, and we establish 90\% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions in the range $(5.0 - 22.5)\times 10^{-7}$. Abstract

A study of the two body decays $B^\pm\rightarrow X_{c\bar c}K^\pm$, where X$_{c\bar c}$ refers to one charmonium state, is reported by BaBar collaboration using a data sample of 424 fb$^{-1}$. The absolute determination of branching fractions for these decays are significantly improved compared to previous BaBaR measurements. Evidence is found for the decay $B^+\rightarrow X(3872)K^+$ at the $3\sigma$ level. The absolute branching fraction ${\cal B}(B^+\rightarrow X(3872)K^+) = (2.1\pm0.6({\rm stat})\pm0.3({\rm syst}))\times 10^{-4}$ is measured for the first time. It follows that ${\cal B}(X(3872)\rightarrow J/\psi\pi^+\pi^-)=(4.1\pm1.3)\%$, supporting the hypothesis of a molecular component for this resonance., Comment: 8 pages 6 figures

Abstract

Joint user selection and precoding in multiuser MIMO settings can be interpreted as group sparse recovery in linear models. In this problem, a signal with group sparsity is to be reconstructed from an underdetermined system of equations. This paper utilizes this equivalent interpretation and develops a computationally tractable algorithm based on the method of group LASSO. Compared to the state of the art, the proposed scheme shows performance enhancements in two different respects: higher achievable sum-rate and lower interference at the non-selected user terminals.

Abstract

We search for the rare flavor-changing neutral current process $B^- \to \Lambda {\overline p} \nu{\overline{\nu}}$ using data from the BABAR experiment. A total of 424 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected at the center-of-mass energy of the $\Upsilon$(4S) resonance is used in this study, corresponding to a sample of ${(471 \pm 3) \times 10^{6}}$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs. Signal $B^- \to \Lambda {\overline p} \nu{\overline{\nu}}$ candidates are identified by first fully reconstructing a $B^+$ decay in one of many possible exclusive decays to hadronic final states, then examining detector activity that is not associated with this reconstructed $B^+$ decay for evidence of a signal $B^- \to \Lambda {\overline p} \nu{\overline{\nu}}$ decay. The data yield is found to be consistent with the expected background contribution under a null signal hypothesis, resulting in an upper limit of ${{\cal B} (B^- \to \Lambda {\overline p} \nu{\overline{\nu}}) < 3.0\times 10^{-5}}$ at the $90\%$ confidence level., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We present a search for nine lepton-number-violating and three lepton-flavor-violating neutral charm decays of the type $D^0\rightarrow h^{\prime -} h^{-}\ell^{\prime +} \ell^{+}$ and $D^0\rightarrow h^{\prime -} h^{+}\ell^{\prime\pm} \ell^{\mp}$, where $h$ and $h^{\prime}$ represent a $K$ or $\pi$ meson and $\ell$ and $\ell^{\prime}$ an electron or muon. The analysis is based on $468$ fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected at or close to the $Y(4S)$ resonance with the BaBar detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. No significant signal is observed for any of the twelve modes and we establish 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions in the range $(1.0 - 30.6)\times 10^{-7}$. The limits are between one and three orders of magnitude times more stringent than previous measurements., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

We investigate experimentally the possibility of enhancing the production of $2^3S$ positronium atoms by driving the $1^3S$-$3^3P$ and $3^3P$-$2^3S$ transitions, overcoming the natural branching ratio limitation of spontaneous decay from $3^3P$ to $2^3S$. The decay of $3^3P$ positronium atoms towards the $2^3S$ level has been effciently stimulated by a 1312.2nm broadband IR laser pulse. The dependence of the stimulating transition efficiency on the intensity of the IR pulse has been measured to find the optimal enhancement conditions. A maximum relative increase of $ \times (3.1 \pm 1.0) $ in the $2^3S$ production efficiency, with respect to the case where only spontaneous decay is present, was obtained., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Coherent beam combining refers to the process of generating a bright output beam by merging independent input beams with locked relative phases. We report the first quantum mechanical noise limit calculations for coherent beam combining and compare our results to quantum-limited amplification. Our coherent beam combining scheme is based on an optical Fourier transformation which renders the scheme compatible with integrated optics. The scheme can be layed out for an arbitrary number of input beams and approaches the shot noise limit for a large number of inputs.

34. Diagnostic Cases in Pre-Service Teacher Education: Effects of Text Characteristics and Empathy on Text-Based Cognitive Models

Abstract

In teacher education, case-based learning with text-based cases is an efficient method to foster pre-service teachers' diagnostic competence. To adaptively utilize text-based cases, knowledge about effects of text characteristics and empathy on processing text-based diagnostic information is needed, but still scarce. Our study focuses on effects of two text characteristics, text style and text subject, and of empathy on the accuracy of case-based cognitive models. We examined this experimentally. 391 pre-service teachers read a case in psycho-narrative or externally focalised style (text style) about test anxiety or dyscalculia (text subject). We measured self-reported state- and trait-empathy and assessed cognitive models with a recognition and verification test. Regression analyses showed a main effect of text-style but not of text-subject, trait- and state-empathy, and moderation effects of text style and affective (but not cognitive) state-empathy. We draw implications for adaptively designing text-based cases and possible mechanisms of how empathy is involved in diagnostic judgement formation.

Abstract

Positronium in the $2^3S$ metastable state exhibits a low electrical polarizability and a long lifetime (1140 ns) making it a promising candidate for interferometry experiments with a neutral matter-antimatter system. In the present work, $2^3S$ positronium is produced - in absence of electric field - via spontaneous radiative decay from the $3^3P$ level populated with a 205nm UV laser pulse. Thanks to the short temporal length of the pulse, 1.5 ns full-width at half maximum, different velocity populations of a positronium cloud emitted from a nanochannelled positron/positronium converter were selected by delaying the excitation pulse with respect to the production instant. $ 2^3S $ positronium atoms with velocity tuned between $ 7 \cdot 10^4 $ m/s and $ 10 \cdot 10^4 $ m/s were thus produced. Depending on the selected velocity, a $2^3S$ production effciency ranging from $\sim 0.8 \%$ to $\sim 1.7%$, with respect to the total amount of emitted positronium, was obtained. The observed results give a branching ratio for the $3^3P$-$2^3S$ spontaneous decay of $(9.7 \pm 2.7) \% $. The present velocity selection technique could allow to produce an almost monochromatic beam of $\sim 1 \cdot 10^3 $ $2^3S$ atoms with a velocity spread $ < 10^4 $ m/s and an angular divergence of $\sim$ 50 mrad., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Abstract

We report measurements of $\sin{2\beta}$ and $\cos{2\beta}$ from a time-dependent Dalitz plot analysis of $B^{0} \to D^{(*)} h^{0}$ with $D \to K_{S}^{0} \pi^{+} \pi^{-}$ decays, where the light unflavored and neutral hadron $h^{0}$ is a $\pi^{0}$, $\eta$, or $\omega$ meson. The analysis is performed with a combination of the final data sets of the \babar\ and Belle experiments containing $471 \times 10^{6}$ and $772 \times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $\Upsilon\left(4S\right)$ resonance at the asymmetric-energy B factories PEP-II at SLAC and KEKB at KEK, respectively. We measure $\sin{2\beta} = 0.80 \pm 0.14 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 0.06 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.03 \,(\rm{model})$ and $\cos{2\beta} = 0.91 \pm 0.22 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 0.09 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.07 \,(\rm{model})$. The result for the direct measurement of the angle is $\beta = \left( 22.5 \pm 4.4 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 1.2 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.6 \,(\rm{model}) \right)^{\circ}$. The last quoted uncertainties are due to the composition of the $D^{0} \to K_{S}^{0} \pi^{+} \pi^{-}$ decay amplitude model, which is newly established by a Dalitz plot amplitude analysis of a high-statistics $e^{+}e^{-} \to c\bar{c}$ data sample as part of this analysis. We find the first evidence for $\cos2\beta>0$ at the level of $3.7$ standard deviations. The measurement excludes the trigonometric multifold solution $\pi/2 - \beta = (68.1 \pm 0.7)^{\circ}$ at the level of $7.3$ standard deviations and therefore resolves an ambiguity in the determination of the apex of the CKM Unitarity Triangle. The hypothesis of $\beta = 0^{\circ}$ is ruled out at the level of $5.1$ standard deviations, and thus CP violation is observed in $B^{0} \to D^{(*)} h^{0}$ decays., Comment: To be submitted to Physical Review D

Abstract

We present first evidence that the cosine of the CP-violating weak phase $2\beta$ is positive, and hence exclude trigonometric multifold solutions of the CKM Unitarity Triangle using a time-dependent Dalitz plot analysis of $B^{0} \to D^{(*)} h^{0}$ with $D \to K_{S}^{0} \pi^{+} \pi^{-}$ decays, where $h^{0} \in \{\pi^{0}, \eta, \omega \}$ denotes a light unflavored and neutral hadron. The measurement is performed combining the final data sets of the BaBar and Belle experiments collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance at the asymmetric-energy B factories PEP-II at SLAC and KEKB at KEK, respectively. The data samples contain $( 471 \pm 3 )\times 10^6\, B\bar{B}$ pairs recorded by the BaBar detector and $( 772 \pm 11 )\times 10^6\, B\bar{B}$ pairs recorded by the Belle detector. The results of the measurement are $\sin{2\beta} = 0.80 \pm 0.14 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 0.06 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.03 \,(\rm{model})$ and $\cos{2\beta} = 0.91 \pm 0.22 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 0.09 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.07 \,(\rm{model})$. The result for the direct measurement of the angle $\beta$ of the CKM Unitarity Triangle is $\beta = \left( 22.5 \pm 4.4 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 1.2 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.6 \,(\rm{model}) \right)^{\circ}$. The quoted model uncertainties are due to the composition of the $D^{0} \to K_{S}^{0} \pi^{+} \pi^{-}$ decay amplitude model, which is newly established by performing a Dalitz plot amplitude analysis using a high-statistics $e^{+}e^{-} \to c\bar{c}$ data sample. CP violation is observed in $B^{0} \to D^{(*)} h^{0}$ decays at the level of $5.1$ standard deviations. The significance for $\cos{2\beta}>0$ is $3.7$ standard deviations. The trigonometric multifold solution $\pi/2 - \beta = (68.1 \pm 0.7)^{\circ}$ is excluded at the level of $7.3$ standard deviations. Abstract

Producing positronium (Ps) in the metastable $2^3\text{S}$ state is of interest for various applications in fundamental physics. We report here about an experiment in which Ps atoms are produced in this long-lived state by spontaneous radiative decay of Ps excited to the $3^3\text{P}$ level manifold. The Ps cloud excitation is obtained with a UV laser pulse in an experimental vacuum chamber in presence of guiding magnetic field of 25 mT and an average electric field of 300 V/cm. The indication of the $2^3\text{S}$ state production is obtained from a novel analysis technique of single-shot positronium annihilation lifetime spectra. Its production efficiency relative to the total amount of formed Ps is evaluated by fitting a simple rate equations model to the experimental data and found to be $ (2.1 \pm 1.3) \, \% $.

47. Liminal legality and the construction of belonging: aspirations of Eritrean and Ethiopian migrants in Khartoum.

Abstract

In this paper, I analyse forms of belonging and un-belonging created in a situation of permanent liminal legality in one's place of residence. The concept of liminal legality zooms in on spaces of social existence in everyday lives in a context of legal ambiguity. The focus of the paper is Eritrean and Ethiopian migrant communities who resided in the Sudanese capital Khartoum in 2021. The majority had lived in Khartoum for decades, or were even born there, but remain without any hope for full legal status or citizenship in Khartoum. Based on 30 in-depth interviews with Eritrean and Ethiopian migrants, I analyse the complex and ambiguous forms of belonging and un-belonging this liminal legality produces, and how aspirations are created and shaped by it. I argue that in certain aspects of everyday life, liminal legality does not hinder a social existence as quasi-citizens of Khartoum. At the same time, important aspirations are being curtailed by liminal legality. This creates forms of un-belonging that undermine social existence. Wigner and Husimi quasi-distributions, owing to their functional regularity, give the two archetypal and equivalent representations of all observable-parameters in continuous-variable quantum information. Abstract

Cancer peptide vaccination represents a promising therapeutic approach, but has been hampered by lack of suitable antigens and restricted applicability due to different HLA backgrounds of individual patients. We here introduce a novel warehouse-based concept for composition of personalized peptide vaccines and report on its successful application in a Phase II clinical trial in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) after first-line therapy. 26 CLL patients in at least partial remission (PR) after 6 months of immuno-chemotherapy were vaccinated with a personalized vaccine compiled from a premanufactured peptide warehouse comprising immunopeptidome-defined CLL-associated peptides. Primary objective was evaluation of immunogenicity, secondary objectives were safety and minimal residual disease (MRD) response. Immunopeptidome-guided vaccine composition was throughout successful, proving the feasibility of warehouse-based vaccine design. Vaccination was well tolerated, with local injection site reactions being the most common adverse event. Only few patients showed vaccine-induced T cell responses, attributable to their inability to mount strong immune responses due to immune-chemotherapy and lack of potent adjuvant formulations. Both issues are addressed within a follow-up trial (NCT04688385), combining the immunopeptidome-guided warehouse-based vaccine design reported here with a potent novel adjuvant evaluating personalized multi- peptide vaccination in CLL patients under T cell supportive BTK inhibitor therapies.
