We analyze JWST MIRI/MRS observations of the infrared PAH bands in the nuclear and circumnuclear regions of local AGN from the GATOS Survey. In this work, we examine the PAH properties in the circumnuclear regions of AGN and AGN-outflows, and compare them to those in star-forming regions and the innermost regions of AGN. This study employs 4.9-28.1 micron sub-arcsecond angular resolution data to investigate the properties of PAH in three nearby sources (DL~30-40 Mpc). Our findings align with previous JWST studies, showing that the central regions of AGN show a larger fraction of neutral PAH molecules (i.e. elevated 11.3/6.2 and 11.3/7.7 PAH ratios) compared to star-forming galaxies. We find that the AGN might affect not only the PAH population in the innermost region but also in the extended regions up to ~kpc scales. By comparing our observations to PAH diagnostic diagrams, we find that, in general, regions located in the projected direction of the AGN-outflow occupy similar positions on the PAH diagnostic diagrams as those of the innermost regions of AGN. Star-forming regions that are not affected by the AGN in these galaxies share the same part of the diagram as Star-forming galaxies. We examine the potential of the PAH-H2 diagram to disentangle AGN versus star-forming activity. Our results suggest that in Sy-like AGN, illumination and feedback from the AGN might affect the PAH population at nuclear and kpc scales, in particular, the ionization state of the PAH grains. However, PAH sizes are rather similar. The carriers of the ionized PAH bands (6.2 and 7.7 micron) are less resilience than those of neutral PAH bands (11.3 micron), which might be particularly important for strongly AGN-host coupled systems. Therefore, caution must be applied when using PAH bands as star-formation rate indicators in these systems even at kpc scales, with the ionized ones being more affected by the AGN., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 21 pages, 13 Figures

We present observations of the type-2 Seyfert NGC7172 obtained with the medium-resolution spectrometer (MRS) of the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on board of the JWST. This galaxy hosts one of the lowest ionised gas mass outflow rates (Mout~0.005 M/yr) in a sample of six AGN with similar bolometric luminosities (log Lbol~44erg/s) within the Galactic Activity, Torus and Outflow Survey (GATOS). We aim to understand the properties of the ionised gas outflow, mainly using the emission lines from the neon transitions, that cover a broad range of ionisation potentials (IP) from ~20 eV to ~130 eV. We applied parametric and non-parametric methods to characterise the line emission and kinematics. The low excitation lines (IP<25eV, e.g.[NeII]) trace the rotating disc emission. The high excitation lines (IP>90eV, e.g.[NeV]), which are likely photoionised exclusively by the AGN, are expanding in the direction nearly perpendicular to the disc of the galaxy, with maximum projected velocities of ~350-500 km/s. In particular, [NeV] and [NeVI] lines reveal a biconical ionised gas outflow emerging N-S from the nuclear region, extending at least ~2.5"N and 3.8"S (projected distance of ~450 and 680 pc). Most of the emission arising in the northern part of the cone was not previously detected due to obscuration. Given the almost face-on orientation of the outflow and the almost edge-on orientation of the galaxy, NGC7172 may be a case of weak coupling. Nevertheless, we found evidence for positive feedback in two distinct outflowing clumps at projected distances of 3.1" and 4.3" (i.e. ~560 and 780 pc) SW from the AGN. We estimated a star formation rate in these regions using the [NeII] and [NeIII] luminosities of 0.08 M/yr, that is ~10% of that found in the circumnuclear ring. The star formation activity might have been triggered by the interaction between the ionised gas outflow and the ISM of the galaxy., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures. Accepted for publication in A&A. We present new $\lambda_{\rm rest}=77$ $\mu$m dust continuum observations from the ALMA of HZ10 (CRISTAL-22), a dusty main-sequence galaxy at $z$=5.66 as part of the [CII] Resolved Ism in STar-forming Alma Large program, CRISTAL. The high angular resolution of the ALMA Band 7 and new Band 9 data($\sim{0}''.4$) reveals the complex structure of HZ10, which comprises two main components (HZ10-C and HZ10-W) and a bridge-like dusty emission between them (the Bridge). We model the dust spectral energy distribution (SED) to constrain the physical conditions of the interstellar medium (ISM) and its variations among the different components identified in HZ10. We find that HZ10-W (the more UV-obscured component) has an SED dust temperature of $T_{\rm SED}$$\sim$51.2$\pm13.1$ K; this is $\sim$5 K higher (although still consistent) than that of the central component and previous global estimations for HZ10. Our new ALMA data allow us to reduce by a factor of $\sim$2.3 the uncertainties of global $T_{\rm SED}$ measurements compared to previous studies. Interestingly, HZ10-W shows a lower [CII]/FIR ratio compared to the other two components (although still within the uncertainties), suggesting a harder radiation field destroying polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon associated with [CII] emission (e.g., active galactic nuclei or young stellar populations). While HZ10-C appears to follow the tight IRX-$\beta_{\rm UV}$ relation seen in local UV-selected starburst galaxies and high-$z$ star-forming galaxies, we find that both HZ10-W and the Bridge depart from this relation and are well described by dust-screen models with holes in front of a hard UV radiation field. This suggests that the UV emission (likely from young stellar populations) is strongly attenuated in the more dusty components of the HZ10 system.

We present JWST/MIRI MRS spatially resolved $\sim 5-28\,\mu$m observations of the central ~4-8kpc of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy and broad absorption line quasar Mrk231. These are part of the Mid-Infrared Characterization of Nearby Iconic galaxy Centers (MICONIC) program of the MIRI European Consortium guaranteed time observations. No high excitation lines (i.e., [MgV] at 5.61$\mu$m or [NeV] at 14.32$\mu$m) typically associated with the presence of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) are detected in the nuclear region of Mrk231. This is likely due to the intrinsically X-ray weak nature of its quasar. Some intermediate ionization potential lines, for instance, [ArIII] at 8.99$\mu$m and [SIV] at 10.51$\mu$m, are not detected either, even though they are clearly observed in a star-forming region ~920pc south-east of the AGN. Thus, the strong nuclear mid-infrared (mid-IR) continuum is also in part hampering the detection of faint lines in the nuclear region. The nuclear [NeIII]/[NeII]line ratio is consistent with values observed in star-forming galaxies. Moreover, we resolve for the first time the nuclear starburst in the mid-IR low-excitation line emission (size of ~400pc, FWHM). Several pieces of evidence also indicate that it is partly obscured even at these wavelengths. At the AGN position, the ionized and warm molecular gas emission lines have modest widths (W_80~300km/s). There are, however, weak blueshifted wings reaching velocities v_02~-400km/s in [NeII]. The nuclear starburst is at the center of a large (~8kpc), massive rotating disk with widely-spread, low velocity outflows. Given the high star formation rate of Mrk231, we speculate that part of the nuclear outflows and the large-scale non-circular motions observed in the mid-IR are driven by its powerful nuclear starburst., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The ionisation cones of NGC5728 have a deficit of molecular gas based on millimetre observations of CO(2-1) emission. Although photoionisation from the active nucleus may lead to suppression of this transition, warm molecular gas can still be present. We report the detection of eight mid-infrared rotational H$_2$ lines throughout the central kiloparsec, including the ionisation cones, using integral field spectroscopic observations with JWST/MIRI MRS. The H$_2$ line ratios, characteristic of a power-law temperature distribution, indicate that the gas is warmest where it enters the ionisation cone through disk rotation, suggestive of shock excitation. In the nucleus, where the data can be combined with an additional seven ro-vibrational H$_2$ transitions, we find that moderate velocity (30 km s$^{-1}$) shocks in dense ($10^5$ cm$^{-3}$) gas, irradiated by an external UV field ($G_0 = 10^3$), do provide a good match to the full set. The warm molecular gas in the ionisation cone that is traced by the H$_2$ rotational lines has been heated to temperatures $>200$ K. Outside of the ionisation cone the molecular gas kinematics are undisturbed. However, within the ionisation cone, the kinematics are substantially perturbed, indicative of a radial flow, but one that is quantitatively different from the ionised lines. We argue that this outflow is in the plane of the disk, implying a short 50 pc acceleration zone up to speeds of about 400 km s$^{-1}$ followed by an extended deceleration over $\sim$700 pc where it terminates. The deceleration is due to both the radially increasing galaxy mass, and mass-loading as ambient gas in the disk is swept up., Comment: A&A accepted; 16 pages

Disentangling the radio flux contribution from star formation (SF) and active-galactic-nuclei (AGN) activity is a long-standing problem in extragalactic astronomy, since at frequencies of $\lesssim$ 10 GHz, both processes emit synchrotron radiation. We present in this work the general objectives of the PARADIGM Project, a multi-instrument concept to explore star-formation and mass assembly of galaxies. We introduce two novel general approaches for a detailed multiscale study of the radio emission in local U/LIRGs. In this work, we use archival interferometric data from the Very Large Array (VLA) centred at ~ 6 GHz (C band) and present new observations from the e-Multi-Element Radio-Linked Interferometer Network (e-MERLIN) for UGC5101, VV705, VV250 and UGC8696. Using our image decomposition methods, we robustly disentangle the radio emission into distinct components by combining information from the two interferometric arrays. We use e-MERLIN as a probe of the core-compact radio emission (AGN or starburst) at ~ 20 pc scales, and as a probe of nuclear diffuse emission, at scales ~ 100 - 200 pc. With VLA, we characterise the source morphology and the flux density on scales from 200 pc up to and above 1 kpc. As a result, we find deconvolved and convolved sizes for nuclear regions from ~ 10 pc to ~ 200 pc. At larger scales, we find sizes of 1.5 - 2 kpc for diffuse structures (with effective sizes of ~ 300 - 400 pc). We demonstrate that the radio emission from nuclear extended structures (~ 100 pc) can dominate over core-compact components, providing a significant fraction of the total multiscale SF output. We establish a multiscale radio tracer for star formation by combining information from different instruments. How galaxies regulate nuclear growth through gas accretion by supermassive black holes (SMBHs) is one of the most fundamental questions in galaxy evolution. One potential way to regulate nuclear growth is through a galactic wind that removes gas from the nucleus. It is unclear whether galactic winds are powered by jets, mechanical winds, radiation, or via magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) processes. Compact obscured nuclei (CONs) represent a significant phase of galactic nuclear growth. These galaxies hide growing SMBHs or unusual starbursts in their very opaque, extremely compact (r $<$ 100 pc) centres. They are found in approximately 30 % of the luminous and ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG and ULIRG) population. Here, we present high-resolution ALMA observations ($\sim$30 mas, $\sim$5 pc) of ground-state and vibrationally excited HCN towards ESO 320-G030 (IRAS 11506-3851). ESO 320-G030 is an isolated luminous infrared galaxy known to host a compact obscured nucleus and a kiloparsec-scale molecular wind. Our analysis of these high-resolution observations excludes the possibility of a starburst-driven wind, a mechanically or energy driven active galactic nucleus (AGN) wind, and exposes a molecular MDH wind. These results imply that the nuclear evolution of galaxies and the growth of SMBHs are similar to the growth of hot cores or protostars where gravitational collapse of the nuclear torus drives a MHD wind. The ALMA [CII] Resolved Ism in STar-forming gALaxies (CRISTAL) survey is a Cycle 8 ALMA Large Programme that studies the cold gas component of high-redshift galaxies. Its sub-arcsecond resolution observations are key to disentangling physical mechanisms that shape galaxies during cosmic dawn. In this paper, we explore the morphology and kinematics of the cold gas, star-forming, and stellar components in the star-forming main-sequence galaxy CRISTAL-05/HZ3, at z = 5.54. Our analysis includes 0.3" spatial resolution (~2 kpc) ALMA observations of the [CII] line. While CRISTAL-05 was previously classified as a single source, our observations reveal that the system is a close interacting pair surrounded by an extended component of carbon-enriched gas. This is imprinted in the disturbed elongated [CII] morphology and the separation of the two components in the position-velocity diagram (~100 km/s). The central region is composed of two components, named C05-NW and C05-SE, with the former being the dominant one. A significant fraction of the [CII] arises beyond the close pair up to 10 kpc, while the regions forming new massive stars and the stellar component seem compact (r_[CII] ~ 4 r_UV), as traced by rest-frame UV and optical imaging obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope. Our kinematic model, using the DYSMALpy software, yields a minor contribution of dark matter of C05-NW within a radius of ~2x Reff. Finally, we explore the resolved [CII]/FIR ratios as a proxy for shock-heating produced by this merger. We argue that the extended [CII] emission is mainly caused by the merger, which could not be discerned with lower-resolution observations. Nuclear regions of ultraluminous and luminous infrared galaxies (U/LIRGs) are powered by starbursts and/or active galactic nuclei (AGNs). These regions are often obscured by extremely high columns of gas and dust. Molecular lines in the submillimeter windows have the potential to determine the physical conditions of these compact obscured nuclei (CONs). We aim to reveal the distributions of HCN and HCO$^+$ emission in local U/LIRGs and investigate whether and how they are related to galaxy properties. Using ALMA, we have conducted sensitive observations of the HCN J=3--2 and HCO$^+$ J=3--2 lines toward 23 U/LIRGs in the local Universe (z < 0.07) with a spatial resolution of ~0.3" (~50--400 pc). We detected both HCN and HCO$^+$ in 21 galaxies, only HCN in one galaxy, and neither in one galaxy. The global HCN/HCO$^+$ line ratios, averaged over scales of ~0.5--4 kpc, range from 0.4 to 2.3, with an unweighted mean of 1.1. These line ratios appear to have no systematic trend with bolometric AGN luminosity or star formation rate. The line ratio varies with position and velocity within each galaxy, with an average interquartile range of 0.38 on a spaxel-by-spaxel basis. In eight out of ten galaxies known to have outflows and/or inflows, we found spatially and kinematically symmetric structures of high line ratios. These structures appear as a collimated bicone in two galaxies and as a thin spherical shell in six galaxies. Non-LTE analysis suggests that the high HCN/HCO$^+$ line ratio in outflows is predominantly influenced by the abundance ratio. Chemical model calculations indicate that the enhancement of HCN abundance in outflows is likely due to high-temperature chemistry triggered by shock heating. These results imply that the HCN/HCO$^+$ line ratio can aid in identifying the outflow geometry when the shock velocity of the outflows is sufficiently high to heat the gas., Comment: 52 pages, 35 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Massive star-forming galaxies in the high-redshift universe host large reservoirs of cold gas in their circumgalactic medium (CGM). Traditionally, these reservoirs have been linked to diffuse H I Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha)$ emission extending beyond $\approx 10$ kpc scales. In recent years, millimeter/submillimeter observations are starting to identify even colder gas in the CGM through molecular and/or atomic tracers such as the [C II] $158\,\mu$m transition. In this context, we study the well-known J1000+0234 system at $z=4.54$ that hosts a massive dusty star-forming galaxy (DSFG), a UV-bright companion, and a Ly$\alpha$ blob. We combine new ALMA [C II] line observations taken by the CRISTAL survey with data from previous programs targeting the J1000+0234 system, and achieve a deep view into a DSFG and its rich environment at a 0.2" resolution. We identify an elongated [C II]-emitting structure with a projected size of 15 kpc stemming from the bright DSFG at the center of the field, with no clear counterpart at any other wavelength. The plume is oriented $\approx 40^{\circ}$ away from the minor axis of the DSFG, and shows significant spatial variation of its spectral parameters. In particular, the [C II] emission shifts from 180 km/s to 400 km/s between the bottom and top of the plume, relative to the DSFG's systemic velocity. At the same time, the line width starts at 400-600 km/s but narrows down to 190 km/s at top end of the plume. We discuss four possible scenarios to interpret the [C II] plume: a conical outflow, a cold accretion stream, ram pressure stripping, and gravitational interactions. While we cannot strongly rule out any of these with the available data, we disfavor the ram pressure stripping scenario due to the requirement of special hydrodynamic conditions., Comment: 17 pages (14 main text, 2 for references and 1 appendix page), 7 figures and 4 tables. Outflows are believed to be ubiquitous in all AGNs, although their presence in low luminosity AGNs, in particular, for LINERs, has only started to be explored. Their properties (geometry, mass and energetics) are still far from being properly characterised. We use integral field spectroscopic data from the MEGARA instrument, at GTC, to analyse a small sample of nine LINERs, candidates of hosting ionised gas outflows. We aim to study the main emission lines in the optical to identify their properties and physical origin. We obtained data cubes at the lowest (R$\sim$6000) and highest (R$\sim$20000) spectral resolution of MEGARA. We modelled and subtracted the stellar continuum to obtain the ionised gas contribution, and then fitted the emission lines to extract their kinematics (velocity and velocity dispersion). We identified outflows as a secondary component in the emission lines. The primary component of the emission lines was typically associated to gas in the galactic disc. For some objects, there is an enhanced-$\sigma$ region co-spatial with the secondary component. We associated it to turbulent gas produced due to the interaction with the outflows. We find signatures of outflows in six LINERs, with mass outflow rates ranging from 0.004 to 0.4 M$_{sun}$yr$^{-1}$ and energy rates from $\sim$10$^{38}$ to $\sim$10$^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Their mean electronic density is 600cm$^{-3}$, extending to distances of $\sim$400 pc at an (absolute) velocity of $\sim$340 km s$^{-1}$ (on average). They tend to be compact and unresolved, although for some sources they are extended with a bubble-like morphology. Our results confirm the existence of outflows in the best LINER candidates identified using previous long-slit spectroscopic and imaging data. These outflows do not follow the scaling relations obtained for more luminous AGNs. For some objects we discuss jets as the main drivers of the outflows, Comment: 31 pages, 15 figures. This work focuses on the pilot run of a simulation campaign aimed at investigating the spectroscopic capabilities of the Euclid Near-Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer (NISP), in terms of continuum and emission line detection in the context of galaxy evolutionary studies. To this purpose we constructed, emulated, and analysed the spectra of 4992 star-forming galaxies at $0.3 \leq z \leq 2.5$ using the NISP pixel-level simulator. We built the spectral library starting from public multi-wavelength galaxy catalogues, with value-added information on spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting results, and from Bruzual and Charlot (2003) stellar population templates. Rest-frame optical and near-IR nebular emission lines were included using empirical and theoretical relations. We inferred the 3.5$\sigma$ NISP red grism spectroscopic detection limit of the continuum measured in the $H$ band for star-forming galaxies with a median disk half-light radius of \ang{;;0.4} at magnitude $H= 19.5\pm0.2\,$AB$\,$mag for the Euclid Wide Survey and at $H = 20.8\pm0.6\,$AB$\,$mag for the Euclid Deep Survey. We found a very good agreement with the red grism emission line detection limit requirement for the Wide and Deep surveys. We characterised the effect of the galaxy shape on the detection capability of the red grism and highlighted the degradation of the quality of the extracted spectra as the disk size increases. In particular, we found that the extracted emission line signal to noise ratio (SNR) drops by $\sim\,$45$\%$ when the disk size ranges from \ang{;;0.25} to \ang{;;1}. These trends lead to a correlation between the emission line SNR and the stellar mass of the galaxy and we demonstrate the effect in a stacking analysis unveiling emission lines otherwise too faint to detect., Comment: 24 pages, 21 figures

We present results from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Director's Discretionary Time Early Release Science (ERS) program 1328 targeting the nearby, Luminous Infrared Galaxy (LIRG), VV 114. We use the MIRI and NIRSpec instruments to obtain integral-field spectroscopy of the heavily obscured Eastern nucleus (V114E) and surrounding regions. The spatially resolved, high-resolution, spectra reveal the physical conditions in the gas and dust over a projected area of 2-3 kpc that includes the two brightest IR sources, the NE and SW cores. Our observations show for the first time spectroscopic evidence that the SW core hosts an AGN as evidenced by its very low 6.2 {\mu}m and 3.3 {\mu}m PAH equivalent widths (0.12 and 0.017 {\mu}m respectively) and mid and near-IR colors. Our observations of the NE core show signs of deeply embedded star formation including absorption features due to aliphatic hydrocarbons, large quantities of amorphous silicates, as well as HCN due to cool gas along the line of sight. We detect elevated [Fe II]/Pf{\alpha} consistent with extended shocks coincident with enhanced emission from warm H$_{2}$, far from the IR-bright cores and clumps. We present mid-infrared spectroscopic observations of the nucleus of the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 7469 taken with the MIRI instrument on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) as part of Directors Discretionary Time Early Release Science (ERS) program 1328. The high resolution nuclear spectrum contains 19 emission lines covering a wide range of ionization. The high ionization lines show broad, blueshifted emission reaching velocities up to 1700 km s$^{-1}$ and FWHM ranging from $\sim500 - 1100$ km s$^{-1}$. The width of the broad emission and the broad to narrow line flux ratios correlate with ionization potential. The results suggest a decelerating, stratified, AGN driven outflow emerging from the nucleus. The estimated mass outflow rate is one to two orders of magnitude larger than the current black hole accretion rate needed to power the AGN. Eight pure rotational H$_{2}$ emission lines are detected with intrinsic widths ranging from FWHM $\sim 125-330$ km s$^{-1}$. We estimate a total mass of warm H$_{2}$ gas of $\sim1.2\times10^{7}$M$_{\odot}$ in the central 100 pc. The PAH features are extremely weak in the nuclear spectrum, but a $6.2\mu$m PAH feature with an equivalent width $\sim0.07\mu$m and a flux of $2.7\times10^{-17}$ W m$^{-2}$ is detected. The spectrum is steeply rising in the mid-infrared, with a silicate strength $\sim0.02$, significantly smaller than seen in most PG QSOs, but comparable to other Seyfert 1's. These early MIRI mid-infrared IFU data highlight the power of JWST to probe the multi-phase interstellar media surrounding actively accreting supermassive black holes.

We present the analysis of $\sim 100$pc-scale compact radio continuum sources detected in 63 local (Ultra) Luminous Infrared Galaxies (U/LIRGs; $L_{\rm IR} \ge 10^{11} L_\odot$), using FWHM $\lesssim 0''.1 - 0''.2$ resolution 15 and 33 GHz observations with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. We identify a total of 133 compact radio sources with effective radii of 8 - 170pc, which are classified into four main categories -- "AGN" (AGN), "AGN/SBnuc" (AGN-starburst composite nucleus), "SBnuc" (starburst nucleus) and "SF" (star-forming clumps) -- based on ancillary datasets and the literature. We find that "AGN" and "AGN/SBnuc" more frequently occur in late-stage mergers and have up to 3 dex higher 33 GHz luminosities and surface densities compared with "SBnuc" and "SF", which may be attributed to extreme nuclear starburst and/or AGN activity in the former. Star formation rates (SFRs) and surface densities ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$) are measured for "SF" and "SBnuc" using both the total 33 GHz continuum emission (SFR $\sim 0.14 - 13$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, $\Sigma_{\rm SFR} \sim 13 - 1600$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-2}$) and the thermal free-free emission from HII regions (median SFR$_{\rm th} \sim 0.4$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, $\Sigma_{\rm SFR_{th}} \sim 44$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-2}$). These values are 1 - 2 dex higher than those measured for similar-sized clumps in nearby normal (non-U/LIRGs). The latter also have much flatter median 15 - 33 GHz spectral index ($\sim -0.08$) compared with "SBnuc" and "SF" ($\sim -0.46$), which may reflect higher non-thermal contribution from supernovae and/or ISM densities in local U/LIRGs that directly result from and/or lead to their extreme star-forming activities on 100\,pc scales., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Outflows play a central role in galaxy evolution shaping the properties of galaxies. Understanding outflows and their effects in low luminosity AGNs, such as LINERs, is essential (e.g. they are a numerous AGN population in the local Universe). We obtained VLT/MUSE and GTC/MEGARA optical IFS-data for NGC1052, the prototypical LINER. The stars are distributed in a dynamically hot disc, with a centrally peaked velocity dispersion map and large observed velocity amplitudes. The ionised gas, probed by the primary component is detected up to $\sim$30arcsec ($\sim$3.3 kpc) mostly in the polar direction with blue and red velocities ($\mid$V$\mid$$<$250 km/s). The velocity dispersion map shows a notable enhancement ($\sigma$$>$90 km/s) crossing the galaxy along the major axis of rotation in the central 10arcsec. The secondary component has a bipolar morphology, velocity dispersion larger than 150 km/s and velocities up to 660 km/s. A third component is detected but not spatially resolved. The maps of the NaD absorption indicate optically thick neutral gas with a velocity field consistent with a slow rotating disc ($\Delta$V = 77$\pm$12 km/s) but the velocity dispersion map is off-centred without any counterpart in the flux map. We found evidence of an ionised gas outflow with mass of 1.6$\pm$0.6 $\times$ 10$^{5}$ Msun, and mass rate of 0.4$\pm$0.2 Msun/yr. The outflow is propagating in a cocoon of gas with enhanced turbulence and might be triggering the onset of kpc-scale buoyant bubbles (polar emission). Taking into account the energy and kinetic power of the outflow (1.3$\pm$0.9 $\times$ 10$^{53}$ erg and 8.8$\pm$3.5 $\times$ 10$^{40}$ erg/s, respectively) as well as its alignment with both the jet and the cocoon, and that the gas is collisionally ionised, we consider that the outflow is jet-powered, although some contribution from the AGN is possible., Comment: A&A accepted 04/04/2022, 31 pages, 12 figures and 3 appendixes

We use a sample of 706 galaxies, selected as [OII]$\lambda$3727 ([OII]) emitters in the Survey for High-$z$ Absorption Red and Dead Sources (SHARDS) on the CANDELS/GOODS-N field, to study the differential attenuation of the nebular emission with respect to the stellar continuum. The sample includes only galaxies with a counterpart in the infrared and $\mathrm{log}_{10}(M_{*}/\mathrm{M}_{\odot})$ $>$ 9, over the redshift interval 0.3 $\lesssim$ $z$ $\lesssim$ 1.5. Our methodology consists in the comparison of the star formation rates inferred from [OII] and H$\alpha$ emission lines with a robust quantification of the total star-forming activity (${SFR}_{\mathrm{TOT}}$) that is independently estimated based on both infrared and ultraviolet (UV) luminosities. We obtain $f$$=$$E(B-V)_{\mathrm{stellar}}$/$E(B-V)_{\mathrm{nebular}}$ $=$ 0.69$^{0.71}_{0.69}$ and 0.55$^{0.56}_{0.53}$ for [OII] and H$\alpha$, respectively. Our resulting $f$-factors display a significant positive correlation with the UV attenuation and shallower or not-significant trends with the stellar mass, the $SFR_{\mathrm{TOT}}$, the distance to the main sequence, and the redshift. The identification of an emission line is unambiguous when multiple spectral features are clearly visible in the same spectrum. However, in many cases, only one line is detected, making it difficult to correctly determine the redshift. We developed a freely available unsupervised machine-learning algorithm based on unbiased topology (UMLAUT) that can be used in a very wide variety of contexts, including the identification of single emission lines. To this purpose, the algorithm combines different sources of information, such as the apparent magnitude, size and color of the emitting source, and the equivalent width and wavelength of the detected line. In each specific case, the algorithm automatically identifies the most relevant ones (i.e., those able to minimize the dispersion associated with the output parameter). The outputs can be easily integrated into different algorithms, allowing us to combine supervised and unsupervised techniques and increasing the overall accuracy. We tested our software on WISP (WFC3 IR Spectroscopic Parallel) survey data. WISP represents one of the closest existing analogs to the near-IR spectroscopic surveys that are going to be performed by the future Euclid and Roman missions. These missions will investigate the large-scale structure of the universe by surveying a large portion of the extragalactic sky in near-IR slitless spectroscopy, detecting a relevant fraction of single emission lines. In our tests, UMLAUT correctly identifies real lines in 83.2% of the cases. The accuracy is slightly higher (84.4%) when combining our unsupervised approach with a supervised approach we previously developed.

The merger of two or more galaxies can enhance the inflow of material from galactic scales into the close environments of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), obscuring and feeding the supermassive black hole (SMBH). Both recent simulations and observations of AGN in mergers have confirmed that mergers are related to strong nuclear obscuration. However, it is still unclear how AGN obscuration evolves in the last phases of the merger process. We study a sample of 60 Luminous and Ultra-luminous IR galaxies (U/LIRGs) from the GOALS sample observed by NuSTAR. We find that the fraction of AGN that are Compton-thick (CT; $N_{\rm H}\geq 10^{24}\rm\,cm^{-2}$) peaks at $74_{-19}^{+14}\%$ at a late merger stage, prior to coalescence, when the nuclei have projected separations of $d_{\rm sep}\sim 0.4-6$ kpc. A similar peak is also observed in the median $N_{\rm H}$ [$(1.6\pm0.5)\times10^{24}\rm\,cm^{-2}$]. The vast majority ($85^{+7}_{-9}\%$) of the AGN in the final merger stages ($d_{\rm sep}\lesssim 10$ kpc) are heavily obscured ($N_{\rm H}\geq 10^{23}\rm\,cm^{-2}$), and the median $N_{\rm H}$ of the accreting SMBHs in our sample is systematically higher than that of local hard X-ray selected AGN, regardless of the merger stage. This implies that these objects have very obscured nuclear environments, with the $N_{\rm H}\geq 10^{23}\rm\,cm^{-2}$ gas almost completely covering the AGN in late mergers. CT AGN tend to have systematically higher absorption-corrected X-ray luminosities than less obscured sources. This could either be due to an evolutionary effect, with more obscured sources accreting more rapidly because they have more gas available in their surroundings, or to a selection bias. The latter scenario would imply that we are still missing a large fraction of heavily obscured, lower luminosity ($L_{2-10}\lesssim 10^{43}\rm\,erg\,s^{-1}$) AGN in U/LIRGs.

Nuclear rings are excellent laboratories for studying intense star formation. We present results from a study of nuclear star-forming rings in five nearby normal galaxies from the Star Formation in Radio Survey (SFRS) and four local LIRGs from the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey (GOALS) at sub-kpc resolutions using VLA high-frequency radio continuum observations. We find that nuclear ring star formation (NRSF) contributes 49 - 60\% of the total star formation of the LIRGs, compared to 7 - 40\% for the normal galaxies. We characterize a total of 58 individual star-forming regions in these rings, and find that with measured sizes of 10 - 200 pc, NRSF regions in the LIRGs have SFR and $\Sigma_\mathrm{SFR}$ up to 1.7 M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$ and 402 M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$kpc$^{-2}$, respectively, which are about 10 times higher than NRSF regions in the normal galaxies with similar sizes, and comparable to lensed high-$z$ star-forming regions. At $\sim 100 - 300$ pc scales, we estimate low contributions ($< 50\%$) of thermal free-free emission to total radio continuum emission at 33 GHz in the NRSF regions in the LIRGs, but large variations possibly exist at smaller physical scales. Finally, using archival sub-kpc resolution CO (J=1-0) data of nuclear rings in the normal galaxies and NGC 7469 (LIRG), we find a large scatter in gas depletion times at similar molecular gas surface densities, which tentatively points to a multi-modal star formation relation on sub-kpc scales., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Some luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs and ULIRGs) host extremely compact and dusty nuclei. The intense infrared radiation arising from warm dust in these sources is prone to excite vibrational levels of molecules such as HCN. This results in emission from the rotational transitions of vibrationally excited HCN (HCN-vib), with the brightest emission found in compact obscured nuclei (CONs). We aim to establish how common CONs are in the local Universe, and whether their prevalence depends on the luminosity or other properties of the host galaxy. We have conducted an Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) survey of the rotational J=3-2 transition of HCN-vib in a sample of 46 far-infrared luminous galaxies. Compact obscured nuclei are identified in 38 percent of ULIRGs, 21 percent of LIRGs, and 0 percent of lower luminosity galaxies. We find no dependence on the inclination of the host galaxy, but strong evidence of lower IRAS 25 to 60 {\mu}m flux density ratios (f25/f60) in CONs compared to the rest of the sample. Furthermore, we find that CONs have stronger silicate features (s9.7{\mu}m) but similar PAH equivalent widths (EQW6.2{\mu}m) compared to other galaxies. In the local Universe, CONs are primarily found in (U)LIRGs. High resolution continuum observations of the individual nuclei are required to determine if the CON phenomenon is related to the inclinations of the nuclear disks. The lower f25/f60 ratios in CONs as well as the results for the mid-infrared diagnostics investigated are consistent with large dust columns shifting the nuclear radiation to longer wavelengths, making the mid- and far-infrared "photospheres" significantly cooler than the interior regions. We study the accuracy and precision for estimating the fraction of observed levels $\varphi$ in quantum chaotic spectra through long-range correlations. We focus on the main statistics where theoretical formulas for the fraction of missing levels have been derived, the $\Delta_3$ of Dyson and Mehta and the power spectrum of the $\delta_n$ statistic. We use Monte Carlo simulations of the spectra from the diagonalization of Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble matrices with a definite number of levels randomly taken out to fit the formulas and calculate the distribution of the estimators for different sizes of the spectrum and values of $\varphi$. A proper averaging of the power spectrum of the $\delta_n$ statistic needs to be performed for avoiding systematic errors in the estimation. Once the proper averaging is made the estimation of the fraction of observed levels has quite good accuracy for the two methods even for the lowest dimensions we consider $d=100$. However, the precision is generally better for the estimation using the power spectrum of the $\delta_n$ as compared to the estimation using the $\Delta_3$ statistic. This difference is clearly bigger for larger dimensions. Our results show that a careful analysis of the value of the fit in view of the ensemble distribution of the estimations is mandatory for understanding its actual significance and give a realistic error interval., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

Future surveys focusing on understanding the nature of dark energy (e.g., Euclid and WFIRST) will cover large fractions of the extragalactic sky in near-IR slitless spectroscopy. These surveys will detect a large number of galaxies that will have only one emission line in the covered spectral range. In order to maximize the scientific return of these missions, it is imperative that single emission lines are correctly identified. Using a supervised machine-learning approach, we classified a sample of single emission lines extracted from the WFC3 IR Spectroscopic Parallel survey (WISP), one of the closest existing analogs to future slitless surveys. Our automatic software integrates a SED fitting strategy with additional independent sources of information. We calibrated it and tested it on a "gold" sample of securely identified objects with multiple lines detected. The algorithm correctly classifies real emission lines with an accuracy of 82.6%, whereas the accuracy of the SED fitting technique alone is low (~50%) due to the limited amount of photometric data available (<=6 bands). While not specifically designed for the Euclid and WFIRST surveys, the algorithm represents an important precursor of similar algorithms to be used in these future missions.

The differences between the inherent stellar populations (SPs) of LAEs and LBGs are a key factor in understanding early galaxy formation and evolution. We have run a set of SP burst-like models for a sample of 1,558 sources at $3.4

Enhanced emission from the dense gas tracer HCN (relative to HCO$^+ $) has been proposed as a signature of active galactic nuclei (AGN). In a previous single-dish millimeter line survey we identified galaxies with HCN/HCO$ ^+ $ (1-0) intensity ratios consistent with those of many AGN but whose mid-infrared spectral diagnostics are consistent with little to no ( $\lesssim15\% $) contribution of an AGN to the bolometric luminosity. To search for putative heavily obscured AGN, we present and analyze \nustar hard X-ray (3-79 keV) observations of four such galaxies from the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey. We find no X-ray evidence for AGN in three of the systems and place strong upper limits on the energetic contribution of any heavily obscured ($N_{\rm H}>10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$) AGN to their bolometric luminosity. The X-ray flux upper limits are presently an order of magnitude below what XDR-driven chemistry model predict are necessary to drive HCN enhancements. In a fourth system we find a hard X-ray excess consistent with the presence of an AGN, but contributing only $\sim3\%$ of the bolometric luminosity. It is also unclear if the AGN is spatially associated with the HCN enhancement. We further explore the relationship between HCN/HCO$^+$ (for several $\mathrm{J}_\mathrm{upper}$ levels) and $L_\mathrm{AGN}/L_\mathrm{IR}$ for a larger sample of systems in the literature. We find no evidence for correlations between the line ratios and the AGN fraction derived from X-rays, indicating that HCN/HCO$^+$ intensity ratios are not driven by the energetic dominance of AGN, nor are they reliable indicators of whether SMBH accretion is ongoing., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures. accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We study the quantum tunnel effect through a potential barrier employing a semiclassical formulation of quantum mechanics based on expectation values of configuration variables and quantum dispersions as dynamical variables. The evolution of the system is given in terms of a dynamical system for which we are able to determine effective trajectories for individual particles, in a total resemblance of the Bohmian description of quantum mechanics. We obtain a type of semiclassical confinement for particles in a similar way as with the quantum potential, and also determine a semiclassical transmission coefficient for the tunneling process.

Low-Ionisation Nuclear Emission-line Regions (LINERs) are the least luminous and the most numerous among the local population of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). They can be classified as type-1 or type-2 if their optical spectra show or do not show, respectively, a broad component. It is associated with the presence of a Broad Line Region (BLR) in these systems. However, recent studies have proven that the classification of type-1 LINERs may be controversial, since space- and ground-based spectroscopy provide contradicting results on the presence of very broad components (Cazzoli et al. 2018). We have studied the nuclear spectra of 9 type-2 LINERs with intermediate spectral resolution HST/STIS data. We present the results on our analysis of the different spectral components, and discuss the eventual presence of BLR components in type-2 LINER galaxies, together with the possible presence of outflows, both in comparison with type-1 LINERs. We present our analysis of high-resolution (R $\sim$ 20 000) GTC/MEGARA integral-field unit spectroscopic observations, obtained during the commissioning run, in the inner region (12.5 arcsec x 11.3 arcsec) of the active galaxy NGC7469, at spatial scales of 0.62 arcsec. We explore the kinematics, dynamics, ionisation mechanisms and oxygen abundances of the ionised gas, by modelling the H$\alpha$-[NII] emission lines at high signal-to-noise (>15) with multiple Gaussian components. MEGARA observations reveal, for the first time for NGC7469, the presence of a very thin (20 pc) ionised gas disc supported by rotation (V/$\sigma$ = 4.3), embedded in a thicker (222 pc), dynamically hotter (V/$\sigma$ = 1.3) one. These discs nearly co-rotate with similar peak-to-peak velocities (163 vs. 137 km/s ), but with different average velocity dispersion (38 vs. 108 km/s ). The kinematics of both discs could be possibly perturbed by star-forming regions. We interpret the morphology and the kinematics of a third (broader) component ($\sigma$ > 250 km/s) as suggestive of the presence of non-rotational turbulent motions possibly associated either to an outflow or to the lense. For the narrow component, the [NII]/H$\alpha$ ratios point to the star-formation as the dominant mechanism of ionisation, being consistent with ionisation from shocks in the case of the intermediate component. All components have roughly solar metallicity. In the nuclear region of NGC7469, at r < 1.85 arcsec, a very broad (FWHM = 2590 km/s ) H{\alpha} component is contributing (41%) to the global H$\alpha$ -[NII]profile, being originated in the (unresolved) broad line region of the Seyfert 1.5 nucleus of NGC7469., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures, 3 Tables; accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

We report the serendipitous discovery of a bright galaxy (Gal-A) observed as part of the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE). While this galaxy is detected both in line and continuum emission in ALMA Band 7, it is completely dark in UV/optical filters and only presents a marginal detection in the UltraVISTA Ks band. We discuss the nature of the observed ALMA line, i.e. whether the emission comes from [CII] at z~4.6, or from high-J CO transitions at z~2.2. In the first case we find a [CII]-to-FIR luminosity ratio of log(L_[CII]/L_FIR)=-2.5, consistent with the average value for local star-forming galaxies (SFGs); in the second case, instead, the source would lie outside of the empirical relations between L_CO and L_FIR found in the literature. At both redshifts, we derive the star-formation rate (SFR) from the ALMA continuum, and the stellar mass (M*) by using stellar population synthesis models as input for LePHARE spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting. Exploiting our results, we believe that Gal-A is a Main-Sequence (MS), dusty SFG at z=4.6 (i.e. [CII] emitter) with log(SFR/[M/yr])~1.4 and log(M*/M)~9.7. This work underlines the crucial role of the ALPINE survey in making a census of this class of objects, in order to unveil their contribution to the global star-formation rate density (SFRD) of the Universe at the end of the Reionisation epoch., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures. We analyse the spatially resolved relation between stellar mass (M$_{\star}$) and star formation rate (SFR) in disk galaxies (i.e. the Main Sequence, MS). The studied sample includes eight nearby face-on grand-design spirals, e.g. the descendant of high-redshift, rotationally-supported star-forming galaxies. We exploit photometric information over 23 bands, from the UV to the far-IR, from the publicly available DustPedia database to build spatially resolved maps of stellar mass and star formation rates on sub-galactic scales of 0.5-1.5 kpc, by performing a spectral energy distribution fitting procedure that accounts for both the observed and the obscured star formation processes, over a wide range of internal galaxy environments (bulges, spiral arms, outskirts). With more than 30 thousands physical cells, we have derived a definition of the local spatially resolved MS per unit area for disks, $\log(\Sigma_{SFR})$=0.82log$(\Sigma_{*})$-8.69. This is consistent with the bulk of recent results based on optical IFU, using the H$\alpha$ line emission as a SFR tracer. Our work extends the analysis at lower sensitivities in both M$_{\star}$ and SFR surface densities, up to a factor $\sim$ 10. The self consistency of the MS relation over different spatial scales, from sub-galactic to galactic, as well as with a rescaled correlation obtained for high redshift galaxies, clearly proves its universality., Comment: 21 pages, 15 figures. We present the highest resolution --- 15 pc (0.03'') --- ALMA $^{12}$CO(2-1) line emission and 1.3mm continuum maps, tracers of the molecular gas and dust, respectively, in the nearby merging galaxy system NGC 6240, that hosts two supermassive black holes growing simultaneously. These observations provide an excellent spatial match to existing Hubble optical and near-infrared observations of this system. A significant molecular gas mass, $\sim$9$\times$10$^9$M$_\odot$, is located in between the two nuclei, forming a clumpy stream kinematically dominated by turbulence, rather than a smooth rotating disk as previously assumed from lower resolution data. Evidence for rotation is seen in the gas surrounding the southern nucleus, but not in the northern one. Dynamical shells can be seen, likely associated with nuclear supernovae remnants. We further detect the presence of significant high velocity outflows, some of them reaching velocities $>$500 km/s, affecting a significant fraction, $\sim$11\% of the molecular gas in the nuclear region. Inside the spheres of influence of the northern and southern supermassive black holes we find molecular masses of 7.4$\times$10$^8$M$_\odot$ and 3.3$\times$10$^9$M$_\odot$, respectively. We are thus directly imaging the reservoir of gas that can accrete onto each supermassive black hole. These new ALMA maps highlight the critical need for high resolution observations of molecular gas in order to understand the feeding of supermassive black holes and its connection to galaxy evolution in the context of a major galaxy merger., Comment: 27 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication by The Astrophysical Journal

Dwarf galaxies found in isolation in the Local Group (LG) are unlikely to have interacted with the large LG spirals, and therefore environmental effects should not be the main drivers of their evolution. We aim to provide insight into the internal mechanisms shaping LG dwarf galaxies by increasing our knowledge of the internal properties of isolated systems. We focus on the evolved stellar component of the Aquarius dwarf, whose kinematic and metallicity properties have only recently started to be explored. We have obtained spectroscopic data in the the near-infrared CaII triplet lines region with FORS2 at the Very Large Telescope for 53 red giant branch (RGB) stars, to derive line-of-sight velocities and [Fe/H] of the individual RGB stars. We have derived a systemic velocity of $-142.2^{+1.8}_{-1.8}$ km s$^{-1}$, in agreement with previous measurements from both the HI gas and stars. The internal kinematics of Aquarius appears to be best modelled by a combination of random motions (l.o.s. velocity dispersion of $10.3^{+1.6}_{-1.3}$ km s$^{-1}$) and linear rotation (with a gradient $-5.0^{+1.6}_{-1.9}$ km s$^{-1}$ arcmin$^{-1}$) along a P.A.=$139_{-27}^{+17}$ deg, consistent with the optical projected major axis. This rotation signal is significantly misaligned or even counter-rotating to that derived from the HI gas. We also find the tentative presence of a mild negative metallicity gradient and indications that the metal-rich stars have a colder velocity dispersion than the metal-poor ones. This work represents a significant improvement with respect to previous measurements of the RGB stars of Aquarius, as it doubles the number of member stars studied in the literature. We speculate that the misaligned rotation between the HI gas and evolved stellar component might have been the result of recent accretion of HI gas or re-accretion after gas-loss due to internal stellar feedback., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 15 pages, 9 figures

We present $HST$ narrow-band near-infrared imaging of Pa$\alpha$ and Pa$\beta$ emission of 48 local Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs) from the Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS). These data allow us to measure the properties of 810 spatially resolved star-forming regions (59 nuclei and 751 extra-nuclear clumps), and directly compare their properties to those found in both local and high-redshift star-forming galaxies. We find that in LIRGs, the star-forming clumps have radii ranging from $\sim90-900$ pc and star formation rates (SFRs) of $\sim1\times10^{-3}$ to 10 M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$, with median values for extra-nuclear clumps of 170 pc and 0.03 M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$. The detected star-forming clumps are young, with a median stellar age of $8.7$ Myrs, and a median stellar mass of $5\times10^{5}$ M$_\odot$. The SFRs span the range of those found in normal local star-forming galaxies to those found in high-redshift star-forming galaxies at $\rm{z}=1-3$. The luminosity function of the LIRG clumps has a flatter slope than found in lower-luminosity, star-forming galaxies, indicating a relative excess of luminous star-forming clumps. In order to predict the possible range of star-forming histories and gas fractions, we compare the star-forming clumps to those measured in the MassiveFIRE high-resolution cosmological simulation. The star-forming clumps in MassiveFIRE cover the same range of SFRs and sizes found in the local LIRGs and have total gas fractions that extend from 10 to 90%. If local LIRGs are similar to these simulated galaxies, we expect future observations with ALMA will find a large range of gas fractions, and corresponding star formation efficiencies, among the star-forming clumps in LIRGs.

We report the results of an investigation to determine the nature of the offset active galactic nucleus (AGN) found in the source CXO J101527.2+625911. Hubble Space Telescope and Chandra X-ray observatory data had suggested that the offset AGN, which has an angular separation of only 0\farcs26 from the center of the host galaxy, is a recoiled Super Massive Black Hole (rSMBH). We carried out high angular resolution observations with both the VLBA (1.54 GHz) and the VLA (10.0 GHz \& 33.0 GHz) and detected a single compact radio source in the center of the host galaxy, with no radio continuum emission associated with the offset AGN. The detected radio source has a high brightness temperature value of $T_b=7.2\times10^{7}$ K, indicating that the radio emission is associated with an AGN. Furthermore, we present the decomposition of high-resolution KECK spectra of the [O III]5007\AA line into two narrow emission line components, which is a characteristic sign of a dual black hole system. These new radio and optical wavelength results suggest that CXO J101527.2+625911 is the host of a dual black hole system rather than a rSMBH., Comment: ApJ accepted

We present IRAM-30m Telescope $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO observations of a sample of 55 luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs and ULIRGs) in the local universe. This sample is a subset of the Great Observatory All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS), for which we use ancillary multi-wavelength data to better understand their interstellar medium and star formation properties. Fifty-three (96%) of the galaxies are detected in $^{12}$CO, and 29 (52%) are also detected in $^{13}$CO above a 3$\sigma$ level. The median full width at zero intensity (FWZI) velocity of the CO line emission is 661km s$^{-1}$, and $\sim$54% of the galaxies show a multi-peak CO profile. Herschel photometric data is used to construct the far-IR spectral energy distribution of each galaxy, which are fit with a modified blackbody model that allows us to derive dust temperatures and masses, and infrared luminosities. We make the assumption that the gas-to-dust mass ratio of (U)LIRGs is comparable to local spiral galaxies with a similar stellar mass (i.e., gas/dust of mergers is comparable to their progenitors) to derive a CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor of $\langle\alpha\rangle=1.8^{+1.3}_{-0.8}M_\odot$(K km s$^{-1}$pc$^{2}$)$^{-1}$; such a value is comparable to that derived for (U)LIRGs based on dynamical mass arguments. We derive gas depletion times of $400-600$Myr for the (U)LIRGs, compared to the 1.3Gyr for local spiral galaxies. Finally, we re-examine the relationship between the $^{12}$CO/$^{13}$CO ratio and dust temperature, confirming a transition to elevated ratios in warmer systems., Comment: 32 pages, 10 figures.
