La estalagmita Tortero 22-2 creció entre ~70000 y 55000 años BP (Pleistoceno superior) y procede de la Cueva del Tortero, situada en el municipio de Tous (Valencia), al este de la Península Ibérica. La localización de la cueva presenta una alta relevancia para entender la dinámica de los cambios climáticos del pasado y, en consecuencia, del cambio climático actual, dada su posición en el margen occidental del mar Mediterráneo y la influencia que recibe tanto del Atlántico Norte como del cinturón anticiclónico subtropical. En el presente Trabajo Fin de Máster se aborda el estudio de la estalagmita Tortero 22-2 desde una perspectiva paleoclimática. Se realiza la caracterización de la microestratigrafía a partir de la identificación de patrones de crecimiento, unidades morfoestratigráficas y discontinuidades, el análisis químico de la serie microestratigráfica a partir de la composición de isótopos estables de oxígeno y carbono en la calcita, la construcción de series temporales a partir del análisis arquitectural de la microestratigrafía de la estalagmita y de las variaciones isotópicas a lo largo del eje de crecimiento, y la interpretación y comparación de los registros obtenidos. Todo esto con el objetivo de definir las oscilaciones climáticas durante el MIS-4 (Pleistoceno superior) en el complejo kárstico de la Cueva del Tortero. El análisis microestratigráfico y de las series isotópicas de oxígeno y carbono permite identificar intervalos con características genéticas similares. Al integrar la información obtenida de los distintos registros, se pueden describir tres fases de crecimiento con condiciones ambientales diferentes: Fase I (70,4 y 69,3 ka BP) caracterizada por un enfriamiento en el que la precipitación era relativamente elevada y las condiciones para el desarrollo de la vegetación eran desfavorables; Fase II (69,3 y 59,7 ka BP), periodo de estabilidad térmica en condiciones frías con variabilidad en las precipitaciones y condiciones más bien desfavorables

Alterations derived from lymphedema in the upper-limb secondary to breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) decrease the health-related quality of life (HRQoL), but there is limited evidence of the impact of the different interventions on it. The aim of this research was to compare the effect of conventional treatment with another treatment based on Activity-Oriented Antiedema Proprioceptive Therapy (TAPA) on HRQoL in women diagnosed with BCRL., This research was funded by the Call for research and innovation projects in the field of primary care, regional hospitals and high-resolution hospital centres of the Public Health System of Andalusia in 2021 by the Progreso y Salud Foundation, of the Ministry of Health and Families of the Junta de Andalucía, with EXP. Current clinical guidelines support the concomitant administration of seasonal influenza vaccines and COVID-19 mRNA boosters vaccine. Whether dual vaccination may impact vaccine immunogenicity due to an interference between influenza or SARS-CoV-2 antigens is unknown. We aimed to understand the impact of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines administered concomitantly on the immune response to influenza vaccines. For this, 128 volunteers were vaccinated during the 22-23 influenza season. Three groups of vaccination were assembled: FLU vaccine only (46, 35%) versus volunteers that received the mRNA bivalent COVID-19 vaccines concomitantly to seasonal influenza vaccines, FluCOVID vaccine in the same arm (42, 33%) or different arm (40, 31%), respectively. Sera and whole blood were obtained the day of vaccination, +7, and +28 days after for antibody and T cells response quantification. As expected, side effects were increased in individuals who received the FluCOVID vaccine as compared to FLU vaccine only based on the known reactogenicity of mRNA vaccines. In general, antibody levels were high at 4 weeks post-vaccination and differences were found only for the H3N2 virus when administered in different arms compared to the other groups at day 28 post-vaccination. Additionally, our data showed that subjects that received the FluCOVID vaccine in different arm tended to have better antibody induction than those receiving FLU vaccines for H3N2 virus in the absence of pre-existing immunity. Furthermore, no notable differences in the influenza-specific cellular immune response were found for any of the vaccination groups. Our data supports the concomitant administration of seasonal influenza and mRNA COVID-19 vaccines.

Objective The study aimed to reach a consensus on the most relevant patient-reported outcomes (PROs), the corresponding measures (PROMs), and measurement frequency during severe asthma patient follow-up. Methods Two Delphi rounds were conducted. The questionnaire was developed based on a systematic literature review, a focus group with patients, and a nominal group with experts. It assessed PROs’ relevance and the appropriateness (A) and feasibility (F) of PROMs using a Likert scale (1=totally agree; 9=totally disagree). The consensus was established when ≥75% of participants agreed (1-3) or disagreed (7-9). Results Sixty-three professionals (25 hospital pharmacists, 14 allergists, 13 pulmonologists, and 11 nurses) and 5 patients answered the Delphi questionnaire. A consensus was reached on all PROs regarding their relevance. Experts agreed on the use of ACT (A:95.24%; F:95.24%), mini AQLQ (A:93.65; F:79.37%), mMRC dyspnea scale (A:85.71%; F:85.71%), TAI (A:92.06%; F:85.71%), MMAS (A:75.40%; F:82%), and the dispensing register (A:96.83%; F:92.06%). Also considered suitable were: SNOT-22 (A:90.48%; F:73.80%), PSQI (A:82.54; F:63.90%), HADS (A:82.54; F:64%), WPAI (A:77.78%; F:49.20%), TSQM-9 (A:79.37; F:70.50%) and knowledge of asthma questionnaire (A:77%; F:68.80%); however, their use in clinical practice was considered unfeasible. Panelists also agreed on the appropriateness of EQ-5D, which was finally included despite being considered unfeasible (A: 84.13%; F:67.20%) in clinical practice. Agreement was reached on using ACT, TAI, mMRC, and a dispensing register every three months; mini-AQLQ and MMAS every six months; and EQ-5D every twelve months. Conclusion This consensus paves the way toward patient-centered care, promoting the development of strategies supporting routine assessment of PROs in severe asthma management.

The Cenozoic basin of the tectonically-active Bahariya region (Western Desert, Egypt) contains a unique paleoenvironmental, paleotectonic and paleoclimatic record displaying a large variety of sedimentary facies, stratigraphic discontinuities, and geochemical changes. This study deals with the sedimentary evolution and tectono-stratigraphic modelling of shallow marine Upper Eocene glaucony facies (Upper Hamra Formation) that changes upward into a sequence of Oligocene continental fluviatile sandstone-calcrete (Radwan Formation) and then into Miocene lacustrine-palustrine deposits (Continental Carbonate Unit). The tectonic instability of the Bahariya basin can be deduced from occurrence of sedimentary discontinuities, development of pedogenic features, and unconformable relations among rock units. Both sedimentation pattern and facies distribution seem to have been controlled by fault activity through time. Two types of glaucony facies (pelloidal and massive smectitic glaucony) were deposited in a narrow sub-basin along main faults reaching the basin center. These faults also conditioned the deposition of the Oligocene fluviatile sandstone and Miocene lacustrine-palustrine carbonates. A transition from greenhouse (global warming event of the Middle Eocene Climatic Optimum) to icehouse climatic conditions (Eocene-Oligocene climatic cooling) is probably represented by the deposition of the shallow marine glaucony facies during the Priabonian. Semi-arid to sub-humid conditions were dominant during the formation of the Oligocene calcretes and the Miocene lacustrine-palustrine carbonates. The latter carbonate deposits consist of basal thin-bedded chert deposits displaying hydro-plastic sedimentary structures that are possibly coeval with the Miocene basaltic extrusions along faulted and low-lying areas. El método de U/Th permite datar materiales diversos de hasta 600.000 años de antigüedad. En este trabajo se revisan sus fundamentos y las técnicas analíticas disponibles, centrándose en su aplicación más habitual, que es la datación de carbonatos. En concreto, se discuten su potencial y limitaciones en la datación de espeleotemas, travertinos, calcretas, cementos, corales y moluscos aprovechando los ejemplos publicados en España. El cálculo de edades mediante U/Th se basa en la serie de desintegración del 238U e involucra medidas de 238U, 234U y 230Th. Su fundamento radica en el fraccionamiento entre los radionucleidos del uranio y del torio en los sistemas naturales. En el caso de la precipitación de carbonato puro, éste incorpora uranio en el momento de su formación, pero está libre de torio inicial de tal forma que, pasado un tiempo, todo el 230Th medido en la muestra deriva de la desintegración del 234U y esta relación permite calcular la edad de formación del mineral. Teóricamente, por tanto, el carbonato a datar: (1) debe incorporar cierta cantidad de uranio en el momento de su formación, (2) no debe incorporar cantidad significativa de torio y (3) debe comportarse como un sistema cerrado. De estas premisas, la segunda y la tercera no siempre se cumplen por lo que el método se ha adaptado a estos casos añadiendo cálculos y correcciones adicionales. Dada la variedad de carbonatos susceptibles de ser datados, este método es de amplia aplicación en paleoclimatología, paleontología, arqueología, estratigrafía, geomorfología, tectónica y oceanografía, entre otras disciplinas., The U/Th method allows age-dating of various materials up to 600,000 years old. In this work, its fundamentals and the available analytical techniques are reviewed with the focus on its most common application, which is the dating of carbonates. Its potential and limitations in dating speleothems, travertines, tuffs,calcretes, corals and molluscs are discussed reviewing for this purpose some published examples from Spain. The U/Th age calculation is based on the 238U decay series and involves measurements of 238U, 234U, and 230Th. Its foundation lies on the fractionation among uranium and thorium radionuclides in natural systems. In the case of precipitation of pure carbonates, an amount of uranium is incorporated at the time of formation while the mineral remains free of initial thorium in such a way that, after a period of time, all the 230Th measured in the sample derives from the disintegration of 234U and this relationship allows calculating the age of formation of the mineral. Therefore, ideally, the carbonate to be dated: (1) must incorporate a certain amount of uranium at the time of its formation, (2) must not incorporate a significant amount of thorium, and (3) must behave as a closed system. Of these premises, the second and third are not always fulfilled and the method has been adapted to those cases by adding further calculations and corrections. Fluids trapped in speleothems have an enormous potential in frontier fields of paleoclimate and paleohydrological research. This potential is, however, hampered by diverse scientific and technical limitations, among which the lack of a systematic methodology for genetically characterizing fluid inclusions is a major one, as these can have different origins, and thus, the trapped fluid (usually water), different meanings. In this work, we propose a systematic petrological classification of fluid inclusions, based on: 1) the temporal relation between fluid inclusions and the host calcite, 2) the spatial relation between fluid inclusions and the “crystallites” and crystals aggregates, and 3) the phases (water, air) trapped inside fluid inclusions. The first criterion allows dividing fluid inclusions in two main categories: primary and secondary, whose identification is critical in any research based on trapped fluids. The other two criteria allow the definition of eight types of primary and four types of secondary fluid inclusions. Primary fluid inclusions contain the drip water that fed stalagmites at the time of crystal growth, and can be intercrystalline, i.e., located between adjacent crystallites, or intracrystalline, i.e., with the fluid trapped within crystallites. We differentiate six main types among the intercrystalline fluid inclusions (elongate, thorn-shaped, down-arrow, interbranch, macro-elongate, and bucket) and other two among intracrystalline inclusions (pyriform and boudin). In primary inclusions, water is the main phase, while gas is much less abundant. The presence of gas could be related to slow drip rates or degassing in the cave, but also to later leakage due to changes in temperature and humidity often occurring during inadequate handling of speleothem samples. Secondary fluid inclusions were clearly related to younger water inlet through stratigraphic disruptions or unconformities. [SPA] Bolivia llegó a ser uno de los principales productores de plata del mundo; su producción llegó a ser muy importante a mediados del siglo XVI cuando el proceso de amalgamación permitió la producción masiva de plata, dejando una cantidad sin precedentes de mercurio, con la consiguiente repercusión medioambiental, económica y social en varias zonas de Bolivia. En los últimos años, en Bolivia se ha visto un importante aumento de las operaciones mineras auríferas, motivado por el incremento del precio y la demanda internacional del oro. La minería aurífera boliviana tiene como principales protagonistas a las cooperativas mineras, que producen el 97 % del oro a nivel nacional, generando la mayor cantidad de empleo en el sector. El departamento de La Paz es el mayor productor de oro a nivel nacional, donde opera el 57% del total de cooperativas del país, explotando yacimientos auríferos primarios y secundarios. En el proceso de extracción de oro en Bolivia, el uso del mercurio es la práctica más habitual; la cantidad y su forma de uso, varía fundamentalmente por el tipo de yacimiento. Varias de las áreas protegidas nacionales, subnacionales e incluso territorios indígenas y originarios, que albergan una parte significativa de la biodiversidad del país, y son proveedoras de funciones ambientales vitales para el desarrollo, tienen dentro de su territorio actividades de extracción minera. El Área Natural de Manejo Integrado Nacional (ANMIN) -Apolobamba, que se encuentra en el departamento de La Paz, es una de las áreas protegidas más afectadas por las actividades mineras auríferas a pequeña escala. El objetivo principal de la tesis fue determinar los impactos ambientales de la minería aurífera filoniana a pequeña escala sobre medios bióticos (vegetación nativa) y abióticos (suelos, sedimentos y residuos) en ANMIN-Apolobamba. No existen sistemas libres de errores, por lo que el objetivo fundamental de la seguridad clínica consiste en minimizar los riesgos y posibilidades de error, facilitando que los procesos se realicen correctamente. La seguridad del paciente es una prioridad para las autoridades sanitarias. En España, durante estos últimos anos se han desarrollado iniciativas para mejorar la seguridad del paciente, tanto por el Ministerio de Sanidad, Servicios Sociales e Igualdad, como por las Comunidades Autónomas, las sociedades científicas y distintos organismos e instituciones. En los hospitales se han realizado distintos tipos de actuaciones e implantado Practicas Seguras de Medicación, aunque, al igual que sucede en EE.UU y otros países, su grado de implantación es todavía bajo. El Plan de Calidad del Sistema Nacional de Salud y de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) recoge, entre sus recomendaciones para mejorar la seguridad del paciente, la creación de Grupos de Trabajo multidisciplinares dentro de cada especialidad. Los grupos de trabajo en seguridad son equipos multidisciplinares que se reúnen periódicamente para analizar, con un enfoque sistemático, los incidentes de seguridad que han ocurrido en una unidad clínica o servicio con el objetivo de establecer las medidas de prevención pertinentes. En estos grupos, la implicación activa del farmacéutico es necesaria para la mejora de la seguridad de todos los procesos del sistema de utilización de los medicamentos. Y así, por ejemplo, los beneficios de la intervención farmacéutica se han constatado en distintos estudios, obteniéndose una tasa de aceptación del prescriptor en relación a las recomendaciones del farmacéutico que oscila entre un 39,0 y un 91,6%..., "Introduction" Medication errors (ME) are the most common cause of adverse events (AE), which can lead to patient injury and even death, as well as involve significant health costs. No errorfree systems exist, and therefore the fundamental objective of clinical safety is to minimise risks and potential errors, thereby making it easier for processes to be conducted correctly. Patient safety is a priority for health authorities. In Spain, initiatives to improve patient safety have recently been developed by the Ministry of Health, Social Services, and Equality and by Autonomous Communities, scientific societies, and other organizations and institutions. Different types of actions and Safe Medication Practices have been implemented in hospitals. Nevertheless, the degree of implementation is still low, which is similar to the situation in the USA and other countries. The Quality Plans of the Spanish National Health System and the World Health Organization (WHO) include the creation of multidisciplinary Working Groups within each specialty among their recommendations to improve patient safety.Safety working groups are multidisciplinary teams that meet periodically to systematically analyse safety incidents in clinical units or services in order to establish relevant prevention measures. The active involvement of pharmacists in these groups is needed to improve the safety of all the processes in the medication use system. For example, the benefits of pharmaceutical intervention have been described in different studies, which have found that pharmacists' recommendations achieved an acceptance rate of 39.0% to 91.6% among prescribers...

Constructed wetlands (CWs) can remove a high amount of pollutants from wastewater, and therefore play an important role in water purification. In this study, a pilot system to improve the traditional treatment of industrial wastewater from the tannery industry was tested. The main objective of this research was to remove nitrogen, phosphorus, boron, and chromium from a tannery’s industrial wastewater using a horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland (HSSFCW) formed from three cells, planted with Phragmites australis and operated in batch mode as an ecofriendly system. P. australis was selected due to its ability to adapt to climatic conditions, its wetland and management characteristics, and its high capacity for pollutant absorption. The concentrations of total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), total phosphorus (TP), boron (B), and chromium (Cr) were analyzed in both wastewater and purified water, and the removal efficiencies were calculated. In addition, both the absorption capacity of P. australis in the aerial and root parts and the adsorption capacity of substrates (gravel and washed sand) were analyzed. Results showed that the concentrations of TP and Cr decreased in the wastewater at both hydraulic retention times (HRTs) tested (3 and 7 days), with 3 days being the most effective, showing removal efficiency values of 78% and 48% for TP and Cr, respectively. However, concentrations of TKN and B were not statistically reduced at either HRTs. Regarding the absorption capacity of P. australis, the highest absorption efficiencies for TKN and TP were reported at 7 days in the aerial part of the plants. In contrast, B was retained in roots at HRT of 3 days. Finally, Cr was more significantly absorbed at 3 days by P. australis. Moreover, the substrates also played important roles in the adsorption of nitrogen and boron. Therefore, CWs planted with P. australis could be used as an ecofriendly technique to the reduce pollution load of the wastewater from tannery industry

Con el lema “Geología para todos” el proyecto Geodivulgar: Geología y Sociedad apuesta por la divulgación de la Geología a todo tipo de público, incidiendo en la importancia de realizar simultáneamente una acción de integración social entre estudiantes y profesores de centros universitarios, de enseñanza infantil, primaria, de educación especial y un acercamiento con público con diversidad funcional.

La Cueva de Los Llanos está enmarcada dentro de la Sierra de Pela, al norte de la provincia de Guadalajara y desarrollada en la Fm. Calizas dolomíticas de la Tranquera. La cueva se estudia con el propósito de entender las condiciones de desarrollo y preservación de los espeleotemas, a través de la caracterización de la cavidad durante los meses de enero-marzo de 2020. En este trabajo de investigación se presenta la descripción de la cueva, sus características espaciales y contextuales y los resultados obtenidos de los distintos análisis que se han llevado a cabo. Entre estos se incluye la monitorización de los parámetros ambientales de temperatura, humedad relativa y contenido en CO2 en la cavidad y su entorno, los análisis de las muestras de aire y agua y el estudio petrográfico de los espeleotemas. En la actualidad, la cueva y su ornamentación están sometidas a condiciones que son esencialmente las atmosféricas, con variaciones significativas en los parámetros climáticos de temperatura, humedad relativa (porcentajes lejos de su estado de saturación) y contenido en CO2 (valores ligeramente mayores a los del entorno). Dentro de la cavidad existe una marcada diferencias de ambientes entres los cuadrantes exteriores (I y II) y los interiores (III y IV), con mayores temperaturas y menores valores de humedad relativa y contenido en CO2 en los cuadrantes exteriores, relacionados con un peor aislamiento y una alta ventilación en estos lugares. Los resultados obtenidos de las muestras de agua indican una procedencia del CO2 por mezcla de aires en los cuadrantes exteriores y por actividad biótica en los interiores. En lo que concierne a las muestras de agua recogidas de los goteos, estas son de tipo bicarbonatadas cálcicas y subsaturadas en carbonatos (IS < 0), no existiendo entonces precipitación mineral reciente en los espeleotemas. Mining activity in Cartagena-La Union mining district (SE Spain) dates back more than 2500 years. Consequently, large amounts of sterile materials with large metal(loid) contents (mostly Zn and Pb) have accumulated in tailings ponds. A reclamation strategy based on aided phytostabilization was carried out to reclaim one tailings pond to reduce environmental and public health hazards. The main goal of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the aided phytostabilization strategy after 30 months from its implementation in enhancing soil quality and fertility and reducing mobility of the metals. Marble waste, raw pig slurry and its solid phase after physical separation were applied as amendments, and 13 Mediterranean native plant species were planted or sown. Various soil physicochemical and biochemical properties, together with the pseudo-total and bioavailable fraction of the metal(loid)s, As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn, were monitored for 30 months. Results showed that pH, total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), cation exchange capacity (CEC), available phosphorus (P), exchangeable potassium (K), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), basal soil respiration (BSR) and enzyme activities increased with the application of the amendments and development of vegetation. In addition, the available fraction of metals markedly decreased (90–99%). Most plant species present in the area did not transfer large amounts of trace elements to the aerial tissues. The roots of Lygeum spartum loefl. Ex L. and Piptatherum miliaceum (L.) Coss. accumulated the largest amounts of As, Pb and Zn. Thus, the application of marble waste to increase pH and immobilize metal(loid)s, and pig slurry as a source of organic matter and nutrients, together with the development of vegetation to immobilize metal(loid)s in the roots and rhizosphere, and the effect of microbial communities on organic matter stabilization and development, have contributed to improve soil quality and fertility.
