6. Institutional Agents' Perspectives of Institutional Support for Undocumented and DACA Community College Students

Abstract

Given that community colleges enroll most of the undocumented and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) students across the nation, there is an economic and moral imperative to understand how the sociopolitical environment has shifted educational opportunities for undocumented and DACA students. This paper unveils how institutional agents use their agency to shape the college community college experiences of undocumented and DACA students. Findings include institutional agents' perspectives on navigating challenges, resistance, and virtues in the current sociopolitical climate. Recommendations are discussed to enhance humanizing and holistic institutional support for DACA and undocumented college students, as well as a proposed undocuservingness framework.

Abstract

This book examines how racist political rhetoric has created damaging and dangerous conditions for Students of Color in schools and higher education institutions throughout the United States. The authors show how the election of the 45th president has resulted in a defining moment in U.S. history where racist discourses, reinforced by ideologies of white supremacy, have affected the educational experiences of our most vulnerable students. This volume situates the rhetoric of the Trump presidency within a broader historical narrative and provides recommendations for those who seek to advocate for anti-racism and social justice. As we enter the uncharted waters of a global pandemic and national racial reckoning, this will be invaluable reading for scholars, educators, and administrators who want to be part of the solution. Abstract

The SWI/SNF complex is a chromatin remodeling complex comprised by several proteins such as SMARCA4 or SMARCB1. Mutations in its components can lead to the development of aggressive rhabdoid tumors such as epithelioid sarcoma, malignant rhabdoid tumor or small cell carcinoma of the ovary hypercalcemic type, among others. These malignancies tend to affect young patients and their prognosis is poor given the lack of effective treatments. Characteristically, these tumors are highly infiltrated by TILs, suggesting that some lymphocytes are recognizing tumor antigens. The use of those TILs as a therapeutic strategy is a promising approach worth exploring. Here, we report the clinical protocol of the TILTS study, a Phase II clinical trial assessing personalized adoptive cell therapy with TILs in patients affected by these tumor types. These tumors usually have rhabdoid features and tend to affect young patients. Patients affected by these malignancies have poor prognosis since there are no effective standard treatments. Tumors associated with alterations in the SWI/SNF complex are generally infiltrated by a high number of TILs that have been able to recognize a tumor antigen. The use of those TILs as a therapeutic strategy is a promising immunotherapy approach. The TILTS study The TILTS study is a clinical trial designed to assess the activity of adoptive cell therapy with TILs in these tumor types. The TILTS study is a prospective, single-arm, multicenter Phase II study that uses personalized TILs treatment in advanced tumors associated with alterations in the SWI/SNF complex. The primary end point is ORR per RECIST v1.1 as assessed by investigator. Secondary end points include toxicity evaluation, PFS and OS, among others. 27. How Whiteness Operates at a Hispanic Serving Institution: A Qualitative Case Study of Faculty, Staff, and Administrators.

Abstract

Approximately two-thirds of Latinx college students attend Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs). Despite the growing number of HSIs, these institutions often fail to result in better educational outcomes and success for Latinx students. As such, more research is needed to explore factors that may hinder HSIs in their ability to support Latinx students. Whiteness—defined as the invasive system of White supremacy that permeates society—is systemically embedded throughout higher educational systems. However, little research has explored the specific ways that whiteness may influence the construction and maintenance of HSIs by senior administrators, staff, and faculty. To address this gap, the present study centered theories from critical whiteness studies (Nayak, 2007) and Garcia's (2018) decolonizing HSIs organizational framework to assess how whiteness operates at a recently designated HSI. We used a critical qualitative case study design that included thematic analysis of 14 student affairs staff, faculty, and senior administrator interviews and document analysis of public-facing institutional materials. Results indicated three predominant themes related to how whiteness is maintained by senior administrators, staff, and faculty, including the rhetoric of all as a tool of White appeasement, the taxation of bodies of people of color, and whiteness through good intentions. The study concludes with recommendations for identifying and disrupting whiteness at HSIs, including specific recommendations at the individual and institutional levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

36. Interrogating Racist Nativist Microaggressions and Campus Climate: How Undocumented and DACA College Students Experience Institutional Legal Violence in Colorado

Abstract

In 2013, the state of Colorado passed the ASSET (Advancing Students for a Stronger Economy Tomorrow) bill, which allowed eligible undocumented/DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) students residing in Colorado the ability to qualify for in-state tuition at public institutions. Using qualitative methods, we examine how undocumented/DACA students experience their campus climate at 2 institutions in Colorado. This article highlights the voices of 12 undocumented/DACA students. We utilize the concept of legal violence and campus climate to illuminate 3 forms of racist nativist microaggressions (a) institutional ignorance; (b) the reproduction of pervasive invisibility; and (c) hidden/nonpresent communities of support as ways in which colleges and universities reproduce injurious acts. Recommendations and implications are provided.

38. Unpacking Resilience and Trauma: Examining the 'Trump Effect' in Higher Education for Undocumented Latinx College Students

Abstract

In response to the "Trump Effect", or the negative climate in education following President Trump's election, we examine the ways in which anti-immigration rhetoric from the recent election cycle and the elimination of DACA has influenced college experiences and trajectories of undocumented Latinx students. Using critical race theory, along with literature on trauma and resilience, we based our findings on three focus groups with 16 undocumented student participants, and highlight four emergent themes: (1) citizen fragility seemed pervasive and finding hope was deemed as challenging; (2) students experienced an increase of emboldened racist nativism on their college campuses; (3) the exploitation of undocumented student labor; and (4) shared solidarity was beneficial for student resilience. Findings illuminate how colleges and universities need to reconceptualize the notion of resilience by addressing systemic racist nativism in higher education.

39. Unpacking Legality through 'La Facultad' and Cultural Citizenship: Critical and Legal Consciousness Formation for Politicized Latinx Undocumented Youth Activists

Abstract

Over the last ten years, there has been an increasingly growing body of scholarship devoted to undocumented college students in higher education. Prior scholarship has focused on how undocumented students negotiate their political and civic identity within the undocumented youth movement. However, immigration research within higher education has not addressed how undocumented students come to understand their legal consciousness. I intersect legal consciousness with Anzaldúa's (1987) "la facultad/nepantla" and cultural citizenship theory (Rosaldo, 1987) to frame the process of how politicized Latinx undocumented students come to hone their critical legal consciousness within the context of higher education and social activism. Using data from 39 individual interviews with 13 undocumented student activists who self-identified as "undocumented and unafraid," the findings reveal four forms of navigation for how undocumented students come to understand their legal consciousness as they negotiate colonized spaces: (a) reconfiguring legality though migration and family experiences; (b) negotiating contexts and disclosure; (c) critical enactment of cultural citizenship; and (d) disrupting and reclaiming colonized spaces.
