Abstract

The integration of predictive maintenance and cybersecurity represents a transformative advancement for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operating within the Industry 4.0 paradigm. Despite their economic importance, SMEs often face significant challenges in adopting advanced technologies due to resource constraints and knowledge gaps. The DETECTA 2.0 project addresses these hurdles by developing an innovative system that harmonizes real-time anomaly detection, sophisticated analytics, and predictive forecasting capabilities. The system employs a semi-supervised methodology, combining unsupervised anomaly detection with supervised learning techniques. This approach enables more agile and cost-effective development of AI detection systems, significantly reducing the time required for manual case review. At the core lies a Digital Twin interface, providing intuitive real-time visualizations of machine states and detected anomalies. Leveraging cutting-edge AI engines, the system intelligently categorizes anomalies based on observed patterns, differentiating between technical errors and potential cybersecurity incidents. This discernment is fortified by detailed analytics, including certainty levels that enhance alert reliability and minimize false positives. The predictive engine uses advanced time series algorithms like N-HiTS to forecast future machine utilization trends. This proactive approach optimizes maintenance planning, enhances cybersecurity measures, and minimizes unplanned downtimes despite variable production processes. With its modular architecture enabling seamless integration across industrial setups and low implementation costs, DETECTA 2.0 presents an attractive solution for SMEs to strengthen their predictive maintenance and cybersecurity strategies.

4. Hyperbolic Bloch points in ferrimagnetic exchange spring

Abstract

Bloch points in magnetic materials are attractive entities in view of magnetic information transport. Here, Bloch point configuration has been investigated and experimentally determined in a magnetic trilayer ($Gd_{12}Co_{88}/Nd_{17}Co_{83}/Gd_{24}Co_{76}$) with carefully adjusted composition within the ferrimagnetic $Gd_{x}Co_{1-x}$ alloys in order to engineer saturation magnetization, exchange length, and interlayer couplings (ferromagnetic vs antiferromagnetic). X-ray vector magnetic tomography has allowed us to determine experimentally Bloch point polarity (related to topological charge) and Bloch point helicity ${\gamma}$ (determined by magnetostatic energy). At the bottom layer (close to the ferromagnetic interface), Bloch points adopt a standard circulating configuration with helicity ${\gamma}$ close to ${\pi}/2$. Within the top layer (with much lower saturation magnetization), Bloch points nucleate within a Neel-like exchange spring domain wall created by the antiferromagnetic coupling and adopt an uncommon hyperbolic configuration, characterized by much larger helicity angles. Our results indicate a path for Bloch point engineering in future applications adjusting material parameters and domain wall characteristics., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

11. Scratch and Unity Design in Elementary Education: A Study in Initial Teacher Training

Abstract

Background: The present study analyses the design of programming literacy in the sixth grade of Primary Education, starting from the use of simple activities with visual block-based programming, through "Scratch," and progressively linking difficulty to the use of the "Unity" engine, and the "C#" language, with simple activities identical to those created in "Scratch." Objectives: This research aims to evaluate future teachers' abilities and attitudes regarding programming and its educational possibilities. We intend to evaluate the viability of a teaching proposal that combines a visual block-based programming environment and a more advanced one, based on C#. Method: In the settings of two public Spanish universities, we analyse the possibilities in the training of future teachers who are studying for a degree in Primary Education Teaching and a degree in Pedagogy. Based on a test and three scales, descriptive data and statistical inference are detailed through a quasi-experimental design with a Student's t-test in the first dimension, and a Wilcoxon test in the second dimension. Results: The participants improved their performance and attitudes towards programming with the intervention of the study in the use of coding. Conclusions: It can be concluded that coding is essential in teacher training, and that a greater presence of programming training in higher education is essential. The benefits are visible in the pedagogical approach of coding related to creativity, innovation, motivation, an active approach and interest, highlighting the fact that the implementation of visual block-based programming by blocks and engines is feasible in Elementary Education. The training proposal--provided by appropriate progression, selection, and sequencing of content--fosters basic and practical teacher training, and this can be defined as an apt training solution.

21. Intelligent Tutoring Systems for Word Problem Solving in COVID-19 Days: Could They Have Been (Part of) the Solution?

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic led to the lockdown of schools in many countries, forcing teachers and students to carry out educational activities remotely. In the case of mathematics, developing remote instruction based on both synchronous and asynchronous technological solutions has proven to be an extremely complex challenge. Specifically, this was the case in topics such as word problem solving, as this domain requires intensive supervision and feedback from the teacher. In this piece of research, we present an evaluation of how technology is employed in the teaching of mathematics, with particular relevance to learning during the pandemic. For that purpose, we conducted a systematic review, revealing the almost complete absence of experiments in which the use of technology is not mediated by the teacher. These results reflect a pessimistic vision within the field of mathematics education about the possibilities of learning when the student uses technology autonomously. Bringing good outcomes out of a bad situation, the pandemic crisis may represent a turning point from which to start directing the research gaze towards technological environments such as those mediated by artificial intelligence. As an example, we provide a study illustrating to what extent intelligent tutoring systems can be cost-effective compared to one-to-one human tutoring and mathematic learning-oriented solutions for intensive supervision in the teaching of word problem solving, especially appropriate for remote settings. Despite the potential of these technologies, the experience also showed that student socioeconomic level was a determining factor in the participation rate with an intelligent tutoring system, regardless of whether or not the administration guaranteed students' access to technological resources during the COVID-19 situation.

Abstract

In recent years, the concept of gamification has appeared within the educational sector as a methodological innovation. There are several studies that show the motivational advantages of using this methodology in education. However, there is a dearth of studies that analyse its influence on the promotion of reading. We carried out a quasi-experimental study with 85 fourth graders to evaluate the impact of a gamified platform on both the students' reading comprehension and their attitudes towards reading. The results obtained revealed significant differences in favour of the experimental group with respect to a more traditional approach, regarding both reading comprehension and attitudes towards reading.

23. Building Personalised Homework from a Learning Analytics Based Formative Assessment: Effect on Fifth-Grade Students' Understanding of Fractions

Abstract

This study analyses the potential of a learning analytics (LA) based formative assessment to construct personalised teaching sequences in Mathematics for 5th-grade primary school students. A total of 127 students from Spanish public schools participated in the study. The quasi-experimental study was conducted over the course of six sessions, in which both control and experimental groups participated in a teaching sequence based on mathematical problems. In each session, both groups used audience response systems to record their responses to mathematical tasks about fractions. After each session, students from the control group were given generic homework on fractions--the same activities for all the participants--while students from the experimental group were given a personalised set of activities. The provision of personalised homework was based on the students' errors detected from the use of the LA-based formative assessment. After the intervention, the results indicate a higher student level of understanding of the concept of fractions in the experimental group compared to the control group. Related to motivational dimensions, results indicated that instruction using audience response systems has a positive effect compared to regular mathematics classes.

35. Using Intra-Task Flexibility on an Intelligent Tutoring System to Promote Arithmetic Problem-Solving Proficiency

Abstract

Problem solving is often regarded as one of the most essential cognitive functions in our daily lives, and, for that reason, educational theorists have long stressed the need for its development. As cognitive flexibility is a fundamental characteristic necessary throughout the problem-solving process, the purpose of this study is to analyse students' problem-solving performance after following intra-task flexibility-based training mediated by an intelligent tutoring system. With this aim, 110 fifth and sixth grade students took part in a quasi-experimental study that included six forty-five-minute flexibility-based training sessions preceded and followed by test sessions in order to evaluate eventual problem-solving proficiency improvements. The findings show that intra-task flexibility training enhances students' ability to solve arithmetic word problems, especially when flexibility-related activities are completed sequentially in the same session and not in different sessions. Furthermore, the proposed instruction is particularly helpful in improving girls' problem-solving competence, which can minimize eventual gender gaps and strengthen their STEM vocation.

36. Promoting Second Graders' Attitudes towards Technology through Computational Thinking Instruction

Abstract

The inclusion of Computational Thinking (CT) in the classroom along with the promotion of positive attitudes in early ages towards technology have great relevance in the current educational paradigm. This study analyses whether CT instruction may improve pupils' attitudes towards technology, and also considers whether instructional approaches and gender are influencing factors. The study was conducted with 84 second graders using a quasi-experimental design. The students' attitudes towards technology were measured before and after the intervention using the Pupils' Attitudes Toward Technology test. The results indicate that CT instruction improves children's attitudes towards technology and narrows the gender gap, regardless of the approach. The inclusion of formal activities for CT can have beneficial effects beyond this learning. The reduction of the gender gap in technology at these ages is a fundamental issue for the promotion of scientific vocations among girls.

Abstract

ZUMA-1 (NCT02348216) examined the safety and efficacy of axicabtagene ciloleucel (axi-cel), an autologous CD19-directed chimaeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell therapy, in refractory large B-cell lymphoma. To reduce treatment-related toxicity, several exploratory safety management cohorts were added to ZUMA-1. Specifically, cohort 6 investigated management of cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and neurologic events (NEs) with prophylactic corticosteroids and earlier corticosteroid and tocilizumab intervention. CRS and NE incidence and severity were primary end-points. Following leukapheresis, patients could receive optional bridging therapy per investigator discretion. All patients received conditioning chemotherapy (days -5 through -3), 2 × 106  CAR-T cells/kg (day 0) and once-daily oral dexamethasone [10 mg, day 0 (before axi-cel) through day 2]. Forty patients received axi-cel. CRS occurred in 80% of patients (all grade ≤2). Any grade and grade 3 or higher NEs occurred in 58% and 13% of patients respectively. Sixty-eight per cent of patients did not experience CRS or NEs within 72 h of axi-cel. With a median follow-up of 8·9 months, objective and complete response rates were 95% and 80% respectively. Overall, prophylactic corticosteroids and earlier corticosteroid and/or tocilizumab intervention resulted in no grade 3 or higher CRS, a low rate of grade 3 or higher NEs and high response rates in this study population.
