Black carbon (BC) aerosol measured at the WMO/GAW Station Mt. Waliguan from 1994 to 2017 has been analyzed. The 24 years long-term results showed that the average annual concentration ranges from 1.9 × 102 ng m−3 to 5.1 × 102 ng m−3 from 2001 to 2012, with a growth rate of 29%. However, the concentration of black carbon decreased from 2012 to 2016, with a decline rate of 64%. The monthly average concentration over the 24 years ranged from 90 ng m−3 to 7.0 × 102 ng m−3, with the peak value occurring in April and the lowest value occurring in November. The diurnal variation presented two peak types in different seasons, the first occurred at 20:00 a.m.~23:00 a.m. in the evening, and another around 06:00 a.m.~08:00 a.m. In addition, we found that the transport of black carbon aerosol is closely related to wind transport. The annual maximum black carbon concentration occurred in the east-northeast (ENE) wind direction, with a value of 4.6 × 102 ng m−3, and the second peak value occurred in the E wind direction, with a value of 3.9 × 102 ng m−3. The black carbon concentration of Waliguan was relatively high under the three wind directions of Northeast (NE), ENE, and east (E), which represented the influence of black carbon aerosol generated by human activities located on the east of the station. The 96-h backward trajectory analysis indicated that the sources in the southwest direction made a greater contribution to the black carbon concentration. the pollutants mainly came from the northwest and west sides according to the analysis of potential sources using the CWT approach. 10Be/7Be is a stratospheric sensitive tracer. In this paper, measurements of 10Be/7Be and surface O3 from October 2005 to May 2006 at Mt. Waliguan (hereafter WLG, 100.898°E, 39.287°N, 3810 m, a.s.l.), China global atmospheric watch (GAW) observatory, are introduced and used to investigate the stratosphere-troposphere transport (STT) and its impact on surface O3 on the Tibetan Plateau. The results show that the magnitude of STT is weak in winter, followed by strengthening from the end of winter to 10 7 10 7 the middle of spring (from mid February to mid April) with large increases in Be, Be, Be/ Be and surface O3. At the end of spring (from the end of April to mid May in this paper), the STT weakened, and the continuous increase of surface O3 at WLG is produced by tropospheric photochemistry reactions. Knowledge on atmospheric abundance of peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) is important in assessing the severity of photochemical pollution, and for understanding chemical transformation of reactive odd nitrogen and its impact on the budget of tropospheric ozone (O3). In summer 2006, continuous measurements of PAN were made using an automatic GC–ECD analyzer with an on-line calibrator at a suburban site of Lanzhou (LZ) and a remote site of Mt. Waliguan (WLG) in western China, with concurrent measurements of O3, total reactive nitrogen (NO y ) and carbon monoxide (CO). At LZ, several photochemical episodes were observed during the study, and the average mixing ratio of PAN (plus or minus standard deviation) was 0.76 (±0.89) ppbv with the maximum value of 9.13 ppbv, compared to an average value of 0.44 (±0.16) ppbv at remote WLG. The PAN mixing ratios in LZ exhibited strong diurnal variations with a maximum at noon, while enhanced concentrations of PAN were observed in the evening and a minimum in the afternoon at WLG. The daily O3 and PAN concentration maxima showed a strong correlation (r 2 = 0.91) in LZ, with a regression slope (PAN/O3) of 0.091 ppbv ppbv−1. At WLG, six well-identified pollution plumes (lasting 2–8 h) were observed with elevated concentrations of PAN (and other trace gases), and analysis of backward particle release simulation shows that the high-PAN events at WLG were mostly associated with the transport of air masses that had passed over LZ. Recent developments in satellite remote sensing technologies resulted in the ability to observe major pollution events such as dust and smoke around the world on a daily basis. Satellite imagery can sometimes detect long-range transport episodes. In this paper, a high CO episode at remote GAW station, Mt. Waliguan, detected by MOPITT CO dataset during the end of April 2002, is described. CO concentrations above 600 hPa almost doubled on 27 April and CMDL surface sample measurements also observed this significant CO enhancement. Using NCEP data, satellite fire products data and backward trajectory model we suggest that this high CO episode of 27 April is not a local pollution event, but that it is due to long-range transport from active biomass burning and biofuel burning areas located in the border areas of Pakistan and India. The trajectory cluster analysis shows that the origins of 5-day backward trajectories, for air masses reaching Mt. Waliguan station, at all altitudes, mainly overlap with the fire spot locations detected by TRMM data and biofuel burning in India. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Beryllium-7 (7Be) and lead-210 (210Pb) radioactivity in aerosols collected, from October 2002 to January 2004 at Mt. Waliguan, by the Global Atmospheric Watch (GAW) Station, Qinghai Province is presented. The data were analyzed together with simultaneously measured surface ozone concentrations. We found that short time variations of 7Be and 210Pb were linked to alternations of synoptic weather around the Mt. Waliguan region. 210Pb showed the lowest . 7 concentration in summer while Be showed no obvious seasonal changes. Relatively high 7Be and 210Pb radioactivity was observed at Mt. Waliguan when compared with the observations at other mountain sites in other parts of the world. Surface ozone and 7Be showed a consistent seasonal variation. Surface ozone correlated fairly well with 7Be/210Pb ratio. This suggested that vertical transport from higher altitudes of the atmosphere has predominant effects on the budget of surface ozone at Mt.
