Abstract

Surface acoustic waves at frequencies beyond a few GHz are promising components for quantum technology applications. Applying scanning X-ray diffraction microcopy we directly map the locally resolved components of the three-dimensional strain field generated by a standing surface acoustic wave on GaAs with wavelength $\lambda\simeq500\,$nm corresponding to frequencies near 6 GHz. We find that the lattice distortions perpendicular to the surface are phase-shifted compared to those in propagation direction. Model calculations based on Rayleigh waves confirm our measurements. Our results represent a break through in providing a full characterization of a radio frequency surface acoustic wave beyond plain imaging., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

8. Acoustic Measurements of the Stripe and the Bubble Quantum Hall Phases

Abstract

We launch surface acoustic waves (SAW) along both the $<110>$ and the $<1\bar{1}0>$ directions of a Hall bar and measure the anisotropic conductivity in a high purity GaAs 2-D electron system in the Quantum Hall regime of the stripe and the bubble phases. In the anisotropic stripe phase, SAW propagating along the "easy" $<110>$ direction sense a compressible behavior (finite resistance) which is seen in standard transport measurement only if current flows along the "hard" $<1\bar{1}0>$ direction. In the isotropic bubble phase, the SAW data show compressible behavior in both directions, in marked contrast to the incompressible quantum Hall behavior seen in transport measurements. These results challenge models that assume that both the stripe and the bubble phase consist of incompressible domains and raise important questions about the role of domain boundaries in SAW propagation., Comment: Published version from New Journal of Physics

Abstract

This paper describes the development of a video-based evaluation tool for use in Rett syndrome (RTT). Components include a parent-report checklist, and video filming and coding protocols that contain items on eating, drinking, communication, hand function and movements, personal care and mobility. Ninety-seven of the 169 families who initially agreed to participate returned a videotape within 8 months of the first request. Subjects whose videos were returned had a similar age profile to those who did not provide a video but were more likely to have classical than atypical RTT. Evidence of the content and social validity and inter-rater reliability on 11 videos is provided. Video may provide detailed, objective assessment of function and behaviour in RTT.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To assess performance on an age-standardized neuromotor coordination task among sulfonylurea-treated KCNJ11-related neonatal diabetic patients. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Nineteen children carrying KCNJ11 mutations associated with isolated diabetes (R201H; n = 8), diabetes with neurodevelopmental impairment (V59M or V59A [V59M/A]; n = 8), or diabetes not consistently associated with neurodevelopmental disability (Y330C, E322K, or R201C; n = 3) were studied using the age-standardized Beery-Buktenica Developmental Test of Visual-Motor Integration (VMI). RESULTS: Although R201H subjects tested in the normal range (median standard score = 107), children with V59M/A mutations had significantly lower than expected VMI standard scores (median = 49). 36. Physical and mental health of mothers caring for a child with Rett syndrome

Abstract

OBJECTIVES: Our goal was to investigate the physical and mental health of mothers who care for a child with Rett syndrome. METHODS: We assessed maternal physical and mental health by using the SF-12 version 1 physical component summary and mental component summary scores as the outcome measures of interest. Mothers (n = 135) of children with Rett syndrome completed the SF-12 measure as part of the Australian Rett Syndrome Study in 2002. The analysis investigated linear relationships between physical and mental health scores and maternal, family, and child characteristics. RESULTS: Mothers ranged in age from 21 to 60 years and their children from 3 to 27 years. Nearly half of these mothers (47.4%) indicated that they worked full-time or part-time outside the home, and 41% had a combined family (gross) income of <40000 Australian dollars. The resultant model for physical health demonstrated that the following factors were positively associated with better maternal physical health: the mother working full-time or part-time outside the home, having some high school education, having private health insurance, the child not having breathing problems in the last 2 years, the child not having home-based structured therapy, and high scores on the Family Resource Scale (indicating adequacy of time resources for basic and family needs). The resultant model for mental health demonstrated that the following factors were positively associated with better maternal mental health: the mother working full-time or part-time outside the home, the child not having a fracture in the last 2 years, lesser reporting of facial stereotypes and involuntary facial movements, being in a well-adjusted marriage, and having low stress scores. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that the most important predictors of maternal physical and emotional health are child behavior, caregiver demands, and family function.
