Purpose: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, effective health education curricula feature instructional strategies and learning experiences built on theoretical approaches that have effectively influenced health-related behaviors among youth. The attitudes, beliefs and norms (ABN) domain is proposed as an alternative to Krathwohl's taxonomy of the affective domain, which is of limited utility in planning health education. Methods: The ABN framework, based upon the ABN domain, provides a blue print for selecting theory-informed affective learning objectives. Conclusions: Use of the ABN framework facilitates the identification of rigorous and measurable learning objectives based upon the constructs of health behavior theory.

Purpose: This paper highlights the importance of conducting structured, student-centered discussions, known as debriefs, following experiential learning activities in health education. Drawing upon Kolb's experiential learning theory and literature from scholars in simulation-based training, the authors outline key considerations for planning and facilitating debriefs. Methods: The debrief is initiated immediately following the learning experience. Students are prompted to describe and analyze their experiences, identify lessons learned, and discuss their application. Conclusions: Conducting debriefs with experiential learning activities helps students find meaning in their experiences and connect what they have learned to lesson objectives, the real word, and their own lives.

The introduction of the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model has challenged professionals working in school health to inspire school districts to embrace WSCC's philosophical and practical components. Adopting the WSCC model to foster wellness priorities in school districts encourages healthy people and healthy environments to support academic achievement. Building upon the District's existing coordinated school health practices and two emerging themes, proactive measures from the District and school administrators, the District Health and Wellness Coordinator, and the school health education faculty from a local college envisioned the roll-out of the WSCC model as an opportunity to refocus and recharge the District's commitment to wellness priorities and stimulate the teacher's role to foster a healthy school setting. The successful experiences of early adopter school districts during the roll out of the WSCC model can provide guidance to others as they plan to introduce the model and advocate for its adoption. This paper models one strategy to introduce the WSCC model to districts; and provides participants with functional knowledge and ideas for practical application. With a focus on merging academics with health, the staff was recognized as the change agent and practices were instituted to rebrand the district's wellness program.

Health problems such as sexually transmitted infections and diabetes continue to rise, especially among African American and Hispanic adolescents in low-income communities. Youth development programs are an effective public health response, benefiting participants, the programs that serve them, and their community. Purpose: To explore the efficacy of integrating the Developmental Assets (DA) and Socio-Ecological Model (SEM) in a pilot youth program, the Youth Health Action Board (YHAB). Methods: YHAB was created and implemented by youth. Its impact was examined through individual interviews to learn youth impressions of how their experience affected themselves and their community. Results: YHAB participants feel they personally grew through their experience of building external support in their community, increasing both internal and external DAs. Internal assets were dominant, however students benefited from external support and empowerment. Discussion: YHAB was a successful integration of the DA and SEM for youth development. Additional research could deepen findings and allow extrapolation to broader populations. Translation to Health Education Practice: YHAB program strength lies in its youth development process. Similar programs should look different in each community, as community and youth needs and resources shape program activities. (Contains 3 figures.)

Many a bar fight has broken out over punk rock's birth. Fans tend to split into two camps: those who credit the Ramones' first appearance at CBGB in New York City circa 1974 and those who point to the early galvanizing Sex Pistols shows in London around 1975-76. It is probably more accurate to say the New York and London scenes are two sides of the same coin; each inspired the other with a rivalry of one-upmanship. The New York stirrings came first, but it was the younger, more fashion-conscious London movement that captured the attention and outrage of the world. One point is indisputable: punk rock lives. Often fast and always loud and adventurous, it started as a crucial strike against an increasingly bloated music industry and a stripping-down of rock music to its barest essentials--three chords and the truth, indeed; it has survived three decades of rabid co-opting by Madison Avenue owing to the startling simplicity, innovation, and nerve of its discography. Several generations of rebellion-seeking teenagers have learned to play guitar, bass, and drums with the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, and the Clash--punk's most recognizable exponents--and many have gone on to form influential contemporary groups of their own (e.g., Nirvana, Rancid, Green Day). In this article, the author examines the initial explosion of punk music, 1974-78, in New York and London, which had the clubs and media to foster indelible movements. Furthermore, many of the history titles in the bibliography presented in this article contain excellent discographies, and ambitious collection development librarians are also encouraged to surf the web for die-hard fans' lists and time lines. While many punk performances can be found on YouTube, because of copyright issues, they may prefer to steer their patrons to the selected DVDs.

Concerned about reports of a 15% decline in HIV testing among high-risk youth in an earlier study in Pittsburgh, this study was initiated to explore reasons why young people are not getting tested for HIV, while gathering data on their respective level of risk taking behaviors. A total of 580 surveys were collected from youth aged between 14 and 24. Overall, 17% of youth were found to be at high to some risk for HIV infection, while many of them agreed they were not at-risk for HIV. Young MSM reported being afraid of testing HIV positive. Young people continue to engage in high-risk behaviors and avoid HIV testing, and efforts are needed to identify these youth and equip them with the resources they need to avoid infection.
