Objective: This systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of moxibustion as a complementary or alternative treatment for asthma., Methods: Seven databases were searched up to June 23, 2024, to identify RCTs assessing moxibustion for bronchial asthma. The outcomes of interest included response to treatment, asthma control, quality of life, lung function, immunological indicators, and incidence of adverse events (AEs). The treatment effects were measured by proportional odds ratios or mean differences with 95% confidence intervals., Results: Thirty-seven RCTs (n = 2,879) were included. Moderate- to very low-quality evidence showed that compared with anti-asthmatic drugs alone, moxibustion plus anti-asthmatic drugs led to a significantly better response and greater increases in lung function, asthma control, and IgE levels. However, the combination therapy had no effect on children's quality of life. In the active comparisons, moxibustion resulted in a superior response to treatment and a greater improvement in asthma control and had comparable effects on lung function, quality of life, and IgE levels compared with anti-asthmatic drugs. The effects of moxibustion on the proportions of CD4 + and CD8 + T cells and the eosinophil count were inconsistent between the add-on and active comparisons. All reported AEs related to moxibustion were mild., Conclusions: Moxibustion, as an adjunctive treatment or used alone, may improve the response to treatment, lung function, asthma control, and IgE levels in patients with asthma with good safety. Background: Urinary incontinence is a common complication following a stroke. No specific drugs are available in Western medicine, and surgical treatment is highly traumatic, limiting its clinical application. This study aimed to observe the clinical efficacy of electroacupuncture at the "Sacral Four Points" combined with moxibustion at the "Abdominal Three Points" on post-stroke urinary incontinence, exploring its impact on urodynamics and quality of life., Methods: Patients with post-stroke urinary incontinence treated at our Hospital from January 2021 to December 2023 were recruited. The study included 117 patients: 57 in the electroacupuncture group and 60 in the combined group. Urodynamic parameters were measured, and scores from the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Urinary Incontinence Short Form (ICIQ-UI SF) and the Incontinence Quality of Life Questionnaire (I-QOL) were recorded before, and after the first and third courses of treatment. Clinical efficacy and adverse reactions were evaluated post-treatment., Results: The study found no significant differences in clinical characteristics between the groups ( p > 0.05), providing a baseline for comparison. Both groups showed substantial decreases in leakage volume after one course of treatment ( p < 0.05), with a reduction in the ICIQ-UI SF score ( p < 0.05) and an increase in the I-QOL score ( p < 0.05). After three courses of treatment, the leakage volume of patients in both groups significantly decreased ( p < 0.05), the ICIQ-UI SF score decreased ( p < 0.05), and the I-QOL score increased ( p < 0.05). The combined group showed a lower leakage volume compared to the electroacupuncture group ( p < 0.05), with lower ICIQ-UI SF scores ( p = 0.027) and higher I-QOL scores ( p = 0.048). Importantly, the total effective rate was significantly higher in the combined group (88.33% vs 64.91%, p = 0.037), demonstrating the safety and efficacy of the treatment., Conclusions: Electroacupuncture at the "Sacral Four Points" combined with moxibustion at the "Abdominal Three Points" improves the clinical symptoms and enhances the quality of life for patients with post-stroke urinary incontinence, showing superior results compared to electroacupuncture alone., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest., (© 2024 The Author(s).)

Background: Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a pervasive, persistent, and distressing symptom experienced by cancer patients, for which few treatments are available. We investigated the efficacy and safety of infrared laser moxibustion (ILM) for improving fatigue in breast cancer survivors., Methods: A three-arm, randomized, sham-controlled clinical trial (6-week intervention plus 12-week observational follow-up) was conducted at a tertiary hospital in Shanghai, China. The female breast cancer survivors with moderate to severe fatigue were randomized 2:2:1 to ILM (n = 56) sham ILM (n = 56), and Waitlist control (WLC)(n = 28) groups. Patients in the ILM and sham ILM (SILM) groups received real or sham ILM treatment, 2 sessions per week for 6 weeks, for a total of 12 sessions. The primary outcome was change in the Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI) score from baseline to week 6 with follow-up until week 18 assessed in the intention-to-treat population., Results: Between June 2018 and July 2021, 273 patients were assessed for eligibility, and 140 patients were finally enrolled and included in the intention-to-treat analysis. Compared with WLC, ILM reduced the average BFI score by 0.9 points (95% CI, 0.3 to 1.6, P = .007) from baseline to week 6, with a difference between the groups of 1.1 points (95% CI, 0.4 to 1.8, P = .002) at week 18. Compared with SILM, ILM treatment resulted in a non-significant reduction in the BFI score (0.4; 95% CI, -0.2 to 0.9, P = .206) from baseline to week 6, while the between-group difference was significant at week 18 (0.7; 95% CI, 0.2 to 1.3, P = .014). No serious adverse events were reported., Conclusion: While ILM was found to be safe and to significantly reduce fatigue compared with WLC, its promising efficacy against the sham control needs to be verified in future adequately powered trials., Trial Registration: Clinicaltrials.gov: NCT04144309. Objective: Although several acupuncture and moxibustion therapies have been tested in managing breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL), there is little consensus regarding the best options for treating this condition. This systematic review and network meta-analysis compared the efficacy of various acupuncture and/or moxibustion therapies for BCRL., Methods: Seven databases and two clinical registration centers were searched from their inception to December 1st, 2023. The Cochrane Collaboration risk-of-bias assessment tool evaluated the quality of included RCTs. A pairwise meta-analysis was performed in STATA 16.0, while a network meta-analysis was performed in R 4.2.2., Results: 18 studies were included in this analysis. Our results showed that acupuncture and moxibustion methods had great advantages in improving BCRL of patients with breast cancer. In particular, needle-warming moxibustion (NWM) could be the optimal acupuncture and moxibustion method for improving clinical effectiveness and reducing the degree of swelling of affected limbs., Conclusion: Our findings suggest that NWM has great potential in treating BCRL. It may reduce arm circumference, lower swelling levels, and improve clinical effectiveness. Introduction: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a global chronic inflammatory bowel disease, and the poor efficacy of currently available pharmacological regimens makes the management of UC a great challenge. Moxibustion has shown great potential in the management of UC. However, its effectiveness and safety are still controversial. The purpose of this study is to synthesise the latest evidence regarding the clinical efficacy and safety of moxibustion for UC., Methods and Analysis: The Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMBASE, CNKI, Wanfang, VIP and SinoMed databases will be searched from inception to July 2023, to identify all randomised controlled trials with moxibustion for UC. The primary outcome will be clinical efficacy, as measured by validated scales. The serum inflammatory factor, colonoscopy results, quality of life, recurrence rate and adverse events will be the secondary outcomes. The Cochrane Risk of Bias 2.0 tool will be used to assess the methodological quality of each included trial. All data extraction will be carried out independently by two investigators. RevMan V.5.4 software will be used for data analysis and Cochran's Q statistic and I 2 test will be used to assess heterogeneity between studies. In addition, we will perform subgroup analyses, sensitivity analyses and publication bias if the available data are sufficient. Low back pain (LBP) is the common disease in the department of acupuncture and moxibustion in hospital and is treated basically in terms of kidney deficiency. Through clinical observation and in association with classic literature, the authors proposes that the five zang -organs all can lead to LBP relevant to internal injury. Based on the analysis of typical cases, the authors expounds the nature of pain caused by each zang -organ and clarified the keys of the differentiation. LBP related to the liver is manifested mainly as lumbar soreness and distending pain, accompanied by the limited forward and backward extension of the lumbar vertebra. When the dysfunction of the heart and lung are involved, the hollow pain is dominant, combined with the weakness and emptiness feeling in the lumbar region. When LBP is caused by the dysfunction of the spleen, muscular pain is the chief complaint, combined with heaviness and soreness in the local, and the stiffness on palpation. When rooted at the kidney, LBP is manifested chiefly by dull pain, with deep location of illness, mostly around the lumbar sacral region.

Background: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is the most common chronic degenerative joint disease and places a substantial burden on the public health resources in China. The purpose of this study is to preliminarily evaluate whether infrared laser moxibustion (ILM) is non-inferior to traditional moxibustion (TM) in the treatment of KOA., Materials and Methods: In the designed Zelen-design randomized controlled non-inferiority clinical trial, a total of 74 patients with KOA will be randomly allocated to one of two interventions: ILM treatment or TM treatment. All participants will receive a 6-week treatment and a follow-up 4 weeks after treatment. The primary outcomes will be the mean change in pain scores on the numeric rating scale (NRS) measured at baseline and the end of last treatment at week 6. The secondary outcomes will be the pain scores on the NRS from weeks 1 to 5 after the start of treatment and the changes from baseline to endpoints (weeks 6 and 10) in the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), SF-36, knee circumference, and 6-min walking test. In addition, safety assessment will be performed throughout the trial., Conclusion: The results of our study will help determine whether a 6-week treatment with ILM is non-inferior to TM in patients with KOA, therefore providing evidence to verify if ILM can become a safer alternative for TM in clinical applications in the future., Trial Registration: Clinical Trial Registration Platform (ChiCTR2200065264); Pre-results. Moxibustion has been shown to have a potential antihypertensive effect, but its applicability for the primary care of hypertension is unclear. The authors conducted a multicenter randomized controlled trial (RCT) with patient preference arms to investigate the effect, safety, cost-effectiveness, and compliance of moxibustion in community patients with hypertension. Patients with primary hypertension were enrolled from seven communities randomly or nonrandomly assigned to receive self-administered moxibustion + the original hypertensive regimen or the original hypertensive regimen alone for 6 months. The authors mainly evaluated the effects of moxibustion on hypertensive outcomes and adverse events. As a result, a total of 160 and 240 patients were recruited into the randomized and nonrandomized arms, respectively, with 87.5% completing the follow-up. At month 6, there was a significantly greater reduction in systolic blood pressure (SBP) (difference: -10.57 mmHg), a higher proportion of responders (82.2% vs. 53.7%; odds ratio 4.00), and better improvements in hypertensive symptoms and quality of life (QoL) in the moxibustion group than in the control group in the randomized population, but there was no significant between-group difference in diastolic blood pressure (DBP). The nonrandomized findings showed the same effect direction for all outcomes, except for DBP. All moxibustion-related adverse events were mild. In conclusion, moxibustion can reduce SBP and improve hypertensive symptoms and QoL in community patients with hypertension, with good safety and low cost, although its effect on DBP remains uncertain. Objective: The aim of this study is to provide a scoping review of the clinical literature on moxibustion therapy for the treatment of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Design: The PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, CNKI, Wanfang, and VIP databases were searched from January 1, 2020, to August 31, 2022. Essential data were extracted from each article, and the data were displayed using tables and graphs. The study did not require IRB approval. Results: This scoping review included 14 research articles: 8 observational studies, 5 randomized controlled trials, and 1 nonrandomized clinical trial. All the studies were published by Chinese scholars. The findings revealed that moxibustion can contribute to reducing the symptoms of patients with COVID-19, improving inflammation and immune indicators, and shortening the time of nucleic acid negative conversion. Moxibustion confers curative effects on patients of all ages and degrees of illness. In addition, moxibustion can optimize the prognosis of patients in the rehabilitation period. The most commonly chosen acupoints are ST36, RN4, RN8, and RN12. No side effect was mentioned in the included studies. Conclusion: Moxibustion can produce a good effect in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients with COVID-19. It is safe, effective, simple, and noninvasive and should be included as standard care.

Background: Tinnitus is a common otological symptom that can seriously affect a patient's quality of life, and effective therapies are still lacking. A large number of studies have found that compared with traditional therapy, acupuncture and moxibustion treatment are beneficial for the treatment of primary tinnitus, although current evidence remains inconclusive. This systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture and moxibustion for primary tinnitus., Methods: We conducted a comprehensive literature review in multiple databases from inception through December 2021, including PubMed, Medline, Ovid, Embase, Science Direct, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Data, Chinese Biomedical Literature (CBM) and VIP Database. The database search was supplemented by subsequent periodic scrutiny of unpublished and ongoing RCTs from the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) and the WHO International Clinical Trials Registry (ICTRP). We included RCTs that compared acupuncture and moxibustion with pharmacological therapies, oxygen or physical therapies, or no treatment, for treating primary tinnitus. The main outcome measures were Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) and efficacy rate; the secondary outcome measures were Tinnitus Evaluation Questionnaire (TEQ), Pure Tone Average (PTA), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) and adverse events. Data accumulation and synthesis included meta-analysis, subgroup analysis, publication bias, risk-of-bias assessment, sensitivity analysis, and adverse events. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) system was used to grade the evidence quality., Results: We included 34 RCTs involving 3086 patients. Results indicated that compared with the controls, acupuncture and moxibustion resulted in significantly lower scores on the THI, achieved a significantly higher efficacy rate, reduced scores on TEQ, PTA, VAS, HAMA and HAMD. The meta-analysis revealed that acupuncture and moxibustion have a good safety profile in the treatment of primary tinnitus., Conclusion: The results showed that acupuncture and moxibustion for primary tinnitus yielded the greatest decrease in tinnitus severity and improvement in quality of life. Cancer treatment remains a significant challenge for the medical community, and improved therapies are necessary to treat cancer and its associated complications. Current anticancer therapies often have significant side effects, underscoring the need for new treatment options. Moxibustion is a representative external therapy used in traditional Chinese medicine. This review examines clinical studies demonstrating moxibustion's ability to improve the efficacy of radiotherapy and chemotherapy and control tumor progression. Moxibustion can prevent and treat various complications of cancer, including cancer-related or therapy-induced gastrointestinal symptoms, myelosuppression, fatigue, pain, and postoperative lymphedema. has also been shown to enhance the quality of life for cancer patients. However, very few studies have investigated the underlying mechanisms for these effects, a topic that requires systematic elucidation. Evidence has shown that moxibustion alone or combined with chemotherapy can improve survival and inhibit tumor growth in cancer-bearing animal models. The anticancer effect of moxibustion is associated with alleviating the tumor immunosuppressive and vascular microenvironments. Additionally, the therapeutic effects of moxibustion may originate from the heat and radiation produced during the combustion process on acupoints or lesions. This evidence provides a scientific basis for the clinical application of moxibustion in anticancer treatment and reducing the side effects of cancer therapies and helps promote the precise application of moxibustion in cancer treatment.

Background: Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is a common degenerative disease that severely impacts the quality of life of patients. Thunder-fire moxibustion is an ancient Chinese medicine-based external therapeutic procedure that has been employed for pain relief until this day. The focus of our study was to demonstrate the effectiveness and safety of thunder-fire moxibustion in the treatment of LDH., Methods: The literature databases searched included the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Springer, PubMed, Wanfang digital periodicals database, China national knowledge infrastructure, VIP, and Chinese biomedical literature database, and the search period was from database creation to March 2022. These include randomized controlled trials of Thunder-Fire moxibustion alone or in combination with other therapies for LDH. Two evaluators independently extracted data. We accessed the quality of inclusive studies through a Cochrane risk of bias tool. Meta-analyses were performed using Review Manager (Version 5.5). Data was analyzed using fixed-effects or random-effects models, depending on the heterogeneity test results., Results: The meta-analysis included 17 studies involving 1344 patients with LDH. The analysis results were as follows: compared with other therapies, the efficacy of thunder-fire moxibustion was statistically significant; the total effective rate (RR = 1.20; 95%CI [1.15, 1.26]; P < .00001), the Japanese orthopaedic association score (MD = 4.42; 95%CI [4.10, 4.73]; P < .00001), the pain score (SMD = -2.66; 95% CI [-3.39, -1.94]; P < .00001). Only 2 reported no adverse events in the included literature, and the remaining had no relevant records. The quality of the evidence in the 17 papers we examined was low or very low., Conclusion: Thunder-Fire moxibustion is effective in relieving discomfort in patients with LDH. Background: Acupuncture or moxibustion has been proven to be effective for patients with primary dysmenorrhea (PDM). However, the respective advantages and potential central mechanism of acupuncture and moxibustion are worthy of investigating to promote their further application., Methods: In this randomized controlled neuroimaging trial, 72 patients with PDM will be randomly assigned to three groups: acupuncture treatment group, moxibustion treatment group, and waiting list group. The acupuncture treatment group and moxibustion treatment group will receive acupuncture or moxibustion, respectively, for a total of 3 sessions over 3 consecutive menstrual cycles, and the waiting list group will not take acupuncture or moxibustion during these 3 menstrual cycles. The COX Menstrual Symptom Scale (CMSS), visual analog scale (VAS), and Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) will be used to evaluate the clinical efficacy. The Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS), Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) will be used to assess the mental state and quality of life at baseline and at the end of treatment. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) will be performed for detecting the cerebral activity changes at baseline and at the end of the treatment. The clinical data and imaging data will be analyzed among the groups. Correlation analysis will be conducted to investigate the relationship between brain functional changes and symptom improvement., Discussion: The application of the randomized controlled neuroimaging trial will provide objective and valid evidence about how acupuncture and moxibustion treatment relieve menstrual pain. Background: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a disease that affects the quality of life by causing lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in men. Electroacupuncture (EA) and moxibustion therapy have been suggested as an adjunct therapy for improving LUTS in patients with BPH, but clinical studies evaluating the effectiveness of EA and its cotreatment with electronic moxibustion (EM) in patients who have been prescribed alpha blockers have yet to be reported. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of EA and EM., Methods: Twenty-eight patients diagnosed with BPH were randomized to treatment group (TG, n = 14) or control group (CG, n = 14). The TG continued to use the previously prescribed alpha blocker and received the cotreatment of EA and EM 3 times a week for 6 weeks. The CG continued to use the previously prescribed alpha blocker alone for 6 weeks. The primary outcome was the mean change in the international prostate symptom score (IPSS) from baseline to week 6. The secondary outcomes were IPSS at week 3 and 12, clinical relevance, IPSS life satisfaction, EuroQol-Five dimensions, average urinary flow rate, maximum urinary flow rate, and prostate volume., Results: The IPSS decreased at all time points with a statistically significant difference between the 2 groups (3W: P = .0313; 6W: P = .0010; 12W: P = .0304). Based on the minimal clinically important difference (MCID, 3 points), there were significant differences between the TG and the CG at week 3, 6, and 12 (3W: P = .0461; 6W: P = .0123; 12W: P = .0216). Significant group × week interaction effects were found for the IPSS score (P = .0018), as determined from analyses using repeated measures analysis of variance. There were no significant differences between the 2 groups in IPSS life satisfaction, EuroQol-Five dimensions, average urinary flow rate, maximum urinary flow rate, and prostate volume., Conclusion: EA and its cotreatment with EM might have a beneficial effect as an adjunct therapy in improving LUTS in patients with BPH. Background: The prevalence of allergic rhinitis (AR), an inflammatory disease, is gradually increasing. Studies have reported that moxibustion is effective for treating AR. Electric heating moxibustion (EM) was developed to offer adaptable heat stimulation without the generation of smoke., Objectives: The objective of this study was to examine the possibility of EM in treating perennial allergic rhinitis (PAR) and to assess the feasibility of using this technique on a larger scale by comparing EM with acupuncture (AC)., Design: A randomized pilot study was conducted on 40 patients with PAR. Patients were randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups: EM or AC. The primary outcome measure was the change in the total nasal symptom score (TNSS) between before and after treatment. The secondary outcome measures were the changes in the rhinoconjunctivitis quality of life questionnaire (RQLQ), nasal endoscopy index for pattern identification, pattern identification questionnaire for AR, total serum immunoglobulin E (IgE), eosinophil count, and adverse effects (AEs)., Results: The results showed a statistically significant improvement in mean TNSS and RQLQ scores in both groups (p < 0.05), but no significant difference between the two groups. However, mean changes in itching and sneezing TNSS were significantly higher in the AC group. There was no significant difference in total serum IgE or eosinophil count before versus after treatment, nor was there any significant difference of three pattern subgroups between the two groups in the mean TNSS change. While the AC group reported two treatment-related AEs, there were no treatment-related AEs in the EM group., Conclusion: This trial provides evidence that EM isa safe alternative treatment for patients with PAR., Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03342105. Acupuncture and moxibustion have been accepted as add-on options for primary dysmenorrhea (PD); however, the clinical evidence is still inadequate. We searched AMED, CENTRAL, EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, CBM, CNKI, VIP, Wangfang database, ANZCTR, ClinicalTrials.gov, and the WHO ICTRP, from their inception to February 2021. The pooled analysis of 13 RCTs with 675 participants for VAS showed that acupuncture and moxibustion were more effective in managing PD than the control group with the MD of -1.93 (95% CI [-2.80, -1.06] and -2.67 (95% CI [-4.96, -0.38]). With the CMSS, seven studies with 487 participants showed that these modalities were more effective than the control group with the MD of -7.58 (95% CI [-10.97, -4.19]) and -3.78 (95% CI [-6.90, -0.66]). The findings indicated that acupuncture and moxibustion could relieve pain effectively and has fewer adverse events (AEs) in managing PD.

Background: Evidence about moxibustion and abdominal massage for treating constipation in older hospitalized patients is limited., Purpose: To investigate the safety and effectiveness of moxibustion and abdominal massage in hospitalized older patients with constipation., Methods: Hospitalized older patients (age ≥60 years) with constipation were retrospectively categorized as 2 cohorts according to whether the patients received moxibustion and abdominal massage in addition to routine nursing care. Gastrointestinal symptoms, Constipation Assessment Scale (CAS) scores, and Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) scores were compared before and after treatment between cohorts., Results: The 2 cohorts (n = 100 for each) had similar baseline characteristics and gastrointestinal symptoms; the control cohort and the additional intervention cohort also had similar CAS scores (7.14 ± 3.67 vs 7.48 ± 2.96, respectively), and GDS scores (>17: 31% vs 29%, respectively). Improvement in the 2 scores from baseline was observed after 2 weeks in both the control cohort and the additional intervention cohort (CAS, 5.37 ± 5.34 and 3.80 ± 4.47, respectively; GDS, >17: 28% and 15%, respectively). The cohort with additional interventions had a lower ineffective rate (defined as persistent symptoms or absence of decrease in CAS, 49% vs 32%; P = .028) but had more diarrhea (9% vs 21%; P = .017)., Conclusion: Moxibustion and abdominal massage may help relieve constipation in hospitalized elderly patients, but attention should be paid to the increased occurrence of diarrhea. More study is needed.

Objective: To observe the clinical effect of moxibustion combined with plucking technique at Jiquan (HT 1) for preventing peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC)-related venous thrombosis in the upper limbs of malignant tumor patients., Methods: A total of 80 malignant tumor patients undergoing PICC were randomized into an observation group and a control group, 40 cases in each one. In the control group, the routine care for PICC was exerted. In the observation group, besides the routine care, moxibustion combined with plucking technique at Jiquan (HT 1) was added. Mild moxibustion was exerted along the venous distribution of PICC (avoiding the entry site) for 10 to 15 min, and then, the circling moxibustion was applied to Quchi (LI 11), Xuehai (SP 10) and Tianfu (LU 3), 3 to 5 min at each acupoint. Finally, plucking technique was given at Jiquan (HT 1) for 5 to 10 min. This combined therapy was intervened since the 2nd day of PICC placement, once daily, 5 times a week, for 3 weeks totally. The incidence of the PICC-related venous thrombosis in the upper limbs was compared between the two groups on day 42 of placement. On day 2, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 and 42 of PICC placement, the peak systolic velocity (PSV) and the end-diastolic velocity (EDV) of the subclavicular vein on the placement side were observed separately in the two groups., Results: The incidence of the PICC-related venous thrombosis in the upper limbs in the observation group was lower than that in the control group (2.5% [1/40] vs 17.5% [7/40], P <0.05). From day 7 to 35 of PICC placement, PSV of the subclavicular vein on the placement side was higher than that on the day 2 of PICC placement in the observation group ( P <0.05). On day 28 and 42 of PICC placement, PSV of the subclavicular vein on the placement side was lower than that on the day 2 of PICC placement in the control group ( P <0.05). In the observation group, EDV of the subclavicular vein on the placement side was higher than that on the day 2 of PICC placement from day 7 to 28 of PICC placement ( P <0.05). In the control group, EDV of the subclavicular vein on the placement side from day 28 to 42 of PICC placement was lower than that on the day 2 of PICC placement ( P <0.05). From day 7 to 42 of PICC placement, PSV and EDV of the subclavicular vein on the placement side in the observation group were all higher than those in the control group ( P <0.01, P <0.05)., Conclusion: The combined treatment of moxibustion with plucking technique at Jiquan (HT 1) can effectively prevent PICC-related venous thrombosis in the upper limbs and improve venous blood flow velocity in malignant tumor patients.

Background: Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is a common and frequently occurring disease in clinics. Low back pain and sciatica are the presenting symptoms of LDH. To some extent, it can be considered that measures with the capability to improve low back pain or sciatica have the potential to treat LDH. Ma's bamboo-based medicinal moxibustion therapy can effectively reduce the degree of low back pain and has been widely used. Studies of small sample size have seen significant improvement on pain relief. The aim of this trial is to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of Ma's bamboo-based medicinal moxibustion therapy in the treatment of LDH low back pain., Methods/design: The trial is a multicenter, randomized, parallel-group, non-inferiority study. Three hundred and twelve patients will be randomly assigned to a Ma's bamboo-based medicinal moxibustion group (n=156) and an acupuncture group (n=156). Patients in each group will receive treatment every day, 6 times a week, 12 times in total. Follow-up will be conducted 14 days after treatment. The primary outcome will be the visual analog scale(VAS) at baseline, after 6 times of treatment, end of treatment, and follow-up. The secondary outcomes will include Oswestry disability indexes (ODI), modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association low back pain (M-JOA) score, serum β-endorphin (β-EP), and serum substance P (SP). β-EP and SP, as well as safety evaluation indexes (routine blood, liver, and kidney function and electrocardiogram), will be measure at baseline and after the end of treatment. Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Moxibustion therapy is a traditional Chinese medicine external treatment method, which involves crushing dried herb Artemisia argyi H. Lév. & Vanio and rolling it into a long cigarette-like strip, igniting it and using its warmth to stimulate specific acupuncture points for a certain period of time. It is often used in Asia to treat various diseases, especially abdominal pain. Clinical reports suggest that acupuncture and moxibustion are the effective treatment for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea (IBS-D). However, there is no placebo-controlled study to prove its safety and efficacy., Objective: To evaluate the effects of mild moxibustion (MM) for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D) through comparisons with those of placebo moxibustion., Patients and Methods: This was a single-site, randomized controlled trial was conducted at Shanghai Research Institute of Acupuncture and Meridian in China and enrolled 76 participants who met the Rome IV diagnostic criteria for IBS-D between May 2017 and December 2019. 76 participants were randomized to either mild moxibustion (MM) or placebo moxibustion group (PM) in a 1:1 ratio. 18 sessions of MM or PM were implemented over the course of 6 weeks (3 times per week). The primary outcome was adequate relief after 6 weeks of treatment., Results: Of 76 patients with IBS-D who were randomized (38 in the MM group and 38 in the PM group) were included in the intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis set. After treatment at week 6, the response rate was significantly higher in the MM group than the PM group (81.58% vs. 36.84%) with an estimated difference of 44.74 (95% CI, 23.46 to 66.02, P < 0.001). Background: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a common chronic inflammatory spondyloarthropathy. It is considered in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that the pathogenesis of AS is mainly due to Yang deficiency of kidney governor meridian and internal prosperity of cold evil. Thunder-fire moxibustion is a kind of moxibustion that is characterized in abundance in drug composition, high heat radiation, and strong penetration. Thunder-fire moxibustion on the spinal segment of the governor meridian in treating AS seems compatible with the main pathogenesis of kidney deficiency and governor meridian cold. The trial aims to explore the efficacy of thunder-fire moxibustion in patients with AS of kidney deficiency and governor meridian cold and its influence on bone metabolism, through a prospective randomized trial., Methods: Sixty patients with AS of kidney deficiency and governor meridian cold will be recruited and randomly assigned to the treatment group (thunder-fire moxibustion three times a week plus basic treatment) and the control group (basic treatment) at the Center of TCM of Beijing Luhe Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University (Beijing, China). Each patient will be treated for 4 weeks. The primary outcome is the efficacy of TCM syndrome, and the secondary outcome indexes will include the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI), Short-Form-36 Questionnaire (SF-36), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL). TNF-α and RANKL with observation will be determined once respectively before and after treatment, while the other indexes will be observed once prior to the treatment, 2 weeks post-treatment, and at the end of the treatment. Side effects will be recorded and analyzed as well. Background: Recurrent implantation failure (RIF) in the majority of patients undergoing in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET) is caused by various factors such as maternal age, embryo quality, endometrial receptivity (ER), and immunity. The incidence of RIF is usually between 5 and 10%. Previous studies have shown that herb-partitioned moxibustion on the navel is one of the treatment methods of acupuncture with a positive effect on pregnancy. However, its application in the treatment of RIF has not been reported. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and safeness of herb-partitioned moxibustion on the navel in improving the outcome of frozen embryo transfer (FET) in patients with RIF., Methods: This study conducts a randomized controlled trial (RCT). It is planned to recruit 210 patients undergoing RIF for FET from Affiliated Hospital of Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and randomly divide them into the treatment group and the control group in a ratio of 1:1. The patient of the treatment group will be treated with herb-partitioned moxibustion on the navel once a week for three consecutive menstrual cycles. No intervention will be used in the control group for 3 menstrual cycles. In the fourth menstrual cycle, all patients will undergo artificial cycle to prepare the endometrium for FET. The pregnancy outcomes will be recorded after a 3-month follow-up. Primary outcome will be assessed as the ongoing pregnancy rate compared with the control group. Secondary outcomes include the endometrial type, resistance index (RI), pulsatility index (PI) of the bilateral uterine artery, endometrial blood flow, serum estradiol (E 2 ), progesterone (P), biochemical pregnancy rate, implantation rate, and clinical pregnancy rate., Discussion: If the results show that the herb-partitioned moxibustion on the navel can improve IVF-ET outcomes in patients with RIF, it will be recommended in clinical practice., Trial Registration: Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR) ChiCTR2100043954 . Objective: To explore the efficacy and safety of Zhuang medicine medicated thread moxibustion (ZMTM) on psoriasis vulgaris., Methods: A multicenter, randomized, parallel controlled clinical trial was designed. A total of 241 outpatients with psoriasis vulgaris were randomly divided into a control group (120 cases) and a treatment group (121 cases) using a central block randomization from June 2015 to May 2018. The control group was treated with Western medicines alone including pidotimod dispersible tablets, vitamin B compound tablets, and compound cod liver oil-zinc oxide ointment. The treatment group was treated with ZMTM every 2 days combined with Western medicines. The two groups received continuous intervention for 30 days. The primary outcome was Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI), and the secondary outcomes included Itch Rating Scale, Dermatology Quality of Life Index (DLQI), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA), as well as PASI response rate. Meanwhile, adverse events were evaluated during the whole clinical trial. Follow-up was carried out 30 days after treatment., Results: There were 5 cases of shedding in this trial. In intention-to-treat analysis, 236 cases were included and each group contained 118 cases. On the 30th and 60th days, PASI scores of patients in each group were significantly lower than that at baseline (P<0.01) and the PASI score reduction of the treatment group was greater than that of the control group (P<0.01). Itch Rating Scale, DLQI, and HAMA scale were decreased in both groups after treatment, and the treatment group showed a better therapeutic effect (P<0.01). The response rates of PASI 50 and 75 were significantly higher than those in the control group [81.4% (96/118), 43.2% (51/118) vs. 41.5% (49/118), 11.0% (13/118), respectively, P<0.05]. During follow-up, the improvements in scores of PASI, Itch Rating Scale, DLQI, and HAMA of the treatment group were significantly greater than those of the control group (P<0.01). The response rates of PASI 50 and 75 in the treatment group were significantly higher than those in the control group, respectively (both P<0.05). No obvious adverse reaction was found in either group., Conclusion: ZMTM combined with Western medicines showed a better therapeutic effect in the treatment of psoriasis vulgaris without obvious adverse reaction. Background: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is one of the common diseases in female urinary system diseases, and the incidence is increasing year by year. Moxibustion therapy, as a kind of acupuncture therapy, has been widely used in the clinical treatment of SUI, but its therapeutic effect and safety have not been scientifically and systematically evaluated. Therefore, the protocol of this systematic review we propose this time is to scientifically evaluate the effectiveness and safety of moxibustion in the treatment of female stress urinary incontinence (FSUI)., Methods: The following 8 electronic databases will be searched from establishment to December 2021: PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, VIP Database, Wanfang Database, China Biology Medicine disc. All randomized controlled trials of moxibustion in the treatment of FSUI will be searched in the above electronic databases. Two reviewers will independently complete research selection, data extraction, and research quality evaluation. After screening the studies, the quality of the included studies will be evaluated according to the quality standards specified in the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions (version 5.1.0). The primary outcome of included studies is the change from baseline in urine leakage measured by the 1-hour pad test. Secondary outcomes include: the short-form of the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire, the mean 72-hour urinary incontinence episode frequency, self-assessment of the patient's treatment effect, severity of urinary incontinence, and adverse events. Two reviewers will independently conduct study selection, data extraction, risk of bias assessment, and study quality assessment. Background: Low- and middle-income countries have a high prevalence of primary hypertension, but its treatment and control are often low. Heat-sensitive moxibustion (HSM), an innovative acupoint stimulation technique, may be effective for treating hypertension and thus used appropriately in primary healthcare. The objective of this study is to investigate whether HSM is effective and safe for the treatment of primary hypertension in the community., Methods: This study is a multicenter, pragmatic, randomized controlled trial (RCT) with patient-preference arms. Four hundred patients with primary hypertension from seven communities will be enrolled. Initially, the communities will be randomly assigned into two study clusters, one using compulsory randomization and the other allowing treatment selection by patient preferences. Then, patients in the compulsory randomization cluster will be randomized to receive HSM plus their original antihypertensive regimen (HSM group) or only their original antihypertensive regimen (control group) for 6 months. Patients in the patient preference cluster may choose to receive HSM or control if they have a preference; otherwise, patients will be randomly assigned. The primary outcome is the change in systolic blood pressure from baseline; secondary outcomes include change in diastolic blood pressure, dosage of antihypertensive drugs, quality of life (QoL), severity of hypertensive symptoms, and incidence of cardiovascular events. Patient compliance with the HSM regimen, the cost-effectiveness ratio, and safety outcomes will also be evaluated. Outcome data will be collected at 6 monthly visits., Discussion: This trial will provide important evidence regarding HSM as a technique for primary hypertension in primary healthcare settings. Background: Pressure injury is an important global health issue characterized by the high incidence, rapid progression, and difficult healing. How to perform timely treatment and care have been the current focus and challenge for health care professionals. Moxibustion can improve skin microcirculation, promote blood circulation, activate tissue cells, inhibit, and kill bacteria on the wounded surface, thus promoting wound healing. However, the clinically reported efficacy of moxibustion in the treatment of pressure injuries varies a lot and lacks evidence-based medical evidence. Therefore, this meta-analysis aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of moxibustion on the treatment of pressure injuries., Methods: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) reporting the moxibustion for pressure injury published before January 2022 will be searched in online databases, including the Chinese Scientific Journal Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database, Wanfang Database, China Biomedical Literature Database, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Web of Science. References of eligible literatures will be manually reviewed. Background: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is the most common chronic neurological complication. It is the main cause of disability in diabetes mellitus (DM) patients and seriously affects the quality of life of patients. Pharmacological treatments always associate with limited efficacy and adverse effects. Moxibustion has been recommended to treat DPN as an adjuvant therapy to conventional medical treatment to accelerate alleviation of the symptoms of DPN. 10.6-μm laser moxibustion (LM), whose wavelength is close to the peak of infrared radiation spectrum of the traditional moxibustion as well as human acupoints, produces the thermal effect similar with moxibustion but with no smoke or smell. The purpose of this sham controlled clinical trial is to determine the effect and safety of 10.6-μm LM as adjuvant therapy in patients with DPN., Methods: This is a protocol for a randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled trial. One hundred fourteen patients meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria will be recruited and randomly assigned to the LM group or the sham LM group with a 1:1 allocation ratio. Patients in both groups will receive a basic integrated treatment of Chinese and Western medicine and a total of 12 sessions of true or sham LM treatments over 4 weeks with 3 sessions a week. The primary outcome is nerve conduction velocity (NCV), and the secondary outcomes include Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument (MNSI) scores, Diabetes-Specific Quality of Life (DSQL) scores, blood rheology parameters, and assessments of safety and blinding. Background: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is one of the most common complications of diabetes mellitus. The main clinical manifestations of DPN include pain, numbness, paraesthesia, and weakness of the lower limbs which often leads to diabetic foot ulceration, eventually resulting in amputation. Based on Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, moxibustion has a great effect on treating and preventing DPN. However, randomized clinical trials done to evaluate the efficacy of this treatment are still lacking. Hence, this study is carried out to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of moxibustion therapy on diabetic peripheral neuropathy., Methods: This study will be a pilot, interventional, randomized, 2-armed, parallel, singled-masked, controlled trial. A total of 40 diabetes mellitus patients with peripheral neuropathy will be recruited and assigned randomly into 2 groups (moxibustion group and waiting group) at a 1:1 ratio. This trial consists of an 8-week intervention period and a 4-week follow-up period. During the intervention period, the moxibustion group will take 3 moxibustion sessions per week, whereas no intervention will be done on the waiting group to act as the control group. The outcome will be assessed by an outcome assessor who is unaware of the group assignment. The primary outcome will be pain assessment measured with algometry, Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs pain scale, visual analogue scale, and neuropathy pain scale. Objective: To observe the clinical effect of penetrating moxibustion on migraine without aura (MO) patients., Methods: Totally 60 MO patients from the Acupuncture Clinic of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Henan University of Chinese Medicine were collected from November 2015 to February 2017. All patients were assigned to a treatment group and a control group using a random number table, 30 cases in each group. The treatment group was treated with penetrating moxibustion, and the control group was treated with mild moxibustion, thrice a week for 4 consecutive weeks. The total effective rate, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) scores, headache intensity, and Migraine Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire (MSQ) scores of patients after treatment were compared between the two groups. The moxibustion sensation and reaction after moxibustion were observed, and the adverse reactions were evaluated. All patients were followed up at 4 and 16 weeks after treatment., Results: The total effective rate of the treatment group was significantly higher than that of the control group (93.33% vs. 80.00%, P<0.05). The improvement of VAS scores, headache intensity, and the role restrictive and role preventive scores in MSQ in the treatment group was better than those in the control group (P<0.05). The person-time of moxibustion sensations of itching, numbness and cold as well as flushing and sweating after moxibustion in the treatment group was all significantly higher than that in the control group (P<0.01). There was no significant difference in safety evaluation between the two groups (P>0.05)., Conclusions: Penetrating moxibustion can significantly relieve pain and improve quality of life of MO patients. Background: Primary liver cancer (PLC) is one of the most common malignant tumors in the world, and its incidence and fatality rate are increasing year by year. Due to the large population base in China, the aging population is severely affected by environmental pollution, eating habits, and unhealthy lifestyles. And many other influences have caused the number of new PLC cases and deaths in China to rank first in the world. Acupuncture combined with external application of Chinese medicine to treat PLC is currently one of the commonly used treatments in China. However, this combined treatment still lacks evidence-based medicine support. As of September 15, 2021, there are no restrictions on search language, publication time, and publication status. We will use the following medical keywords to search, including: "acupuncture", "external application of traditional Chinese medicine", and "primary liver cancer". Background: Chronic heart failure (CHF) is the final result of various cardiovascular diseases, with high morbidity and high mortality, which seriously threaten people's health and quality of life. It has become a public health problem in the world. There is currently no specific treatment. Moxibustion, as a complementary and replacement therapy, has advantages in the treatment of chronic heart failure, but it lacks standard clinical studies to verify it. Therefore, the purpose of this randomized controlled trial is to evaluate the effect of moxibustion on the heart function and quality of life of patients with CHF., Methods: This is a prospective randomized controlled trial to study the effect of moxibustion on the heart function and quality of life of patients with CHF. This is approved by the clinical research ethics committee of our hospital. Patients were randomly divided into observation group (moxibustion combined with Western medicine treatment group) or control group (conventional Western medicine treatment group). Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is one of the most common chronic symptoms experienced by cancer patients. As moxibustion is a popular traditional therapy for managing fatigue, it can be an alternative strategy to treat CRF as well. Therefore, we rigorously designed a full-scale, multicenter, assessor-blinded, randomized controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of moxibustion treatment for CRF. Ninety-six subjects suffering from CRF were recruited and randomly assigned to moxibustion group, sham moxibustion group, or usual care group. Both the moxibustion group and the sham group received moxibustion treatment for 8 weeks and the usual care group did not. Brief fatigue inventory (BFI) score and Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Fatigue score were used to assess CRF at baseline and weeks 5, 9, and 13. Questionnaires for the assessment of cognitive impairment, quality of life, and Cold-Heat and Deficiency-Excess patterns were also evaluated. BFI scores significantly decreased in moxibustion group compared to the usual care group (mean difference of -1.92, p < 0.001 at week 9 and mean difference of -2.36, p < 0.001 at week 13). Although the sham group also showed significant improvement during the treatment period, only the moxibustion group showed improvement after 4 weeks of follow-up period (mean difference of -1.06, p < 0.001). There were no serious adverse events. Our findings confirmed the efficacy and safety of moxibustion for CRF compared to usual care. Background: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is one of the most disabling and destructive neurological diseases. Neurogenic bladder dysfunction (NBD) is one of the serious complications after SCI, 80% of patients after SCI will have neurogenic bladder symptoms. NBD after SCI may lead to urinary retention, urinary incontinence, and urinary tract infection. In severe cases, it can lead to renal failure or even death. NBD after SCI not only seriously affects the patient's quality of life but also physical and mental health. NBD after SCI is a social and medical problem. Background: Parkinson disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disease among middle-aged and elderly people. Background: Osteonecrosis of the femeral head (ONFH) occurs predominantly in young- and middle-aged people, and the disability rate is high in the late stage of the disease and most patients have to undergo total hip replacement. Clinically, increasing attention is paid to intervening early and middle-stage ONFH so as to delay its progress. Acupuncture and moxibustion (AM) is a unique method for treating ONFH in China. This study aims to summarize the advantages of AM for the treatment of ONFH., Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted on the database with languages of English and Chinese. The medical subject titles used are "Osteonecrosis of the femoral head" and "acupuncture and moxibustion." Related words in the title or abstract including but were not limited to "necrosis of the femoral head," "avascular necrosis of the femoral head," "ischemic necrosis of the femoral head," "caput femoris necrosis," "bone paralysis," "bone erosion," and "bone atrophy.", Results: Nine randomized controlled trials were identified in this meta-analysis that included 630 subjects. Meta-analysis showed that the trial group that treated with conventional therapy combined with AM had a higher effective rate (Z = 2.27 P = 0.02) and excellent and good rate (Z = 4.85 P < 0.00001) and Harris hip function score (HHS) (Z = 2.31 P = 0.02) and lower incidence of related adverse reactions during treatment (Z = 2.82 P = 0.005) compared with the control group that treated with conventional therapy alone., Conclusions: AM for early and middle-stage ONFH is an effective and relatively safe intervention, which can improve the effective rate and excellent and good rate and HHS, and reduce the adverse reaction rate. Background: Ankylosing spondylitis is a recurrent autoimmune disease, which has a high disability rate and seriously affects patients' daily life. Conventional treatment cannot effectively solve the clinical problems of patients, and long-term medication is accompanied by adverse reactions. The evidence shows that warming needle moxibustion has advantages in the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis, but there is still a lack of clinical studies on warm acupuncture alone and long-term follow-up., Methods: This is a prospective randomized controlled trial to study the efficacy and safety of needle warming through moxibustion in the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis. Background: The pathogenesis of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is not clear. The main purpose of treatment is to improve autoimmune function and relieve fatigue symptoms. Moxibustion is often used to treat diseases caused by low autoimmunity, especially in relieving fatigue symptoms. It is a superior therapy for CFS in traditional Chinese medicine. At present, there is a lack of the high level clinical evidence to support the moxibustion in the treatment of CFS, so this study will systematically review and analyze the currently available randomized controlled trials to evaluate the efficacy and safety of moxibustion in the treatment of CFS., Methods: We will systematically search PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane library, Sinomed, CNKI, VIP, and Wanfang Database, ClinicalTrials.gov and Chinese Clinical Trial Registry will also be searched. The time range for the search will be from database activation to March 31, 2021. The randomized controlled trials (RCTs) associated with moxibustion for CFS will be included, regardless of language.We will use the standard proposed in Cochrane Handbook 5.1.0 to assess the bias risk of a single RCT. The main outcome index of the study is Fatigue Assessment Instrument (FAI), secondary outcome indexes will include Fatigue Scale -14 (FS-14), Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), natural killer (NK) cells, interleukin- 2 (IL-2), T lymphocyte subsets (CD4+, CD8+), cure rate, total efficiency and adverse reactions. The random effect model meta was used to analyze the effect data of a single RCT. Heterogeneity will be measured by Cochran Q test and I-squared statistics. We will use 2 subgroup analyses to explore the source of heterogeneity. RCTs with high bias risk was excluded and adjustment effect model was used for sensitivity analysis to test the robustness of the meta-analysis results. Background: Ankylosing spondylitis is a complex and progressive autoimmune inflammatory disease with a worldwide prevalence ranging up to 0.9%. Several systematic reviews and meta-analyses of traditional Chinese medicine alternative therapies, such as acupuncture or moxibustion, have demonstrated the effectiveness of moxibustion and acupuncture in the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis. However, there is no relevant literature to comprehensively evaluate the evidence. The purpose of this overview is to synthesize and evaluate the reliability of evidence generated in the systematic review (SR) and meta-analysis of moxibustion and acupuncture as a primary or complementary therapy for patients with ankylosing spondylitis., Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese VIP Information, Wanfang Database, and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database were searched for systematic reviews and meta-analysis that review the efficacy of acupuncture or moxibustion as the primary treatment for patients with Ankylosing Spondylitis. Background: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a major public health issue because it causes pain and functional limitation in patients. Many studies have reported that moxibustion, a treatment in traditional Chinese medicine, is effective in treating KOA. The aim of this protocol is to develop a standard in advance for synthesize and assess the efficacy and safety of thunder-fire moxibustion for KOA from these randomized controlled trial., Methods: The 2 commentators will screen 7 databases (PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese VIP Information, Wanfang Database, and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database) for randomized controlled trials that can be included from the time the database is built up until publication in December 2020. The original study that randomized control trials of thunder-fire moxibustion for patients with KOA will be selected and is not limited by country or language. In addition, researches in progress, the reference lists, and the citation lists of identified publications will be retrieved similarly. Background: De Quervain's tenosynovitis is an overuse disease that involves a thickening of the abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis brevis tendons. Evidence shows that acupuncture and moxibustion (AM) could remarkably relieve the pain of De Quervain's tenosynovitis patients. The aim of this protocol is to determine the efficacy and safety of AM for treating De Quervain's tenosynovitis., Methods: Several online databases including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Chinese Biomedical Literatures Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, WangFang Database, Chinese Scientific Journal Database will be searched from their establishment to July 1, 2020. We will include all randomized controlled trials using AM as the method for treating De Quervain's tenosynovitis, regardless of blinding or publication types. The selection of studies, data extraction and the assessment of the studies quality will be conducted by 2 reviewers separately. When there is sufficient available data for meta-analysis, we will use the RevMan V.5.3 statistical software for data synthesis. Background: COVID-9 has become a global pandemic with severe health issues around the world. However, there is still no effective drug to treat the disease, and many studies have shown that moxibustion plays a positive role in adjuvant treatment of COVID-19. Therefore, this meta-analysis is designed to evaluate the efficacy of moxibustion for COVID-19., Methods: The relevant randomized controlled trials will be systematically retrieved from the electronic database, including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Clinical Trials Database, Web of Science, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure, without restrictions on publication status and language. Two reviewers will independently review all included studies and assess the risk of bias. Two reviewers will independently extract data from the included studies based on a pre-designed standardized form. Any disagreements will be resolved by consensus. Background: At present, the effect of western-medicine (WM) therapy to treat diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is limited. We aim to systematically assess the efficacy and safety of moxibustion in treating DPN, following PRISMA guidelines., Methods: Eight electronic databases were searched to acquire information on eligible trials published from inception to June 1, 2019. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) applying moxibustion therapy with a minimum of 14-days treatment duration for DPN patients compared with placebo, no intervention, or conventional WM interventions. The primary outcomes in our study include the sensory-nerve conduction velocity (SNCV) and motor-nerve conduction velocity (MNCV). We used the Cochrane Collaboration Risk of Bias tool to assess the methodological quality of eligible RCTs. Statistical analyses were conducted using Review Manager 5.3. Risk ratios (RR) and mean differences (MD) were calculated with a 95% confidence interval (CI). The χ test was applied to assess the heterogeneity., Results: In total, 11 RCTs were included that involved 927 DPN patients. Compared with the control group, there was an increase in median MNCV (MD = 6.26, 95% CI 2.64-9.89, Z = 3.39, P = .0007) and peroneal MNCV (MD = 6.45, 95% CI 5.30-7.61, P < .00001). There was also an increase in median SNCV (MD = 6.64, 95% CI 3.25-10.03, P = .0001) and peroneal SNCV (MD = 3. 57, 95% CI 2.06-5.09, Z = 4.63, P < .00001) in the treatment groups. The treatment groups receiving moxibustion therapy indicated a more significant improvement in total effectiveness rate (RR = 0.25, 95% CI 0.18-0.37, Z = 7.16, P < .00001). Toronto Clinical Scoring System indicated a significant decrease in the treatment groups (MD = -2.12, 95% CI -2.82 to 1.43, P < .00001). Only 1 study reported that treatment groups experienced no adverse reactions. The other 10 studies did not mention adverse events., Conclusions: Moxibustion therapy may be an effective and safe option for DPN patients but needs to be verified in further rigorous studies.

Background: Although the efficacy of antihypertensive drugs has been well established for primary hypertension, their effectiveness is always limited by side effects and poor compliance. Heat-sensitive moxibustion is an innovative acupoint stimulation therapy that is promising as a community health care intervention for hypertension., Aims: This study aims to evaluate the pragmatic effectiveness and safety of heat-sensitive moxibustion self-administration by patients in the community with primary hypertension., Methods: This study will adopt a multi-center, pragmatic, nonrandomized design. Six hundred patients with primary hypertension will be recruited from 4 communities. Each patient will choose to either receive heat-sensitive moxibustion self-administration + original antihypertensive drugs or maintain their original antihypertensive drugs without heat-sensitive moxibustion for 1 year., Expected Outcomes: The primary outcome will be changes in systolic and diastolic blood pressures and the percentage changes in the doses of antihypertensive drugs. The secondary outcomes will be changes in quality of life assessed by a validated patient-reported outcome scale and the levels of fasting blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin, total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, urinary albumin, and serum creatinine. The proportion of patients with poor compliance with the heat-sensitive moxibustion regimen will also be evaluated as a secondary outcome. The safety of heat-sensitive moxibustion will be considered by analyzing the incidence of all and serious adverse events and their correlation with heat-sensitive moxibustion., Discussion: The findings of this study will provide pragmatic evidence for heat-sensitive moxibustion self-administration in patients in the community with primary hypertension and may also establish an ethical basis for further randomized controlled trials., Trial Registration: The protocol of this trial was registered in ClinicalTrials.gov at May 11, 2020 (No. NCT04381520).

Background: Scapulohumeral periarthritis (SP) is a very common painful shoulder disorder. Several systematic reviews (SRs) and meta-analyses have reported the effectiveness of acupuncture for patients with SP. However, the evidence has not been systematically synthesized. This overview aims to map, synthesize, and assess the reliability of evidence generated from these SRs and meta-analyses of acupuncture for SP., Methods: We will electronically search the following databases for literature, regardless of publication status and language: the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL); PubMed; EMBASE; China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI); Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM); Chinese Scientific Journal Database (VIPdatabase); and Wan-Fang Database. In order to ensure the comprehensiveness and accuracy of the literature retrieval, we will combine the Suggestions of evidence-based medicine experts with the actual situation in the literature retrieval process to formulate the retrieval strategy, and make corresponding records to find the most appropriate retrieval strategy. The reference lists and the citation lists of studies meeting the inclusion criteria and relevant SRs will also be searched to identify further studies for inclusion. Before this review completed, the two reviewers will conduct the searching once again to ensure the latest studies could be included., Ethics and Dissemination: Ethical approval is not required for overviews.
