6. SIRT1/NOX1 pathway mediated ameliorative effects of rosmarinic acid in folic acid-induced renal injury

Background and purpose: Renal injury is a serious disorder that can be caused by some diseases or agents. Rosmarinic acid (RA) is a natural and safe compound with powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In this study, the ameliorative effects of RA were assayed in folic acid (FA)-induced renal injury by involving the SIRT1/NOX1 pathway. Experimental approach: Thirty-six male C57/BL6 mice were divided into 6 groups (n = 6) including control, vehicle, FA, RA, FA + RA 50, and FA + RA 100. After 10 days, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, and oxidative stress were measured. The expression of SIRT1 and NOX1 proteins was evaluated by western blot. Also, histopathological alterations were assayed by H&E and PAS staining methods. Findings/Results: BUN and creatinine were significantly higher in the FA group compared to the control group; however, their levels decreased after RA treatment in both doses. A significant decrease was observed in swelling, necrosis, and desquamation of tubular epithelial cells in the FA + RA 50 and FA + RA 100 groups compared to the FA group. RA in the animals receiving FA increased SIRT1 expression and the levels of GSH and SOD compared to the FA group. RA in the animals receiving FA showed a significant decrease in NOX1 expression and MDA level compared to the FA group. Conclusion and implications: The findings declared that the administration of RA has positive effects against renal damage induced by FA. The effect might result from involvement in the SIRT1/NOX1 pathway and thereby attenuation of oxidative stress.

7. Antimicrobial effect of Viola odorata extract with or without zinc oxide nanoparticles on Streptococcus mutans

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy of Viola odorata extract, with or without the addition of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), against Streptococcus mutans.Methods: Two series of V. odorata hydroalcoholic extracts were prepared at concentrations of 25, 50, 100, and 200 mg/ml. Five hundred ppm ZnO NPs were added to 500 ml of the V. odorata extracts in half of the samples. The antibacterial activity of the extracts was then tested using the agar well diffusion method against S. mutans, and the inhibition zones were determined. The control groups were 0.2% chlorhexidine and Salvadora persica mouthwashes. Statistical analysis was performed using an independent-sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Duncan's post-hoc test (α=0.05).Results: Adding ZnO NPs significantly improved the inhibition zone of V. odorata extract at all concentrations (P < 0.05). The largest inhibition zone was observed in the 0.2% chlorhexidine mouthwash, significantly greater than all other groups (P < 0.001). The inhibition diameter for S. persica mouthwash was significantly greater than that of all the V. odorata extracts (P < 0.001), except for the group containing 200 mg/ml extract with ZnO NPs (P > 0.05).Conclusions: Adding 500 ppm ZnO NPs enhanced the antibacterial activity of the V. odorata extract. The antibacterial effect of the 200 mg/ml V. odorata extract combined with ZnO NPs was comparable to that of S. persica mouthwash against S. mutans. Given the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of the V. odorata extract, this formulated mouthwash shows potential for improving patients' oral health.

9. 2D material-based mode confinement engineering in electro-optic modulators

The ability to modulate light using 2-dimensional (2D) materials is fundamentally challenged by their small optical cross-section leading to miniscule modal confinements in diffraction-limited photonics despite intrinsically high electro-optic absorption modulation (EAM) potential given by their strong exciton binding energies. However the inherent polarization anisotropy in 2D-materials and device tradeoffs lead to additional requirements with respect to electric field directions and modal confinement. A detailed relationship between modal confinement factor and obtainable modulation strength including definitions on bounding limits are outstanding. Here we show that the modal confinement factor is a key parameter determining both the modulation strength and the modulator extinction ratio-to-insertion loss metric. We show that the modal confinement and hence the modulation strength of a single-layer modulated 2D material in a plasmonically confined mode is able to improve by more than 10x compared to diffraction-limited modes. Combined with the strong-index modulation of graphene the modulation strength can be more than 2-orders of magnitude higher compared to Silicon-based EAMs. Furthermore modal confinement was found to be synergistic with performance optimization via enhanced light-matter-interactions. These results show that there is room for scaling 2D material EAMs with respect to modal engineering towards realizing synergistic designs leading to high-performance modulators.

The growing prevalence of near-term intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) systems has brought forth a heightened focus on the issue of circuit reliability. Several quantum computing activities, such as circuit design and multi-qubit mapping, are focused on enhancing reliability via the use of different optimization techniques. The optimization of quantum classical circuits has been the subject of substantial research, with a focus on techniques such as ancilla-qubit reuse and tactics aimed at minimizing circuit size and depth. Nevertheless, the reliability of bigger and more complex circuits remains a difficulty due to potential failures or the need for time-consuming compilation processes, despite the use of modern optimization strategies. This study presents a revolutionary Depth Control (DC) methodology that involves slicing and lowering the depth of conventional circuits. This strategy aims to improve the reliability and decrease the mapping costs associated with quantum hardware. DC provides reliable outcomes for circuits of indefinite size on any Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) system. The experimental findings demonstrate that the use of DC leads to a substantial improvement in the Probability of Success Threshold (PST), with an average increase of 11x compared to non-DC baselines. Furthermore, DC exhibits a notable superiority over the next best outcome by ensuring accurate outputs with a considerable margin. In addition, the utilization of Design Compiler (DC) enables the execution of mapping and routing optimizations inside a polynomial-time complexity, which represents an advancement compared to previously suggested methods that need exponential time.

11. Indium-Tin-Oxide for High-performance Electro-optic Modulation

Advances in opto-electronics are often led by discovery and development of materials featuring unique properties. Recently the material class of transparent conductive oxides (TCO) has attracted attention for active photonic devices on-chip. In particular Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) is found to have refractive index changes on the order of unity. This property makes it possible to achieve electro-optic modulation of sub-wavelength device scales, when thin ITO films are interfaced with optical light confinement techniques such as found in plasmonics; optical modes are compressed to nanometer scale to create strong light-matter-interactions. Here we review efforts towards utilizing this novel material for high-performance and ultra-compact modulation. While high performance metrics are achieved experimentally, there are open questions pertaining the permittivity modulation mechanism of ITO. Furthermore, we show that a footprint-saving waveguide inline cavity can enhance obtainable extinction-ratio to insertion-loss ratios by about one order of magnitude over non-cavity based version. Moreover, we offer a speed analysis that shows that the device is resistance limited, but not capacitance or drift-carrier limited. Interestingly, two bias options exist for ITO and we find that a side-connection enables devices that should in principle enable several hundred of GHz fast devices, using our routinely achievable ITO film resistivities. Finally, we offer a brief discuss about footprint savings of compact ITO modulators showing a 3-orders of magnitude smaller footprint over Silicon photonic MZI-based modulators., Comment: 36 pages, 14 figures

12. An electrically-driven Carbon nanotube-based plasmonic laser on Silicon

Photonic signal processing requires efficient on-chip light sources with higher modulation bandwidths. Todays conventional fastest semiconductor diode lasers exhibit modulation speeds only on the order of a few tens of GHz due to gain compression effects and parasitic electrical capacitances. Here we theoretically show an electrically-driven Carbon nanotube (CNT)-based laser utilizing strong light-matter-interaction via monolithic integration into Silicon photonic crystal nanobeam (PCNB) cavities. The laser is formed by single-walled CNTs inside a combo-cavity consisting of both a plasmonic metal-oxide-semiconductor hybrid mode embedded in the one dimensional PCNB cavity. The emission originates from interband recombinations of electrostatically-doped nanotubes depending on the tubes chirality towards matching the C-band. Our simulation results show that the laser operates at telecom frequencies resulting in a power output > 3 (100) uW and > 100 (1000)GHz modulation speed at 1x (10x) threshold. Such monolithic integration schemes provide an alternative promising approach for light source in future photonics integrated circuits., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Van der Waals (vdWs) heterostructures assembled by stacking 2D crystal layers have proven to be a new material platform for high-performance optoelectronic applications such as thin film transistors, photodetectors, and emitters. Here, we demonstrate a novel device with strain tuning capabilities using MoS2/Sb2Te3 vdWs p-n heterojunction devices designed for photodetection in the visible to near-infrared spectrum. The heterojunction devices exhibit remarkable characteristics, such as a low dark current in the range of a few picoamperes and a high photoresponsivity of 0.12 A/W. Furthermore, the proposed devices exhibit exceptional tunability when subjected to a compressive strain of up to 0.3%. By introducing strain at the interface of the heterojunction, the materials bandgap is affected resulting in a significant change in the band structure of the heterojunction. This leads to a change in the detectors optical absorption characteristics improving the responsivity of the device. The proposed strain-induced engineering of the electronic and optical properties of the stacked 2D crystal materials allows tuning of the optoelectronic performance of vdWs devices for high-performance and low-power consumption applications for applications like wearable sensors and flexible electro-optic circuits., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

14. Quantum Circuit Resizing

Existing quantum systems provide very limited physical qubit counts, trying to execute a quantum algorithm/circuit on them that have a higher number of logical qubits than physically available lead to a compile-time error. Given that it is unrealistic to expect existing quantum systems to provide, in near future, sufficient number of qubits that can accommodate large circuit, there is a pressing need to explore strategies that can somehow execute large circuits on small systems. In this paper, first, we perform an analysis to identify the qubits that are most suitable for circuit resizing. Our results reveal that, in most quantum programs, there exist qubits that can be reused mid-program to serially/sequentially execute the circuit employing fewer qubits. Motivated by this observation, we design, implement and evaluate a compiler-based approach that i) identifies the qubits that can be most beneficial for serial circuit execution; ii) selects those qubits to reuse at each step of execution for size minimization of the circuit; and iii) minimizes Middle Measurement (MM) delays due to impractical implementation of shots to improve the circuit reliability. Furthermore, since our approach intends to execute the circuits sequentially, the crosstalk errors can also be optimized as a result of the reduced number of concurrent gates. The experimental results indicate that our proposed approach can (i) execute large circuits that initially cannot fit into small circuits, on small quantum hardware, and (ii) can significantly improve the PST of the results by 2.1X when both original and our serialized programs can fit into the target quantum hardware., Comment: We recently find out about two concurrent works arXiv:2210.08039, arXiv:2211.01925, we add a disclaimer section, and we submitted the version (August 1st version) that predate them by more than a month submitted to HPCA (and unfortunately rejected), we ignored the new updates to it, as of this submission

17. Hashing for Secure Optical Information Compression in a Heterogeneous Convolutional Neural Network

In the recent years, heterogeneous machine learning accelerators have become of significant interest in science, engineering and industry. The major processing speed bottlenecks in these platforms come from (a) an electronic data interconnect; (b) an electro-optical interface update rate. In this light, information compression implemented in native to incoming data optical domain could mitigate both problems mentioned above by reducing the demand on data throughput at the camera side and beyond. In this paper we present an optical hashing and compression scheme that is based on SWIFFT - a post-quantum hashing family of algorithms. High degree optical hardware-to-algorithm homomorphism allows to optimally harvest well-understood potential of free-space processing: innate parallelism, low latency tensor by-element multiplication and Fourier transform. The algorithm can provide several orders of magnitude increase in processing speed by replacing slow high-resolution CMOS cameras with ultra fast and signal-triggered CMOS detector arrays. Additionally, the information acquired in this way will require much lower transmission throughput, less \emph{in silico} processing power, storage, and will be pre-hashed facilitating cheap optical information security. This technology has a potential to allow heterogeneous convolutional 4f classifiers get closer in performance to their fully electronic counterparts.

Solving mathematical equations faster and more efficiently has been a Holy Grail for centuries for scientists and engineers across all disciplines. While electronic digital circuits have revolutionized equation solving in recent decades, it has become apparent that performance gains from brute-force approaches of compute-solvers are quickly saturating over time. Instead, paradigms that leverage the universes natural tendency to minimize a systems free energy, such as annealers or Ising Machines, are being sought after due to favorable complexity scaling. Here we introduce a programmable analog solver leveraging the mathematical formal equivalence between Maxwells equations and photonic circuitry. It features a mesh network of nanophotonic beams to find solutions to partial differential equations. As an example, we designed, fabricated, and demonstrated a novel application-specific photonic integrated circuit comprised of electro-optically reconfigurable nodes, and experimentally validated 90% accuracy with respect to a commercial solver. Finally, we tested this photonic integrated chip performance by simulating thermal diffusion on a spacecrafts heat shield during re-entry to a planets atmosphere. The programmable light-circuitry presented herein offers a facile route for solving complex problems and thus will have profound potential applications across many scientific and engineering fields.

19. Self-Powered Broadband Photodetector Based on MoS2/Sb2Te3 Heterojunctions: A promising approach for highly sensitive detection

Topological insulators have shown great potential for future optoelectronic technology due to their extraordinary optical and electrical properties. Photodetectors, as one of the most widely used optoelectronic devices, are crucial for sensing, imaging, communication, and optical computing systems to convert optical signals to electrical signals. Here we experimentally show a novel combination of topological insulators (TIs) and transition metal chalcogenides (TMDs) based self-powered photodetectors with ultra-low dark current and high sensitivity. The photodetector formed by a MoS2/Sb2Te3 heterogeneous junction exhibits a low dark current of 2.4 pA at zero bias and 1.2 nA at 1V. It shows a high photoresponsivity of > 150 mA W-1 at zero bias and rectification of 3 times at an externally applied bias voltage of 1V. The excellent performance of the proposed photodetector with its innovative material combination of TMDs and TIs paves the way for the development of novel high-performance optoelectronic devices. The TIs/TMDs transfer used to form the heterojunction is simple to incorporate into on-chip waveguide systems, enabling future applications on highly integrated photonic circuits., Comment: 8 Pages, 3 figures

Photonic Random-Access Memories (P-RAM) are an essential component for the on-chip non-von Neumann photonic computing by eliminating optoelectronic conversion losses in data links. Emerging Phase Change Materials (PCMs) have been showed multilevel memory capability, but demonstrations still yield relatively high optical loss and require cumbersome WRITE-ERASE approaches increasing power consumption and system package challenges. Here we demonstrate a multi-state electrically-programmed low-loss non-volatile photonic memory based on a broadband transparent phase change material (Ge2Sb2Se5, GSSe) with ultra-low absorption in the amorphous state. A zero-static-power and electrically-programmed multi-bit P-RAM is demonstrated on a silicon-on-insulator platform, featuring efficient amplitude modulation up to 0.2 dB/{\mu}m and an ultra-low insertion loss of total 0.12 dB for a 4-bit memory showing a 100x improved signal to loss ratio compared to other phase-change-materials based photonic memories. We further optimize the positioning of dual micro-heaters validating performance tradeoffs. Experimentally we demonstrate a half-a million cyclability test showcasing the robust approach of this material and device. Low-loss photonic retention-of-state adds a key feature for photonic functional and programmable circuits impacting many applications including neural networks, LiDAR, and sensors for example.

23. Disciplinary Culture and Effective Teaching: A Cultural Anthropological Study

During the last couple of decades, many researchers have been trying to explicate "effective teaching" in higher education. As a result, when one searches the term, a vast amount of papers and research reports pop up in the literature, involving lists of attributes and competencies of effective teachers. But the impressive point is that "effectiveness" has been viewed mostly from a technical vantage point and disciplinary differences have not received proportionate attention. At the same time, some sociologists of science began to view disciplines as tribes and territories who own their exclusive norms, rituals, and values. Hence, this research aims at investigating effective teaching in higher education within the framework of disciplinary culture. Methodologically, the research may be deemed as interpretive ethnography as it aims at representing emically how members of disciplinary cultures perceive and interpret effective teaching. Hence, based on Tony Becher classification of disciplines into civil and rural, two postgraduate classes were selected, namely from Pure Mathematics (involving 15 students to represent civil disciplines) and Education Studies (involving 18 students to represent rural disciplines). To collect data, the researcher deployed non-participant observation for a full semester and informal interviews were also conducted at regular intervals. The field notes and interview protocols were analyzed thematically to produce meaningful categories for results representation. As credibility was of great concern in the research, three strategies were used for this purpose namely member check, peer debriefing and prolonged engagement. Based on the interpretations, members of rural disciplines evaluate teaching as effective when it focuses on classic texts, cares about human and social issues, approaches laymen jargons, emphasizes understanding, appreciates variety of teaching strategies and learning styles, holds a critical stance towards cultural issues, and takes on a lenient approach in marking. On the other side, members of civil disciplines evaluate teaching as effective when it focuses on updated resources, is content-oriented, approaches professional terminology, emphasizes practicality, and takes on a tough stance on marking.

Electro-optic modulators provide a key function in optical transceivers and increasingly in photonic programmable Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) for machine learning and signal processing. However, both foundry ready silicon based modulators and conventional material based devices utilizing Lithium niobate fall short in simultaneously providing high chip packaging density and fast speed. Current driven ITO based modulators have the potential to achieve both enabled by efficient light matter interactions. Here, we introduce micrometer compact Mach Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) based modulators capable of exceeding 100 GHz switching rates. Integrating ITO thin films atop a photonic waveguide, spectrally broadband, and compact MZI phase shifter. Remarkably, this allows integrating more than 3500 of these modulators within the same chip area as only one single silicon MZI modulator. The modulator design introduced here features a holistic photonic, electronic, and RF-based optimization and includes an asymmetric MZI tuning step to optimize the Extinction Ratio (ER) to Insertion Loss (IL) and dielectric thickness sweep to balance the tradeoffs between ER and speed. Driven by CMOS compatible bias voltage levels, this device is the first to address next generation modulator demands for processors of the machine intelligence revolution, in addition to the edge and cloud computing demands as well as optical transceivers alike., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

With the increasing need for large volumes of data processing, transport, and storage, optimizing the trade-off between high-speed and energy consumption in today's optoelectronic devices is getting increasingly difficult. Heterogeneous material integration into Silicon- and Nitride-based photonics has showed high-speed promise, albeit at the expense of millimeter- to centimeter-scale footprints. The hunt for an electro-optic modulator that combines high speed, energy efficiency, and compactness to support high component density on-chip continues. Using a double-layer graphene optical modulator integrated on a Silicon photonics platform, we are able to achieve 60 GHz speed (3 dB roll-off), micrometer compactness, and efficiency of 2.25 fJ/bit in this paper. The electro-optic response is boosted further by a vertical distributed-Bragg-reflector cavity, which reduces the driving voltage by about 40 times while maintaining a sufficient modulation depth (5.2 dB/V). Pulses of near-fault earthquakes are very effective in the seismic response of the Triple Friction Pendulum Isolator (TFPI). In previous studies, the effect of original bi-directional pulses components on the isolated tall buildings by TFPI was neglected. Also, the effect of changing the design parameters of TFPI on preventing seismic disaster in this type of building is unknown. For this reason, a 10 stories moment steel structure mounted on TFPI was designed. Then, the seven pairs of bidirectional near-fault earthquake records without and with removal pulses were applied to the isolated structure. The results show that the seismic responses on the base level decrease by reducing the velocity pulse amplitude (AP) and increasing the velocity pulse period (TP), also if the period of the isolators (TM) is being higher than TP, the seismic responses on the upper floors reduce. Moreover, Increasing the geometrical dimensions of the TFPI can significantly reduce the seismic effect of near-fault earthquake with pulses.

In the matter of inheritance division among nephews and nieces, most فقها (jurists) uphold the rule of "Tafadol" and consider the inheritance share of males to be twice that of females. However, according to Ayatollah Khouei's view, in the absence of a specific proof, one should refer to the principle of equality, and the arguments for the rule of "Tafadol" are not capable of being extended beyond their specific cases. The main question is what are the jurisprudential foundations of Ayatollah Khouei's view in this regard? Considering that no specific basis has been found for his view, an attempt has been made to argue based on Ayatollah Khouei's jurisprudential principles, such as the invalidity of consensus) based on a single hadith, the invalidity) and non-determinative nature) of practical fame, the invalidity of the narrations of the book "Fiqh al-Ridha" and "Da'a'im al-Islam", and the non-universality) of the rule of "Tafadol". In addition to rejecting the major premise of the validity) of consensus based on a single hadith, he also raises a minor premise objection and rejects the very existence of consensus in this matter.

Solving mathematical equations faster and more efficiently has been a Holy Grail for centuries for scientists and engineers across all disciplines. While electronic digital circuits have revolutionized equation solving in recent decades, it has become apparent that performance gains from brute-force approaches of compute-solvers are quickly saturating over time. Instead, paradigms that leverage the universes’ natural tendency to minimize a system’s free energy, such as annealers or Ising Machines, are being sought after due to favorable complexity scaling. Here, we introduce a programmable analog solver leveraging the formal mathematical equivalence between Maxwell’s equations and photonic circuitry. It features a mesh network of nanophotonic beams to find solutions to partial differential equations. As an example, we designed, fabricated, and demonstrated a novel application-specific photonic integrated circuit comprised of electro-optically reconfigurable nodes and experimentally validated 90 % accuracy with respect to a commercial solver. Finally, we tested this photonic integrated chip performance by simulating thermal diffusion on a spacecraft’s heat shield during re-entry to a planet’s atmosphere. The programmable light-circuitry presented herein offers a facile route for solving complex problems and thus will have profound potential applications across many scientific and engineering fields.

The basic pillar of therapeutic simulation is the cells that are provided to scientists to combine and create a simulated embryo. These cells are not capable of planting in the laboratory environment but must be provided by the applicant to the researchers to produce simulated embryo for extracting stem cells. One of the challenges of using the therapeutic simulation process is how scientists reach the above base cells. It also raises the necessity of extracting stem cells from the resulting embryo, the issue of the owners of the decision -making authority towards the embryo. Another challenge is the conscious consent of the cell owners and the role of satisfaction in the owners of the embryo. The evaluation in the present article indicates that non -identification or restriction of decision -making authority to their cell owners and encloses the transfer of basic cells to scientists based on purely kind -hearted donation, benefiting from this modern technology and its valuable achievements with limitations. It makes a lot. In contrast, recognizing cell owners' decision -making authority over those cells and accepting monetary mechanisms and predicting the possibility of paying for cell owners while considering the necessity of their consent in the transfer process, not only increases the motivations of cell donation to simulate therapy. It will also promote the increasing development of scientific processes related to therapeutic simulation, which will be the source of the discovery of the treatment of many illnesses.

Abstract Background and Aim Due to the concern about the side effects of chemical drugs and their ineffectiveness, the use of natural compounds as alternatives or complementary therapies has received increasing attention. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Nigella sativa oil on the outcome of missed abortion. Methods In this double‐blind clinical trial, 70 nulliparous pregnant women referred to Hajar Hospital and Imam Ali clinics of Shahrekord and had missed abortion before the 12‐week gestational age were selected and randomly divided into two interventions and control groups. The intervention group received 5 g of Nigella sativa oil alone daily for up to 3 days and the control group received a placebo. In case of nonresponse, 3 days after the last dose of medication or placebo, 800 μg of misoprostol (vaginal) were used. Data were analyzed by SPSS software. The chi‐square test, Fisher's exact test, independent t‐test and paired t‐test were used for analytical statistics. Background and Objectives: This study aims to investigate whether a relationship is observed between spiritual health and health literacy among female teenagers, especially in terms of their attitudes toward breast self-examination. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional survey. Using multi-stage cluster sampling, 600 female students in grades 10 and 11 were chosen. A standard health literacy questionnaire created by Montazeri et al. and a 20-item spiritual health questionnaire created by Paloutzian and Ellison were used. Data were analyzed using SPSS software, version 22. Results: Most respondents had moderate health literacy and spiritual health with a positive and significant correlation (r=0.32). Health literacy has also been linked to maternal education and lower social class affiliation. Spiritual health was shown to be the vital variable in explaining health literacy in the regression. Conclusion: The research results showed the importance of spiritual health in health literacy and attitude towards health and preventive behaviors. Policymakers should give much more importance to spiritual health, especially in existential and non-ritual religious forms, in designing preventive interventions.

Background and Objectives: Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis is a severe liver disease characterized by excess lipid accumulation (steatosis) and inflammation in the liver. Endoplasmic reticulum stress is considered one of the crucial factors in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis pathophysiology. Rosmarinic acid is a herbal medicine with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of rosmarinic acid on reducing the endoplasmic reticulum stress induced by nonalcoholic steatohepatitis in male Swiss-type mice. Methods: The study animals were grouped into four: Saline, rosmarinic acid, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis-rosmarinic acid. Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis was induced by a diet without methionine-choline for 8 weeks, and rosmarinic acid was injected intraperitoneally daily for 8 weeks in mice. After 8 weeks, the animals were killed, and their liver samples were obtained. Real-time PCR was used for molecular studies. Data analyses were performed by one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's post hoc test. Results: Findings of this study showed that rosmarinic acid alleviated mRNA levels of GRP78, IRE-1, and PERK while increasing the Apo B expression. Conclusion: The results suggest that rosmarinic acid ameliorates endoplasmic reticulum stress parameters, upregulates Apo B expression as a key factor in triglyceride exit from the liver, and thereby improves nonalcoholic steatohepatitis in male Swiss-type mice.

Background and Objectives: Melanoma is the most aggressive and fatal type of skin cancer caused by the uncontrolled proliferation of melanocytes. The ineffectiveness of existing therapies has encouraged researchers to use herbal medicines. Amygdalin is a natural cyanogenic glycoside that is found in fruits and seeds of different plants and has antiproliferative, antioxidant, and immune-regulating activities. In this study, we aim to evaluate the effect of amygdalin against murine melanoma cancer cell line and normal human fibroblast cells. Methods: The murine melanoma cancer cell line (B16F10) and human foreskin fibroblasts (HFF) cells were exposed to different concentrations of amygdalin and dacarbazine (a standard anticancer drug) for 24 and 48 hours. The half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of amygdalin was obtained using the MTT assay and analyzed in GraphPad Prism and Excel applications. Results: Amygdalin had a high cytotoxic effect on the melanoma cell line within 48 hours of exposure, which is comparable to the cytotoxicity of dacarbazine at the same time. Amygdalin had no cytotoxic effect on HFF cells, while dacarbazine caused a high toxicity on HFF cells. Conclusion: Amygdalin, by inhibiting the proliferation of cancer cells in a dose-dependent manner, may prevent the adverse effects of chemical drugs on healthy cells and can be an appropriate treatment option for melanoma.

Fluoride is currently accessible in various forms, including water, toothpaste, mouth rinses, and professional fluoride therapy at dental clinics. A body of data supports the use of systemic and topical fluoride from various sources to prevent dental caries. Fluoride ions are absorbed by the enamel before tooth eruption and produce fluorohydroxyapatite, which is more resistant to acid attack than hydroxyapatite crystals [1]. Fluoride ions also aid in the early caries lesion remineralization process. As a result of the two mechanisms outlined above, fluoride strengthens enamel teeth against organic acids and dental caries.

44. Utilization of Fiber Obtained from Barley Malt Pulp as a Fat Substitute in the Production of Low Fat Mayonnaise

Introduction Introduction: Mayonnaise is one types of sauces that has always been loved and preferred by consumers because of its unique texture and taste. Sauce is a semi-solid or liquid food ingredients that consists of emulsifying edible vegetable oils (at least 66%) in a liquid phase including vinegar, water, lemon juice, and egg yolk (Bortnowska and Makiewiewicz, 2006). According to the National Standard of Iran (No. 2454), if the amount of fat in mayonnaise is reduced by at least 25% (from 66% of fat), it is considered reduced fat mayonnaise, and if it is reduced by 50% in fat, mayonnaise is considered low-fat. (National Standard of Iran 2454, 1394). Fibers are edible parts of plants or similar carbohydrates that cannot be absorbed in the gut and only irritate the gut. Dietary fiber contains polysaccharides, oligosaccharides, lignin and related plant materials. Dietary fiber intake can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, cancer and some gastrointestinal disorders. They can alter tissue properties, eliminate hydration, stabilize high-fat foods and emulsions, and improve shelf life (Zhang et al., 2017). Barley (Avena sativa L.) is an important crop with about 21 million tons annually production worldwide. The seed has been used to raise public awareness about the health benefits of beta-glucan, which helps lower blood cholesterol and glucose levels. Protein is the second most abundant element (12 to 20%) in barley after starch, which contains organic amino acids, due to its high lysine content because globulins make up 70 to 80% of total barley protein. Alcohol-soluble prolamins, on the other hand, are the main storage proteins in other cereals (Nito et al., 2015). Materials and Methods In this study, nitrate, ethanol, methanol, chloroform, ethylene glycol and acetic acid were prepared from Merck Company (Germany) and sunflower oil from Rana Company, vinegar from Somayeh Company, salt from Aali Company, sugar from Pardis Company, mustard from Bijan Company and Barley Malt Pulp was prepared from Behnoosh Company. Chemical extraction method was used to extract fiber. (Salehifar and Fadai Noghani, 2013). To prepare the mayonnaise samples, the powder ingredients including salt, mustard and sugar, vinegar and water were first mixed well and uniformly with a mixer (IKA WERK, Germany). Then, according to the formulation, the fiber extracted from barley malt pulp was gradually added to the above mixture, which was stirring, and the eggs were added to the mixture and mixed thoroughly to obtain a uniform composition. At this stage, the oil was added dropwise with continuous pouring. Finally, the samples of mayonnaise prepared were kept at refrigerator for further analysis. In all samples, the amount of sugar (11.5 g), white vinegar (23.1 g), eggs (39.45 g), salt (4.50 g), water (24.6 g) was constant (Bostani et al., 2011). In this study, in order to reduce the amount of oil, it was replaced with fiber extracted from barley malt pulp at five levels of 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20% (w / w). Results and Discussion The effect of replacing different percentages of fibers extracted from barley malt pulp with fat at levels (5, 10, 15 and 20%) on physicochemical properties (fat, fiber, ash, viscosity and colorimetry (L*) a*, b*) and sensory characteristics (taste, smell, color, texture and general acceptance) were determined using analysis of variance at 5% probability level. Various properties of low-fat mayonnaise showed that as the percentage of barley malt fiber increased, the amount of fat, radiance and yellowness in low-fat mayonnaise treatments (P 0.05) as well as protein content. In the treatments, which was statistically significant (P> 0.05), the results of sensory evaluation of mayonnaise samples showed that the addition of fiber extracted from barley malt pulp resulted in a significant reduction in taste, texture, color and the general acceptance of mayonnaise samples (P 0.05), so that the treatment containing 20% barley malt fiber had the lowest sensory score (taste). Smell, texture, color, acceptance k Li) and treatments containing 5 and 10% barley malt fiber received the highest sensory scores (taste, odor, texture, color, general acceptance) from the panelists. Conclusion According to the results, treatment 3 (containing 10% barley malt fiber) was introduced as the best treatment in the present study.

Optical real-time data processing is advancing fields like tensor algebra acceleration, cryptography, and digital holography. This technology offers advantages such as reduced complexity through optical fast Fourier transform and passive dot-product multiplication. In this study, the proposed Reconfigurable Complex Convolution Module (RCCM) is capable of independently modulating both phase and amplitude over two million pixels. This research is relevant for applications in optical computing, hardware acceleration, encryption, and machine learning, where precise signal modulation is crucial. We demonstrate simultaneous amplitude and phase modulation of an optical two-dimensional signal in a thin lens’s Fourier plane. Utilizing two spatial light modulators (SLMs) in a Michelson interferometer placed in the focal plane of two Fourier lenses, our system enables full modulation in a 4F system’s Fourier domain. This setup addresses challenges like SLMs’ non-linear inter-pixel crosstalk and variable modulation efficiency. The integration of these technologies in the RCCM contributes to the advancement of optical computing and related fields.

Key Clinical Message Although gastro‐pleural fistulas after bariatric surgeries are rare, they are life‐threatening complications that should be suspected in patients who present with gastrointestinal or respiratory symptoms after bariatric surgery. Abstract Previous studies showed an incidence rate of 0.2%–0.37% for gastro‐pleural fistulas after bariatric surgery. We report a 56‐year‐old female with a rare presentation of gastro‐pleural fistula after Roux‐en‐Y gastric bypass, simultaneous fistula of the gastric pouch, and remnant to the pleural space.

48. Chlorogenic acid attenuates liver apoptosis and inflammation in endoplasmic reticulum stress-induced mice

Objective(s): The accumulation of unfolded or misfolded proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum results in a state known as “ER stress”. It can affect the fate of proteins and play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of several diseases. In this study, we investigated the protective effect of chlorogenic acid (CA) on the inflammation and apoptosis of tunicamycin-induced ER stress in mice.Materials and Methods: We categorized mice into six groups: Saline, Vehicle, CA, TM, CA 20-TM, and CA 50-TM. The mice received CA (20 or 50 mg/kg) before intraperitoneal tunicamycin injection. After 72 hr of treatment, serum biochemical analysis, histopathological alterations, protein and/or mRNA levels of steatosis, and inflammatory and apoptotic markers were investigated by ELISA and/or RT-PCR. Results: We found that 20 mg/kg CA decreased mRNA levels of Grp78, Ire-1, and Perk. Moreover, CA supplementation prevented TM-induced liver injury through changes in lipid accumulation and lipogenesis markers of steatosis (Srebp-1c, Ppar-α, and Fas), and exerted an inhibitory effect on inflammatory (NF-κB, Tnf-α, and Il-6) and apoptotic markers (caspase 3, p53, Bax, and Bcl2), of liver tissue in ER stress mice. Conclusion: These data suggest that CA ameliorates hepatic apoptosis and inflammation by reducing NF-κB and Caspase 3 as related key factors between inflammation and apoptosis.

49. Efficacy and safety of 'Jollab Monzej' as a traditional persian compound medicine for the treatment of multiple sclerosis-related fatigue: A randomized placebo-controlled trial

Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of Jollab monzej (JMZ), a Traditional Persian compound medicine, on multiple sclerosis-related fatigue (MSRF). Methods: We did a double-blind randomized controlled phase3 clinical trial on the JMZ syrup in fifty-six relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) patients aged 18-55 years with moderate to severe fatigue using the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) score ≤ 6. We randomly assigned (1;1) participants to the JMZ syrup or placebo syrup groups treated for one month. Participants, investigators, and assessors were unaware of the assignments. The primary outcome was changes in the fatigue score on the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), at baseline and one month after treatment using the intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis. The secondary outcomes were changes in the score of Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Outcomes were measured at baseline, one month after treatment, and 2-week follow-up. Safety was detected in all participants. Results: We randomly assigned 56 participants to the JMZ group (n=28) and placebo group (n=28). Fatigue scores significantly changed in both groups; however, the JMZ group had a greater reduction in FSS score in the ITT analysis. The adjusted mean difference was 8.80 (Confidence interval (CI) 95%, 2.90-14.70, P = 0.00). The mean difference of VAS, BDI, and global PSQI scores were statistically significant (P=0.01, P₌0.00, P₌0.01; respectively). Regarding safety, mild adverse events (AEs) were reported. Conclusion: The results of our study revealed that the administration of JMZ syrup alleviated MSRF and also could improve depression and sleep disorders.

50. Encapsulated Limonene based Multi-layer Electrostatic Adsorption and Evaluate Its Release under Simulated Oral Conditions

IntroductionEfforts have always been made to protect valuable compounds of medicine, food and aromatics materials that are highly sensitive to environmental conditions by the encapsulation method. encapsulation of flavors, in addition to its protection, allows the aromatic substance to be released in a long time, and the time and place of its release can be controlled. To design these protection systems requires detailed information on encapsulation and release methods, the nature of walls and aromatic materials (Gunning et al.,1999). For encapsulation of sensitive compounds such as lipophilic materials, it is necessary to produce an emulsion of the desired substance in wall materials such as proteins, polysaccharides or a mixture of them. The important factors in encapsulation are the molecular weight, chemical properties and polarity of the core materials, the properties of the materials of the walls, and finally, the methods used to produce microcapsules. (Jafari et al., 2008).The aim of this study was to produce and evaluate the properties of two and six layer multilayer microcapsules containing limonene using soy protein isolate and starch modified by spray drying. The release of encapsulated limonene was investigated under artificial oral conditions under different stress conditions. The results of this study can be used to predict the release rate of the encapsulated flavors and their release conditions.Materials and MethodsSolution preparation: The solution of SPI (0-3%) was prepared by methods of Huang et al. (2012). The OSA starch stock solution (0-2%) was prepared by methods of Nilsson and Bergens (2007).Emulsion’s preparation: the primary emulsion of the optimum SPI and secondary emulsion of optimum OSA starch concentration prepared by the method of Noshad et al (2015).Microcapsule production: To prepare the Microcapsules, a laboratory spray dryer was used. 180±5 ᵒC, inlet air temperature, 25 (ml/min) feed rate, and 90±10 ᵒC outlet air temperature were used. Six layer microcapsules was also prepared in the same conditions (Ansarifar et al., 2017)The micro structure, morphology and release of limonene were evaluated and finally by Zero order, First order, Higuchi, and Korsemeyer- peppas models were used to the fitting of experimental data.Limonene release: To investigate the release of the encapsulated limonene, the release of these microcapsules (two and six layer) at 37 ° C and pH = 6.8, as well as frequent chewing (0, 50 and 100 rpm) were examined. For the apply of shear stress, an oral simulator was designed and developed by the Department of Food Science and Technology of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad was used. Results and DiscusionThe results of particle size changes of the initial emulsion formed with different levels of soy protein isolate showed that the particle size decreased with increasing the concentration of this protein to 1.5% and then it was increased. The results of zeta potential showed that with increasing the concentration of soy protein isolate to 1.5%, the zeta potential of the samples increased and with more than 1.5%, it did not have much effect on the zeta potential of the samples, which indicates that concentrate of 1.5% soy protein isolate has a good ability to cover surface of limonene particles. Similarly, 1.2% of OSA starch was determined for the secondary layer.SEM images of the microcapsules showed that in the two-layer wall microcapsules have cavities, cracks and shrinkage. In the starting of drying, the rate of moisture lost is high and on the other hand, the wall is not strong enough to withstand the stresses caused by the exit of moisture from the walls, so the microcapsule has cavities. In six-layer microcapsules, a smooth, non-cracked surface was observed, which can be attributed to the wall strength due to the increase in the number of layers. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic (FTIR) test showed that the outer surface of the microcapsules was covered by OSA starch in two and six layer microcapsules.The release profile of encapsulated limonene showed that the release rate in two layer samples was faster than six layer samples. Also, with increasing shear rate, the amount of release increased. The results of experimental models fitting showed that the first-order model had the best description for releasing limonene from two- and six-layer samples in different conditions. Calculation of diffusion coefficient showed that six-layer microcapsules have a lower diffusion coefficient than two-layer microcapsules, which leads to a decrease in the release rate of limonene.Conclusion The results of this study showed that the layer-by-layer method could be used to produce limonene microcapsules. Soy protein isolate and modified starch can cover limonene droplets well. SEM images showed that the structure of six-layer microcapsules is free of cracks and cavities and has a more uniform surface than two-layer microcapsules. To investigate the mechanism of limonene release from two- and six-layer microcapsules, different kinetic models were used to fit the experimental release data. The results showed that the release of these microcapsules occurred based on the diffusion mechanism and Fick's law, which is the main mechanism of mass transfer in the release process. Also, the results showed that the six-layer microcapsules had a lower diffusion coefficient than the two-layer microcapsules and the release rate was lower in the two-layer microcapsule; This is due to the repetitive coating of soy protein isolate and modified starch around the microcapsules and the increase in wall thickness.
