On investigating the reactivities of aza analogues of super-electrophile 4,6-dinotrobenzofuroxan(DNBF), it was found that the nitro-substituted pyridofuroxan gives a remarkably stable hydrate in aqueous solution. The results reveal major differences between the reactivity of nitro-substituted pyridofuroxan and that of DNBF, with in particular a remarkable tendency of the pyridofuroxan adducts to undergo covalent hydration, resulting in the formation of stable carbinolamines.

Three 4-X substituted picrylacetophenones 3a-c were ionized by phenoxides and carboxylate bases to generate carbonions C-3a-c in 50% H2O-50%Me2SO (v/v) at 25 degrees C. Bronsted beta-B values determined the reaction to proceed through the imbalanced transition states. The strong pi-acceptor characteristic of the 2,4,6-trinitrophenyl moiety greatly influenced the low intrinsic reactivity of 3a-c. Furthermore, the thermodynamic acidities of 3a-c were also determined by the X-substituted benzoyl moiety.

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a laser-based optical technique particularly suited for in situ surface analysis. A portable LIBS instrument was tested to detect surface chemical contamination by chemical warfare agents (CWAs). Test of detection of surface contamination was carried out in a toxlab facility with four CWAs, sarin (GB), lewisite (L1), mustard gas (HD), and VX, which were deposited on different substrates, wood, concrete, military green paint, gloves, and ceramic. The CWAs were detected by means of the detection of atomic markers (As, P, F, Cl, and S). The LIBS instrument can give a direct response in terms of detection thanks to an integrated interface for non-expert users or so called end-users. We have evaluated the capability of automatic detection of the selected CWAs. The sensitivity of our portable LIBS instrument was confirmed for the detection of a CWA at surface concentrations above 15 μg/cm. The aim of this work was to perform highly localized spectroscopic surface measurements by combining time-resolved laser spectroscopy and scanning near-field optical microscopy. The final purpose of that was to study surface sorption at the molecular level of trivalent ions in the framework of nuclear waste disposal assessment. Time-resolved laser spectroscopy presents the advantages of being selective, sensitive, and noninvasive and scanning near-field optical microscopy is a promising technique for high resolution surface speciation. Investigation of the interaction between trivalent europium and a monocrystalline alumina (1102) surface was made using different conditions of concentration and pH. We found that the distribution of sorbed europium was always homogeneous with a decay time of europium (III) equal to 350 micros+/-15 micros. On the other hand, carbonate species with a decay time of 210 micros+/-10 micros or other hydroxide species with a decay time of 180 micros+/-10 micros were detected on the surface when a higher concentration or a higher pH solution, respectively, were used. Distribution of these species was heterogeneous and their associated fluorescence signal was relatively high, evoking a precipitated form. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was also used on the same samples as a complementary technique. A binding energy of 1135.1 eV was obtained for the sorbed europium and another binding energy of 1134.4 eV was obtained for the hydroxide species, thus confirming the presence of two kinds of species on the surface.

Hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) is an alternative technique to ion pairing-reversed-phase liquid chromatography (IP-RPLC) and classical RPLC for separation of alkylimidazolium room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). Particularly, HILIC offers better retention and selectivity for short-chains RTILs imidazolium compounds. HILIC mechanisms were investigated by studying the influence of organic modifier content and salt concentration in the mobile phase. HILIC method was validated by quantifying 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium cation (BMIM) degradation under gamma radiation at 2.5MGy. Development of separative reproducible analytical methods, including for low concentration, applicable to RTILs are today mandatory to improve RTILs chemistry.

Following a potentiometric determination of the relevant pKa values of the (R1R2)C=NOH functionality, the second order rate constants (k(Ox)) for reaction of a large set of oximate bases with two model organophosphorus esters, i.e. bis-(4-nitrophenyl)phenylphosphonate (BNPPP) and bis-(4-nitrophenyl)methylphosphonate (BNPMP), and three toxic compounds, i.e., sarin (GB), soman (GD) and diisopropylphosphorofluoridate (DFP), in aqueous as well as a 30 : 70 (v/v) H2O-Me2SO mixture have been measured. The corresponding Brønsted-type nucleophilicity plots of log k(Ox)vs. pKa(Ox) reveal a clear tendency of the reactivity of the oximates to suffer a saturation effect with increasing basicity in aqueous solution. In the case of BNPMP and the three toxic esters, this behaviour is reflected in a levelling off at pKa approximately 9 but a more dramatic situation prevails in the BNPPP system where the attainment of maximum reactivity at pKa approximately 9 is followed by a clear decrease in rate at higher pKa's. Interestingly, a number of data reported previously by different authors for the sarin, soman and DFP systems are found to conform rather well to the curvilinear Brønsted correlations built with our data. Based on this and previous results obtained for reactions at carbon centers, it can be concluded that the observed saturation effect is the reflection of an intrinsic property of the oximate functionality. An explanation of this behavior in terms of an especially strong requirement for desolvation of the oximates prior to nucleophilic attack which becomes more and more difficult with increasing basicity is suggested. This proposal is supported by the observed changes in pKa(Ox) and k(Ox) brought about by a transfer from H2O to a 30 : 70 H2O-Me2SO mixture. The implications of the saturation effect on the efficiency of oximates as nucleophilic catalysts for smooth decontamination are emphasized. Also discussed is the effect of basicity on the exalted (alpha-effect) reactivity of these bases.

The synthesis of two task-specific ionic liquids (TSILs) bearing 2-hydroxybenzylamine entities is described. These compounds are based on an imidazolium substructure onto which one hydrobenzylamine-complexing moiety is grafted. We have demonstrated that, whether pure or diluted, TSIL is able to extract americium ions. Furthermore, recovery of americium from the IL phase into a receiving phase can be achieved under acidic conditions. A possible mechanism for the metal-ion partitioning is presented, in which the extraction system is driven by an ion-exchange mechanism.

For the first time, the study of a three-step extraction system of water/ionic liquid/supercritical CO2 has been performed. Extraction of trivalent lanthanum and europium from an aqueous nitric acid solution to a supercritical CO2 phase via an imidazolium-based ionic liquid phase is demonstrated, and extraction efficiencies higher than 87 % were achieved. The quantitative extraction is obtained by using different fluorinated beta-diketones with and without the addition of tri(n-butyl)phosphate. The complexation phenomenon occurring in the room-temperature ionic-liquid (RTIL) phase was evidenced by using luminescence spectroscopy.

Combining spectroscopic techniques (TRES and EXAFS) and molecular dynamics simulations, we have investigated the state of trivalent europium dissolved in room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs), as a function of the RTIL anion and in the presence of added chloride anions. The studied RTILs are based on the 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium (Bumim+) cation and differ by their anionic counterparts: BF4-, PF6-, Tf- (triflate, CF3SO3-), and Tf2N- [(CF3SO2)2N-]. The results show the strong influence of the RTIL nature on the first solvation shell of europium and on its complexation with chloride. Depending on the RTIL, europium(III), which was introduced in solution as a triflate salt, is found to be solvated either by RTIL anions only or as neutral undissociated EuTf3 moieties completed by solvent anions. Kinetic effects, related to the viscosity of the RTIL and the nature of the europium salt, also markedly influence the coordination of added Cl- or F- anions to the metal.

In this work, devoted to 1-methyl-3-butylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ionic liquid (BumimPF(6)), the importance of the purity of the solvent for spectroscopic investigations is highlighted. Results from small angle X-ray scattering indicate that the pure solvent exhibits a local organization. Europium(II), which appears to be unusually stable in BumimPF(6), is characterized by spectroscopic techniques (absorption, luminescence). Solvation of Eu(II) in BumimPF(6) and complexation effects in the presence of the crown ether 15C5 solubilized in the ionic liquid are discussed.

A study of the reactions of oximate alpha-nucleophiles with diisopropylphosphorofluoridate (DFP) and two model phosphonates, has revealed either a levelling-off in reactivity or a bell-shaped behaviour in accordance with a critical decoupling of desolvation and bond formation (solvational imbalances); the relevance of these results to detoxification is emphasized.

A series of sigma-adducts (1H-...7H-) derived from the addition of 2-nitropropenide ion to various nitrobenzofuroxans and nitrobenzofurazans have been oxidized electrochemically. The results show that the rearomatization of the carbocyclic ring of these adducts as well as that of a few additional 4,6-dinitrobenzofuroxan adducts (8 H- a-c) is associated with much higher oxidation potentials than found for the same process in the dinitro- and trinitrobenzene series. Especially high Eo values are measured for the oxidation of the 2-nitropropenide 4,6-dinitro- and 4-nitro-6-trifluoromethylsulfonylbenzofuroxan adducts 1H- and 4H- in acetonitrile: E (1H-)= 1.15 V versus SCE; Eo(4H-)=1.33V versus SCE. These values fit well with the available evidence that the chemical oxidation of these adducts requires the use of very strong oxidizing agents to proceed efficiently. The mechanism for the oxidation process has been established. It is shown to involve transfer of two electrons and liberation of one proton per sigma-complex precursor with no evidence whatsoever for the intermediacy of radical anionic species.

In investigating the reactivities of aza analogues of super-electrophile 4,6-dinitrobenzofuroxan (DNBF, 1), we have found that the nitro-substituted pyridofuroxan 2 gives a remarkably stable hydrate 3 in aqueous solution (as evidenced by the requirement of ca. 50% H(2)SO(4) (H(0) approximately -3) for complete recovery of 2). The equilibrium constant K(H)()2(O) for hydration of 2 is estimated to be >/= 100, being comparable only with the K(H)()2(O) values reported for hydration of highly activated neutral polyazaaromatics such as 2- and 6-hydroxypteridines or 7-azapteridine. Interestingly, the NH group of 3 undergoes ionization at rather low pH (p = 5.79), affording an anionic hydroxy sigma-adduct 4 which is thermodynamically 10(8) times more stable than the related sigma-adduct of pteridine. The experimental evidence is that 4 is slightly more stable than the hydroxy sigma-adduct of DNBF, indicating not only that 2 ranks among the most electrophilic heteroaromatics known to date but also than an aza group may in fact be as efficient as a nitro group in promoting sigma-complex formation. 2 is also found to be a versatile Diels-Alder reagent, as a result of the low aromatic character of its six-membered ring. Upon treatment of 2 with cyclopentadiene and 2,3-dimethylbutadiene, various reactivity patterns have been observed. These led to different cycloadducts arising from normal as well as inverse electron-demand condensations involving the pyridine ring as the dienophile or the heterodiene contributor. Altogether, the results reveal major differences between the reactivity of 2 and that of DNBF, with in particular a remarkable tendency of the pyridofuroxan adducts to undergo covalent hydration, resulting in the formation of stable carbinolamines. Also noteworthy is the characterization of a diadduct which results from a Diels-Alder trapping of the o-dinitroso intermediate involved in the exchange of the 1-oxide and 3-oxide tautomers of 2.
