28. Strengthening the Social and Emotional Skills of Pre-Schoolers with Mental Health and Developmental Challenges in Inclusive Early Childhood Education and Care Settings: A Narrative Review of Educator-Led Interventions

Abstract

Mental health and developmental challenges that emerge in early childhood can be associated with difficulty in social interactions and behavioural regulation. With educational policies increasingly promoting inclusion in early learning settings, educators are being called upon to support children's social-emotional competence through evidence-informed practice. A narrative review was undertaken to explore the breadth and summarize research findings related to educator-led Tier 3 social and emotional learning intervention for children with diagnosed mental health conditions or developmental delays. Nineteen evaluation studies were reviewed and synthesized into four themes: (1) instruction embedded into daily routines and activities; (2) direct skill instruction; (3) peer-mediated interventions; and (4) individualized assessment-based approaches. Interventions targeted children with neurodevelopmental disorders, and developmental, social and communication delays, with findings suggesting improvement in children's social skill during or post intervention. Evidence of maintenance and generalization were, however, inconsistent. There is a paucity of peer-reviewed research examining interventions for young children experiencing anxiety or mood disorders.

Abstract

A growing body of research evidence suggests universal (Tier 1) Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) interventions in early childhood education and care settings can improve children's social and emotional development. Less is known however about the effectiveness of targeted (Tier 2) programmes for preschoolers experiencing social, emotional or behavioural challenges. A systematic literature review was conducted to examine the outcomes associated with targeted (Tier 2) SEL interventions; 19 studies were captured in the review. Findings revealed that while evidence for targeted SEL programming is still emerging, it may offer a promising early intervention approach to strengthen aspects of children's social and behavioural functioning. Based on the evidence reviewed, the impact of targeted SEL intervention on emotional competencies could not be established. Programmes were predominately directed to preschoolers with externalizing problems and there appears to be a dearth of approaches focused on internalizing behaviour. Implications for practice and research are discussed.

Abstract

Aims: To inform international guidelines, a systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to assess the performance of diagnostic methods for type 2 diabetes in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Methods: An updated systematic search was conducted on five databases from 2017 until October 2023 and combined with prior searches (from inception). Meta-analyses of diagnostic accuracy tests were conducted. Results: Nine studies comprising 2628 women with PCOS were included. Against the oral glucose tolerance test, a haemoglobin A1C (HbA1c) ≥ 6.5% had a pooled sensitivity of 50.00% (95% confidence interval (CI): 35.53–64.47), specificity of 99.86% (95%CI: 99.49–99.98), and positive and negative predictive values of 92.59% (95%CI: 75.27–98.09) and 98.27% (95%CI: 97.73–98.68), respectively, with an accuracy of 98.17% (95%CI: 97.34–98.79). Fasting plasma glucose values ≥ 7.0 mmol/L had a pooled sensitivity of 58.14% (95%CI: 42.13–72.99), specificity of 92.59% (95%CI: 75.35–98.08), positive and negative predictive values of 92.59% (95%CI: 75.35–98.08) and 99.09% (95%CI: 98.71–99.36), respectively, and an accuracy of 99.00% (95%CI: 98.46–99.39) against the oral glucose tolerance test. Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first systematic review assessing the performance of diagnostic methods for type 2 diabetes in women with PCOS. We demonstrate that using a cut-off for HbA1c of ≥6.5% in this population may result in misdiagnosis of half of the women with type 2 diabetes. Our results directly informed the recommendations of the 2023 International PCOS Guideline, suggesting that the oral glucose tolerance test is the optimal method for screening and diagnosing type 2 diabetes in women with PCOS and is superior to fasting plasma glucose and HbA1c.

Abstract

BACKGROUND Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common and distressing endocrine disorder associated with lower quality of life, subfertility, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. PCOS characteristics, its comorbidities, and its treatment can potentially influence sexual function. However, studies on sexual function in women with PCOS are limited and contradictory.OBJECTIVE AND RATIONALE The aim was to perform a systematic review of the published literature on sexual function in women with PCOS and assess the quality of the research and certainty of outcomes, to inform the 2023 International Guidelines for the Assessment and Management of PCOS.SEARCH METHODS Eight electronic databases were searched until 1 June 2023. Studies reporting on sexual function using validated sexuality questionnaires or visual analogue scales (VAS) in PCOS populations were included. Random-effects models were used for meta-analysis comparing PCOS and non-PCOS groups with Hedges' g as the standardized mean difference. Study quality and certainty of outcomes were assessed by risk of bias assessments and the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) method according to Cochrane. Funnel plots were visually inspected for publication bias.OUTCOMES There were 32 articles included, of which 28 used validated questionnaires and four used VAS. Pooled Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) scores in random-effects models showed worse sexual function across most subdomains in women with PCOS, including arousal (Hedges's g [Hg] [95% CI] = -0.35 [-0.53, -0.17], I-2 = 82%, P < 0.001), lubrication (Hg [95% CI] = -0.54 [-0.79, -0.30], I-2 = 90%, P < 0.001), orgasm (Hg [95% CI] = -0.37 [-0.56, -0.19], I-2 = 83%, P < 0.001), and pain (Hg [95% CI] = -0.36 [-0.59, -0.13] I-2 = 90%, P < 0.001), as well as total sexual function (Hg [95% CI] = -0.75 [-1.37, -0.12], I-2 = 98%, P = 0.02) and sexual satisfaction (Hg [95% CI] = -0.31

41. Tetraphenylanthraquinone and Dihydroxybenzene-Tethered Conjugated Microporous Polymer for Enhanced CO2Uptake and Supercapacitive Energy Storage

Abstract

Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) feature extended excellent porosity properties and fully conjugated electronic systems, making them highly effective for several uses, including photocatalysis, dye adsorption, CO2capture, supercapacitors, and so on. These polymers are known for their high specific surface area and adjustable porosity. To synthesize DHTP-CMPs (specifically TPE-DHTP CMP and Anthra-DHTP CMP) with abundant nitrogen (N) and oxygen (O) adsorption sites and spherical structures, we employed a straightforward Schiff-base [4 + 2] condensation reaction. This involved using 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalaldehyde (DHTP-2CHO) as the primary building block and phenolic OH group source, along with two distinct structures: 4,4′,4″,4”’-(ethene-1,1,2,2-tetrayl)tetraaniline (TPE-4NH2) and 4,4′,4″,4”’-(anthracene-9,10-diylidenebis(methanediylylidene))tetraaniline (Anthra-4Ph-4NH2). The synthesized Anthra-DHTP CMP had a remarkable BET surface area (BETSA) of 431 m2g–1. Additionally, it exhibited outstanding thermal stability, as shown by a Td10of 505 °C. Furthermore, for practical implementation, the Anthra-DHTP CMP demonstrates a significant capacity for capturing CO2, measuring 1.85 mmol g–1at a temperature of 273 K and 1 bar. In a three-electrode test, the Anthra-DHTP CMP has a remarkable specific capacitance of 121 F g–1at 0.5 A g–1. Furthermore, even after undergoing 5000 cycles, it maintains a capacitance retention rate of 79%. Due to their outstanding pore characteristics, abundant N and O, and conjugation properties, this Anthtra-DHTP CMP holds significant potential for CO2capture and supercapacitor applications. This work will pave the way for the development of materials based on DHTP-CMPs and their postmodification with additional groups, facilitating their use in photocatalysis, photodegradation, lithium battery applications, and so on.
