4. Added mass: a complex face of tidal conversion

Abstract

This paper revisits the problem of tidal conversion at a ridge in a uniformly stratified fluid of limited depth using measurements of complex-valued added mass. When the height of a sub-marine ridge is non negligible with respect to the depth of the water, the tidal conversion can be enhanced in the supercritical regime or reduced in the subcritical regime with respect to the large depth situation. Tidal conversion can even be null for some specific cases. Here, we study experimentally the influence of finite depth on the added mass coefficients for three diffierent ridge shapes. We first show that at low forcing frequency the tidal conversion is weakly enhanced by shallow depth for a semi-circular ridge. In addition, added mass coefficients measured for a vertical ridge show strong similarities with the ones obtained for the semi-circular ridge. Nevertheless, the enhancement of the tidal conversion at low forcing frequency for the vertical ridge has not been observed, in contrast with its supercritical shape. Finally, we provide the experimental evidence of a lack of tidal conversion due to the specific shape of a ridge for certain depth and frequency tuning.

Abstract

The von-Karman plasma experiment is a novel versatile experimental device designed to explore the dynamics of basic magnetic induction processes and the dynamics of flows driven in weakly magnetized plasmas. A high-density plasma column (10^16 - 10^19 particles.m^-3) is created by two radio-frequency plasma sources located at each end of a 1 m long linear device. Flows are driven through JxB azimuthal torques created from independently controlled emissive cathodes. The device has been designed such that magnetic induction processes and turbulent plasma dynamics can be studied from a variety of time-averaged axisymmetric flows in a cylinder. MHD simulations implementing volume-penalization support the experimental development to design the most efficient flow-driving schemes and understand the flow dynamics. Preliminary experimental results show that a rotating motion of up to nearly 1 km/s is controlled by the JxB azimuthal torque.

Abstract

We report the observation of dynamo action in the VKS experiment, i.e., the generation of magnetic field by a strongly turbulent swirling flow of liquid sodium. Both mean and fluctuating parts of the field are studied. The dynamo threshold corresponds to a magnetic Reynolds number Rm \sim 30. A mean magnetic field of order 40 G is observed 30% above threshold at the flow lateral boundary. The rms fluctuations are larger than the corresponding mean value for two of the components. The scaling of the mean square magnetic field is compared to a prediction previously made for high Reynolds number flows., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Depleting CD20 + B cells is the primary mechanism by which ocrelizumab (OCRE) is efficient in persons with multiple sclerosis (pwMS). However, the exact role of OCRE on other immune cell subsets directly or indirectly remains elusive. The purpose of this study is to characterize the dynamics of peripheral immune cells of pwMS on OCRE. We collected blood samples from 38 pwMS before OCRE onset (T0) and at 6 and 12 months (T6, T12) after initiation. To cover the immune cell diversity, using mass cytometry time of flight, we designed a 38-parameter panel to analyze B, T, and innate immune cell markers and CNS migratory markers. In parallel, viral-specific CD8 + T-cell responses were assessed by the quantification of interferon-γ secretion using the enzyme-linked immunospot assay on cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, and influenza stimulations. Beside B-cell depletion, we observed a loss in memory CD8 + CD20 + and central memory CD8 + T cells but not in CD4 + CD20 + T cells already at T6 and T12 (p < 0.001). The loss of memory CD8 + T cells correlated with a lower CXCR3 expression (p < 0.001) and CNS-related LFA-1 integrin expression (p < 0.001) as well as a reduced antiviral cellular immune response observed at both time points (p < 0.001). Of note, we did not observe major changes in the phenotype of the other cell types studied. Seven of 38 (18.4%) patients in our cohort presented with infections while on OCRE; 4 of which were switched from dimethyl fumarate. Finally, using a mixed linear model on mass cytometry data, we demonstrated that the immunomodulation induced by previous disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) was prolonged over the period of the study. In addition to its well-known role on B cells, our data suggest that OCRE also acts on CD8 + T cells by depleting the memory compartment. These changes in CD8 + T cells may be an asset in the action of OCRE on MS course but might also contribute to explain the increased occurrence of infections in these patients. Finally, although more data are needed to confirm this observation, it suggests that clinicians should pay a special attention to an increased infection risk in pwMS switched from other DMTs to OCRE.

Peu de recherches ont évalué les conséquences de l’HS sur la sexualité et le désir de parentalité des femmes atteintes.

Abstract

The numerous processes (superficial and deep) occurring on margins, their origins, consequences, interactions and quantifications are only very partially described and understood. The identification of the relative role of factors is sometimes completely contradictory between authors. Here, we showed the results of a long-term multidecadal and multidisciplinary study (using geophysical, geological, stratigraphic, paleontological, geomorphologic, geochemical, microbiological and numerical models) in the Western Mediterranean Sea that acts as a natural laboratory at many different scales. We showed how sediments efficiently recorded at the same time: variations of glacio-eustatic sea-level changes, variations of sediments yield and sources, and also enabled quantifying vertical movements and geodynamic worldwide events but also detailed regional mass transport, turbidites and contourites deposits. They are also an archive of paleoclimatic, palaeoceanographic and diagenetic processes.

40. Toward a multidisciplinary approach: The increasing involvement of nurses in heart failure management.

Abstract

The increasing prevalence of heart failure (HF), alongside the scarcity of medical time, necessitates the development of new practices and the promotion of task-sharing and skill-sharing. Over the past few years, new professions have emerged to facilitate the care of patients with HF: specialized nurses in heart failure management (ISPIC), advanced practice nurses (IPA), and telemonitoring nurses (ITS). In spring 2023, the GICC (Groupe Insuffisance Cardiaque et Cardiomyopathies) distributed a questionnaire via email and social networks to better understand these new professions. 196 usable questionnaires were collected, of which 106 (54%) had exhaustive responses. The majority of respondents were IPAs (59 (47%)), 45 (36%) were ISPICs, and 21 (17%) were ITSs. The average age was 44 years, similar across the three groups. Respondents had a median of 11 years of experience with CV pathologies, but IPAs had significantly less time working with cardiac patients than the other two groups. 57% of IPAs, 81% of ISPICs, and 80% of ITSs have exclusive activity in cardiology (P = 0.021). Outside of cardiology, the most frequently invested specialties are diabetology, geriatrics, and vascular medicine. 48% of the nurses exclusively work with HF patients. Professional practice is mainly in public hospital structures (66%), with non-university hospital centers leading. Private practice is more common among IPAs than other professions (29% of IPAs vs. 5% for ISPICs and 0% for ITSs; P < 0.005). Consultations for uptitration of medical therapy are conducted by 72% of IPAs and 55% of ISPICs. 94% of IPAs and 48% of ISPICs conduct clinical and biological follow-up consultations. A majority of nurses already perform or are in the process of implementing tools to coordinate patient care pathways. 70% of ISPICs participate in therapeutic patient education workshops, compared to only 37% of IPAs and 44% of ITSs (P = 0.049). 100% of ITSs conduct telemonitoring, compared to only 46% of IPAs and 80% of ISPICs (P < 0.001). This initial study highlights the already effective involvement of specialized nurses in the care of HF patients, despite disparities in training and practice mode.
