Abstract

This paper highlights the strong need for precise nuclear structure and decay data measurements in order to perform high-quality modelling on nuclear reactors and other applications. The context of nuclear data evaluation, as well as the importance of low uncertainty evaluations, will be first presented. The importance of such data for interpreting nuclear data experimental measurements is stressed throughout. To demonstrate this, we will explain how mass and charge-dependent fission yields, decay data (in particular for the purpose of residual heat calculations), and inelastic neutrons scattering cross section rely on nuclear structure and decay information and how new and higher quality in such data can lead to improved accuracy in the precision of evaluated nuclear data.

Abstract

The Beryllium Electron capture in Superconducting Tunnel junctions (BeEST) experiment searches for evidence of heavy neutrino mass eigenstates in the nuclear electron capture decay of $^7$Be by precisely measuring the recoil energy of the $^7$Li daughter. In Phase-III, the BeEST experiment has been scaled from a single superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) sensor to a 36-pixel array to increase sensitivity and mitigate gamma-induced backgrounds. Phase-III also uses a new continuous data acquisition system that greatly increases the flexibility for signal processing and data cleaning. We have developed procedures for signal processing and spectral fitting that are sufficiently robust to be automated for large data sets. This article presents the optimized procedures before unblinding the majority of the Phase-III data set to search for physics beyond the standard model.

Abstract

Despite their high relative abundance in our Universe, neutrinos are the least understood fundamental particles of nature. They also provide a unique system to study quantum coherence and the wavelike nature of particles in fundamental systems due to their extremely weak interaction probabilities. In fact, the quantum properties of neutrinos emitted in experimentally relevant sources are virtually unknown and the spatial extent of the neutrino wavepacket is only loosely constrained by reactor neutrino oscillation data with a spread of 13 orders of magnitude. Here, we present the first direct limits of this quantity through a new experimental concept to extract the energy width, $\sigma_{\textrm{N},E}$, of the recoil daughter nucleus emitted in the nuclear electron capture (EC) decay of $^7$Be. The final state in the EC decay process contains a recoiling $^7$Li nucleus and an electron neutrino ($\nu_e$) which are entangled at their creation. The $^7$Li energy spectrum is measured to high precision by directly embedding $^7$Be radioisotopes into a high resolution superconducting tunnel junction that is operated as a cryogenic sensor. The lower limit on the spatial uncertainty of the recoil daughter was found to be $\sigma_{\textrm{N}, x} \geq 6.2$\,pm, which implies the final-state system is localized at a scale more than a thousand times larger than the nucleus itself. From this measurement, the first direct lower limits on the spatial extent of the neutrino wavepacket were extracted using two different theoretical methods. 5. High precision measurement of the $^{99}$Tc $\beta$ spectrum

Abstract

Highly precise measurements of the $^{99}$Tc beta spectrum were performed in two laboratories using metallic magnetic calorimeters. Independent sample preparations, evaluation methods and analyses yield consistent results and the spectrum could be measured down to less than 1 keV. Consistent beta spectra were also obtained via cross-evaluations of the experimental data sets. An additional independent measurement with silicon detectors in a $4\pi$ configuration confirms the spectrum shape above 25 keV. Detailed theoretical calculations were performed including nuclear structure and atomic effects. The spectrum shape was found to be sensitive to the effective value of the axial-vector coupling constant. Combining measurements and predictions, we extracted $Q_{\beta}=$295.82(16) keV and $g_A^{\text{eff}} = 1.530 (83)$. 6. Precise determination of $^{210}$Pb $\beta$ Decay Spectrum at 0 keV and its Implication to Theoretical Calculations

Abstract

The atomic exchange effect will lead to a significant increase in the probability density of $\beta$ decays below a few keV. This effect is very important for scientific experiments that performed by low-energy electron spectroscopy measurements. However, the atomic exchange effect involves multi-electron interactions, especially for a system with 82 electrons such as lead. Different parameters will lead to different trends in the energy spectrum predicted by the theory, so it is urgent to carry out experimental measurements to provide parameter limits for the theory. The probability increase brought about by the atomic exchange effect is most obvious near 0keV, and the $\beta$ energy spectrum is accurately measured near this energy point, so as to provide constraints for the physical model of atomic exchange. However, it is extremely difficult to measure the $\beta$ energy spectrum at 0keV due to the limitations of electronic noise and internal conversion effects. The excited decay path of $^{210}$Pb was taken as the observation object,by measuring the total energy spectrum of $\beta$ rays and cascaded gamma rays, the precise measurement of the $\beta$ energy spectrum near 0keV has been completed. The analysis of the $\beta$ energy spectrum of $^{210}$Pb gives the following conclusions. The experimental results first verified the theory that the exchange effect causes the probability increase at the low energy end near 0keV. At the same time, the experimental results are higher than the existing predictions of the atomic exchange effect. At least for Pb element, all the electron shells have played a role in improving the probability density of the low end of the $\beta$ energy spectrum. This discovery will promote the theoretical calculation of the $\beta$ energy spectrum of $^{214}$Pb, at the same time, it also indicates that the reactor neutrinos have a higher probability density at the omnipotent end.

7. Experimental study of 𝛽 spectra using Si detectors

Abstract

Several scientific users from different communities, such as nuclear medicine, ionizing radiation metrology, nuclear energy industries, and fundamental physics are seeking for a precise knowledge of beta spectra. Consequently, it is of great interest to investigate the spectral shape of beta decaying nuclei with best possible precision. In this work, we aim to investigate precisely β~ decays. For this purpose, we have developed a quasi 4π beta spectrometer based on Silicon detectors (PIPS®). The measurement system is characterized by conversion electron peaks of 109Cd and 207Bi and has been compared with Monte Carlo simulations using nuclear decay data. The preliminary measurements of 14C (allowed transition) and 36Cl (second forbidden non-unique transition) decays have been performed and compared with simulations using the PENELOPE Monte Carlo code.

Abstract

The summation method for the calculation of reactor $\bar{\nu}_e$ fluxes and spectra is methodically revised and improved. For the first time, a complete uncertainty budget accounting for all known effects likely to impact these calculations is proposed. Uncertainties of a few percents at low energies and ranging up to 20% at high energies are obtained on the calculation of a typical reactor $\bar{\nu}_e$ spectrum. Although huge improvements have been achieved over the past decade, the quality and incompleteness of the present day evaluated nuclear decay data still limit the accuracy of the calculations and therefore dominate by far these uncertainties. Pushing the $\beta$-decay modeling of the thousands of branches making a reactor $\bar{\nu}_e$ spectrum to a high level of details comparatively brings modest changes. In particular, including nuclear structure calculations in the evaluation of the non-unique forbidden transitions gives a smaller impact than anticipated in past studies. Finally, this new modeling is challenged against state-of-the-art predictions and measurements. While a good agreement is observed with the most recent Inverse Beta Decay measurements of reactor $\bar{\nu}_e$ fluxes and spectra, it is unable to properly describe the reference aggregate $\beta$ spectra measured at the Institut Laue-Langevin High-Flux reactor in the 80s. This result adds to recent suspicions $\beta$ the reliability of these data and preferentially points toward a misprediction of the $^{235}$U $\bar{\nu}_e$ spectrum., Comment: Reformatted figures. Abstract

The bound beta-decay (BoB) of neutron is also known as the two-body neutron decay, which is a rare decay mode into a hydrogen atom and an anti-neutrino. The state of neutrino can be exactly inferred by measuring the state of hydrogen atom, providing a possible pathway to explore new physics. However, this rare decay mode has not yet been observed so far since it was predicted in 1947. The challenge in observing this decay is not only that its cross section is extremely low, equivalent to about branching ratio of the order of $10^{-6}$ of the three-body decay, but also that the final-state hydrogen atom is neutral and has extremely low kinetic energy, which cannot be effectively detected. In this study, we propose a microcalorimeter-based scheme for measuring the kinetic energies of hydrogen atoms produced from BoB of ultracold neutrons, which has a great advantage in terms of accuracy of the energy measurement. In this study, first, several important issues that require rigorous considerations for the decay measurements and possible solutions are discussed. Then, the requirements of the neutron flux and the appropriate structure design of the microcalorimeter are present by theoretical calculations. In short, this paper outlines our proposed novel experimental scheme for observing the BoB mode, addressing the possible solutions to all the necessary problems.

10. Dissemination and visualisation of reference decay data from Decay Data Evaluation Project (DDEP)

Abstract

As a primary laboratory in the field of ionising radiation metrology, the Laboratoire National Henri Becquerel (LNE-LNHB), CEA Saclay, is involved in measurements, evaluations and dissemination of radioactive decay data. Data measurements undertaken by various laboratories are evaluated by an international commission of experts (Decay Data Evaluation Project) coordinated by LNHB staff in order to establish a set of recommended decay scheme data. New nuclide evaluations are regularly added to our website, the Nucléide database, published in the BIPM-5 Monographie series and uploaded to our web application Laraweb, a dedicated tool for alpha and gamma spectrometry. The Mini Table of Radionuclides is produced from time-to-time with data extracted from our database. Various publications are described, along with new search criteria and decay scheme visualisation in Laraweb.

11. BetaShape: A new code for improved analytical calculations of beta spectra

Abstract

The new code BetaShape has been developed in order to improve the nuclear data related to beta decays. An analytical model was considered, except for the relativistic electron wave functions, for ensuring fast calculations. Output quantities are mean energies, log ft values and beta and neutrino spectra for single and multiple transitions. The uncertainties from the input parameters, read from an ENSDF file, are propagated. A database of experimental shape factors is included. A comparison over the entire ENSDF database with the standard code currently used in nuclear data evaluations shows consistent results for the vast majority of the transitions and highlights the improvements that can be expected with the use of BetaShape.

12. Improved calculations of beta decay backgrounds to new physics in liquid xenon detectors

Abstract

We present high-precision theoretical predictions for the electron energy spectra for the ground-state to ground-state $\beta$ decays of $^{214}$Pb, $^{212}$Pb, and $^{85}$Kr most relevant to the background of liquid xenon dark matter detectors. The effects of nuclear structure on the spectral shapes are taken into account using large-scale shell model calculations. Final spectra also include atomic screening and exchange effects. The impact of nuclear structure effects on the $^{214}$Pb and $^{212}$Pb spectra below $\approx100$ keV, pertinent for several searches for new physics, are found to be comparatively larger than those from the atomic effects alone. We find that the full calculation for $^{214}$Pb ($^{212}$Pb) predicts 15.0-23.2% (12.1-19.0%) less event rate in a 1-15 keV energy region of interest compared to the spectrum calculated as an allowed transition when using values of the weak axial vector coupling in the range $g_{\rm A}=0.7-1.0$. Abstract

A fully analytical description of the allowed $\beta$ spectrum shape is given in view of ongoing and planned measurements. Its study forms an invaluable tool in the search for physics beyond the standard electroweak model and the weak magnetism recoil term. Contributions stemming from finite size corrections, mass effects, and radiative corrections are reviewed. A particular focus is placed on atomic and chemical effects, where the existing description is extended and analytically provided. The effects of QCD-induced recoil terms are discussed, and cross-checks were performed for different theoretical formalisms. Special attention was given to a comparison of the treatment of nuclear structure effects in different formalisms. Corrections were derived for both Fermi and Gamow-Teller transitions, and methods of analytical evaluation thoroughly discussed. In its integrated form, calculated $f$ values were in agreement with the most precise numerical results within the aimed for precision. We stress the need for an accurate evaluation of weak magnetism contributions, and note the possible significance of the oft-neglected induced pseudoscalar interaction. Together with improved atomic corrections, we then present an analytical description of the allowed $\beta$ spectrum shape accurate to a few parts in $10^{-4}$ down to 1\,keV for low to medium $Z$ nuclei, thereby extending the work by previous authors by nearly an order of magnitude., Comment: Accepted for Reviews of Modern Physics

Abstract

The distortions of measured beta spectra are addressed by means of unfolding algorithms. Two different approaches, the Maximum-Likelihood ExpectationMaximization and the Tikhonov regularization, are tested on various simulated spectra, for which the initial spectrum to retrieve is known, and on a 99Tc spectrum measured with our dedicated setup. Statistical uncertainties of distorted measured spectra are propagated by determining the covariance matrices. Both algorithms provide satisfactory results but Tikhonov performs overall better for most of the studied radionuclides. Highlight is made on the necessity to employ at least two independent methods to ensure the accuracy of the unfolded spectra and to estimate the internal bias of each algorithm. Abstract

International audience; Over the past decade, forbidden non-unique beta transitions have been identified to be of critical importance in several fundamental physics topics, such as the modelling of antineutrino flux from nuclear reactors or from the Earth, and the background modelling in dark matter experiments. The decay half-lives of long-lived beta-emitting radionuclides, which are typically highly forbidden transitions, are of importance for geo- and cosmo-chronology. These half-lives are determined by means of activity measurements that must be very accurate. In radionuclide metrology, the BIPM (International Bureau of Weights and Measures) has recently developed a new extended international reference system (ESIR) for establishing primary standards of pure beta-emitting radionuclides, based on the liquid scintillation counting technique. The beta spectrum is an essential input to decisively establish the primary activity of the sample. More generally, a better knowledge of these transitions is also of interest to improve the quality, the completeness and the accuracy of nuclear decay data.Contrary to allowed and forbidden unique transitions, it is essential to take into account the nuclear structure of the initial and final states involved in forbidden non-unique transitions. This situation significantly complicates the formalism and the calculations. Realistic nuclear structure calculations are usually time demanding and require a certain expertise. The transitions can strongly depend on relativistic matrix elements that necessitate relativistic nuclear wave functions, while nuclear structure models are usually non-relativistic. A code that treats these transitions, which is fast and simple to use for a non-expert, is currently unattainable.The present contribution will describe our recent work on the calculation of the forbidden non-unique beta transitions. Realistic nuclear structure information (one-body transition densities) has been determined in the non-relativistic shell model with the NushellX code, which makes use of Hamiltonians fitted to experimental data in different mass regions. The Behrens and Bühring formalism has been studied in detail and specific codes have been developed in order to treat the forbidden non-unique transitions. Several forbidden non-unique transitions, of differing degrees, have been compared to precise measurements. The sensitivity of the spectra to different assumptions has been studied: simplified or full numerical lepton current; determination of the relativistic matrix elements with the conserved vector current (CVC) hypothesis; and methods for determining Coulomb displacement energies. A summary of these results will be presented.

Abstract

International audience; The need of precise measurements of the energy distribution of emitted β particles has been addressed developing a specific detection system. An ultra-thin radioactive source, prepared on purpose, is enclosed between two silicon detectors in a compact geometry with a quasi-4π sr solid angle. The remaining distortions have been corrected with a dedicated deconvolution process based on mono-energetic Monte Carlo simulations that are used to build the response matrix. The β spectra from $^{14}$C and $^{204}$Tl decays have been measured and analysed. Extracted maximum energies are fully consistent with the AME2020 recommended Q-values. A linear slope of a = -0.430 (23) MeV$^{-1}$ that comes from the weak magnetism term in $^{14}$C spectrum has been determined, in excellent agreement with the theoretical predictions. Knowledge of the $^{204}$Tl spectrum has been extended down to 60 keV and ashape factor ($dq^2$ + $\lambda_2p^2$) has been extracted with $d$ = 1.075 (7)

Abstract

International audience; Almost pure beta-emitting radionuclides are challenging to detect and differentiate due to their rather short mean free path in scintillator leading to a poor light production. The LNHB is developing new measurement techniques based on the Compton interaction coincidences method to study the non-linearity of the light yield of scintillators. The major highlights of the system are the use of three-photomultiplier tubes and of a high-efficiency TDCR device [1] for absolute measurements of the average number of detected photons, together with the application of recently developed corrections for accidental coincidences. The performance of the system is demonstrated by measuring the dependence of the light yield on the deposited energy for widely used commercial liquid scintillators.

Abstract

International audience; We investigate the possible origins of the reactor antineutrino anomalies in norm and shape within the framework of a summation model where $\beta^-$ transitions are simulated by a phenomenological model of Gamow-Teller $\beta$-decay strength. The general trends of divergence from the Huber-Mueller model on the antineutrino side can be reproduced in both norm and shape. From the exact electron-antineutrino correspondence of the summation model, we predict similar distortions in the electron spectra, suggesting that biases on the reference spectra of fission electrons could be the cause of the anomalies.

Abstract

Particles and Nuclei International Conference - PANIC20215-10 September, 2021 (online); International audience; Over the last decades, Inverse Beta Decay antineutrino experiments conducted at short and long baselines from nuclear reactors have revealed significant discrepancies on both the rate and shape of the measured spectra compared to state-of-the-art predictions. No evidence for an experimental bias has been demonstrated, and the sterile neutrino interpretation of the reactor antineutrino anomaly is currently disfavored by recent very short baseline reactor experiments. The validity of the predictions is then questioned as the source of the observed discrepancies. This motivates a revision of the reactor antineutrino spectrum modeling, which will also be useful for a new generation of reactor experiments investigating Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering. In this context, a revisited prediction of reactor antineutrino spectra using the summation method is currently underway, including the construction of a comprehensive uncertainty budget associated to both modeling and nuclear data. The ingredients of this new prediction along with preliminary results are presented in this proceeding.

National audience; La mesure de la radioactivité bêta joue un rôle central dans la surveillance de l'environnement, mais également dans de nombreuses branches de l'industrie, dans le domaine médical et pour la recherche fondamentale et appliquée. Du fait de la grande diversité des sources de rayonnement bêta, aussi bien du fait de leur nature physicochimique que de l'énergie du rayonnement émis, de nombreuses techniques de mesure peuvent être utilisées, aussi bien fondées sur l'interaction du rayonnement bêta avec la matière que sur des méthodes non radiométriques.Cet ouvrage collectif, rédigé par des spécialistes de la métrologie bêta et des données atomiques et nucléaires, a pour objet de rassembler les connaissances de base, aussi bien théoriques que pratiques concernant la mesure d'activité des radionucléides se désintégrant par transition bêta et par extension par certaines transitions nucléaires induisant l'émission d'électrons. Abstract

Une connaissance précise des désintégrations par interaction faible, transitions bêta et captures électroniques, est indispensable dans de nombreux domaines scientifiques, des plus fondamentaux aux plus applicatifs : tests du Modèle Standard, détection de la matière noire et du neutrino stérile, métrologie des rayonnements ionisants, caractérisation des détecteurs, médecine nucléaire, puissance résiduelle et surveillance en temps réel des réacteurs nucléaires, ou encore gestion du combustible après irradiation. La question de la qualité, de la précision et de la complétude des données nucléaires est devenue un enjeu important dans ces différents domaines. Ces dix dernières années, le Laboratoire National Henri Becquerel s’est impliqué dans cette thématique, fort de son expertise en métrologie de la radioactivité et en évaluation de données atomiques et nucléaires. Les experts en cryogénie du laboratoire ont développé une nouvelle technique de mesure par calorimétrie et l’ont appliquée avec succès à la spectrométrie bêta. Un système de détection dédié, utilisant des détecteurs silicium, a été élaboré conjointement à une technique de préparation spécifique de source radioactive et à un processus de déconvolution spectrale. En parallèle, une étude théorique a été menée pour améliorer les prédictions, menant notamment à la création du code de calcul BetaShape. Cette étude a permis d’améliorer et de compléter les données nucléaires évaluées. Les résultats obtenus placent le Laboratoire National Henri Becquerel au meilleur niveau mondial sur cette thématique. L’expertise acquise permet d’envisager une contribution significative à des sujets de physique fondamentale qui seront très structurants dans les années à venir.

International audience; The purpose of this monograph, number 5 of the series, is to present the recommended values of nuclear and decay data for a wide range of radionuclides. Activity measurements for more than sixty-three of these radionuclides have already been the subject of comparisons under the auspices of the Section II (dedicated to the measurement of radionuclides) of the CCRI. The material for this monograph is now covered in seven volumes. The first two volumes contain the primary recommended data relating to half-lives, decay modes, x-rays, gamma-rays, electron emissions, alpha- and beta-particle transitions and emissions, and their uncertainties for a set of sixty-eight radionuclides, Volume 1 for those radionuclides with mass number up to and including 150 and Volume 2 for those radionuclides with mass number over 150. Volume 7 contains twenty-four new radionuclide evaluations and five re-evaluations for 67Ga, 208Tl, 228 Th, 242Cm and 244Cm. Volume 8 contains twenty-three new radionuclide evaluations and nine re-evaluations for 88Y, 93mNb, 109Cd, 131I, 131mXe, 133Ba, 140Ba, 140La and 198au. The data have been collated and evaluated by an international working group (Decay Data Evaluation Project) led by the Laboratoire National de métrologie et d'Essais - Laboratoire national Henri Becquerel (LNE-LNHB). The evaluators have agreed on the methodologies to be used and their comments for each radionuclide in addition to the data tables in the present monograph can now both be found on the BIPM website at http://www.bipm.org/en/publications/scientific-output/monographies-ri.html. Consequently, the CD-ROM that accompanied previous issues is no longer deemed necessary and has been discontinued.

Abstract

International audience; Metallic magnetic calorimeters have been used for several years for the determination of the shapes of beta spectra. Experimental spectra of the beta decays of $^{63}$Ni and $^{241}$Pu exhibit, at very low energy, strong deviations from standard theoretical calculations including corrections for screening, radiative, and nuclear size effects. These discrepancies can be attributed to the atomic exchange effect. In particular the spectrum of $^{63}$Ni measured with an electroplated $^{63}$Ni source is in excellent agreement with theory including the exchange effect. This underlines the quality of the experimental spectrum as well as the correctness of the calculation of the exchange effect.

Abstract

International audience; Xenon-127 was standardized by internal gas counting using three proportional counters in a differential arrangement to eliminate edge effects. The detection efficiency of the proportional counters was calculated by considering the cascade of events following the electron capture and associated gamma transitions. Activity per unit volume was measured with 0.7% relative standard uncertainty. Gamma-ray spectrometry was performed and absolute photon emission intensities were derived. This study shows that (127)Xe could be a surrogate for (133)Xe for the calibration of remote radio-xenon monitoring stations.

Nuclear decay data measurements were performed in the frame of a EURAMET project. Two specific goals were addressed: (1) High-precision measurements of 238U alpha-particle emission probabilities and (2) experimental characterization of the shape of beta spectra using cryogenic detectors. In the paper, specific lessons learned from the metrological work are highlighted. Abstract

International audience; The exchange effect has been previously given as a possible explanation for a significant deviation from an allowed shape observed at low energy in the 241Pu β spectrum. Calculations set out here confirm that this atomic effect explains a large part of this deviation. The equations needed to calculate the exchange effect are detailed, as well as the evaluation of the confluent hypergeometric function for complex arguments of large magnitudes. After a review of the possible other effects that could explain the remaining discrepancy at low energy, the screening correction using effective nuclear charges seems to be the best explanation. For radionuclides with high Z, this work has demonstrated the necessity to take into account the spatial variation of the nuclear charge experienced by the ejected electron to accurately correct for the screening effect.

International audience; In ionizing radiation metrology, the energy spectra of beta decays are often needed, especially when measurements are carried out using Liquid Scintillation Counting. The uncertainties on activity measurements can be reduced with a precise knowledge of the shapes of the beta spectra. The few studies which have been conducted on this subject since the 1970s were mainly focused on allowed and first non-unique forbidden transitions. But it is also necessary to have a good knowledge of spectra for unique and non-unique forbidden transitions of higher orders. Our goal is to develop a computer program for calculating beta spectra, validated by experiments, including evaluated uncertainties on the shapes. The exhaustive evaluation of form factors measured so far shows that there are not enough good data to validate those complex calculations. All these considerations highlight the need for a consistent experimental program in which all the distortion phenomena of beta spectra should be analysed and quantified very carefully. This paper describes the present features of the computer program we have developed, BetaShape, and specifies the future work which should be undertaken to improve it.

Abstract

International audience; A computer code for $\beta$-spectrum construction of 1300$+$ radionuclei has been created. The tools use the experimental nuclear data adopted and compiled in the ENSDF file and experimental or estimated parameters of shape factors. The final uncertainty on the calculated $\beta$-spectrum branch tries to deal with uncertainties on the radiation probability, the endpoint energy, and the shape factor parameters.

Abstract

International audience; The purpose of this monograph, number 5 of the series, is to present the recommended values of nuclear and decay data for a wide range of radionuclides. Activity measurements for more than sixty-three of these radionuclides have already been the subject of comparisons under the auspices of the Section II (dedicated to the measurement of radionuclides) of the CCRI. The material for this monograph is now covered in five volumes. The first two volumes contain the primary recommended data relating to half-lives, decay modes, x-rays, gamma-rays, electron emissions, alpha- and beta-particle transitions and emissions, and their uncertainties for a set of sixty-eight radionuclides, Volume 1 for those radionuclides with mass number up to and including 150 and Volume 2 for those radionuclides with mass number over 150. Volume 3 contains the equivalent data for twenty-six additional radionuclides as listed and re-evaluation for 125Sb and 153Sm. Volume 4 contains the data for a further thirty-one radionuclides with re-evaluation for 226Ra. Volume 5 includes 17 new radionuclide evaluations and 8 re-evaluations of previous data as identified in the contents pages. The data have been collated and evaluated by an international working group (Decay Data Evaluation Project) led by the Laboratoire National de métrologie et d'Essais - Laboratoire national Henri Becquerel (LNE-LNHB). The evaluators have agreed on the methodologies to be used and the CD-ROM included with this monograph contains the evaluators' comments for each radionuclide in addition to the data tables included in the monograph. The work involved in evaluating nuclear data is on-going and the recommended values are kept up to date on the LNE-LNHB website at http://www.nucleide.org/DDEP_WG/DDEPdata.htm

Abstract

New measurements have been undertaken to determine the half-life of 151Sm. A pure 151Sm solution was obtained after chemical separation from a samarium solution resulting from the dissolution of an irradiated samarium sample. The concentration of 151Sm in the solution was measured by mass spectrometry, combined with the isotope dilution technique. The activity of the solution was measured by liquid scintillation counting by six European laboratories as part of an international comparison. These combined results lead to a half-life of T1/2 = 94.6(6) a. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
