In this opinion article, we gathered some reflections and practical tips on what Early Stage Researchers do against inequalities in academia. Efficient energy harvesting, conversion, and recycling technologies are crucial for addressing the challenges faced by modern societies and the global economy. The potential of harnessing mid-infrared (mid-IR) thermal radiation as a pervasive and readily available energy source has so far no been fully exploited, particularly through bioinspiration. In this article, by reviewing existing photon-based strategies and the efficiency of natural systems in harnessing light and thermal radiation, I highlight the promising role of bioinspiration in enhancing energy capture, conversion, and recycling. Natural photonic structures found in various organisms, including insects, birds, and plants, exhibit sophisticated optical properties that can be leveraged for energy-efficient applications. These developments pave the way for future research and innovation in bioinspired energy solutions. Ultimately, they contribute to the pursuit of a sustainable and environmentally conscious future by harnessing the beauty of nature's designs to meet humankind's energy needs., Comment: 25 pages, 16 figures

Cloud computing, offering on-demand access to computing resources through the Internet and the pay-as-you-go model, has marked the last decade with its three main service models; Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS). The lightweight nature of containers compared to virtual machines has led to the rapid uptake of another in recent years, called Containers as a Service (CaaS), which falls between IaaS and PaaS regarding control abstraction. However, when CaaS is offered to multiple independent users, or tenants, a multi-instance approach is used, in which each tenant receives its own separate cluster, which reimposes significant overhead due to employing virtual machines for isolation. If CaaS is to be offered not just at the cloud, but also at the edge cloud, where resources are limited, another solution is required. We introduce a native CaaS multitenancy framework, meaning that tenants share a cluster, which is more efficient than the one tenant per cluster model. Whenever there are shared resources, isolation of multitenant workloads is an issue. Such workloads can be isolated by Kata Containers today. Besides, our framework esteems the application requirements that compel complete isolation and a fully customized environment. Node-level slicing empowers tenants to programmatically reserve isolated subclusters where they can choose the container runtime that suits application needs. The framework is publicly available as liberally-licensed, free, open-source software that extends Kubernetes, the de facto standard container orchestration system. It is in production use within the EdgeNet testbed for researchers.

The objective of this study is to address the critical issue of de-identification of clinical reports in order to allow access to data for research purposes, while ensuring patient privacy. The study highlights the difficulties faced in sharing tools and resources in this domain and presents the experience of the Greater Paris University Hospitals (AP-HP) in implementing a systematic pseudonymization of text documents from its Clinical Data Warehouse. We annotated a corpus of clinical documents according to 12 types of identifying entities, and built a hybrid system, merging the results of a deep learning model as well as manual rules. Our results show an overall performance of 0.99 of F1-score. We discuss implementation choices and present experiments to better understand the effort involved in such a task, including dataset size, document types, language models, or rule addition. We share guidelines and code under a 3-Clause BSD license.

Image-to-image reconstruction problems with free or inexpensive metadata in the form of class labels appear often in biological and medical image domains. Existing text-guided or style-transfer image-to-image approaches do not translate to datasets where additional information is provided as discrete classes. We introduce and implement a model which combines image-to-image and class-guided denoising diffusion probabilistic models. We train our model on a real-world dataset of microscopy images used for drug discovery, with and without incorporating metadata labels. By exploring the properties of image-to-image diffusion with relevant labels, we show that class-guided image-to-image diffusion can improve the meaningful content of the reconstructed images and outperform the unguided model in useful downstream tasks.

We propose WS-DINO as a novel framework to use weak label information in learning phenotypic representations from high-content fluorescent images of cells. Our model is based on a knowledge distillation approach with a vision transformer backbone (DINO), and we use this as a benchmark model for our study. Using WS-DINO, we fine-tuned with weak label information available in high-content microscopy screens (treatment and compound) and achieve state-of-the-art performance in not-same-compound mechanism of action prediction on the BBBC021 dataset (98%), and not-same-compound-and-batch performance (96%) using the compound as the weak label. Our method bypasses single cell cropping as a pre-processing step, and using self-attention maps we show that the model learns structurally meaningful phenotypic profiles.

In this account, we describe the crazy-clock phenomenon involving the state I (low iodide and iodine concentration) to state II (high iodide and iodine concentration with new iodine phase) transition after a Briggs-Rauscher (BR) oscillatory process. While the BR crazy-clock phenomenon is known, it is the first time that crazy-clock behavior is linked and explained with the symmetry-breaking phenomenon, highlighting the entire process in a novel way. The presented phenomenon has been thoroughly investigated by running more than 60 experiments, and evaluated by using statistical cluster K-means analysis. The mixing rate, as well as the magnetic bar shape and dimensions, have a strong influence on the transition appearance. Although the transition for both mixing and no-mixing conditions are taking place completely randomly, by using statistical cluster analysis we obtain different numbers of clusters (showing the time-domains where the transition is more likely to occur). In the case of stirring, clusters are more compact and separated, revealed new hidden details regarding the chemical dynamics of nonlinear processes. The significance of the presented results is beyond oscillatory reaction kinetics since the described example belongs to the small class of chemical systems that shows intrinsic randomness in their response and it might be considered as a real example of a classical liquid random number generator.

This contribution, to be published in Imagine Math 8 to celebrate Michele Emmer's 75th birthday, can be seen as the second part of my previous considerations on the relationships between topology and physics (Mouchet, 2018). Nevertheless, the present work can be read independently. The following mainly focusses on the connection between topology and quantum statistics. I will try to explain to the non specialist how Feynman's interpretation of quantum processes through interference of classical paths (path integrals formulation), makes the dichotomy between bosons and fermions quite natural in three spatial dimensions. In (effective) two dimensions, the recent experimental evidence of intermediate statistics (anyons) (Bartolomei et al. 2020) comfort that topology (of the braids) provides a fertile soil for our understanding of quantum particles.

In spite of the crucial role it is believed to play in nature, fluorescence in natural organisms remains under-investigated from optical, chemical and biological perspectives. One example is the transparent wings of insects from the order Hemiptera: fluorescence emission has so far not been reported in any of the 3,000 described species of the superfamily Cicadoidea. The phenomenon has however been investigated in several butterfly and moth species, in which the coloured wing scales are known to embed fluorophores such as papiliochrome II. Photonic structures present in these scales may mediate the associated light emission. Fluorescence has also been described in the vein joints and the membrane of the transparent wings of damselflies and dragonflies. This emission was attributed to the presence of autofluorescent proteins such as resilin that gives rise to low stiffness and high strain in the biological tissues, allowing passive wing deformations. In this article, we characterised the fluorescence emission from the transparent wings of the grey cicada \textit{Cicada orni} (Linnaeus, 1758) and the common cicada \textit{Lyristes (Tibicen) plebejus} (Scopoli, 1763), using linear and nonlinear optical methods. We compared their properties with the fluorescence emission from two other insects exhibiting transparent wings, namely, \textit{Hemaris fuciformis} (Linnaeus, 1758) commonly known as the broad-bordered bee hawk-moth and the Bornean damselfly \textit{Vestalis amabilis} Lieftinck, 1965. These fluorescent behaviours were optically characterised by one- and multi-photon microscopy and spectrometry, allowing us to infer the symmetry of the material as well as the biological role of the fluorophores in the visual perception of insects and to explain the high absorption by the material in the range 300-400~nm., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

The proposal made 50 years ago by Schulman (1968), Laidlaw & Morette-DeWitt (1971) and Dowker (1972) to decompose the propagator according to the homotopy classes of paths was a major breakthrough: it showed how Feynman functional integrals opened a direct window on quantum properties of topological origin in the configuration space. This paper casts a critical look at the arguments brought by this series of papers and its numerous followers in an attempt to clarify the reason why the emergence of the unitary linear representation of the first homotopy group is not only sufficient but also necessary.

Round-Trip Times are one of the most commonly collected performance metrics in computer networks. Measurement platforms such as RIPE Atlas provide researchers and network operators with an unprecedented amount of historical Internet delay measurements. It would be very useful to automate the processing of these measurements (statistical characterization of paths performance, change detection, recognition of recurring patterns, etc.). Humans are pretty good at finding patterns in network measurements but it can be difficult to automate this to enable many time series being processed at the same time. In this article we introduce a new model, the HDP-HMM or infinite hidden Markov model, whose performance in trace segmentation is very close to human cognition. This is obtained at the cost of a greater complexity and the ambition of this article is to make the theory accessible to network monitoring and management researchers. We demonstrate that this model provides very accurate results on a labeled dataset and on RIPE Atlas and CAIDA MANIC data. This method has been implemented in Atlas and we introduce the publicly accessible Web API.

We present high time resolution optical photometric data of the polar VV Puppis obtained simultaneously in three filters (u', HeII $\lambda$4686, r') with the ULTRACAM camera mounted at the ESO-VLT telescope. An analysis of a long 50 ks XMM-Newton observation of the source, retrieved from the database, is also provided. Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are clearly detected in the optical during the source bright phase intervals when the accreting pole is visible, confirming the association of the QPOs with the basis of the accretion column. QPOs are detected in the three filters at a mean frequency of $\sim$ 0.7 Hz with a similar amplitude $\sim$ 1\%. Mean orbitally-averaged power spectra during the bright phase show a rather broad excess with a quality factor Q= $\nu$/$\Delta \nu$ = 5-7 but smaller data segments commonly show a much higher coherency with Q up to 30. The XMM (0.5--10 keV) observation provides the first accurate estimation of the hard X-ray component with a high kT $\sim$ 40 keV temperature and confirms the high EUV-soft/hard ratio in the range of (4--15) for VV Pup. The detailed X-ray orbital light curve displays a short $\Delta \phi \simeq 0.05$ ingress into self-eclipse of the active pole, indicative of a accretion shock height of $\sim$ 75 km. No significant X-ray QPOs are detected with an amplitude upper limit of $\sim$30\% in the range (0.1--5) Hz. Detailed hydrodynamical numerical simulations of the post-shock accretion region with parameters consistent with VV Pup demonstrate that the expected frequencies from radiative instability are identical for X-rays and optical regime at values $\nu$ $\sim$ (40--70) Hz, more than one order magnitude higher than observed. This confirms previous statements suggesting that present instability models are unable to explain the full QPO characteristics within the parameters commonly known for polars., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

A new target design is presented to model high-energy radiative accretion shocks in polars. In this paper, we present the experimental results obtained on the GEKKO XII laser facility for the POLAR project. The experimental results are compared with 2D FCI2 simulations to characterize the dynamics and the structure of plasma flow before and after the collision. The good agreement between simulations and experimental data confirm the formation of a reverse shock where cooling losses start modifying the post-shock region. With the multi-material structure of the target, a hydrodynamic collimation is exhibited and a radiative structure coupled with the reverse shock is highlighted in both experimental data and simulations. The flexibility on the laser energy produced on GEKKO XII, allowed us to produce high-velocity flows and study new and interesting radiation hydrodynamic regimes between those obtained on the LULI2000 and Orion laser facilities., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures, accepted in High Power Laser Science and Engineering journal
