Abstract

This is an open access book. This book presents new theory and methods on compiling lithofacies paleogeographic maps as a key tool for guiding geological survey on shale gas. The fundamental goal of the shale gas geological survey is to find the ‘dessert’ area. It is therefore suggested that the lithofacies paleogeographic study and the technique of mapping should be a solid scientific basis for shale gas exploration. It takes Ordovician Wufeng-Silurian Longmaxi Formation in Sichuan Basin and its adjacent area as an example to illustrate how to find the ‘dessert’ area of shale gas in geological survey phase by compiling lithofacies paleogeographic map. It’s a valuable reference for both scientific research and teaching courses in the fields of sedimentary lithofacies, paleogeography, stratigraphy, and oil and gas.

Abstract

The Sichuan Basin in Southeastern China contains extensive bedded cherts dating back to the Late Ordovician–Early Silurian period. To investigate the origin and depositional environment of these cherts, we conducted a comprehensive study using field observations, thin sections microscopic, silicon isotope analysis, and major and trace element geochemistry of samples from three sections. Our results indicate that the cherts from Wufeng and Longmaxi formations are non-hydrothermal, normal biogenic seawater deposits mainly affected by terrigenous input and slightly associated with volcanic ash. Al2O3/(Al2O3 + Fe2O3T) and LaN/CeN ratios, δCe values and Fe2O3T/TiO2 − Al2O3/(Al2O3 + Fe2O3T), Fe2O3T/(100 − SiO2) − Al2O3/(100 − SiO2), 100 × (Fe2O3T/SiO2) – 100 × (Al2O3/SiO2), and LaN/CeN − Al2O3/(Al2O3 + Fe2O3T) discrimination diagrams indicated that the bedded cherts deposited in the continental margin environment. Abstract

The Late Ordovician-Early Silurian period witnessed the Phanerozoic mass extinction, glacial events, and volcanic events. Paleoweathering indexes chemical index of alteration (CIA), chemical index of weathering (CIW), and plagioclase index of alteration (PIA) indicated that the source area weathering changed from weak to moderate to intense. CIA values in the upper Zhongbao formation ranged from 66.71% to 73.97%, indicating a drier and colder climate. Upward, the CIA values on the bottom of the Mayinggou formation returned to the high value quickly (from 73.86% to 81.31%), suggesting that the ice age ended, the climate became warmer and wetter, and the sea level rose. The Al2O3-(CaO*+Na2O)-K2O triangular plots, Hf-La/Th, and SiO2-Al2O3/TiO2 bivariate plots inferred that the source of the siltstones in the two formations is mostly from the felsic igneous rocks. The samples from the Zhongbao-Mayinggou formations have chondrite-normalized rare earth element (REE) patterns similar to that of the North Qilian volcanic arc rocks. 42. Geochemical Constraints on the Hydrothermal Dolomitization of the Middle-Upper Cambrian Xixiangchi Formation in the Sichuan Basin, China

Abstract

The Middle-Upper Cambrian Xixiangchi carbonates in the Sichuan Basin have been pervasively dolomitized. In the presented work, petrographic investigation revealed three generations of the Xixiangchi dolomites, consisting of dolomicrite (D1, 5–20 μm) with a planar-s to non-planar texture, fabric destructive dolomite (D2, 50–150 μM) with a planar-s to planar-e texture, and saddle dolomite (D3, 300 μm to 4 mm) with a planar-s to planar-e texture. D1 and D2 dolomites are presented as matrix dolomites, whereas D3 dolomites are observed as fracture-filling dolomites. Compared with the matrix D1 and D2 dolomites, which are interpreted as products of dolomitization under near-surface or at shallow burial conditions, the depleted δ13C and δ18O values of D3 than D1 and D2 dolomites are probably caused by the temperature-controlled isotopic fractionation within an increasing fluid–rock interaction at burial. The enriched Mn, Sr, and Ba concentrations of D3 than D1 and D2 dolomites suggest a newly introduced type of diagenetic fluids, which is probably related to the upwelling of magmatic activities (Emeishan large igneous province). By contrast, the abnormally depleted Fe concentration in D3 dolomites is attributed to its preferential incorporation into other solid phases rather than its true concentration. The similar rare earth element (REE) partition patterns of D1 and D2 dolomites demonstrate similar dolomitization fluids related to seawater or marine-origin fluids. The hydrothermal-derived D3 dolomites exhibit a different REE partition pattern by contrast. The negative Eu anomalies of D3 dolomites may represent hydrothermal fluid cooling or an association with intermediate-felsic igneous rocks. The findings of the presented work would enhance our understanding on the hydrothermal dolomitization of the Middle-Upper Cambrian Xixiangchi Formation.
