We report on spectroscopic and photometric observations of the AM CVn system ASASSN-21br, which was discovered in outburst by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae in February 2021. The outburst lasted for around three weeks, and exhibited a pronounced brightness dip for $\approx$ 4 days, during which the spectra showed a sudden transition from emission- to absorption-line dominated. Only $\approx$ 60 AM CVn systems with derived orbital periods are found in the Galaxy, therefore increasing the sample of AM CVn systems with known orbital periods is of tremendous importance to (1) constrain the physical mechanisms of their outbursts and (2) establish a better understanding of the low-frequency background noise of future gravitational wave surveys. Time-resolved photometry taken during the outburst of ASASSN-21br showed modulation with a period of around 36.65 minutes, which is likely the superhump or orbital period of the system. Time-resolved spectroscopy taken with the Southern African Large Telescope did not show any sign of periodicity in the He I absorption lines. This is possibly due to the origin of these lines in the outbursting accretion disc, which makes it challenging to retrieve periodicity from the spectral lines. Blue Large Amplitude Pulsators (BLAPs) are a relatively new class of blue variable stars showing periodic variations in their light curves with periods shorter than a few tens of mins and amplitudes of more than ten percent. We report nine blue variable stars identified in the OmegaWhite survey conducted using ESO's VST, which show a periodic modulation in the range 7-37 min and an amplitude in the range 0.11-0.28 mag. We have obtained a series of followup photometric and spectroscopic observations made primarily using SALT and telescopes at SAAO. We find four stars which we identify as BLAPs, one of which was previously known. One star, OW J0820--3301, appears to be a member of the V361 Hya class of pulsating stars and is spatially close to an extended nebula. One further star, OW J1819--2729, has characteristics similar to the sdAV pulsators. In contrast, OW J0815--3421 is a binary star containing an sdB and a white dwarf with an orbital period of 73.7 min, making it only one of six white dwarf-sdB binaries with an orbital period shorter than 80 min. Finally, high cadence photometry of four of the candidate BLAPs show features which we compare with notch-like features seen in the much longer period Cepheid pulsators., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

We present high-speed photometric observations of 25 cataclysmic variables detected by the All Sky Automated Search for Super-Novae (ASAS-SN), the Mobile Astronomical System of the TElescope-Robot (MASTER) and the Catalina Real-Time Transient Survey (CRTS). From these observations we determine 16 new orbital periods and 1 new superhump period. Two systems (ASASSN-14ik and ASASSN-14ka) have outburst periods of approximately 1 month, with a third (ASASSN-14hv) having outbursts approximately every 2 months. Included in the sample are 11 eclipsing systems, one probable intermediate polar (ASASSN-15fm), 1 SW Sex-type star (MLS 0720+17), 1 WZ Sge-type star (ASASSN-17fz) and one system showing different photometric and spectroscopic periods (ASASSN-15kw)., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables (full version of tables will be available with the journal)

We report the discovery of a new eclipsing polar, MASTER OT J061451.70-272535.5, detected as an optical transient by MASTER auto-detection software at the recently commissioned MASTER-SAAO telescope. Time resolved (10-20 s) photometry with the SAAO 1.9-m, and 1.0-m telescopes, utilizing the SHOC EM-CCD cameras, revealed that the source eclipses, with a period of 2.08 hours (7482.9$\pm$3.5$\,$s). The eclipse light curve has a peculiar morphology, comprising an initial dip, where the source brightness drops to ${\sim}$50% of the pre-eclipse level before gradually increasing again in brightness. A second rapid ingress follows, where the brightness drops by ${\sim}$60-80%, followed by a more gradual decrease to zero flux. We interpret the eclipse profile as the result of an initial obscuration of the accretion hot-spot on the magnetic white dwarf by the accretion stream, followed by an eclipse of both the hot-spot and the partially illuminated stream by the red dwarf donor star. This is similar to what has been observed in other eclipsing polars such as HU Aqr, but here the stream absorption is more pronounced. The object was subsequently observed with South African Large Telescope (SALT) using the Robert Stobie Spectrograph (RSS). This revealed a spectrum with all of the Balmer lines in emission, a strong HeII 4686\AA{} line with a peak flux greater than that of H$\beta$, as well as weaker HeI lines. The spectral features, along with the structure of the light curve, suggest that MASTER OT J061451.70-272535.5 is a new magnetic cataclysmic variable, most likely of the synchronised Polar subclass., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We conducted time-resolved optical spectroscopy and/or time-series photometry of 15 cataclysmic binaries that were discovered in hard X-ray surveys by the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) and the International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL), with the goal of measuring their orbital periods and searching for spin periods. Four of the objects in this study are new optical identifications: Swift J0535.2+2830, Swift J2006.4+3645, IGR J21095+4322, and Swift J2116.5+5336. Coherent pulsations are detected from three objects for the first time, Swift J0535.2+2830 (1523 s), 2PBC J1911.4+1412 (747 s), and 1SWXRT J230642.7+550817 (464 s), indicating that they are intermediate polars (IPs). We find two new eclipsing systems in time-series photometry: 2PBC J0658.0-1746, a polar with a period of 2.38 hr, and Swift J2116.5+5336, a disk system that has an eclipse period of 6.56 hr. Exact or approximate spectroscopic orbital periods are found for six additional targets. Of note is the long 4.637-day orbit for Swift J0623.9-0939, which is revealed by the radial velocities of the photospheric absorption lines of the secondary star. We also discover a 12.76 hr orbital period for RX J2015.6+3711, which confirms that the previously detected 2.00 hr X-ray period from this star is the spin period of an IP, as inferred by Coti Zelati et al. We present photometric and spectroscopic follow-up observations of short-period variables discovered in the OmegaWhite survey: a wide-field high-cadence g-band synoptic survey targeting the Galactic Plane. We have used fast photometry on the SAAO 1.0-m and 1.9-m telescopes to obtain light curves of 27 variables, and use these results to validate the period and amplitude estimates from the OmegaWhite processing pipeline. Furthermore, 57 sources (44 unique, 13 also with new light curves) were selected for spectroscopic follow-up using either the SAAO 1.9-m telescope or the Southern African Large Telescope. We find many of these variables have spectra which are consistent with being delta Scuti type pulsating stars. At higher amplitudes, we detect four possible pulsating white dwarf/subdwarf sources and an eclipsing cataclysmic variable. Due to their rarity, these targets are ideal candidates for detailed follow-up studies. From spectroscopy, we confirm the symbiotic binary star nature of two variables identified as such in the SIMBAD database. We also report what could possibly be the first detection of the `Bump Cepheid' phenomena in a delta Scuti star, with OW J175848.21-271653.7 showing a pronounced 22% amplitude dip lasting 3 minutes during each pulsational cycle peak.
