We have used resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS) to study the misfit strain in Sr$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ (SCO), a cuprate that contains both doped spin ladders and spin chains, as well as a "control" sample without holes, La$_{6}$Ca$_{8}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ (LCCO). The misfit strain wave in SCO is strongly temperature (T)-dependent and is accompanied by a substantial hole modulation. In LCCO the strain wave is weaker, shows no hole modulation, and is T-independent. The observed strain wave vector, $L_c=0.318$, is close to the 4k$_F$ instability of the chain. Our results indicate that the chain charge order observed in SCO by several groups is a 4k$_F$ charge density wave (CDW) amplified by the misfit strain in this material. This demonstrates a new mechanism for CDW formation in condensed matter and resolves several contraversies over the transport properties of SCO., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We report resonant inelastic x-ray scattering studies of electronic excitations in a wide variety of cuprate compounds. Specifically, we focus on the charge-transfer type excitation of an electron from a bonding molecular orbital to an antibonding molecular orbital in a copper oxygen plaquette. Both the excitation energy and the amount of dispersion are found to increase significantly as the copper oxygen bond-length is reduced. We also find that the estimated bond-length dependence of the hopping integral t_pd is much stronger than that expected from tight-binding theory., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We report a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of charge excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional Mott insulator SrCuO2. We observe a continuum of low-energy excitations, in which a highly dispersive feature with a large sinusoidal dispersion (~1.1 eV) resides. We have also measured the optical conductivity, and studied the dynamic response of the extended Hubbard model with realistic parameters, using a dynamical density-matrix renormalization group method. In contrast to earlier work, we do not find a long-lived exciton, but rather these results suggest that the excitation spectrum comprises a holon-antiholon continuum together with a broad resonance., Comment: Final version to be published in Phys. Nonlinear conduction (NLC) of the two-leg spin ladder, Sr$_{14-x}$Ca$_x$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$, was investigated for the $x$=0, 1 and 12 materials . Although insulating materials ($x$=0 and 1) exibited the NLC both in the ladder- and rung directions, the NLC in the ladder direction of the $x$=0-material was found to be very special. We considered this to be due to the sliding motion of the charge ordered state, which was responsible for the resonance at microwave frequencies. We discussed possible candidates for the charge ordered state responsible for the NLC, including Wigner crystal in quasi one dimension (4$k_F$-CDW)., Comment: 5 figures

We used transport and Raman scattering measurements to identify the insulating state of self-doped spin 1/2 two-leg ladders of Sr_{14}Cu_{24}O_{41} as a weakly pinned, sliding density wave with non-linear conductivity and a giant dielectric response that persists to remarkably high temperatures.

Raman measurements in the 1.5 - 20 cm-1 energy range were performed on single crystals of Sr_{14-x}Ca_xCu_{24}O_{41}. A quasielastic scattering peak (QEP) which softens with cooling is observed in the polarization parallel to the ladder direction for samples with x = 0, 8 and 12. The QEP is a Raman fingerprint of pinned collective density wave excitations screened by uncondensed carriers. Our results suggest that transport in metallic samples, which is similar to transport in underdoped high-T_c cuprates, is driven by a collective electronic response., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

The two-magnon (2M) excitation at 3000 cm-1 in Sr_14Cu_24O_41 two-leg ladder is studied by Raman scattering. A slight anisotropy of the superexchange coupling J_{\perp}/J_{||} \approx 0.8 with J_{||} = 110 \pm 20 meV is proposed from the analysis of the magnetic scattering. The resonant coupling across the charge transfer gap increases the 2M intensity by orders of magnitude. The anisotropy of Raman scattering is dependent upon the excitation energy. The 2M relaxation is found to be correlated with the temperature dependent electronic Raman continuum at low frequencies., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Accepted for Physical Review Letters

The low-energy electronic structure of the trilayer cuprate superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+\delta}$ near optimal doping is investigated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The normal state quasiparticle dispersion and Fermi surface, and the superconducting d-wave gap and coherence peak are observed and compared with those of single and bilayer systems. We find that both the superconducting gap magnitude and the relative coherence-peak intensity scale linearly with $T_c$ for various optimally doped materials. This suggests that the higher $T_c$ of the trilayer system should be attributed to parameters that simultaneously enhance phase stiffness and pairing strength., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figres

We have measured the temperature- and frequency dependence of the microwave and millimeter wave conductivity $\sigma_1(T,\omega)$ along both the ladder (c-axis) and the leg (a-axis) directions in Sr$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$. Below a temperature $T^*$($\sim$170 K), we observed a stronger frequency dependence in $\sigma_1^c(T,\omega)$ than that in $\sigma_1^a(T,\omega)$, forming a small resonance peak developed between 30 GHz and 100 GHz. We also observed nonlinear dc conduction along the c-axis at rather low electric fields below $T^*$. These results suggest some collective excitation contributes to the c-axis charge dynamics of the slightly hole-doped ladders of Sr$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ below $T^*$., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure, to be published in Europhysics Letters

We report momentum resolved charge excitations in a one dimensional (1-D) Mott insulator studied using high resolution (~ 325 meV) inelastic x-ray scattering over the entire Brillouin zone for the first time. Excitations at the insulating gap edge are found to be highly dispersive (momentum dependent)compared to excitations observed in two dimensional Mott insulators. The observed dispersion in 1-D is consistent with charge excitations involving holons which is unique to spin-1/2 quantum chain systems. These results point to the potential utility of inelastic x-ray scattering in providing valuable information about electronic structure of strongly correlated insulators., Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, Revised with minor changes

The unoccupied electronic structure for the Sr_14Cu_24O_41 family of two-leg ladder compounds was investigated for different partial substitutions of Sr^2+ by Ca^2+, leaving the nominal hole count constant, and by Y^3+ or La^3+, reducing the nominal hole count from its full value of 6 per formula unit. Using polarization-dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy on single crystals, hole states on both the chain and ladder sites could be studied. While for intermediate hole counts all holes reside on O sites of the chains, a partial hole occupation on the ladder sites in orbitals oriented along the legs is observed for the fully doped compound Sr_14Cu_24O_41. On substitution of Ca for Sr orbitals within the ladder planes but perpendicular to the legs receive some hole occupation as well., Comment: 10 pages RevTeX style with 7 embedded figures + 1 table; accepted by Phys. We have measured the energy and momentum dependent loss function of Li_2CuO_2 single crystals by means of electron energy-loss spectroscopy in transmission. Using the same values for the model parameters, the low-energy features of the spectrum as well as published Cu 2p_(3/2) x-ray photoemission data of Li_2CuO_2 are well described by a cluster model that consists of a single CuO_4 plaquette only. This demonstrates that charge excitations in Li_2CuO_2 are strongly localized., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_{1}$) has been measured in the single crystals of hole doped two-leg ladder compounds Sr$_{14-x}$Ca$_{x}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ and in the undoped parent material La$_6$Ca$_8$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$. Comparison of $1/T_{1}$ at the Cu and the two distinct oxygen sites revealed that the major spectral weight of low frequency spin fluctuations is located near $q \sim (\pi, \pi)$ for most of the temperature and doping ranges investigated. Remarkable difference in the temperature dependence of $1/T_1$ for the two oxygen sites in the heavily doped $x$=12 sample revealed reduction of singlet correlations between two legs in place of growing antiferromagnetic correlations along the leg direction with increasing temperature. We report strong instantaneous photoinduced absorption (PA) in the quasi-one-dimensional Mott insulator ${\rm Sr_2CuO_3}$ in the IR spectral region. The observed PA is to an even-parity two-photon state that occurs immediately above the absorption edge. Theoretical calculations based on a two-band extended Hubbard model explains the experimental features and indicates that the strong two-photon absorption is due to a very large dipole-coupling between nearly degenerate one- and two-photon states. Room temperature picosecond recovery of the optical transparency suggests the strong potential of ${\rm Sr_2CuO_3}$ for all-optical switching., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Spin-ladder compounds make interesting analogs of the high-temperature superconductors, because they contain layers of nearly one-dimensional "ladders" consisting of a square array of copper and oxygen atoms. Increasing the number of legs in the ladders provides a step-wise approach toward the two-dimensional copper-oxygen plane, that structure believed to be a key to high temperature superconductivity. Short-range spin correlations in ladders have been predicted to lead to formation of hole pairs favorable for superconductivity, once enough holes are introduced onto the ladders by doping. Indeed, superconductivity has been discovered in the two-leg ladder compound (Sr,Ca)$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ under high pressure. Here we show that charge transport in the non-superconducting state of (Sr,Ca)$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ shares three distinct regimes in common with high-temperature superconductors, including an unexplained insulating behavior at low temperatures in which the resistivity increases as the logarithm of the temperature. These observations suggest that the logarithmic divergence arises from a new localization mechanism common to the ladder compounds and the high-temperature superconductors, which may arise from nearly one-dimensional charge transport in the presence of a spin gap., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, corrected address ref

We have determined the dynamical dielectric response of a one-dimensional, correlated insulator by carrying out electron energy-loss spectroscopy on Sr2CuO3 single crystals. The observed momentum and energy dependence of the low-energy features, which correspond to collective transitions across the gap, are well described by an extended one-band Hubbard model with moderate nearest neighbor Coulomb interaction strength. An exciton-like peak appears with increasing momentum transfer. These observations provide experimental evidence for spin-charge separation in the relevant excitations of this compound, as theoretically expected for the one-dimensional Hubbard model., Comment: RevTex, 4 pages+2 figures, to appear in PRL (July 13)

We present an experimental study of the dynamics of holes in the valence bands of 0, 1, and 2 dimensional undoped model cuprates, as expressed via the screening of a Cu 2p core hole. The response depends strongly upon the dimensionality and the details of the Cu-O-Cu network geometry and clearly goes beyond the present theoretical state-of-the-art description within the three-band d-p model., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures

Neutron scattering measurements have been performed on the S=1/2 quasi-one-dimensional system Sr_{14-x}Y_{x}Cu_{24}O_{41}, which has both simple chains and two-leg ladders of copper ions. We observed that when a small amount of yttrium is substituted for strontium, which is expected to reduce the number of holes, the dimerized state and the structure in the chain are changed drastically. The inelastic peaks originating from the dimerized state of the chain becomes broader in energy but not in momentum space. This implies that the dimerized state becomes unstable but the spin correlations are unchanged with yttrium substitution. Furthermore, it was observed that nuclear Bragg peak intensities originating from the chain show strong temperature and x dependence, which suggests that the chains slide along the c axis as temperature and x are varied., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, to appear in Phys. We report elastic neutron diffraction and muon spin relaxation (muSR) measurements of the quasi one-dimensional antiferromagnets Sr2CuO3 and Ca2CuO3, which have extraordinarily reduced TN/J ratios. We observe almost resolution-limited antiferromagnetic Bragg reflections in Sr2CuO3 and obtain a reduced ordered moment size of ~0.06 \muB. We find that the ratio of ordered moment size \mu(Ca2CuO3)/\mu(Sr2CuO3)=1.5(1) roughly scales with their Neel temperatures, which suggests that the ordered moment size of quasi one-dimensional antiferromagnets decreases continuously in the limit of vanishing inter-chain interactions., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures
