Daughters serve as role models, caregivers, or collaborators. 5) Low communal coping heightens psychological distress. It does so by challenging family roles, increasing social isolation, and compromising social support.ConclusionObesity interventions for Mexican American women may benefit from targeting relational skills to improve family functioning.

Background and Objectives The complexities surrounding aging, dementia, and care are timely issues that transcend beyond institutional boundaries, evincing a critical debate on later life across disciplines. The aim of this study is to offer fresh insights into the intricate paradigms of living and growing older with dementia. The study focuses on the Nobel Prize-winning author Annie Ernaux's memoir  I Remain in Darkness  (1999), which provides a candid account of her mother's journey through dementia from its onset to the gradual decline.  Research Design and Methods This article employs the theoretical frameworks of literary gerontology, illness narratives and life writing to address the challenges of aging, dementia and care that are represented in Ernaux's memoir. It also addresses societal attitudes and stigma associated with aging and dementia by exploring the embarrassment that individuals and families experience when confronted with the deteriorating mental health of their loved ones.  Results Ernaux's memoir explores the nuances of dementia and caregiving within both the familial and institutional context, and sheds light on the complex relationship between a mother and a daughter. Through the act of witnessing, Ernaux embarks on a path of healing, which allows her to confront her past wounds and better navigate the challenges that lie ahead. However, Ernaux's confessional memoir also troubles the ethics of life writing and identity issues, and seems to perpetuate the pathologizing medical gaze through the exposure of her mother's vulnerability and intimacy in the face of dementia and care. Discussion and Implications Ernaux's account of her mother's dementia and aging is both a confessional piece of writing and a narrative therapy, which reveals the challenges of aging, illness, and unresolved family tensions. Her work illuminates the interconnectedness between the past, present, and future, and shows that illness narratives can act as a catalyst for transformative change, identity formation, and self-reflection. The article addresses the intricacies of old age, showcasing how life writing and humanities-based inquiry can bring to the fore key aspects of the latest stages in life, which are often unvoiced because they represent the most unpleasant and feared aspects of aging in contemporary society. To better understand adolescent experiences of menstruation, the CODE Red project was initiated to examine period poverty and menstruation stigma. As part of the project, a survey was posted online through Qualtrics, and the link was posted to social media sites. One hundred and eighty-seven individuals completed the open-ended questionnaire between January and August 2022. The individuals are based in the United States, with most coming from northeastern Indiana. Using an iterative analysis, the data were analyzed using the theory of memorable messages. Three themes emerged supporting memorable messages: the negative cycle of self, talk silence breeds silence, and my mom wasn’t there. The study concludes that grin n’ bear it and silence are the predominant types of memorable messages first-time menstruators’ experience. Moreover, first-time menstruators experience self-silencing and other-silencing. Implications include that silence negatively impacts the mother-daughter relationship and that attention should be paid to the importance of communication before menarche.

This descriptive linguistic study aims to check the effect of age (old/young) and social role (mother/daughter) on the kind of emojis and their intended meanings that Saudi mothers use while chatting with their daughters. The data has been collected from twenty Saudi mother-daughter WhatsApp groups’ chat interactions. The study is qualitative in its approach and has used computer-mediated discourse analysis (CMDA) of ‘coding and counting’ (Herring 2004) on (58 screenshots) and has revealed (42 emoji types) of Saudi mothers used in different frequencies. A combination of multi-choice and open-ended questionnaires has been tailor-made to arrive at the subjective perspectives of ninety Saudi young females. The findings show that there are variations in the kind of emojis used and their intended meanings, signaling the two generations and social roles apart. The results signaled (7 Saudi mom emoji types) that are never used by Saudi young females at all. These emojis were found to be age-specific and social role specific. The rest of the emojis (35 emoji types) were found to be used by both groups but with differences in usage and intended meanings, marking again the differences in age and social role. Despite variations of emojis and their meanings, there were many factors that helped youngsters to understand the intended meanings of their mother’s emojis: the accompanying text, frequent chatting with their mothers, and the literal representation of the emojis their mothers used. Even though accommodation is the process Saudi young females developed in order to understand their mother’s emojis and their intended meanings, there were minor misunderstandings found. The reason has been attributed to what has been termed in this study as the ‘emoji gap’ that marks the effect of age and social role (Evans 2015, 2017; White 2017; Marko 2022). Saudi mother-daughter WhatsApp conversations revealed that they are approximate to the structure of face-to-face conversation in relation to their back-and-forth quasi-synchronous messages, topics discussed, the informal style, the intimate relation, and the Saudi dialects used accompanied with related emojis that agree with the content of the digital texts. Geetanjali Shree has expressed the stories of Indian women and their nature, psychology, and struggle through her characters in the novel Tomb of Sand. She is a sensitive storyteller with a firm grasp on all the issues affecting women's lives, from the home-family to the community and particular region. These historical issues of Indian society which deeply affects the women have been brought up in Gitanjali Shri's fiction and seem relevant in every circumstance through the story of two women-Mother and Daughter. This paper analyses the what is to be a woman in a man's world and the catastrophes she has to go through her life just because she's a woman. It questions about the women's freedom of choice and what is to be a true feminist. It demonstrates how women have to face patriarchy in the name of family values and Indian customs. Abstract Background The inclusion of protective factors (“assets”) are increasingly supported in developing culturally grounded interventions for American Indian (AI) populations. This study sought to explore AI women’s cultural assets, perspectives, and teachings to inform the development of a culturally grounded, intergenerational intervention to prevent substance abuse and teenage pregnancy among AI females. Methods Adult self-identified AI women (N = 201) who reside on the Navajo Nation completed a cross-sectional survey between May and October 2018. The 21-question survey explored health communication around the transition to womanhood, cultural assets, perceptions of mother–daughter reproductive health communication, and intervention health topics. Univariate descriptive analyses, chi squared, and fisher’s exact tests were conducted. Results Respondents ranged in age from 18 to 82 years, with a mean age of 44 ± 15.5 years. Women self-identified as mothers (95; 48%), aunts (59; 30%), older sisters (55; 28%), grandmothers (37; 19%), and/or all of the aforementioned (50; 25%). 66% (N = 95) of women admired their mother/grandmother most during puberty; 29% (N = 58) of women were 10–11 years old when someone first spoke to them about menarche; and 86% (N=172) felt their culture was a source of strength. 70% (N = 139) would have liked to learn more about reproductive health when they were a teenager; 67% (N = 134) felt Diné mothers are able to provide reproductive health education; 51% (N = 101) reported having a rite of passage event, with younger women desiring an event significantly more than older women. Responses also indicate a disruption of cultural practices due to government assimilation policies, as well as the support of male relatives during puberty. Conclusions Results informed intervention content and delivery, including target age group, expanded caregiver eligibility criteria, lesson delivery structure and format, and protective cultural teachings. Other implications include the development of a complementary fatherhood and/or family-based intervention to prevent Native girls’ substance use and teen pregnancy.

Guided by the developmental theory of embodiment, the current study explored feminist embodiment as a protective factor that may simultaneously promote more positive (and less negative) body talk and body image outcomes among mothers and their young adult daughters. Results from an expanded actor-partner interdependence model (APIM; N = 169 dyads) revealed that our construct of feminist embodiment, which was composed of feminist attitudes, mind-body connection, and psychological empowerment, has potential benefits for both mothers and daughters. Specifically, actor effects indicated that feminist embodiment was positively associated with both mothers' and daughters' body image, and it was indirectly associated with both women's own body image through more positive (and less negative) body talk. Additionally, partner effects revealed a number of direct effects between one's own body talk and the other's body image, and also that daughters' feminist embodiment was indirectly associated mothers' body image through daughters' positive body talk. This study highlights the empowering and supportive nature of mother-daughter relationships and suggests the potential body image benefits of women experiencing feminist embodiment. • A latent construct of feminist embodiment in mothers and daughters was evaluated. • Feminist embodiment was associated with one's own body talk and body image. • Lower negative body talk in mothers predicted better body image in daughters. • Higher positive body talk and lower negative body talk in daughters predicted better body image in mothers. Latinas are at an increased risk for diabetes and reproductive health (RH) complications with sexuality and pregnancy. This study explored the understanding of diabetes related to RH, pregnancy, unplanned pregnancies, preconceptioncounseling, tight-control, and family planning among Latina adolescents with diabetes and their mothers and explored converging themes. The qualitative descriptive study used written open-ended questions (English or Spanish) with Latina mothers (n = 13) and daughters (n = 21). Responses were transcribed. Content analysis was used by four researchers who coded and discussed themes and reached consensus. Converging themes were confirmed using Atlas.ti software. Seven themes emerged from the mother–daughter dyad: communication (awkwardness, ambivalence, styles); control (being controlled vs. controlling); consequences (fertility, complications); planning (pregnancy, being healthy, life plan, RH); support; danger, risk, and safety; and stigma. Many mother–daughter dyads were not ready to discuss RH among themselves. Cultural and familial perspectives should be considered when providing care and preconception counseling to this population. Helga Schneider’s Let me go reveals the ethical burden that an author invariably feels in the retelling of private events. Often, literary representations of lacerating family dynamics expose the role of history in the rupture of intimate ties between their members. Narratives juxtapose the private aspects of the family story with the public events that partly shaped such dynamics. In Let me go, Schneider lays bare such intersections, and makes visible the impact of history upon her own existence. She is an indirect witness to the Holocaust, a position due to her own mother’s proactive participation in the project of Endlösung of the Jews of Europe. A larger sense of morality involving her role in the killing of innocent ones takes over any possible attempt the daughter might pursue at making amends for her old mother. As the memoir is a published body of writing, readers are involved as jury in the written stage of another public trial to an unapologetic war criminal, Traudi Schneider. The daughter Helga decrees the fate of her protagonist’s reception by probing her culpability with terrible evidences. In this trial, fiction is crueler than reality as facts are sustained by ineluctable proofs of her guilt for which there can’t be forgiveness.

Objective: African American female adolescents face disparities compared with White peers in the interrelated areas of mental health symptoms and sexually transmitted infection (STI) acquisition. IMARA (Informed, Motivated, Aware and Responsible about AIDS) is a group-based mother–daughter intervention addressing these factors among African American teenagers. Previous work demonstrated that female adolescents who received IMARA were 43% less likely than controls to evidence a new STI at 1 year. This report aimed to provide the 1st test of IMARA on externalizing and internalizing symptoms and an exploratory analysis of whether symptom improvements were associated with the protective effect of treatment against future STIs. Method: Female African Americans aged 14–18 years (M = 16; N = 199) were randomly assigned to IMARA or a health promotion control group matched for time and structure. They completed the Youth Self-Report of externalizing and internalizing symptoms at baseline and at 6 and 12 months and were tested for STIs at baseline and 12 months; positive cases were treated. Hierarchical linear modeling tested symptom change over time, including the moderating effects of baseline symptoms. Results: Among participants who entered with high versus lower externalizing symptoms, those who received IMARA showed a slightly greater decrease in externalizing scores relative to the control (p =.035). For these youth, symptom improvements appeared to be associated with IMARA's protective effect against new STIs. Treatment was not associated with internalizing symptom change (p >.05). Conclusion: IMARA shows promise in modestly reducing self-reported externalizing symptoms, although only for participants with high scores at baseline. The possibility that externalizing symptom improvement is linked with reduced STI acquisition warrants future examination. What is the public health significance of this article?: IMARA (Informed, Motivated, Aware and Responsible about AIDS) is a group-based mother–daughter intervention targeting externalizing and internalizing symptoms and sexual risk behaviors among African American female teenagers. This study demonstrated that IMARA modestly improved self-reported externalizing symptoms among daughters who entered with high, but not lower, symptom levels. Preliminary evidence further suggested that among female adolescents who started with high externalizing symptoms, symptom improvements might have been associated with the protective effect of IMARA against new sexually transmitted infections. This study was conducted to determine the generalizability of the Mother–Adult Daughter Questionnaire (MAD) for first- and second-generation Afro-Caribbean women. The measure was created specifically to explore adult daughters' reports of their relationship with their mothers in order to capture the values of connectedness, trust in hierarchy, and interdependence in the mother–daughter relationship. We test this cross-generational applicability to (1) determine the generalizability of the measure for first- and second-generation women and (2) assess whether the means of the subscales differ across first- and second-generation women. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to test the factor structure of the MAD with this population. The sample (N = 285) was comprised of reports from 129 adult daughters born in the United States and 156 born in the Caribbean. CFAs indicated that the scoring algorithm for the subscales fit these data well. Results indicated that the MAD subscales (Connectedness, Trust in Hierarchy, and Interdependence) were applicable and may operate similarly across first- and second-generation Afro-Caribbean women. This qualitative study examines the role of communication among African American mothers living with HIV and their daughters in HIV prevention. Multiple themes emerged from our analysis of semistructured interviews with mothers (n = 15), and their adult daughters, (n = 15) such as perceptions of HIV risk communication, HIV/AIDS knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs. The findings of the study revealed differences in communication between mothers and daughters. Daughters felt they did not receive adequate and frequent HIV prevention advice from their mothers. Implications include strengthening communication content between mother-daughter dyads in HIV prevention programs that can aid in reducing HIV risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Women's Mental Health Questionnaire (W-MHQ) assesses females" adult mental health concerns, and examines their associations with specified father-daughter childhood relationships. Presented are W-MHQ item and scale development, and psychometric findings drawn from factor analyses, reliability assessments, and validation processes. For counselors who work with troubled students, the Women's Mental Health Questionnaire (W-MHQ) provides an assessment process that extends traditional measures for Depression, and introduces scales for Counseling Needs, Deferent Behavior, and Mother Estrangement. Counseling implications for counselors, therapists and researchers emerged in the associations shown between W-MHQ factored scales and women's childhood father-daughter relational experiences; experiences measured by the MP-FDI Author-Father-Daughter Relationship Inventory (Author, 2008). Both instruments (W-MHQ and MP-FDI) written in the first-person voice of a women, open a door for counselors and therapists to dialogue with women about their mental health concerns and childhood parental experiences. Findings in this research suggest an association may exist between women's adult mental health concerns, and their childhood father-daughter, and/or mother-daughter experiences. Giving support may be a stressful or rewarding experience, and little is known about how family members perceive giving support amid problems or crises. Using a sample of 226 mother–child dyads (mother mean age = 75.04 years; child mean age = 49.57 years), we examine how mothers and their middle-aged children perceive giving support in the context of life problems. Actor–partner interdependence models tested whether associations between problems and perceptions of support are moderated by frequency of support given and if associations were stronger for daughters or sons. Children perceived giving support to their mother as more stressful when they had more of their own problems and gave high levels of support. Daughters, but not sons, considered helping their mother more stressful when their mother had more problems and they gave high levels of support. Distinctions between mother–son and mother–daughter dyads demonstrate the merit of a dyadic approach to understanding mother–child relationships. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cinema has embodied certain dramatic narrative representations since the beginning of its history. In these dramatic representations which stem from Aristotle's Poetics, male is treated as the subject and female characters take shape either via the male gaze or its influence. Also the status of the male determines living space of the female. When examined from this aspect the history of Turkish Cinema in general, like its examples in world cinema, and the recent era of Turkish Cinema in particular lean mostly on male stories. Senem Tüzen's movie MOTHERLAND was considered suitable to be examined for this study because on one hand, the movie unlike its contemporaries tells the story of a woman who goes back to her homeland with a different narration than the prevalent rural narrative, on the other hand Tüzen includes mother-daughter conflict to the narration. Based on this approach the mother-daughter conflict which forms a basis for the narrative of the movie is analysed within the scope of the archetypes of Carl Gustav Jung. In the first part of the study literature about conceptual approach of Carl Gustav Jung's archetypes is presented. Grounded in aspects of objectification theory, social learning theory, and attachment theory, we investigated the extent to which mothers' and daughters' self-objectification were related to one another's and also identified three potential intervening factors. Specifically, we hypothesized a (statistical) direct effect of mothers' self-objectification on that of their daughters' (H1), as well as investigated a conditional direct effect (i.e., maternal care) (H2) and two indirect effects (i.e., co-rumination and mothers' weight concerns) (H3) as intervening factors that may help explain the relationship between mothers' and daughters' self-objectification. A sample of 199 U.S. undergraduate women and their mothers completed an online survey; daughters and mothers mean ages were 19.42 and 50.15, respectively, with a majority of them reporting a normal body mass index (daughters: 23.05; mothers: 25.74) and being White/Caucasian (daughters: 79.4 %; mothers: 80.9 %). The results generally supported the hypotheses. First, H1 was confirmed: Mothers' and daughters' self-objectification were positively related to one another's. Second, perceived maternal care was found to moderate this relationship, such that daughters reported higher levels of self-objectification when they perceived their mothers to be less caring; thus, H2 was confirmed. Third, H3 was partially confirmed: Perceived co-rumination about weight with mothers, but not perceived mothers' weight-related concerns, was found to be a significant mediator. These results suggest that mothers can serve as protective or inhibitory factors in daughters' experience of self-objectification depending on mothers' level of care and their direct communication with their daughters' about their bodies. In this article, focusing on the analysis of Ruth Ozeki Lounsbury's 1995 firstperson documentary Halving the Bones: Making a Family Album?, I discuss the role of fiction and counter-memory in resisting the hegemonic practices that have marked Asian American history with distortions, omissions, and stereotypes. I show how Ozeki employs the fictional documentary medium to question hierarchies and categorizations and to reveal them as dispositifs of dominion especially concerning gender and race. The autobiographical project traces one hundred years of the "half-Japanese, half- American" filmmaker Ruth's maternal family history. Ozeki's imaginative in(ter)ventions in the personal, cultural and historical stories of her family end up creating a proliferation of voices and possibilities. I argue that the "mess" generated by introducing elements of doubt, multiplicity, recursiveness and invention in the narration of the Japanese and Japanese American women's lives is a productive, meaningful way to undermine the practices of categorization, racialization and gendering these women have been subjected to throughout history. Through the sprouting "mess" in her documentary, Ozeki on the one hand connects the filmmaker's present to the geopolitical, economic and gender dynamics in the past lives of Japanese migrants. On the other hand, subverting the androcentric power of image-making, Ozeki provides women with the opportunity to address each other in an engaged and creative way. Reimagining and representing the shifting condition and identity of Japanese American women in the twentieth century, Ozeki's subjective perspective carries a critical political dimension on screen and provides a present insight on the quest for home, belonging, identity and cultural legacy. This article tackles the relationship between food and word through the issue of obesity. It begins with a brief historical account of the emergence of the phenomenon and it proceeds with the narrative of a case. The treatment proved to be quite successful as the patient managed to overtake obesity as she went through group and individual treatment, which took place in the Psychology Department of a public hospital. Besides that, she also went through bariatric surgery. In the third part, the paper proposes a psychoanalytic reading through the discussion of three main deductions: the coexistence of two opposite desires, but with narcissistic support; oral / scopic coalescence promoting the materialization of the body into the word; the trespassing of the devastation between mother and daughter. Work on advice has concentrated on institutional settings where there are restrictions on roles, actions and their organisation. This article focuses on advice giving in mundane settings: interactions between mothers and their young-adult daughters in a corpus of 51 telephone calls. Analysis reveals a range of designs that can be ‘advice implicative’ including advice-implicative interrogatives and advice-implicative assessments. Recipients orient to the characteristic features these implicit forms share with more explicit advice: normative pressure on the recipient’s conduct and epistemic asymmetry between advisor and advisee. Advice-implicative actions orient to contingencies on the recipient’s ability or willingness to perform the target action. They also display varying degrees of entitlement over the recipient’s performance of the target action. Manipulating contingency and entitlement can soften or heighten both the normative thrust and the knowledge asymmetry of the advice giving. This analysis further discusses the distinction between the practices of advising, directing and requesting, and allows consideration of how action design connects to relationality between parties. This paper argues that in spite of the phenomenal economic progress made by India, the urban Indian Hindu woman still faces major challenges and hindrances in charting the course of her existence, some aspects of which are still located within a very traditional discourse. Women of particular age groups combine highly competitive careers in medicine, management, engineering, and other demanding professions with marriage and motherhood, while simultaneously juggling the eternal roles of the docile, hardworking daughter-in-law and the dutiful daughter. It is, yet again, another sacrifice of individual needs and time on the part of the urban Indian Hindu woman within a discourse that imposes constant adjustment and compromise from one's birth as a female child. The economic context might appear to be very different in this century, and the socio-cultural discourse may appear to have changed along with it, but the expectations and the status quo of the urban Hindu woman has not changed very much, given the underlying historical and socio-cultural discourse that is still extant. This study examined the relationship of separateness and connectedness in the mother-daughter relationship to sexual and nonsexual intimacy. The sample consisted of 100 university female students with a mean age of 21.83 years (SD = 2.21). Participants completed a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Personal Assessment of Intimacy Questionnaire (PAIR) and the Competence in Mother-Daughter Relationships Questionnaire (ICQ-M). Separateness was found to be a significant predictor of nonsexual intimacy. These findings revealed that separateness in the mother-daughter relationship has a significant relationship with intimacy in that the more assertive and independent an individual is, the more likely she is to develop the capacity for intimacy in future romantic relationships. Further, sexual development and sexual orientation significantly predict nonsexual intimacy when separateness is controlled, thus illustrating that these variables increase the predictability of nonsexual intimacy in the mother-daughter relationship. These findings may contribute to society through use in therapeutic settings to amplify clients' awareness of how their current relationship dynamics may stem, in part or in whole, from characteristics of their relationships with their mothers. Abstract: Background: For young women with breast cancer mothers might either be a source of support or of increased stress, depending on the premorbid relationship and on the psychological effect of the daughter's diagnosis on her mother. Objectives: To examine the effects of a breast cancer diagnosis on young women's relationships with their mothers and the possible support needs of these mothers from the daughters' perspective. Patients and methods: We developed and pre-tested a self-administered questionnaire on 10 survivors of breast cancer diagnosed ≤ age 40. Then, consecutive recurrence-free young women diagnosed with breast cancer were asked to complete the modified questionnaire. Results: Of 110 daughters approached from July/11 to May/12, 90 (82%) participated. In 11 cases (13%), the daughters had turned to their mothers before approaching anyone else. Of the 83 daughters who disclosed their diagnosis to their mothers, 76 (92%) stated their mothers had been emotionally and/or practically supportive, and 43 (54%) reported that the breast cancer diagnosis had a favorable impact on their relationship with their mothers. Of the 35 employed mothers, 26 had taken time off from work to support their daughters. Nineteen mothers, eight of whom had been living in a different country, had slept over or moved in with daughters during their treatment. Twenty-two daughters believed their mothers felt responsible to some extent for their developing breast cancer. Fifty-nine daughters indicated that health care professionals could help mothers by providing information pamphlets, education sessions, and linking to support groups. Conclusion: Mothers are an important source of support for young daughters with breast cancer, with the mother–daughter relationship frequently becoming closer after the diagnosis. However, the practical and emotional burden on mothers appears to be high. Future studies should address the effects of a breast cancer diagnosis in young daughters from the mothers' perspective, and the benefit of formal supports for these mothers. This paper describes the multi-methodological approach employed in a partial, situated, contingent and interpretive feminist political analysis of Catholic mothers and daughters. The study draws on a number of sources including transcripts of mother-daughter interviews, autobiographical anecdotes, photographs, music, icons of Catholicism and poetry. It is argued in this paper that a feminist multi-methodological approach is valuable to feminist research as it disrupts the linear and logocentric construct of traditional social science research. Moreover, a multi-methodological and multi-sourced approach opens up sites so that the mothers and daughters in this study could be positioned within specific histories and contexts, and provided with a space so that as women they could reconstruct themselves as self-referential subjects. Using Kaplan's and Habermas's theoretical frameworks of the transformational power of discourse and narration, this paper looks at mother-daughter bonding in Toni Morrisons Beloved Within these and other similar frameworks such as Lyotard's, Gidden's and Foucault's language is not merely an act of speaking/listening, but also the locus of agency or transformation in the act of narration itself. But its very role as an agency capable of bringing about transformation is fraught with inconsistencies and ambivalence which this paper highlights. The recuperative paradigm is focused upon in the context of mother-daughter bond and identification. First, the notion of recuperation is elaborated followed by an analysis in the context of Morrisons work. Through an analysis of mother-daughter bond in Beloved, the paper attempts to illustrate that the mother-daughter bond in Beloved is a classic example of the failure of the recuperative paradigm which entails the search for an ideal listener, and which the mother-daughter bond, due to the totalizing identification, fails to provide. Recruiting participants from underserved and marginalized communities for behavioral research is an essential yet challenging task. We examined participants' motivation to participate in a focus group about health communication and their beliefs about appropriate remuneration for participation. Twelve focus groups were conducted with low-income African American and Latina adolescent girls and African American women. We utilized a grounded theory approach and thematic analysis to examine views about research participation and remuneration. This study yielded interesting findings on the effect of mother-daughter and father-daughter relationships on drug refusal self-efficacy for urban African American girls between the ages of 11 and 14. The questionnaire consisted of assessments on the quality of the girls’ mother and father relationships and their perceived ability to refuse drugs. The quality of the father-daughter relationship significantly predicted drug refusal self-efficacy for urban African American girls. Implications of these findings are discussed. For many, adolescence is a time when it is difficult to stand in front of a mirror and say, “I like myself and I am competent.” Such a statement requires a supportive environment and self-knowledge. This research explored global self-esteem in a sample of 105 urban African American seniors that attended an all girls' Catholic high school. A ten item scale that measured participants' belief in their mothers' ability and willingness to protect and soothe them (attachment) explained 27% of the variance in global self-esteem. Two daughters undertake to “restory” their aging Jewish mothers. Their projects serve as a demystification of motherhood, as an insight into the ever-changing mother-daughter relationship, and as a way to “restore” a parent whose life story is being masked by the facade of aging. Kim Chernin's In My Mother's House (1983) chronicles the life of Rose Chernin, Communist activist, while Vivian Gornick's Fierce Attachments (1987) focuses on a woman who spent most of her life in a Bronx tenement. Both writers are children of powerful mothers to whom they are strongly connected, and their writing describes their ongoing struggle to separate from these women. Gornick and Chernin become the bearers of family histories which will be passed on to the next generation, and a “voice” for first-generation woman whose stories have never been told. In the present article, two case reports are used to examine the adult mother-daughter relationship from the point of view of the mother. The two mothers, in midlife, looked to their adult daughters to perform selfobject functions. The daughters of these patients felt threatened by their mother's desire for emotional dependence and had emotionally distanced themselves from their mothers. Emotional estrangement from their daughters had caused these patients to experience feelings of depression severe enough to seek treatment. The article describes the use of a conjoint mother-daughter session within the context of the mother's individual treatment to help these mothers to recognize the unresolved separation-individuation in their relationships with their daughters and to promote a healthier connection in the mother-daughter relationship.
