Abstract

In this paper, we present a physical modeling activity whose objective is to allow students to determine the differences between a disk and a sphere using pure scientific criteria. Thereunto, we reproduce the Sun-Earth-Moon system with low-cost materials and compare the illumination effects on the Moon considering two possible shapes for it (a sphere and a disk). The analysis is based on the shape of the Terminator line produced in each case as a function of the illumination angle. The results obtained are first discussed and then applied so that one can interpret the observed patterns in the illumination effects of other celestial bodies, such as Venus or even the Earth. Thereby, the activity can be very useful to unmask the unscientific idea of Flat Earth. The entire activity is easily replicable and it may be useful to promote a more realistic view of science and its methods.

Abstract

In this paper, the development of a 3D adaptive probabilistic explicit cracking model for concrete is reported. The contribution offered herein consists in a new adaptive mesh strategy designed to optimize the use of interface elements in probabilistic explicit cracking models. The proposed adaptive mesh procedure is markedly different from other strategies found in the literature, since it takes into account possible influences on the redistribution of stresses after cracking and can also be applied to purely deterministic cracking models. The process of obtaining the most appropriate adaptive mesh procedure involved the development and evaluation of three different adaptivity strategies. Two of these adaptivity strategies were shown to be inappropriate due to issues related to stress redistribution after cracking. The validation results demonstrate that the developed adaptive probabilistic model is capable of predicting the scale effect at a level similar to that experimentally observed, considering the tensile failure of plain concrete specimens. The results also show that different softening levels can be obtained. The proposed adaptive mesh strategy proved to be advantageous, being able to promote significant reductions in the simulation time in comparison with the classical strategy commonly used in probabilistic explicit cracking models. Abstract

The reduction of the green areas due to the growth of the built-up areas has affected the environmental quality in cities. Nevertheless, some uncertainties remain about the adequate amount of such areas in the urban landscape. This study aims at introducing a methodology to support analysis of green areas in urban neighborhoods. The methodological proposal was based on a fuzzy expert system (FES), a soft computing approach capable of dealing with uncertainties in complex multiple-criteria decision-making. As empirical research, some case studies to introduce and validate the proposed methodology were performed. An agglomerative hierarchical clustering, followed by a Kruskal-Wallis test and multiple pairwise comparisons using the Conover-Iman procedure (significance 0.05), demonstrated that the FES was able to provide outcomes consistent with hypothetical situations, simulated as ideal and critical conditions of green areas. In conclusion, our findings indicate that the methodological proposal based on FES is a promising tool for complex case-by-case analysis in urban neighborhoods.

Abstract

Objective: The long-term survival differences between endovascular repair (EVAR) and open repair for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) and specifically the impact of age on these differences remain a topic of debate. Therefore, we compared the long-term mortality between EVARand open abdominal aneurysm repair for patients of different ages. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of prospectively collected data from patients undergoing elective EVAR or open repair for infrarenal AAAs within the Vascular Quality Initiative multinational clinical registry (2003-2021). The primary outcome was long-term all-cause mortality comparing EVAR and open repair for patients aged less than 65 years, between 65 and 79 years, and those aged 80 and older. In addition, we investigated the interaction between repair modality and 10-year hazard of mortality for sex, aneurysm diameter, and several preoperative comorbid conditions within each age category. To account for the nonrandom assignment of treatment, we used propensity scores and inverse probability weighted Cox proportional hazard analysis. Results: We identified 48,074 patients undergoing elective infrarenal abdominal aneurysm repair (89% EVAR) within the study period, including 7940 patients aged less than 65, 29,555 aged between 65 and 79, and 10,579 aged 80 years or more. EVAR was associated with a higher propensity score-adjusted long-term hazard of mortality compared with open repair in the cohort aged less than 65 years (hazard ratio [HR], 1.39; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.04-1.86; P = .026). The mortality was similar in the age cohort between 65 and 79 (HR, 0.94; 95% CI, 0.79-1.10; P = .43), whereas EVAR was associated with a lower hazard of mortality in the cohort aged 80 years or more (HR, 0.63; 95% CI, 0.46-0.86; P = .004).
