Abstract

The article discusses damages of essential tribological associations in crankshaft and piston systems of large power two-stroke engines used as main engines, which take place during transport tasks performed by those ships. Difficulties are named which make preventing those damages impossible, despite the fact that the technical state of engines of this type is identified with the aid of complex diagnostic systems making use of advanced computer technology. It is demonstrated that one of causes of the damages is the lack of research activities oriented on recognising random properties of the loads leading to those damages. A proposal is made for the loads acting at a given time t on tribological associations in crankshaft and piston systems of internal combustion engines used as main engines to be considered as random variables Qt. At the same time the loads examined within a given time interval tr ≤ t ≤ tz would be considered stochastic processes {Q(t): t ≥ 0}. Essential properties of the loads of the abovementioned tribological associations are named and explained by formulating hypotheses which need empirical verification. Interval estimation is proposed for estimating the expected value E(Qt) of the load Qt acting at time t. A relation is indicated between the mechanical load and the thermal load acting on tribological associations in the ship main engine crankshaft and piston system. A suggestion is formulated that a stochastic form of the relation between these types of load is to be searched for, rather than statistic relation, and a proposal is made to measure the intensity (strength) of the stochastic relation using the Czuprow’s convergence coefficient.

Abstract

This paper presents the results of the fast neutron irradiation (E$_n$ > 0.5MeV) of an EJ-276 scintillator performed in the MARIA research reactor with fluence up to 5.3$\times$10$^{15}$ particles/cm$^2$. In our work, four samples with size $\phi$25.4~mm$\times$5~mm were tested. The changes in the light yield, emission and absorption spectrum and neutron/gamma discrimination using PuBe source before and after irradiation are presented. The figure of merit in neutron/gamma discrimination based on the charge integration method for different neutron fluences and different short gate integration times are determined., Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures

Abstract

This paper presents the results of the proton irradiation of silicon photomulipliers (SiPMs) by mono-energetic 170 MeV protons with fluence up to 4.6$\times$10$^{9}$ particles/cm$^2$. In our work, three types of silicon photodetectors from Hamamatsu with areas 3$\times$3 mm$^2$ and different subpixel sizes of 25$\times$25 $\mu$m$^2$, 50$\times$50 $\mu$m$^2$, and 75$\times$75 $\mu$m$^2$ were used. The changes in the SiPM dark count rate (DCR) spectrum before and after irradiation in temperatures in the range of 20 $^\circ$C to -65 $^\circ$C are presented. The influence of the DCR changes on the energy resolution of the 662 keV gamma line from the $^{137}$Cs for a non-irradiated GAGG:Ce (1$\%$) scintillator is investigated. The time period of usability of the SiPM detector irradiated by protons in cosmic space was estimated.

Abstract

Especially in periods of crises, economists try to explain why some economies suffer negative consequences more strongly than others. In order to explain these differential effects, two economic categories known as economic vulnerability and economic resilience can be used. Hence, the aim of the paper is to undertake a critical reflection on the interrelated categories of economic vulnerability and resilience to shocks. The paper analyses these categories from a theoretical perspective and identifies the factors that shape each of them. It then attempts to measure the economic vulnerability and resilience of selected European countries using two synthetic variables. Based on these, a classification of countries in terms of economic vulnerability and resilience was made. The results achieved provide a good starting point for a more detailed study of the paths of crises and their consequences in individual countries.
