Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations have risen steadily and have induced a decrease of the averaged surface ocean pH by 0.1 units, corresponding to an increase in ocean acidity of about 30 %. In addition to ocean warming, ocean acidification poses a tremendous challenge to some marine organisms, especially calcifiers. The need for long-term oceanic observations of pH and temperature is a key element to assess the vulnerability of marine communities and ecosystems to these pressures. Nearshore productive environments, where a large majority of shellfish farming activities are conducted, are known to present pH levels as well as amplitudes of daily and seasonal variations that are much larger than those observed in the open ocean. Yet, to date, there are very few coastal observation sites where these parameters are measured simultaneously and at high frequency. To bridge this gap, an observation network was initiated in 2021 in the framework of the CocoriCO(2) project. Six sites were selected along the French Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines based on their importance in terms of shellfish production and the presence of high- and low-frequency monitoring activities. At each site, autonomous pH sensors were deployed, both inside and outside shellfish production areas, next to high-frequency CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth) probes operated through two operating monitoring networks. pH sensors were set to an acquisition rate of 15 min, and discrete seawater samples were collected biweekly in order to control the quality of pH data (laboratory spectrophotometric measurements) as well as to measure total alkalinity and dissolved inorganic carbon concentrations for full characterization of the carbonate system. IntroductionWhile crucial to ensuring the production of accurate and high-quality data—and to avoid erroneous conclusions—data quality control (QC) in environmental monitoring datasets is still poorly documented. MethodsWith a focus on annual inter-laboratory comparison (ILC) exercises performed in the context of the French coastal monitoring SOMLIT network, we share here a pragmatic approach to QC, which allows the calculation of systematic and random errors, measurement uncertainty, and individual performance. After an overview of the different QC actions applied to fulfill requirements for quality and competence, we report equipment, accommodation, design of the ILC exercises, and statistical methodology specially adapted to small environmental networks (<20 laboratories) and multivariate datasets. Finally, the expanded uncertainty of measurement for 20 environmental variables routinely measured by SOMLIT from discrete sampling—including Essential Ocean Variables—is provided. Results, Discussion, ConclusionThe examination of the temporal variations (2001–2021) in the repeatability, reproducibility, and trueness of the SOMLIT network over time confirms the essential role of ILC exercises as a tool for the continuous improvement of data quality in environmental monitoring datasets.

The Mediterranean region is undergoing an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme rainfall events, resulting in terrestrial runoffs that can affect aquatic environments in coastal regions. The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of terrestrial runoff on natural coastal planktonic assemblages. For this purpose, an in situ mesocosm experiment was conducted in May 2021 in the Mediterranean Thau Lagoon. A terrestrial runoff event was simulated in duplicate mesocosms by adding natural forest soil that was left to maturate naturally for two weeks in river water. After the addition of maturated soil, the abundance and diversity within the planktonic food web, from viruses to metazooplankton, were monitored for 18 days. The addition of maturated soil to the terrestrial runoff treatment greatly depressed the light availability in the mesocosms and potentially enhanced flocculation and sedimentation in the mesocosms, resulting in an immediate negative effect on phytoplankton, decreasing the chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration by 70% for 12 days. Afterward, remineralized nutrient in the terrestrial runoff treatment induced a subsequent positive effect on phytoplankton, which resulted in a diatom bloom and an increase in picophytoplankton and cyanobacteria abundance toward the end of the experiment. Overall, the Chl-a concentration was 30% lower in the terrestrial runoff treatment over the 18 days of experiment, whereas bacteria were 15% more abundant than in the control. This suggests that over the course of the experiment, the addition of maturated soil favoured bacteria instead of phytoplankton at the base of the planktonic food web. The addition of the maturated soil was detrimental for all protozooplankton groups and mixotrophic dinoflagellates, but seemed to favour metazooplankton, notably mollusk larvae, copepod nauplii, and rotifers. In recent decades, the increase in terrestrial inputs to freshwater and coastal ecosystems, especially occurring at northern latitudes, has led to a process of water color darkening known as “brownification.” To assess how brownification affects plankton community composition and functioning in northern coastal areas, an in situ mesocosm experiment using a highly colored humic substance to simulate a brownification event was performed in a North Atlantic bay (Hopavågen, Norway) in August 2019. Manual sampling for analyses of nutrient concentrations, phytoplankton pigments and zooplankton abundances was combined with high-frequency (every 15 min) monitoring of key environmental variables to investigate the response of the plankton community in terms of oxygen metabolism and community composition. In response to brownification, the oxygen gross primary production (GPP) and community respiration (R) slowed down significantly, by almost one-third. However, GPP and R both decreased to the same extent; thus, the oxygen metabolic balance was not affected. Moreover, the chlorophyll-a concentration significantly decreased under brownification, by 9% on average, and the chemotaxonomic pigment composition of the phytoplankton changed, indicating their acclimation to the reduced light availability. In addition, brownification seemed to favor appendicularians, the dominant mesozooplankton group in the mesocosms, which potentially contributed to lowering the phytoplankton biomass. In conclusion, the results of this in situ mesocosm experiment suggest that brownification could induce significant changes in phytoplankton and zooplankton community composition and significantly alter the overall oxygen metabolism of plankton communities in a northern Atlantic bay.

To assess the response of a natural plankton community to the future scenario of a warming of +3°C predicted for coastal Mediterranean regions, an in situ mesocosm experiment was carried out over 19 days in a Mediterranean coastal lagoon in 2018. During this experiment, a phytoplankton bloom occurred and the abundances of several cytometric groups of phytoplankton (cyanobacteria, picophytoplankton and nanophytoplankton) and bacteria (low- and high-nucleic acid bacteria), as well as their growth and grazing mortality rates and their carbon biomass, were studied over the course of the experiment. Experimental warming led to a significant reduction of 47% of the phytoplankton biomass in average, based on Chl-a concentrations. This reduction was also observed for nanophytoplankton abundances during the whole experiment and for eukaryotic picophytoplankton only during the bloom period. This result coincided with a significant decrease in orthophosphate concentrations under warming during the prebloom and bloom periods simultaneous to an increase in bacterial abundances. At the same time, the higher growth rates of bacteria and the lower ones of phytoplankton observed at the beginning of the bloom could suggest that competition between phytoplankton and bacteria for orthophosphate might have contributed to the phytoplankton biomass decrease under warming. In addition, higher grazing mortality rates of phytoplankton groups under warming, notably nanophytoplankton at the end of the bloom and in postbloom (by 59 to 626%), as well as eukaryotic picophytoplankton over the course of the experiment (by 58 to 255%) could also have contributed to the lower phytoplankton biomass under warming. Based on these results, estimations of average phytoplankton carbon biomass production and transfer showed reductions of 42 and 45%, respectively, under warming, whereas those of bacteria were enhanced by 13 and 8%, respectively. The abundances of 17 cytometric groups encompassing four groups of bacteria, three groups of cyanobacteria, six groups of eukaryotic picophytoplankton (<2–3 µm), and four groups of small eukaryotic nanophytoplankton (between 3 and 6 µm) were studied in the Thau Lagoon across different seasonal conditions. Among them, the growth (µ) and mortality rates due to grazing (g) of 12 groups of bacteria, cyanobacteria, and eukaryotic pico- and nanophytoplankton were simultaneously studied in the Thau Lagoon via four dilution experiments across different seasonal conditions. The abundances of heterotrophic flagellates and ciliates and their potential predators were studied and linked to prey mortality. Bacteria were more active than phytoplankton and displayed the highest growth and grazing mortality rates. Most studied groups had g:µ ratios > 1, suggesting that predators efficiently grazed and transferred these preys. Surprisingly, the observed variations in predator abundance across seasons did not necessarily correspond with changes in grazing pressure. The significant positive relationship found between water temperature and bacterial grazing mortality rates and the reverse trend observed for larger eukaryotic prey suggested that warmer water increases small prokaryote transfer to higher trophic levels but disadvantages larger eukaryotic prey transfer.

Temperature and light mainly drive seasonal dynamics of microbial planktonic diversity in coastal ecosystems; however, disentangling their effects is challenging because they are always tightly coupled. Shallow coastal lagoons exhibit intense temperature changes throughout the year and high interannual temperature fluctuations, offering the opportunity to study temperature effects on microbial community diversity and succession. Weekly sampling at 16s and 18s rRNA gene OTU diversity associated with high-frequency meteorological and hydrological monitoring was conducted in the northwestern Mediterranean Thau Lagoon (South of France) from winter to spring in 2015 and 2016. While 2015 was a normal climatic year, 2016 had the warmest winter ever recorded in southern France. Water temperature was found to be the main driver of community diversity and succession from winter to spring. During the normal temperature year of 2015, bacterial communities were dominated by Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes, archaeal community by Thaumarachaeota, and unicellular eukaryotes mainly by picochlorophytes (Bathycoccus prasinos, Micromonas bravo, and Ostreococcus spp.) in winter and diatoms (Chaetoceros spp.) in spring. The unusually warm year 2016 benefited Actinobacteria (ML602J-51), Cyanobacteria (Synechococcus), the picoeukaryote Ostreococcus spp., and several dinoflagellates. Our results suggest that in a warmer ocean, smaller organisms will dominate microbial communities in shallow coastal waters, potentially affecting ecosystem services.

Understanding how aquatic ecosystems respond to perturbations has emerged as a crucial way to predict the future of these ecosystems and to assess their capacity to produce oxygen and store atmospheric carbon. In this context, in situ mesocosm experiments are a useful approach for simulating disturbances and observing changes in planktonic communities over time and under controlled conditions. Within mesocosm experiments, the estimation of fundamental parameters such as gross primary production (GPP), net community production (NCP), and respiration (R) allows the evaluation of planktonic metabolic responses to a perturbation. The continuous estimation of these metabolic parameters in real time and at high frequency is made possible by employing noninvasive automated sensors in the water column. However, some uncertainties and methodological questions about the estimation of daytime respiration remain to be addressed for this method, and notably to address the fact that respiration could be significantly higher during the day than during the night. In this study, data from two in situ mesocosm experiments performed in fall and spring in a coastal Mediterranean area were used to develop a new method of estimating daytime respiration, and in turn daily GPP, R, and NCP, by considering the maximum instantaneous R, and that takes into account the variability of the coupling between day–night and dissolved oxygen cycles. This new method was compared with the Winkler incubation technique and with another existing method. Results showed that using this existing method, daytime R was significantly underestimated relative to estimates obtained with the newly proposed method.
