Abstract

Abstract Background Because of COVID-19 pandemic, families across the world are experiencing new stressors that threaten their health, and economic well-being. Such a stress may jeopardize parents-children relationship. We aim to investigate the magnitude of child physical maltreatment (CPM) by parents in Egypt during the COVID-19 pandemic, to relate it to parents’ stress, and to identify other potential risk factors. Methods This cross-sectional study assessed parent-reported CPM and their personal experience of stress, depression, and anxiety among a sample of Egyptian parents using an electronic survey. It included sociodemographic data, Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21), and the Child physical maltreatment scale (CPMS). We also briefly assessed COVID-19 -related data. Results Out of 404 respondents, (62.9%) and (32.9%) reported performing minor and severe CPM toward their children during the past 3 months, respectively. The age of youngest child, and anxiety score were significantly correlated with both minor and severe forms of CPM. While number of children, and online education system ratings were only significantly correlated with severe CPM. Parental definition of CPM was significantly correlated to minor CPM, but not to severe CPM. Conclusions CPM by parents is not uncommon in Egypt, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. These findings highlight the importance of regular support and intervention that help parents learn parenting skills and the use of non-violent child disciplining methods.

14. Disordered eating behaviour in adolescents with type 1 diabetes on continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion; relation to body image, depression and glycemic control

Abstract

Plain English summary Disordered eating behaviour is a significant morbidity among people with type 1 diabetes. It is associated with poor metabolic control and diabetes related complications even when the full diagnostic criteria of an eating disorder are not met. There is conflicting data in the literature regarding the prevalence of disordered eating behaviour in type 1 diabetes. The current study found that disordered eating behaviour is prevalent among 10% of the studied adolescents with type 1 diabetes. It was found to be more severe and frequent among those on basal-bolus insulin regimen than those on continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion. Moreover, it was correlated with depression, poor glycemic control, poor body image and long diabetes duration. Thus further studies are needed to verify the role of continuous glucose monitoring in the management of DEB among those with T1D.

Abstract

In this article, a uniform helically arranged dielectric resonator array can generate Orbital Angular Momentum waves (OAM) causing a conversion of OAM mode orders m from an incoming mode min to an outgoing mode mout. The operating frequency is set as 10 GHz to facilitate the measuring process. This new approach provides additional OAM values per digit in the RFID technology according to the excited OAM modes mn ∈ {... , -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, ...} instead of the conventional binary values bn ∈ {0, 1}. Thus, more information content is revealed. Through the OAM concept, a m1m2 2-digits OAM coded tag is obtained upon the employment of two uniform helically arranged cylindrical dielectric resonator arrays operating at two different frequencies f1 = 10 GHz, and f2 = 11 GHz. Each array has 8 DRs but with different radius yielding a reduction of the mutual coupling between the varied circular arrays. The interaction between the phase delayed radiation of each DR element in the array generates different vortex waves with corresponding OAM mode orders. In order to achieve the correct phase delay, the elevation of each DR is specified by the desirable OAM mode order, the number of elements and the propagation wavelength. At first, the generation of OAM mode orders -1, 2, and -3 is carried out. Then, mode conversion from 0 to -1, +1 to -2, -1 to 0, +2 to -3, and -2 to +1 are depicted. After that, two simulated examples of 2-digits OAM coded tags with the code {-1, 1} and {-2, 0} are presented. A conversion of mode 0 to mode 1 has been simulated and also measured, where an additional metal sheet is used to evaluate the distortion in the OAM modes. As a result, this study demonstrates that the uniform helically arranged DR arrays can convert the incoming OAM mode order into another one, where the clutter from broadside direction is rejected due to the Butler matrix (BM), which interferes the clutter destructively.

Abstract

Background/Objectives Children with obesity and those with type 1diabetes (T1D) exhibit subtle neurocognitive deficits, the mechanism of which remains unknown. α-synuclein plays a fundamental role in neurodegeneration. Moreover, its role in glucose and lipids metabolism is emerging. This study aims to assess whether α-synuclein is correlated with the degree of neurodegeneration in children with obesity and those with T1D in comparison to healthy controls and correlate it to various neurocognitive and metabolic parameters. Subjects/Methods Forty children with obesity, 40 children with T1D and 40 matched-healthy controls were assessed for anthropometric measurements and blood-pressure. Cognitive evaluation was performed using Stanford–Binet scale and Barkley Deficits in Executive Functioning (EF) Scale-Children and Adolescents. α-synuclein, fasting lipids and glucose were measured with calculation of the homeostatic model of insulin-resistance and estimated-glucose disposal rate. Results Children with obesity and those with T1D had significantly higher α-synuclein (p p = 0.001) than controls. α-synuclein was negatively correlated to total IQ (p p = 0.001), and positively correlated with total EF percentile (p = 0.009 and p = 0.001) and EF symptom count percentile (p = 0.005 and p p = 0.028), diabetes-duration (p = 0.006), HbA1C% (p = 0.034), total IQ (p = 0.013) and EF symptom count percentile (p = 0.003) among children with T1D, and to diastolic blood-pressure percentile (p = 0.013), waist/hip ratio SDS (p = 0.007), total EF percentile (P = 0.033) and EF symptom count percentile (p Conclusion α-synuclein could have a mechanistic role in neurocognitive deficit among children with obesity and T1D.

Abstract

The present study dealt with the formation of the personality of the child within the most important institutions of social upbringing, namely: the family and the school, which was exposed to the concepts of personality, family and school, and then examined the determinants of personality structure and theories. The study dealt with the characteristics of the family and its functions and the method of social upbringing practiced in the family and how this affects the growth of the child's personality properly. So that the existing relationships within the family and meet the child's psychological and cognitive needs contribute mainly to building the child's personality and development positively. Then the research dealt with the educational institution represented by the school and the functions it should undertake to meet the basic needs of the child and thus contribute to the development of personality. Where the school integrates the individual in the community and works to develop the child's talents and capacity building and give him the opportunity to express himself and enhance his self-confidence through his participation and roles as a member of a group. The school also plays an important role in developing children's creative spirit. The study also addressed the negative effects that authoritarian methods can have on the relationship with students, which are based on violence and confiscation. The student is placed in the negative recipient location by depriving him of opportunities for expression, participation and analysis, which impairs the growth of personality and normal and healthy development. The study concluded with some suggestions and recommendations that emphasized the need for the family and the school to perform their functions in educational and psychological ways that meet the needs of children and contribute to building their personalities in a proper manner

Abstract

COVID-19 pandemic has heavily burdened healthcare systems throughout the world, causing substantial mental distress to medical professionals. We aim to investigate the associated traumatic stress in a sample of practicing physicians in Egypt during the COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-sectional study assessed depression, and Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among a sample of Egyptian physicians using an electronic survey. It included demographic and practice-related data, PTSD Checklist - Civilian Version (PCL-C) and the nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Of the 124 respondents, 66.9% were at high risk for depression and 37.9% met criteria for diagnosis of PTSD. Female gender and perceived work-related stress were significantly associated with PTSD. PTSD and depression severity scores were positively correlated. These findings highlight the importance of timely mental support and intervention for medical workers.

Abstract

The inclusion of both fibre and solid lubricants into polymers may provide a potential solution to maximise their tribological and mechanical performances. This study investigates the effect of incorporating flax fibres and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) reinformcements in epoxy matrix composites on their tensile, microhardness and adhesive wear behaviour. Dry adhesive wear experiments were conducted using a block-on-ring (BOR) test rig against a stainless steel ring. Adhesive wear performance was evaluated considering the effect of the volume fraction (V f ) of flax fibre (0, 15, 20 and 25 V f . %) and different weight fractions of GNPs (1.5 and 3 wt.%). Different applied loads in the 15–60 N range, covering the mild and severe wear regions, were used. The worn surfaces were examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results revealed that flax fibre potently improved the stiffness and tensile strength of epoxy. Increase in V f of flax fibre showed a positive tendency to improve the wear resistance of epoxy; however, with an insignificant change in the coefficient of friction (COF). More interestingly, heat distortion temperature (HDT) was found to be the main key parameter controlling the wear behaviours of the composites. SEM observations indicated that severe wear signs – including detachment, fragmentation and fibre debonding – were noted when the interface temperature reached the heat distortion temperature of the epoxy. On the other hand, the inclusion of GNPs reduced the interface temperature during sliding as well as the COF of the flax/epoxy composite. Ultimately, incorporation of flax fibres and GNPs enhanced both mechanical and tribological performances of the eco-composites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
