We have analyzed the prompt and afterglow characteristics of the intermediate luminosity burst ``GRB 210210A". Our prompt emission analysis indicates that GRB 210210A is among the softest long GRBs detected by the Swift-BAT. The time-integrated prompt emission spectrum of GRB 210210A is aptly described by a power law function with an exponential cutoff. The spectral peak energy (E$_{p,z}$) in rest-frame and the E$_{\rm \gamma, iso}$ for this GRB marginally satisfy the 2$\sigma$ Amati correlation, a common feature observed in low/intermediate luminosity GRBs. Notably, an early bump is observed in the Swift-XRT light curve (a rare feature); the optical afterglow light curve, on the other hand, appears to follow a power law decay. However, due to the lack of sufficient early optical observations, we cannot completely rule out the possibility of an early bump in the optical light curve. For the bump observed in the early X-ray light curve, we calculated parameters such as peak time, rise time, decay time, and bulk Lorentz factor ($\Gamma_{0}$ $\sim$ 156), which perfectly satisfy the correlation between the parameters of the onset of the afterglow in GRBs. Both the optical and X-ray (including our observations) light curves exhibit a chromatic break in the late afterglow. We introduce a generative pretained transformer (GPT) designed to learn the measurement outcomes of a neutral atom array quantum computer. Based on a vanilla transformer, our encoder-decoder architecture takes as input the interacting Hamiltonian, and outputs an autoregressive sequence of qubit measurement probabilities. Its performance is studied in the vicinity of a quantum phase transition in Rydberg atoms in a square lattice array. We explore the ability of the architecture to generalize, by producing groundstate measurements for Hamiltonian parameters not seen in the training set. We focus on examples of physical observables obtained from inference on three different models, trained in fixed compute time on a single NVIDIA A100 GPU. These can act as benchmarks for the scaling of larger RydbergGPT models in the future. Finally, we provide RydbergGPT open source, to aid in the development of foundation models based off of a wide variety of quantum computer interactions and data sets in the future., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Future detection of high-redshift gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) will be an important tool for studying the early Universe. Fast and accurate redshift estimation for detected GRBs is key for encouraging rapid follow-up observations by ground- and space-based telescopes. Low-redshift dusty interlopers pose the biggest challenge for GRB redshift estimation using broad photometric bands, as their high extinction can mimic a high-redshift GRB. To assess false alarms of high-redshift GRB photometric measurements, we simulate and fit a variety of GRBs using phozzy, a simulation code developed to estimate GRB photometric redshifts, and test the ability to distinguish between high- and low-redshift GRBs when using simultaneously observed photometric bands. We run the code with the wavelength bands and instrument parameters for the Photo-z Infrared Telescope (PIRT), an instrument designed for the Gamow mission concept. We explore various distributions of host galaxy extinction as a function of redshift, and their effect on the completeness and purity of a high-redshift GRB search with the PIRT. We find that for assumptions based on current observations, the completeness and purity range from $\sim 82$ to $88\%$ and from $\sim 84$ to $>99\%$, respectively. For the priors optimized to reduce false positives, only $\sim 0.6\%$ of low-redshift GRBs will be mistaken as a high-redshift one, corresponding to $\sim 1$ false alarm per 500 detected GRBs., Comment: 14 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Programmable quantum simulators based on Rydberg atom arrays are a fast-emerging quantum platform, bringing together long coherence times, high-fidelity operations, and large numbers of interacting qubits deterministically arranged in flexible geometries. Today's Rydberg array devices are demonstrating their utility as quantum simulators for studying phases and phase transitions in quantum matter. In this paper, we show that unprocessed and imperfect experimental projective measurement data can be used to enhance in silico simulations of quantum matter, by improving the performance of variational Monte Carlo simulations. As an example, we focus on data spanning the disordered-to-checkerboard transition in a $16 \times 16$ square lattice array [S. Ebadi et al. Nature 595, 227 (2021)] and employ data-enhanced variational Monte Carlo to train powerful autoregressive wavefunction ans\"atze based on recurrent neural networks (RNNs). We observe universal improvements in the convergence times of our simulations with this hybrid training scheme. Notably, we also find that pre-training with experimental data enables relatively simple RNN ans\"atze to accurately capture phases of matter that are not learned with a purely variational training approach. Our work highlights the promise of hybrid quantum--classical approaches for large-scale simulation of quantum many-body systems, combining autoregressive language models with experimental data from existing quantum devices., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Long duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are powerful cosmic explosions, signaling the death of massive stars. Among them, GRB 221009A is by far the brightest burst ever observed. Due to its enormous energy ($E_\textrm{iso}\!\approx$10$^{55}$ erg) and proximity ($z\!\approx$0.15), GRB 221009A is an exceptionally rare event that pushes the limits of our theories. We present multi-wavelength observations covering the first three months of its afterglow evolution. The X-ray brightness decays as a power-law with slope $\approx\!t^{-1.66}$, which is not consistent with standard predictions for jetted emission. We attribute this behavior to a shallow energy profile of the relativistic jet. A similar trend is observed in other energetic GRBs, suggesting that the most extreme explosions may be powered by structured jets launched by a common central engine., Comment: Submitted version. 53 pages, 9 figures, 6 tables

Rydberg atom arrays are programmable quantum simulators capable of preparing interacting qubit systems in a variety of quantum states. Due to long experimental preparation times, obtaining projective measurement data can be relatively slow for large arrays, which poses a challenge for state reconstruction methods such as tomography. Today, novel groundstate wavefunction ans\"atze like recurrent neural networks (RNNs) can be efficiently trained not only from projective measurement data, but also through Hamiltonian-guided variational Monte Carlo (VMC). In this paper, we demonstrate how pretraining modern RNNs on even small amounts of data significantly reduces the convergence time for a subsequent variational optimization of the wavefunction. This suggests that essentially any amount of measurements obtained from a state prepared in an experimental quantum simulator could provide significant value for neural-network-based VMC strategies., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

The observed durations of prompt gamma-ray emission from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are often used to infer the progenitors and energetics of the sources. Inaccurate duration measurements will have a significant impact on constraining the processes powering the bursts. The "tip-of-the-iceberg" effect describes how the observed signal is lost into background noise; lower instrument sensitivity leads to higher measurement bias. In this study, we investigate how observing conditions, such as the number of enabled detectors, background level, and incident angle of the source relative to the detector plane, affect the measured duration of GRB prompt emission observed with the Burst Alert Telescope on board the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory (Swift/BAT). We generate "simple-pulse" light curves from an analytical fast rise exponential decay function and from a sample of eight real GRB light curves. We fold these through the Swift/BAT instrument response function to simulate light curves Swift/BAT would have observed for specific observing conditions. We find duration measurements are highly sensitive to observing conditions and the incident angle of the source has the highest impact on measurement bias. In most cases duration measurements of synthetic light curves are significantly shorter than the true burst duration. For the majority of our sample, the percentage of duration measurements consistent with the true duration is as low as ~25%-45%. The Gamow Explorer will use Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) to: 1) probe the high redshift universe (z > 6) when the first stars were born, galaxies formed and Hydrogen was reionized; and 2) enable multi-messenger astrophysics by rapidly identifying Electro-Magnetic (IR/Optical/X-ray) counterparts to Gravitational Wave (GW) events. GRBs have been detected out to z ~ 9 and their afterglows are a bright beacon lasting a few days that can be used to observe the spectral fingerprints of the host galaxy and intergalactic medium to map the period of reionization and early metal enrichment. Gamow Explorer is optimized to quickly identify high-z events to trigger follow-up observations with JWST and large ground-based telescopes. A wide field of view Lobster Eye X-ray Telescope (LEXT) will search for GRBs and locate them with arc-minute precision. When a GRB is detected, the rapidly slewing spacecraft will point the 5 photometric channel Photo-z Infra-Red Telescope (PIRT) to identify high redshift (z > 6) long GRBs within 100s and send an alert within 1000s of the GRB trigger. An L2 orbit provides > 95% observing efficiency with pointing optimized for follow up by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and ground observatories. The predicted Gamow Explorer high-z rate is >10 times that of the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. The instrument and mission capabilities also enable rapid identification of short GRBs and their afterglows associated with GW events. We study the high-energy properties of GRB 181123B, a short gamma-ray burst (sGRB) at redshift $z\approx$1.75. We show that, despite its nominal short duration with $T_{90}<$2 s, this burst displays evidence of a temporally extended emission (EE) at high energies and that the same trend is observed in the majority of sGRBs at $z\gtrsim$1. We discuss the impact of instrumental selection effects on the GRB classification, stressing that the measured $T_{90}$ is not an unambiguous indicator of the burst physical origin. By examining their environment (e.g. stellar mass, star formation, offset distribution), we find that these high-$z$ sGRBs share many properties of long GRBs at a similar distance and are consistent with a short-lived progenitor system. If produced by compact binary mergers, these sGRBs with EE may be easier to localize at large distances and herald a larger population of sGRBs in the early universe., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables. GX 339-4 is an unusual black hole candidate in that it is a persistent source, being detected by X-ray telescopes most of the time, but it also has nova-like flaring states. In 1996 we performed radio, optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray observations of GX 339-4 when it was in a hard state (= soft X-ray low state). As part of our multiwavelength campaign of GX 339-4 observations in 1996 we present our radio, X-ray, and gamma-ray observations made in July, when the source was in a hard state (= soft X-ray low state). The radio observations were made at the time when there was a possible radio jet. We show that the radio spectrum was flat and significantly variable, and that the radio spectral shape and amplitude at this time were not anomalous for this source. Daily light curves from our pointed observation July 9-23 using OSSE, from BATSE, and from the ASM on RXTE also show that there was no significant change in the X- and gamma-ray flux or hardness during the time the possible radio jet-like feature was seen. The higher energy portion of our pointed RXTE observation made July 26 can be equally well fit using simple power law times exponential (PLE) and Sunyaev-Titarchuk (ST) functions. An additional soft component is required, as well as a broad emission feature centered on 6.4 keV. This may be an iron line that is broadened by orbital Doppler motions and/or scattering off a hot medium. Its equivalent width is 600 eV. Our simplistic continuum fitting does not require an extra reflection component. Both a PLE and a ST model also fit our OSSE spectrum on its own. Although the observations are not quite simultaneous, combining the RXTE and CGRO spectra we find that the PLE model easily fits the joint spectrum.
