1. Anticlerical illustrations and visual satire in 'anti-Jewish affairs'

Abstract

This thesis investigates the expression of anticlerical ideas in visual satire of 'anti-Jewish' political affairs in France between 1880 and 1906. Focusing predominantly on the Dreyfus polemic in Third Republican France, it responds to the following questions: what anticlerical ideas were articulated in the cartoons and illustrations? Why were they being expressed? How were these represented visually? The role of the Church and the religious press, secularisation and laicisation, notions of identity, leftist intellectual hubs, and how the clergy were represented are examined in the satirical art. Antimilitary ideas, a key theme in Dreyfusard protests, are also scrutinised in the art. Images from periodicals, newspapers, posters, postcards and book illustrations are examined from the period in question as well as material drawn from anti-Jewish controversies between 1840 and 1914. Henri-Gabriel Ibels' work forms a major component of the data which incorporates Dreyfusard and anti-Dreyfusard satirical art. The main pillar has a supplementary dimension in discerning whether a flow of ideas existed between Ibels' work and leading Dreyfusard, Emile Zola. Zola's open letters à la jeunesse and à la France are used as main sources to his thinking. A secondary pillar interrogates the polemical art to examine competing representations of the Jewish individual and Jewishness amidst the socio-political tensions of modernising Europe. The study decodes the visual tropes and narratives to 'other' the Jew at this formative moment in the history of the French nation-state.

The primary outcome was immunogenicity to the second anti-TNF agent, defined at any timepoint as an anti-TNF antibody concentration ≥9 AU/ml for infliximab and ≥6 AU/ml for adalimumab. Abstract

Residential aged care facilities (RACFs) face severe challenges in the provision of high-quality end of life care. A pilot of a nurse-led end-of-life palliative care consultative service (CiMaS) supporting RACFs was conducted in three RACFs in the West Moreton Region of Queensland, Australia, from May 2018. We conducted a mixed method evaluation comprising: a chart audit of deaths in the 12 months before and after the intervention; focus groups with RACF staff; and interviews with facility directors, primary family members and GPs. Quantitative and Qualitative data were assessed separately with statistical and thematic analyses respectively. The RACFs cared for 277 residents. There were 24 pre-intervention deaths and 44 in the intervention period (28 (64%) referred to CiMaS). There was widespread support for the service. Families felt supported and knowledgeable about what was happening. Care plans were almost always recorded in health records. Patients' symptoms appeared to be better recognised and managed. Staff and Facility managers felt more support than previously, with more responsive and reliable out of hours support. There were significant care improvements in patients not referred to CiMaS, suggesting a learning effect. GPs observed improvements in nursing staff confidence and support to families. Transfers to hospitals fell by two-thirds for both referred and non-referred patients compared with the year before implementation. The program was both efficient and effective. Similarly, in patients treated with adalimumab and then infliximab, immunogenicity to adalimumab was associated with subsequent immunogenicity to infliximab (OR 2.63, 95%CI 1.46-4.80, p < 0.001). For each 10-fold increase in anti-infliximab and anti-adalimumab antibody concentration, the odds of subsequently developing antibodies to adalimumab and infliximab increased by 1.73 (95% CI 1.38-2.17, p < 0.001) and 1.99 (95%CI 1.34-2.99, p < 0.001), respectively. Patients who developed immunogenicity with undetectable drug levels to infliximab were more likely to develop immunogenicity with undetectable drug levels to adalimumab (OR 2.37, 95% CI 1.39-4.19, p < 0.001). Commencing an immunomodulator at the time of switching to the second anti-TNF was associated with improved drug persistence in patients with immunogenic, but not pharmacodynamic failure., Conclusion: Irrespective of drug sequence, immunogenicity to the first anti-TNF agent was associated with immunogenicity to the second, which was mitigated by the introduction of an immunomodulator in patients with immunogenic, but not pharmacodynamic treatment failure., (© 2022 The Authors.
