14. A compatible growth and yield model for the management of mixed tropical rain forest

Abstract

The lack of appropriate analytical tools to evaluate the impact of forest management policies has hindered the sustainable use of the rain forest. Decisions about the level of forest management and financial investment require accurate predictions of future forest yields. A technique, using hierarchical clustering and canonical discriminant procedures, was developed previously to pool 112 timber species with similar growth increment characteristics into seven groups suitable for the construction of growth and yield models. Compatible growth and yield models were developed for each group by the solution of a system of differential equations expressing the rate of change of ingrowth, mortality, and survival growth components within a forest stand. The solution provides the means to project the status of the timber stand at any future time given some predefined initial stand conditions. The models are useful for inventory updating, allowable annual cut calculations, and management planning for natural or managed stands. They also provide a means to test hypotheses concerning the influence of stand characteristics on increment and to project future product assortments.

Abstract

In this thesis we study the Marine Corps Tactical Aerial Reconnaissance Vehicle routing and scheduling problem. the present method of routing and scheduling is presented, along with possible implications for routing and scheduling when future expansion of vehicle assets becomes available. A review of current literature is given and comparisons are drawn between our problem and recent work. A model for the problem, which we call the Multi-Player Orienteering Problem with Time-Windows, is developed. We present both an optimization based solution and a heuristic solution for the problem. Computational result are shown for each, along with our reasons for selecting the heuristic solution as the best of the two solutions approaches attempted.

Abstract

The report presents the concept and design of a one/two-stall repair shelter for the maintenance and repair of equipment up to Size 6 snow tractors. A canvas-covered, arch-framed structure with steel members was used for the design. The shop area was located adjacent to the repair areas for convenience and efficiency, and the entire shelter was mounted on skids for portability. The one-stall shelter and its outfitting will cost about $29,000; it will weigh about 30,500 pounds packaged for shipment. This cost is about 10 percent more and the weight is about 30 percent more than the portable maintenance shelter and its shop wanigan. The two-stall shelter and its outfitting will cost about $37,400; it will weigh about 41,400 pounds packaged for shipment. This cost is about 20 percent less and the weight is about 30 percent less than the temporary maintenance shelter. It is concluded that a prototype of the heavy-equipment field repair shelter should be evaluated at an outlying work center or construction project at an existing polar station.

48. On the Unexpected Consequences of Publication by a Novice Author.

Abstract

In the early 1960s, the author became increasingly aware of spatial disorientation as a potential cause of aircraft accidents in the USAF. Using minimal resources, he was able to document this problem and in 1969 as a first-time author published a journal article under the title "Spatial disorientation as a factor in accidents in an operational command." His work was recently used by the USAF in evaluating the need for installation in fighter aircraft of automated equipment to prevent controlled flight into terrain. He received a letter of thanks from the office of the U.S. Secretary of Defense 40 yr after his paper was published. 50. A method for classifying commercial tree species of an uneven-aged mixed species tropical forest for growth and yield model construction

Abstract

The sparse distribution of timber species in the tropical rainforesthas been a major obstacle in the construction of timber growth and yield models for forest management planning. Models for individual species usually have biased parameter estimates because of the sparse representation of' those species (Vanclay, 1991 ). We present a technique for pooling species with similar growth characteristics into groups to minimize the level of bias in the estimation of model parameters. Principal component, canonical discriminant, and approximate covariance estimation for clustering procedures (Milligan and Cooper, 1985)were used to transform and improve the sphericity and separation of multivariate diameter increment data. The k-th nearest neighbor clustering technique (Wong and Lane, 1983) was used to evaluate the most likely number of species clusters within the population covered by thedata. The average linkage, complete linkage, and Ward's minimum variance hierarchical clustering procedures (Milligan, 1981) were separately applied to the transformed data to identify the characteristics of inherent structures as the basis for classifying similar species into groups. An objective reclassification criterion was used to evaluate the performance of the three clustering methods. Optimal species groupings were attained, with 86.3% cluster recovery, by applying Ward's minimum variance method to data transformed by the canonical discriminant procedure. Consequently, six species growth classes were formed on the basis of the similarities of species growth increment patterns. This objective procedure is guaranteed to produce optimal species groups, with minimal internal variations, suitable for developing unbiased estimates of growth model parameters. The analytic procedure should be applicable to most tropical forest ecological types similarto the moist semi-deciduous forest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
