When interacting with infants, humans often alter their speech and song in ways thought to support communication. Theories of human child-rearing, informed by data on vocal signalling across species, predict that such alterations should appear globally. Here, we show acoustic differences between infant-directed and adult-directed vocalizations across cultures. We collected 1,615 recordings of infant- and adult-directed speech and song produced by 410 people in 21 urban, rural and small-scale societies. Infant-directedness was reliably classified from acoustic features only, with acoustic profiles of infant-directedness differing across language and music but in consistent fashions. We then studied listener sensitivity to these acoustic features. We played the recordings to 51,065 people from 187 countries, recruited via an English-language website, who guessed whether each vocalization was infant-directed. Their intuitions were more accurate than chance, predictable in part by common sets of acoustic features and robust to the effects of linguistic relatedness between vocalizer and listener. These findings inform hypotheses of the psychological functions and evolution of human communication.

Analysis of single cancer cells is critical to obtain accurate patient diagnosis and prognosis. In this work, we report the selective dielectrophoretic capture and electrochemical analysis of single melanoma cells at an array of interlocked spiral bipolar electrodes (iBPEs). Following dielectrophoretic capture, individual melanoma cells are hydrodynamically transferred into picoliter‐scale chambers for subsequent analysis. The interlocked spiral end of the iBPE (the sensing pole) is utilized to read out an electrochemical enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (eELISA), which quantifies the expression of a cell surface antigen, melanoma cell adhesion marker (MCAM). The opposite pole of each BPE is located in a fluidically isolated compartment containing reagents for electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL), such that luminescence reports iBPE current. In a preliminary device design, the ECL intensity was insufficient to detect MCAM expression on single cells. To achieve single‐cell analysis, we decreased the gap size between the interlocked spirals tenfold (5.0 μm to 0.5 μm), thereby creating a more sensitive biosensor by enhanced redox cycling of the product of eELISA. This work is significant because it allows for the selective isolation and sensitive analysis of individual melanoma cells in a device amenable to point‐of‐care (POC) application by combining dielectrophoresis (DEP) with interdigitated bipolar electrodes (IDBPEs). Vitamin B12 (VB12) is a flexible and sustainable catalyst both in nature and the reaction flask, facilitating varied organic transformations of high value to both enzymatic processes and synthetic chemists. Key to this value is the breadth of reactivity it possesses, capable of both ionic, 2 electron chemistry, and radical, 1 electron chemistry. In particular, the ability to generate carbon‐centered radical intermediates via photolysis of organocobalt intermediates formed from alkyl electrophiles opens the door to powerful new radical transformations challenging to achieve using classical photoredox or ligand‐to‐metal charge transfer (LMCT) catalysis. While this unique photocatalytic reactivity of VB12 has been increasingly leveraged in monocatalytic schemes, recent reports have demonstrated VB12 is able to function as the photocatalytic component in cooperative schemes, driving diverse reactivity including remote elimination of alkyl halides, regioselective epoxide arylation, and regioselective epoxide reduction. This concept briefly overviews the enabling photochemical properties of VB12 and recent applications in cooperative catalysis, providing a framework for the continued development of new cooperative catalyst systems using this powerful photoactive complex. We examined the Trail Making Test (TMT) in a sample of 767 participants with prodromal Huntington disease (prodromal HD) and 217 healthy comparisons to determine the contributions of motor, psychiatric, and cognitive changes to TMT scores. Eight traditional and derived TMT scores were also evaluated for their ability to differentiate prodromal participants closer to estimated age of diagnosis from those farther away and prodromal individuals from healthy comparisons. Results indicate that motor signs only mildly affected Part A, and psychiatric symptoms did not affect either part. Tests of perceptual processing, visual scanning, and attention were primarily associated with Part A, and executive functioning (response inhibition, set-shifting), processing speed, and working memory were associated with Part B. Additionally, TMT scores differentiated between healthy comparisons and prodromal HD individuals as far as 9-15 years before estimated diagnosis. In participants manifesting prodromal motor signs and psychiatric symptoms, the TMT primarily measures cognition and is able to discriminate between groups based on health status and estimated time to diagnosis.
