Search

Historically studied in the context of heavy-ion collisions, the extent to which free nucleon-nucleon cross sections are modified in-medium remains undetermined by these data sets. Therefore, we investigate the impact of NN in-medium modifications on neutrino-nucleus cross section predictions using the GiBUU transport model. We find that including an in-medium lowering of the NN cross section and density dependence on $\Delta$ excitation improves agreement with MicroBooNE neutrino-argon scattering data. This is observed for both proton and neutral pion spectra in charged-current muon neutrino and neutral-current single pion production datasets. The impact of collision broadening of the $\Delta$ resonance is also investigated. The absence of $\Delta$ broadening is slightly favored, but the larger uncertainties on the pion production data prevent definitive conclusions.

Inclusive differential cross sections for various $e A$ and $\nu A$ reactions are analyzed within the GiBUU theoretical framework and code. The treatment of electron-nuclus reactions has been significantly improved by implementing a parametrized description of electron-nucleon interactions for a nucleon. Using the momentum of a nucleon inside the Fermi sea the electron-nucleon cross sections are then Lorentz-boosted to obtain the electron structure functions for nuclei. The neutrino structure functions are obtained from the ones for electrons by a transformation that involves the axial formfactors and kinematical factors that account for the difference of vector and axial currents. Special emphasis is put on analyzing data from various different experiments in different neutrino energy regimes with one and the same theoretical input., Comment: Model description extended. This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. The HADES collaboration has extracted dilepton mass spectra for $\pi^-$ induced reactions on the proton from a comparison of data taken on C and CH$_2$ targets. The spectra were interpreted in terms of different versions of vector meson dominance. Here we present results obtained from the theory and generator GiBUU. We first check the subtraction procedure used and then discuss the obtained mass spectra for the proton target. We point out that any conclusions on the version of VMD requires the knowledge of the $\rho$ spectral function in the interesting mass region.

We provide an overview of the status of Monte-Carlo event generators for high-energy particle physics. Guided by the experimental needs and requirements, we highlight areas of active development, and opportunities for future improvements. Particular emphasis is given to physics models and algorithms that are employed across a variety of experiments. These common themes in event generator development lead to a more comprehensive understanding of physics at the highest energies and intensities, and allow models to be tested against a wealth of data that have been accumulated over the past decades. A cohesive approach to event generator development will allow these models to be further improved and systematic uncertainties to be reduced, directly contributing to future experimental success. Event generators are part of a much larger ecosystem of computational tools. They typically involve a number of unknown model parameters that must be tuned to experimental data, while maintaining the integrity of the underlying physics models. Making both these data, and the analyses with which they have been obtained accessible to future users is an essential aspect of open science and data preservation. The NuSTEC workshop held at the University of Pittsburgh in October 2019 brought theorists and experimentalists together to discuss the state of modeling and measurements related to pion production in neutrino-nucleus scattering in the kinematic region where pions are produced through both resonant and non-resonant mechanisms. Modeling of this region is of critical importance to the current and future accelerator- and atmospheric-based neutrino oscillation experiments. We use the microscopic GiBUU transport model to calculate dilepton ($e^+e^-$) production in heavy-ion collisions at SIS18 energies focusing on the effect of collisional broadening of the $\rho$-meson. The collisional width of the $\rho$-meson at finite temperature and baryon density in nuclear matter is calculated on the basis of the collision integral of the GiBUU model. A systematic comparison with HADES data on dilepton production in heavy-ion collisions is performed. The collisional broadening of the $\rho$ improves the agreement between theory and experiment for the dilepton invariant-mass distributions near the $\rho$ pole mass and for the excess radiation in Au+Au at $1.23 A$ GeV. We furthermore show that some remaining underprediction of the experimental dilepton spectra in C+C at $1 A$ GeV and Au+Au at $1.23 A$ GeV at intermediate invariant masses $0.2-0.4$ GeV can be accounted for by adjusting the $pn$ bremsstrahlung cross section in a way to agree with the inclusive dilepton spectrum from $dp$ collisions at $1.25 A$ GeV., Comment: Relevant result figures replaced, correcting small bug in pion propagation, Conclusions unchanged

In neutrino interactions with nucleons and nuclei, Shallow Inelastic Scattering (SIS) refers to processes, dominated by non-resonant contributions, in the kinematic region where $Q^2$ is small and the invariant mass of the hadronic system, $W$, is above the pion production threshold. The extremely rich science of this complex region, poorly understood both theoretically and experimentally, encompasses the transition from interactions described in terms of hadronic degrees of freedom to interactions with quarks and gluons described by perturbative QCD. Since a large fraction of events in NOvA and DUNE, and in atmospheric neutrino measurements such as IceCube-Upgrade, KM3NeT, Super- and Hyper-Kamiokande, are from this SIS region, there is a definite need to improve our knowledge of this physics. In \cite{Bodek:2020wbk} Bodek and Cai have tried to extract the potentials for nucleons and $\Delta$ resonances from electron-nucleus inclusive scattering data. They find that the $\Delta$ potential is considerably more attractive than that of the nucleons. This result is at variance with the results of a multitude of analyses of (e,A) and ($\gamma A$) interactions, performed about 35 years ago.

Recent JLAB measurements of inclusive (e,A) cross sections as a function of outgoing lepton momentum may provide information on the nucleon spectral function in targets that will be relevant for the planned DUNE neutrino long-baseline experiment. They also provide an important testing ground for neutrino generators. We have therefore used the transport theoretical framework and code GiBUU to calculate the cross sections for the targets C, Ar and Ti. We compare the calculations with the experimental data. The overall agreement is good. Relatively small discrepancies appear mainly on the low-electronenergy side of the QE-peak where QE and 2p2h excitation processes overlap., Comment: 2 new refs added, note added in proof, otherwise unchanged

We calculate the charged current cross sections obtained at the T2K near detector for $\nu_\mu$-induced events without pions in the final state. The method used is quantum-kinetic transport theory. Results are shown first, as a benchmark, for electron inclusive cross sections on $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O to be followed with a detailed comparison with the data measured by the T2K collaboration on C$_8$H$_8$ and H$_2$O targets. The contribution of 2p2h processes is found to be relevant mostly for backwards angles; their theoretical uncertainties are within the experimental uncertainties. Particular emphasis is then put on a discussion of events in which pions are first created, but then reabsorbed. [Background] Long-Baseline experiments such as T2K, NOvA or the planned Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) require theoretical descriptions of the complete event in a neutrino-nucleus reaction. Since nuclear targets are used this requires a good understanding of neutrino-nucleus interactions. [Purpose] One of the dominant reaction channels in neutrino-nucleus interactions is pion production. This paper aims for a coherent view on all charged current charged pion production data that are avaible from the experiments MiniBooNE, the near detector experiment at T2K and MINERvA. [Methods] Pion production is treated through excitations of nucleon resonances, including background terms, and deep inelastic scattering. The final state interactions of the produced pions are described within the Giessen-Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) implementation of quantum-kinetic transport theory. [Results] Results are given for MiniBooNE, the near detector experiment at T2K and for MINERvA. While the theoretical results for MiniBooNE differ from the data both in shape and magnitude, their agreement both with the T2K and the MINERvA data is good for all pion and lepton observables. Predictions for pion spectra are shown for MicroBooNE and NOvA. [Conclusions] Based on the GiBUU model of lepton-nucleus interactions a consistent, good theoretical description of CC charged pion production data from the T2K ND and the MINERvA experiments is possible, without any parameter tunes. The target-mass number dependence of nucleon-nucleon pairs with short-range correlations is explored in a physically transparent geometrical model within a zero-range approximation. The observed $A$ dependence of 2-nucleon ejection cross sections in $(e,e')$ reactions is found to reflect the mass dependence of nuclear density distributions. A parametrization of this $A$ dependence is given. The $A$ dependence of proton-proton vs.\ proton-neutron pairs relative to $^{12}$C is also analyzed in this model. Purpose: Develop a consistent theory and code framework for the description of lepton-nucleus interactions that can be used to describe not only inclusive cross sections, but also the complete final state of the reaction. Methods: The Giessen-Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) implementation of quantum-kinetic transport theory is used, with improvements in its treatment of the nuclear ground state and of 2p2h interactions. For the latter an empirical structure function from electron scattering data is used as a basis. Results: Results for electron-induced inclusive cross sections are given as a necessary check for the overall quality of this approach. The calculated neutrino-induced inclusive double-differential cross sections show good agreement with data from neutrino- and antineutrino reactions for different neutrino flavors at MiniBooNE and T2K. Inclusive double-differential cross sections for MicroBooNE, NOvA, MINERvA and LBNF/DUNE are given. Conclusions: Based on the GiBUU model of lepton-nucleus descriptions a good theoretical description of inclusive electron-, neutrino- and antineutrino-nucleus data over a wide range of energies, different neutrino flavors and different experiments is now possible. The $\Delta(1232) \to \gamma^\ast N$ magnetic dipole form factor ($G_M^\ast$) is described here within a new covariant model that combines the valence quark core together with the pion cloud contributions. The pion cloud term is parameterized by two terms: one connected to the pion electromagnetic form factor, the other to the photon interaction with intermediate baryon states. The model can be used in studies of pp and heavy ion collisions. In the timelike region this new model improves the results obtained with a constant form factor model fixed at its value at zero momentum transfer. At the same time, and in contrast to the Iachello model, this new model predicts a peak for the transition form factor at the expected position, i.e. at the $\rho$ mass pole. We calculate the decay of the $\Delta \to \gamma N$ transition, the Dalitz decay ($\Delta \to e^+ e^- N$), and the $\Delta$ mass distribution function. We present a coupled-channel Lagrangian approach (GiM) to describe the $\pi N \to \pi N$, $2\pi N$ scattering in the resonance energy region. The $2\pi N$ production has been significantly improved by using the isobar approximation with $\sigma N$ and $\pi \Delta(1232)$ in the intermediate state. The three-body unitarity is maintained up to interference pattern between the isobar subchannels. The scattering amplitudes are obtained as a solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation in the $K$ matrix approximation. As a first application we perform a partial wave analysis of the $\pi N \to \pi N$, $\pi^0\pi^0 N$ reactions in the Roper resonance region. We obtain $R_{\sigma N}(1440)=27^{+4}_{-9}$\,\% and $R_{\sigma N}(1440)=12^{+5}_{-3}$\,\% for the $\sigma N$ and $\pi \Delta$ decay branching ratios of $N^*(1440)$ respectively. The MINER$\nu$A experiment investigates neutrino interactions with nucleons needed for an understanding of electroweak interactions of hadrons. Since nuclear targets are being used many-body effects may affect the extracted cross sections and the energy reconstruction. The latter is essential for the extraction of neutrino oscillation properties. We investigate the influence of nuclear effects on neutrino interaction cross sections and make predictions for charged current quasielastic (QE) scattering, nucleon-knock-out and pion- and kaon-production on a CH target. The Giessen Boltzmann--Uehling--Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) model is used for the description of neutrino-nucleus reactions. Integrated and differential cross sections for inclusive neutrino scattering, QE processes and particle production for the MINER$\nu$A neutrino flux are calculated. The influence of final state interactions on the identification of these processes is discussed. In particular, energy and $Q^2$ reconstruction for the MINER$\nu$A flux are critically examined. The $Q^2$ dependence of the inclusive cross sections is found to be sensitive to the energy reconstruction. Cut-offs in flux distributions have a large effect. Final state interactions affect the pion kinetic energy spectra significantly and increase the kaon cross sections by cross feeding from other channels., Comment: Discussion of results on QE enhanced. Background: Pion production gives information on the axial form factors of nucleon resonances. It also introduces a noticeable background to quasi-elastic measurements on nuclear targets and thus has a significant impact on precision studies of neutrino oscillation parameters. Purpose: To clarify neutrino-induced pion production on nucleons and nuclei. Method: The Giessen Boltzmann--Uehling--Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) model is used for the description of neutrino-nucleus reactions. Results: Theoretical results for differential cross sections for the T2K neutrino flux at the ND280 detector and integrated cross sections as a function of neutrino energy are given. Two sets of pion production data on elementary targets are used as inputs to obtain limits for pion production in neutrino-nucleus reactions. In this talk we shortly describe the physics contents of the GiBUU transport code, used to describe lepton scattering off nuclei. Particular attention will be given to validation of the GiBUU in pion-, electron- and photon-induced reactions, which serve as a benchmark for neutrino-induced ones. We mainly concentrate on those properties of benchmark reactions, which are relevant to the region of Shallow Inelastic Scattering (SIS). Our results in this region are presented for integrated and differential cross sections. We study strangeness dynamics in reactions relevant for the formation of multi-strange hypernuclei. In particular, we discuss the in-medium effects on elementary hyperon-nucleon ($YN$) channels, which are relevant for the production of hypernuclei at PANDA. Interactions of neutrinos with nuclei in the energy ranges relevant for the MiniBooNE, T2K, NO$\nu$A, MINER$\nu$A and MINOS experiments are discussed. It is stressed that any theoretical treatment must involve all the relevant reaction mechanisms: quasielastic scattering, pion production and DIS. In addition, also many-body interactions play a role. In this talk we show how a misidentification of the reaction mechanism can affect the energy reconstruction. We also discuss how the newly measured pion production cross sections, as reported recently by the MiniBooNE collaboration, can be related to the old cross sections obtained on elementary targets. The MiniBooNE data seem to be compatible only with the old BNL data. Even then crucial features of the nucleon-pion-Delta interaction are missing in the experimental pion kinetic energy spectra. We also discuss the meson production processes at the higher energies of the NO$\nu$A, MINER$\nu$A and MINOS experiments. Here final state interactions make it impossible to gain knowledge about the elementary reaction amplitudes. Neutrino oscillation probabilities, which are being measured in long-baseline experiments, depend on neutrino energy. The energy in a neutrino beam, however, is broadly smeared so that the neutrino energy in a particular event is not directly known, but must be reconstructed from final state properties. In this paper we investigate the contributions from different reaction mechanisms on the energy-reconstruction method widely used in long-baseline neutrino experiments. Difference between the true-QE and QE-like cross sections in MiniBooNE experiment is investigated in details. It is shown, that fake QE-like events lead to significant distortions in neutrino energy reconstruction. Flux-folded and unfolded cross sections for QE-like scattering are calculated as functions of both true and reconstructed energies. Flux-folded momentum transfer distributions are calculated as functions of both true and reconstructed momentum transfer. Distributions versus reconstructed values are compared with the experimental data. Also presented are the conditional probability densities of finding a true energy for a given reconstructed energy. It is shown, how the energy reconstruction procedure influences the measurement of oscillation parameters in T2K experiment. For the reconstruction procedure based on quasielastic (QE) kinematics, all other reaction channels beside true-QE scattering show a shift of the reconstructed energy towards lower values as compared to the true energy. On average in the MiniBooNE and T2K experiments the shift is 100 - 200 MeV and depends on energy. The oscillation signals are similarly affected. We perform an updated coupled-channel analysis of eta-meson production including all recent photoproduction data on the proton. The dip observed in the differential cross sections at c.m. energies W=1.68 GeV is explained by destructive interference between the $S_{11}(1535)$ and $S_{11}(1560)$ states. The effect from $P_{11}(1710)$ is found to be small but still important to reproduce the correct shape of the differential cross section. For the $\pi^- N \to \eta N$ scattering we suggest a reaction mechanism in terms of the $S_{11}(1535)$, $S_{11}(1560)$, and $P_{11}(1710)$ states. Our conclusion on the importance of the $S_{11}(1535)$, $S_{11}(1560)$, and $P_{11}(1710)$ resonances in the eta-production reactions is in line with our previous results. No strong indication for a narrow state with a width of 15 MeV and the mass of 1680 MeV is found in the analysis. $\eta N$ scattering length is extracted and discussed., Comment: replaced with a published version, pole parameters and scattering lengths are added

Background: Nuclear effects can have a significant impact on neutrino-nucleus interactions. In particular, data from neutrino experiments with broad energy distributions require complex theoretical models that are able to take all the relevant channels into account as well as incorporate nuclear effects in both initial and final-state interactions. Purpose: We investigate neutrino and antineutrino scattering on iron and carbon in the energy range from 1 to 30 GeV, which is relevant to current and coming experiments (MINOS, NOvA, and Minerva). Method: The Giessen Boltzmann--Uehling--Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) model, which implements all reaction channels relevant for neutrino energies under consideration, is used for an investigation of neutrino-nucleus reactions. Results: Our calculations are compared with the recent NOMAD and MINOS data for the integrated inclusive cross sections. Predictions are made for the differential cross sections for semiinclusive final states (pions, kaons, and nucleons) for the MINOS and NOvA beams. Conclusions: Nuclear effects in the initial-state interactions may slightly change the inclusive nuclear cross section as compared to the free nucleon ones. Final-state interactions noticeably change the spectra of the outgoing hadrons. In the Minerva and NOvA experiments these effects should be visible in the kinetic energy distributions of the final pions, kaons, and nucleons. Background: The total inclusive cross sections obtained for quasielastic (QE) scattering in the Mini Booster Neutrino Experiment (MiniBooNE) are significantly larger than those calculated by all models based on the impulse approximation and using the world average value for the axial mass of $M_A \approx 1 \GeV$. This discrepancy has led to various, quite different explanations in terms of increased axial masses, changes in the functional form of the axial form factor, increased vector strength in nuclei, and initial two-particle interactions. This is disconcerting since the neutrino energy reconstruction depends on the reaction mechanism. Purpose: We investigate whether exclusive observables, such as nucleon knock-out, can be used to distinguish between the various proposed reaction mechanisms. We determine the influence of 2p-2h excitations on the energy reconstruction. Method: We use the Giessen Boltzmann--Uehling--Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) model to predict numbers and spectra of knock-out nucleons. The model is extended by incorporating a simple, but realistic treatment of initial 2p-2h excitations. Results: We show numbers and spectra of knock-out nucleons and show their sensitivity to the presence of 2p-2h initial excitations. We also discuss the influence of 2p-2h excitations on the neutrino energy reconstruction. Conclusions: 2p-2h excitations do lead to an increase in the number $n$ of knock-out nucleons for $n \ge 2$ while only the $n=1$ knock-out remains a clean signal of true QE scattering. The spectra of knock-out nucleons do also change, but their qualitative shape remains as before. In the energy reconstruction 2p-2h interactions lead to a downward shift of the reconstructed energy; this effect of 2p-2h excitations disappears at higher energies because the 2p-2h influence is spread out over a wider energy range., Comment: 24 pages, 13 figures; v3: published erratum merged into text around eqs. Antiproton annihilations on nuclei provide a very interesting way to study the behaviour of strange particles in the nuclear medium. In low energy $\bar p$ annihilations, the hyperons are produced mostly by strangeness exchange mechanisms. Thus, hyperon production in $\bar p A$ interactions is very sensitive to the properties of the antikaon-nucleon interaction in nuclear medium. Within the Giessen Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport model (GiBUU), we analyse the experimental data on $\Lambda$ and $K^0_S$ production in $\bar p A$ collisions at $p_{\rm lab}=0.2-4$ GeV/c. A satisfactory overall agreement is reached, except for the $K^0_S$ production in $\bar p+^{20}$Ne collisions at $p_{\rm lab}=608$ MeV/c, where we obtain substantially larger $K^0_S$ production rate. We study the formation of single- and double-$\Lambda$ hypernuclei in antiproton-induced reactions relevant for the forthcoming PANDA experiment at FAIR. We use the Giessen Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) transport model with relativistic mean-fields for the description of non-equilibrium dynamics and the statistical multifragmentation model (SMM) for fragment formation. This combined approach describes the dynamical properties of strangeness and fragments in low energy $\bar{p}$-induced reactions fairly well. We then focus on the formation of double-$\Lambda$ hypernuclei in high energy $\bar{p}$-nucleus collisions on a primary target including the complementary $\Xi$-induced reactions to a secondary one, as proposed by the PANDA collaboration. Our results show that a copious production of double-$\Lambda$ hyperfragments is possible at PANDA. In particular, we provide first theoretical estimations on the double-$\Lambda$ production cross section, which strongly rises with decreasing energy of the secondary $\Xi$-beam., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures, Nuclear Physics A, in press

This report is based on a ten-week program on "Gluons and the quark sea at high-energies", which took place at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Seattle in Fall 2010. The principal aim of the program was to develop and sharpen the science case for an Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a facility that will be able to collide electrons and positrons with polarized protons and with light to heavy nuclei at high energies, offering unprecedented possibilities for in-depth studies of quantum chromodynamics. We investigate one pion production processes within the Giessen Boltzmann--Uehling--Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) coupled channel transport model. We study the strangeness production in antiproton-nucleus collisions at the beam momenta from 200 MeV/c to 15 GeV/c within the Giessen Botzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) transport model. The GiBUU model contains a very detailed description of the underlying antinucleon-nucleon cross sections, in-particular, of the strangeness production channels. We compare our calculations with the bubble chamber data on \Lambda- and K^0_S-production in antiproton-nucleus collisions and with the earlier intranuclear cascade calculations. The contributions of the various partial channels to the hyperon production are reported and systematic differences with experiment are discussed. The possible formation of the bound \Lambda- and \Lambda\Lambda-nucleus systems is also considered. In this review we first outline the basics of transport theory and its recent generalization to off-shell transport. We then present in some detail the main ingredients of any transport method using in particular the Giessen Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) implementation of this theory as an example. We discuss the potentials used, the ground state initialization and the collision term, including the in-medium modifications of the latter. The central part of this review covers applications of GiBUU to a wide class of reactions, starting from pion-induced reactions over proton and antiproton reactions on nuclei to heavy-ion collisions (up to about 30 AGeV). A major part concerns also the description of photon-, electron- and neutrino-induced reactions (in the energy range from a few 100 MeV to a few 100 GeV). For this wide class of reactions GiBUU gives an excellent description with the same physics input and the same code being used. We argue that GiBUU is an indispensable tool for any investigation of nuclear reactions in which final-state interactions play a role. Studies of pion-nucleus interactions, nuclear fragmentation, heavy ion reactions, hyper nucleus formation, hadronization, color transparency, electron-nucleus collisions and neutrino-nucleus interactions are all possible applications of GiBUU and are discussed in this article., Comment: 173 pages, review article. v2: Text-rearrangements in sects. 2 and 3 (as accepted for publication in Physics Reports)

The photoproduction of $\omega$ mesons on LH_2, C and Nb has been studied for incident photon energies from 900 to 1300 MeV using the CB/TAPS detector at ELSA. The $\omega$ line shape does not show any significant difference between the LH_2 and the Nb targets. The data are compared with results of transport calculations that predict a sensitivity of the $\omega$ line shape to in-medium modifications near the production threshold on a free nucleon of $E_{\gamma}^{lab}$ = 1109 MeV.}, Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Ongoing experiments at JLAB investigate the nuclear transparency in exclusive rho0(770) electroproduction off nuclei. In this work we present transport model predictions for the attenuation of rho0s in nuclei and for color transparency (CT) effects as observable at CLAS with a 5 GeV electron beam energy. A full event simulation presented here permits to study the impact of actual experimental acceptance conditions and kinematical cuts. The exclusive (e,e'rho0) cross section off nucleons is described by diffractive and color string breaking mechanisms extended toward the onset of the deep inelastic regime. Different hadronization and CT scenarios are compared. We show that a detailed analysis of elementary cross section, nuclear effects and experimental cuts is needed to reveal the early onset of rho0-CT at present JLAB energies., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

We investigate the pp --> pp e+e- and quasifree pn --> pn e+e- reactions within an effective Lagrangian model at the laboratory kinetic energy of 1.25 GeV for which experimental data have recently been reported by the HADES Collaboration. The model uses a meson-exchange approximation to describe the initial nucleon-nucleon (NN) scattering. Contributions to the reaction amplitudes are included from the NN bremsstrahlung as well as from the excitation, propagation and radiative decay of the Delta(1230) isobar state. It is found that the HADES data on the e+e- invariant mass distribution in the pp --> pp e+e- reaction are reproduced excellently by our model where the Delta isobar term dominates the spectrum. However, the quasifree pn --> pn e+e- cross sections are underpredicted in the invariant mass region of 0.40 - 0.55 GeV/c^2 even after including contributions of the eta Dalitz decay and the subthreshold production and decay of the rho^0 meson via the baryonic resonance N*(1520). In the case of the quasifree pn --> pn e+e- reaction, a strong sensitivity to the pion electromagnetic form factor is observed which helps to bring the calculated cross sections closer to the data in the higher dilepton mass region., Comment: 12 pages 3, figures, version to appear in Phys. We present a study of neutrino-nucleus interactions at the T2K experiment based on the GiBUU transport model. The aim of T2K is to measure $\nu_e$ appearance and $\theta_{13}$, but it will also be able to do a precise measurement of $\nu_\mu$ disappearance. The former requires a good understanding of $\pi^0$ production while the latter is closely connected with a good understanding of quasielastic scattering. For both processes we investigate the influence of nuclear effects and particular final-state interactions on the expected event rates taking into account the T2K detector setup., Comment: v3: matches version to be published in Phys. We apply the GiBUU model to questions relevant for current and future neutrino long-baseline experiments, we address in particular the relevance of charged-current reactions for neutrino disappearance experiments. A correct identification of charged-current quasielastic (CCQE) events - which is the signal channel in oscillation experiments - is relevant for the neutrino energy reconstruction and thus for the oscillation result. We show that about 20% of the quasielastic cross section is misidentified in present-day experiments and has to be corrected for by means of event generators. Furthermore, we show that also a significant part of 1pi+ (> 40%) events is misidentified as CCQE mainly caused by the pion absorption in the nucleus. We also discuss the dependence of both of these numbers on experimental detection thresholds. The nuclear breathing-mode giant monopole resonance is studied within an improved relativistic Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) transport approach. As a new feature, the numerical treatment of ground state nuclei and their phase-space evolution is realized with the same semiclassical energy density functional. With this new method a very good stability of ground state nuclei in BUU simulations is achieved. This is important in extracting clear breathing-mode signals for the excitation energy and, in particular, for the lifetime from transport theoretical studies including mean-field and collisional effects., Comment: 33 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. We present a fully relativistic and gauge invariant framework for calculating the cross sections of dilepton production in nucleon-nucleon (NN) collisions which is based on the meson-exchange approximation for the NN scattering amplitudes. Predictions of our model are compared with those of other covariant models that have been used to describe this reaction. We show that the Lagrangian of the free spin-5/2 field in the spinor-tensor representation with the auxiliary spinor field depends on the three arbitrary parameters. The first two parameters are associated with the spin-3/2 and -1/2 sector of the theory while the latter one is related to the auxiliary degrees of freedom. We derive a corresponding propagator of the system which represents (2 x 2) matrix in the $(\psi_{\mu\nu},\xi)$ space. The diagonal terms stand for the propagation of the spin-5/2 and auxiliary fields whereas the non-diagonal ones correspond to the $\psi_{\mu\nu}-\xi$ mixing. The resulting spin-5/2 propagator contains non-pole contributions coming from the spin-3/2 and -1/2 sector of the spinor-tensor representation. A general form of the interaction vertex involving spin-5/2 field is discussed on the example of the $\pi N N^*_{5/2}$ coupling. It is demonstrated that lower spin degrees of freedom can be removed from the theory by using higher order derivative coupling.

Neutrino-induced pion production on nuclear targets is the major inelastic channel in all present-day neutrino-oscillation experiments. It has to be understood quantitatively in order to be able to reconstruct the neutrino-energy at experiments such as MiniBooNE or K2K and T2K. We report here results of cross section calculations for both this channel and for quasielastic scattering within the semiclassical GiBUU method. This methods contains scattering, both elastic and inelastic, absorption and side-feeding of channels all in a unitary, common theoretical framework and code. We find that charged current quasielastic scattering (CCQE) and $1 \pi$ production are closely entangled in actual experiments, due to final state interactions of the scattered nucleons on one hand and of the $\Delta$ resonances and pions, on the other hand. We discuss the uncertainties in the elementary pion production cross sections from ANL and BNL. We find the surprising result that the recent $1 \pi$ production cross section data from MiniBooNE are well described by calculations without any FSI. For higher energies we study the validity of the Bloom-Gilman quark-hadron duality for both electron- and neutrino-induced reactions. While this duality holds quite well for nucleon targets, for nuclear targets the average resonance contributions to the structure function $F_2$ are always lower than the DIS values. This result indicates a significant impact of nuclear effects on observables, reducing the cross section and structure functions by at least 30-40% and changing the form of various distributions., Comment: invited talk, given by U. We present our description of neutrino induced charged current quasielastic scattering (CCQE) in nuclei at energies relevant for the MiniBooNE experiment. In our framework, the nucleons, with initial momentum distributions according to the Local Fermi Gas model, move in a density- and momentum-dependent mean field potential. The broadening of the outgoing nucleons due to nucleon-nucleon interactions is taken into account by spectral functions. Long range (RPA) correlations renormalizing the electroweak strength in the medium are also incorporated. The background from resonance excitation events that do not lead to pions in the final state is also predicted by propagating the outgoing hadrons with the Giessen semiclassical BUU model in coupled channels (GiBUU). We achieve a good description of the shape of the CCQE Q2 distribution extracted from data by MiniBooNE, thanks to the inclusion of RPA correlations, but underestimate the integrated cross section when the standard value of MA = 1 GeV is used.
